Such a beautifully made movie. If only films like this could be produced today. But as the film states at the beginning "For those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not believe in God, no explanation is possible."

I recall getting up in the middle of the night in the '70's to watch this movie when I was young. I chose St Bernadette as my confirmation saint because of this movie.
This motion picture has moved my heart and soul. I am very grateful to those who made this picture, and for the Lady of Lourdes as well as St. Bernadette to show us that miracles are possible.
From "Load well your guns, gentlemen, for the path to this little girl lies over my dead body" to "You are the rarest of human beings, little Soubirous" -- superb words were never uttered by a man or a priest!
I was 9yrs old when this movie first came out I remember how hard it made me cry. I still cry when I watch it. Movies of this caliber are so rare .Hollywood has gone to the pits.
That means you were born in 34! Are you still with us? I'll be 86 on August 14. Never heard of this before. I guess I was too busy most of the time to go to the movies. My father could barely put food on the table let alone give us money to go to the movie. And then I became a father and worked a lot So I didn't actually see any of these old ones till I got the internet just three years ago. If I were young again I would make an old time art deco movie theater and show all these old movies. A coca cola for five cents and pop corn for ten. Or was it the other way around?
@@vincentconti3633 Hello! I was born in 1950, so I join with you & J Delaney here. This is one of my all-time favorite movies too! I have it on DVD, but if I knew of your theatre I would be first in line!! :) God bless....J.
Oh my gosh.. she knew what she saw. I am not Catholic I am Protestant. But this movie gave me so much faith as a little girl and Charlton Heston too in the 10 Commandments. I am now 66 yr old woman . I am very spiritual. But these movies as a young child set my soul right. Raised in the church.
Oh how I love this story and my book of Bernadette. I was first introduced to her through the church store. I was consumed with wanting to be good and be a nun and I prayed everyday, all the time. My parents worried. In the store of the catholic church there was a small paperback book on Bernadette Soubirous. I thought it was only me who thought, "there is nothing good for me in this world..it is evil...this world is not for me...take me to heaven Lord...I want to be with you." I had just left Saint Mary's church and walked under a bridge to my cousins house for a visit. Upon leaving her home and just before stepping out of the elevator there on the floor in front of me appeared a beautiful crucifix with red garnet for the beads. I placed them around my head and started learning how to say the Hail Mary full of grace. I later lost the beads and felt so bad and asked Mary for forgiveness and God for being so careless. I asked please may I have another rosary..Lo and behold on the floor of another street appeared a crystal gemmed rosary. Once again i wore them and said the Hail Marys. I guess the Lord knew I was going to lose the beads again. Once again I cried with deep sadness and asked for another set. This time the Lord made me wait. Upon moving to Virginia a very small old lady was happy because I was wearing the rosary. It was a small plastic one I wore as I did my job as a cashier and she was sooo very happy to see me wearing one that she gave me her authentic solid wood rosary from Medjugorje. She said, "this crucifix is an original from Medjugorje." She later gave me another one of hers. I just recently took those off because I was conflicted, but I did wear them every single day and walked the streets saying the rosary. So now I have to go and find them again. This time I know they are in my house. God Bless everyone.
What a marvellous movie. I must confess I haven't the strong faith that I would like to have, I'm one of the sitting on the fence types. My feeling is that there has to be a divine creator but what form he takes and how we can relate to him is a mystery. I do try to lead an honest and helpful life but frequently let myself down and then i am ashamed of myself.

This is a great movie even if you are not a Catholic. It is not entirely historically accurate but overall it presents the events of the time very well. It has many wonderful performances from the supporting cast, especially Gladys Cooper as Sr. Vauzou, Lee J. Cobb as Dr. Douzous, Charles Bickford as Father Peyramale, and of course Vincent Price as the Imperial Prosecutor. Jennifer Jones won an Oscar for her performance, which is breathtaking and very moving. This is a fantastically clean and beautiful print and the sound is great. Thanks so very much for uploading it!
I have watched this movie several times and it always makes me happy even if I have had a crappy day. The girl that portrays Bernadette did a wonderful job.
My VCR broke and I haven't been able to watch my copy of it. So many here on you tube had such horrible copies of it. This one is perfect and I put it on my playlist. Now I can watch it anytime I want. The miracle of the Spring sends chills down my spine. When that baby bolted out with that scream, I caught silent tears running down my cheeks. It would have been miraculous to see in person. Faith is a miracle that we all possess. In these terrible times, Father help the peoples faith be strong.
I love this movie and watched it several times. It was an honor given an opportunity to travel and visit Lourdes three times and relived the steps that St. Bernadette and how she received the message from the Virgin Mary in the grotto of Massabielle.

Thank you Mr. Curran for posting this movie. I saw it on TCM and had to see it again. I have been watching it over and over. Every time I see it, I see a new message. This is the most powerful movie ever made. I feel truly grateful and blessed each time I see it. This movie has changed the trajectory of how I live my life now. I seek no pleasure of worldly satisfaction, I even welcome suffering. My life now is to be righteous and to have eternal life.
I saw this movie when I was 19/20 years old. It was running late at night on whoever’s tv when I was partying there. Yes, I have a past, we all do. She was my first introduction to saints. 40 some years later, now aches and pains are creeping into my life, she is just a prayer away. I’m not a Catholic, but, I do say the Rosary and a prayer to Saint Bernadette just about every day. My rosary comes from Lourdes with water from the spring and has been blessed by the Pope. I may not ever be cured, but it is comforting to know she is there, listening.
Hello, Mr. Curran: Thank you so much for sharing St. Bernadette's life story. She taught us to be humble, taught us obedience, to sacrifice, to show kindness, forgiveness and love to those with hatred in their hearts and to firmly believe in prayers. She came from a very poor family but never complained about being poor and never complained of her illness. She just accepted everything with her whole heart.
Dina, you mean well but please stop using the word 'OBEDIENCE'...we are not plebs or servants...and neither does the almighty expect us to crawl on our knees to the alter of the most high...god expects us to use common sense...and also remember the story of the woman who rescued the snake....caveat emptor!

