Yes, I agree!! Very powerful and emotional! Even though I have seen this movie many many times I get very emotional! It is the best movie I have ever seen in my life! I even have a statue of the Blessed mother and a kneeling statue of Saint Bernadette as a shrine in my house!
That is the great English stage actress Gladys Cooper, a legendary beauty in her youth who joyfully plunged into great and powerful mature roles in later life.

Explain. 1 To make plain, manifest, or intelligible; to clear of obscurity; to illustrate the meaning of. What sorts of things are hidden behind something which can't be made plain, manifest, or intelligible, or cleared of obscurity, or have its meaning illustrated? Such a thing can't be connected to reality, it appears, or can't afford to have its actual explanation known. That category is inhabited by swindles, frauds, and schemes. The pattern is: with one hand, offer the solution to a problem, offer to make things right, and with the other...
I have watched this since I was a boy, my mother loved this movie & I can truly say not once have I not been able to control my tears when she says I AM THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION THE MOST SINGLE PRIVILEGE OF GRACE . Please pray for us saint Bernadette...
Of all the beautiful scenes, the goodbyes to her parents really got me. Since losing both, that was a gift. I love this movie more than any I’ve ever watched in my lifetime. ❤️
From "Load well your guns, gentlemen, for the path to this little girl lies over my dead body" to "You are the rarest of human beings, little Soubirous" -- superb words were never uttered by a man or a priest!
I recall getting up in the middle of the night in the '70's to watch this movie when I was young. I chose St Bernadette as my confirmation saint because of this movie.
I pray the rosary every day. St. Bernadette is one of my favourite saints. I watched this film today as I do often, with a box of tissues! It was a great film and Jennifer Jones played the part so well,it looked like she really did see Our Lady, her acting was so good.
Oh how I love this story and my book of Bernadette. I was first introduced to her through the church store. I was consumed with wanting to be good and be a nun and I prayed everyday, all the time. My parents worried. In the store of the catholic church there was a small paperback book on Bernadette Soubirous. I thought it was only me who thought, "there is nothing good for me in this world..it is evil...this world is not for me...take me to heaven Lord...I want to be with you." I had just left Saint Mary's church and walked under a bridge to my cousins house for a visit. Upon leaving her home and just before stepping out of the elevator there on the floor in front of me appeared a beautiful crucifix with red garnet for the beads. I placed them around my head and started learning how to say the Hail Mary full of grace. I later lost the beads and felt so bad and asked Mary for forgiveness and God for being so careless. I asked please may I have another rosary..Lo and behold on the floor of another street appeared a crystal gemmed rosary. Once again i wore them and said the Hail Marys. I guess the Lord knew I was going to lose the beads again. Once again I cried with deep sadness and asked for another set. This time the Lord made me wait. Upon moving to Virginia a very small old lady was happy because I was wearing the rosary. It was a small plastic one I wore as I did my job as a cashier and she was sooo very happy to see me wearing one that she gave me her authentic solid wood rosary from Medjugorje. She said, "this crucifix is an original from Medjugorje." She later gave me another one of hers. I just recently took those off because I was conflicted, but I did wear them every single day and walked the streets saying the rosary. So now I have to go and find them again. This time I know they are in my house. God Bless everyone.

That means you were born in 34! Are you still with us? I'll be 86 on August 14. Never heard of this before. I guess I was too busy most of the time to go to the movies. My father could barely put food on the table let alone give us money to go to the movie. And then I became a father and worked a lot So I didn't actually see any of these old ones till I got the internet just three years ago. What a splendid a movie ... Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Watch this movie with a heart of a child, and not with the arrogance and mind of the " know it all ".
Suffer the Little Children is what he said, and Suffer is what he meant, and the Roman Catholic Church has been living up to this belief since day One.

I don't know how many times I've gone back to this film. Religious films have a tendency of manipulation over audiences. Choral background, especially, twists a lot of minds. But the sincerity of this story is phenominal. There are other things at work here which made this film an artistic masterpiece. The lighting and the closeup of Anne Revere as she calls Bernadette to sit by the fire with her. When Revere talks of how the years pass, you can see the lines on her face and how tired she is. Revere's performance is a revelation, indeed , it was nominated for an Academy Award. Other great performances include Lee J. Cobb, Roman Bohnen, Vincent Price, Charles Bickford and Blanche Yurka. It is a marvelous film.
William Snyder It may be a religious film, but it is based on a true story. There have been 67 recorded miracles at the grotto and no doctor or scientist has ever be able to disprove it.
Jennifer Jones was absolutely radiant ! ! wow , Gladys Cooper really threw in the kitchen sink ! they all did ! GREAT MOVIE ! and it's unedited , all the parts seem to be here !

When I was either 7 or 8 years old I came in from playing outside and my mother was watching this movie on tv. It was at the part where St. Bernadette was scrubbing the floors in the convent. I stood in the living room and wanted to watch it but my mother said that I was too young to watch it. I never figured out why she felt that way. Now that I’m grown up I’ve watched it many times....and love it!

I saw this movie when I was 19/20 years old. It was running late at night on whoever’s tv when I was partying there. Yes, I have a past, we all do. She was my first introduction to saints. 40 some years later, now aches and pains are creeping into my life, she is just a prayer away. I’m not a Catholic, but, I do say the Rosary and a prayer to Saint Bernadette just about every day. My rosary comes from Lourdes with water from the spring and has been blessed by the Pope. I may not ever be cured, but it is comforting to know she is there, listening.
2:14:43 is when she realized that what the Blessed Mother said to her has come to pass. "I cannot promise that you will be happy in this world, but you will be in the next."

I've studied the life of Bernadette Soubirous and the movie got much of it accurate, especially with her parents, how she saw the vision and so forth. Of course there was dramatic license and the original book by Franz Werfel took further dramatic license. But all in all they stuck pretty much to the events that took place. The life of the actress Jennifer Jones is a sad one as she had great loss (loosing one child to suicide) and many other difficulties in life. When actor Charles Bickford who played Father Dominique Peryramale (An actual person) died in 1967 Jennifer Jones attempted suicide, as they were close friends. A beautiful story about a beautiful person, played by a beautiful actress. Jennifer left us December 17th 2009.
I saw this movie as a young girl and it had a profound effect on me in terms of the existence of a higher being. When you see movies like this, you always wonder how much of it is true, and this was so well done, I never questioned its validity. This movie has always been on my "faves" list. Thanks for enlightening us and corroborating the events DonD.
Vincent Price once said the his favorite character he ever portrayed was that Vital Dutour because it had that greatest amount of change from the beginning until the end. Pray for me Bernadette.

As I sit here and ponder this film, I’ve seen many times since my childhood, now in my early sixties suffering from late stage cancer, I think now to just five weeks ago when I pleaded in prayer for the intersession of our holy Virgin Mary to allow my life to end peacefully. Yet, here I am again, free from pain and looking forward again. God’s peace to all who find themselves here today.
Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with you. Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God pray for us sinners now and tilll the hour of death. Amen
Frank, Trust in God and His mother Mary who was his earthly vessel for the incarnation. I pray that you are pain free and in peace. Cancer has a way of making us face reality and come face to face with our mortality. As I heard just the other evening in a talk on Advent, death is but a door, a door that leads from this life to eternal life. It is our choice if that life will be with God in heaven. A choice we can make here on earth as we accept Jesus Christ as our savior and truly repent of our sins. If you are Catholic you know what is required to be in a state of sanctifying grace and to avail yourself of the sacrament of penance and the anointing of the sick to prepare for the transition. May God bless you and grant you peace.
My parents named me for her, and when i was old enough my mother had me watch this movie after reading her biograghy. I never felt so inspired by someones grace or so unworthy. I am no longer Catholic, but she is still my favorite.