In the early 1990's, I saw this b/w as a silent movie ( I think). That is irrelevant considering the impact it had on my life. It reached deep into my heart. Never forgot it. Then as it so happened this movie recently popped up on the screen. It never occurred to me that it would be available on youTube or any other easily accessible avenue. This 1943 version was even better than what I remembered of the older one. It mesmerizes and touches one's heart's desire to know God, HIS holiness, goodness, and love. It asks me to consider my soul and its salvation. Thank you very much, Darren Curran, for this gift.
It is also one of my favorites as well. I was just thinking about it and here it is so I am watching it at work. Where we all need prayer. I work at a school much prayer is needed. I thank you very much for sharing.

The first time I saw this "picture" was with my Grandmother on the Late Late Show on TV over 55 yrs ago. I have since seen it countless times & never once do I not remember the first view. Best picture ever. Impossible not to feel a sense of awe & gratitude each & every time. Thanks for this post!
I don't know how many times I've gone back to this film. Religious films have a tendency of manipulation over audiences. Choral background, especially, twists a lot of minds. But the sincerity of this story is phenominal. There are other things at work here which made this film an artistic masterpiece. The lighting and the closeup of Anne Revere as she calls Bernadette to sit by the fire with her. When Revere talks of how the years pass, you can see the lines on her face and how tired she is. Revere's performance is a revelation, indeed , it was nominated for an Academy Award. Other great performances include Lee J. Cobb, Roman Bohnen, Vincent Price, Charles Bickford and Blanche Yurka. It is a marvelous film.
William Snyder It may be a religious film, but it is based on a true story. There have been 67 recorded miracles at the grotto and no doctor or scientist has ever be able to disprove it.
She was made to tell her story 60 thousand times she never wavered from the first telling of it . When you lie your story starts to change & hers never did . Pray for us Saint Bernadette & the Blessed Mother . We so need it !!! God bless you all who believe & God bless you all who don't . We will pray for you . AMEN ...

I pray the rosary every day. St. Bernadette is one of my favourite saints. I watched this film today as I do often, with a box of tissues! It was a great film and Jennifer Jones played the part so well,it looked like she really did see Our Lady, her acting was so good.
Indeed!May she remember us in prayers.
Such a beautifully made movie. If only films like this could be produced today. But as the film states at the beginning "For those who believe in God, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not believe in God, no explanation is possible."

Explain. 1 To make plain, manifest, or intelligible; to clear of obscurity; to illustrate the meaning of. What sorts of things are hidden behind something which can't be made plain, manifest, or intelligible, or cleared of obscurity, or have its meaning illustrated? Such a thing can't be connected to reality, it appears, or can't afford to have its actual explanation known. That category is inhabited by swindles, frauds, and schemes. The pattern is: with one hand, offer the solution to a problem, offer to make things right, and with the other...

St Bernadette was my patron Saint when I was confirmed.
As with all poetry, what you say is nicely put but ultimately meaningless
I recall getting up in the middle of the night in the '70's to watch this movie when I was young. I chose St Bernadette as my confirmation saint because of this movie.
My confirmation name is Bernadette too! She was always my favorite saint to learn about and my Grandma and I always watched this movie
Theresa I did too
Oh my! I did the same thing!
My confirmation name was also Bernadette
Me too
I love this movie and I can watch it over and over again. she was truly blessed
I too watch it over and over again. My dear sister was just like her. She took Bernadette her confirmation name at age 11.

I love them too! so magical and brave against injustice!!!

I was 9yrs old when this movie first came out I remember how hard it made me cry. I still cry when I watch it. Movies of this caliber are so rare .Hollywood has gone to the pits.
Hollywood was honoring the production code until 1964
That means you were born in 34! Are you still with us? I'll be 86 on August 14. Never heard of this before. I guess I was too busy most of the time to go to the movies. My father could barely put food on the table let alone give us money to go to the movie. And then I became a father and worked a lot So I didn't actually see any of these old ones till I got the internet just three years ago. If I were young again I would make an old time art deco movie theater and show all these old movies. A coca cola for five cents and pop corn for ten. Or was it the other way around?

When the nun finds out about Bernadettes illness makes me cry 😢
@@Suzyfromtheblock that was a good scene. Btw please check out vaticancatholic.com for important info on the Catholic faith.
I love to watch this over and over and over and over and over..... again.. wonderful movie..
Amen

What a marvellous movie. I must confess I haven't the strong faith that I would like to have, I'm one of the sitting on the fence types.
Dina, you mean well but please stop using the word 'OBEDIENCE'...we are not plebs or servants...and neither does the almighty expect us to crawl on our knees to the alter of the most high...god expects us to use common sense...and also remember the story of the

I first saw this film age 7 on a small flickering black and white TV. Without having the slightest idea why, I was blown away by it🕊
In the early 1990's, I saw this b/w as a silent movie ( I think).

Plus it’s a true story
Anne Revere was a phenomenal and under-rated actress. Her portrayal of Louise was perfect.