I've watched this movie several times on UA-cam and I even have it on DVD. It's such an excellent movie about a wonderful saint. I don't think St. Bernadette was stupid at all, as people treated her. I find a lot of the things she said and did to be far from stupid....and perhaps quite brilliant and wise. I learned something this time while watching it.....she never complained about the severe pain she was in. I find a lot of saints never complained about their pains. I wish I could be as strong, and I'm trying to accept the pain I have and handled it without complaining, and in doing so I find I pray more but somehow I complain...but I do it less. I love these old movies on the saints, and I love St. Bernadette and this movie and this is one of my favorite all time movies!
@Ed Pooler Who do you think gave you the New Testament? The Catholic Church did. The Church does not teach against the New Testament because members of the Church wrote it and the Church compiled it. There is one mediator, Christ. The saints make INTERCESSION and the New Testament tells us all to make intercession. They do what the bible tells us to do. Intercession and mediation are not the same thing. If you're going to be anti-Catholic, at least come up with some new strawmen because the standard ones are very tiresome. Also, could you people please have some consideration and stop putting your anti-Catholic comments all over absolutely everything. Start your own church (you can be the 40,001 protestant sect). Or make your own anti-Catholic channel, thanks. Jesus established the Catholic Church as the teaching authority (before the New Testament). And no, they do not contradict each other.

@@colinmccarthy7921 We all suffer. It is part of the human condition. But suffering is not a requirement for a relationship with your god. I consider myself a spiritual person, not religious. I have real problems with Organized Religion. However, I love this film for what I feel is it's sincerity. Certainly, when 20th Century-Fox released it as it's big Christmas release, it was considering the "sincerity" of a big box office. However, it is a beautifully done film with reverence for St. Bernadette and the whole phenomenon of Lourdes. And, it is technical cinematic marvel. It is beautifully acted with some of the best black and white cinematography one has ever seen. It is also interesting to note that the film's producer (William Perlberg) and composer (Alfred Newman) were not Catholic, but Jewish. Their contributions to this wonderful film speak to the wonderful professionalism of the Hollywood of old.
I agree about being a cinematic masterpiece! That one scene when St. Bernadette surveys her room in the convent, her eyes move from left to right, welled up with tears, is when I sob uncontrollably. I agree pikenova48. They don't make movies like this anymore! What a shame.--- Giving faith to people is a gift. This movie was a beautiful gift for me.
In the early 1990's, I saw this b/w as a silent movie ( I think). That is irrelevant considering the impact it had on my life. It reached deep into my heart. Never forgot it. Then as it so happened this movie recently popped up on the screen. It never occurred to me that it would be available on youTube or any other easily accessible avenue. This 1943 version was even better than what I remembered of the older one. It mesmerizes and touches one's heart's desire to know God, HIS holiness, goodness, and love. It asks me to consider my soul and its salvation. Thank you very much, Darren Curran, for this gift.
This film won 4 Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role - Jennifer Jones for playing Bernadette Soubirous, Best Art Direction - Black-and-White, Best Cinematography - Black-and-White and Best Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture.

I pray the rosary every day. St. Bernadette is one of my favourite saints. I watched this film today as I do often, with a box of tissues! It was a great film and Jennifer Jones played the part so well,it looked like she really did see Our Lady, her acting was so good.
Indeed!May she remember us in prayers.
Amen

Plus it’s a true story
Anne Revere was a phenomenal and under-rated actress. Her portrayal of Louise was perfect.
Jennifer Jones was absolutely radiant ! ! wow , Gladys Cooper really threw in the kitchen sink ! they all did ! GREAT MOVIE ! and it's unedited , all the parts seem to be here !

What a marvellous movie. I must confess I haven't the strong faith that I would like to have, I'm one of the sitting on the fence types. I do try to lead an honest and helpful life but frequently let myself down and then i am ashamed of myself.

Thanks for that insight.. maybe Mary was right about happiness in this world...

May Our Lord Bless you with faith and all blessings and grace to see Him in your life and grant to you strength of carrying of your cross☦️❤️
U are always a Catholic, can't change tat ,once baptised unto the Catholic Church, ur a child of heaven, now u have a choice, free will, but be careful ,tat u know u have left the truth and will have to make account of tat,u buried ur talents the the good lord gave u,

Bernadette and this movie and this is one of my favorite all time movies!
annamal pete thank you! I’ll look into the book of modern saints. God bless you too!
Saint Berndette pray for us, Saint Michael pray for us, Saint Jude pray for us. I love this flim Jennifer Jones won an oscar for this role.
Who would thumb down this classic?

Out of every movie that I ever watched in my lifetime, I can honestly say that, "The Song of Bernadette, is and always will be the most held high and very dear to my heart felt movies of all eternity." Never has such a movie impacted me in the way that this sweet jem has, except for the mentioned motion picture, "The Passion," by "Mel Brooks." I really doubt that anyone could remake such a beautiful movie in color or just maybe one could with just the right elements and God's sweet blessing.
With love and my very best concerns to Bernadette and sweet Jesus.
Sincerely,
Jonny
John Eckman IV Mel Brooks ? I think you mean Mel Gibson ...but yes , I agree ....amazing movie - nothing today could match it :)
Beautiful film. Thank you. Saint Bernadette, pray for us. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. Amen.
who from this film is still alive?
I believe Bernadette's true story. I have witnessed something that happened to me when I was five years of age on the Island of Guam as I knelt down and closed my eyes and prayed Ten Hail Mary's and Ten Our Father Prayer I asked Jesus to appear to me and when I opened my eyes I saw Jesus smiling at me for fifteen minutes. My sister cried when I told her I can see Jesus smiling at me and after that night I truly believed in Jesus Christ til this day God has always been in my heart and soul Oh Holy Mary Mother of God thank you. Love your Daughter Bernadita Wusstig Born on the Island of Guam to Mr and Mrs Felix Camacho Wusstig at Guam Memorial Hospital. Si Zuuse MAASI BLESS YOU GOD
Today is March 25,2018. On this date in history ,when Bernadette asked the Lady who she was..TheLady responded "I Am The Immaculate Conception".160 years ago today!!!!
One of my most favorite movies. I’ve watched it now three times in recent weeks 💙💙💙.
I am praying for the gift of healing and faith for NDH. St. Bernadette, pray for us! 🙏🙏🙏
Great Film - I've Been Watching This For Decades And It Speaks Volumes And Will Continue To Do So For Generations To Come.
This is a great movie even if you are not a Catholic. It is not entirely historically accurate but overall it presents the events of the time very well. It has many wonderful performances from the supporting cast, especially Gladys Cooper as Sr. Vauzou, Lee J. Cobb as Dr. Douzous, Charles Bickford as Father Peyramale, and of course Vincent Price as the Imperial Prosecutor. Jennifer Jones won an Oscar for her performance, which is breathtaking and very moving. This is a fantastically clean and beautiful print and the sound is great. Thanks so very much for uploading it!
anything with Vincent Price in it is good
Vincent Price eventually became a Catholic himself.

Yes, thank you for sharing this!
It is historically accurate
I’m a person of Jewish heritage, this is a tear jerker and a great 👍 movie. There is one God for all of us, know explained is needed.Jennifer Jones was one of my favorite 🤩 actresses
Many Jewish people (Franz Werfel, Alfred Newman, David Selznick, etc.) made this beautiful film possible, God bless them.
I've got this video at home. It is a wonderful film, and now it's here on my laptop too! And I pray every day to Saint Bernadette Soubirous!
Beautiful. "The chosen ones have always been those who have suffered....."
What a wonderful and moving film and the emotion you feel
The chosen ones....Ha! If you love to suffer..then go for it.
“The chosen ones have always been those who have suffered.”Our Lord Jesus suffered on the
Cross. He was the Son of God made Man.He died on the Cross for Our Sins.He rose from the
Dead and in now seated at the right hand of the Father in Heaven.I would say that the ones that
were chosen had a task to do,and they did that task through Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Mary,Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ,The Immaculate Conception,Queen of Heaven, came to
see the chosen ones all over the World and they did tasks.Yes they did suffer.
Each and everyone of us in life do suffer.I personally have suffered through my Diabetes
Type 1 on Insulin. We must have Faith,Hope and Charity, for our reward in Heaven will be
Great. The chosen ones have given us the way to Eternal Life in Heaven, and we must
follow that way through Christ Our Lord.
Your’s Most Sincerely.
Colin McCarthy.
@@colinmccarthy7921 We all suffer. It is part of the human condition. But suffering is not a requirement for a relationship with your god. Only the politics of religious doctrine promote that nonsense as a means to guilt the masses in order to control them. You don't have to suffer. If there is love from a god, it isn't given with the expectation that you should suffer in order to be worthy of it. Any church or religious leader who leads you to believe otherwise isn't worthy of your time or devotion. The sin of wishing for and condoning your suffering is theirs and theirs alone. Walk away.
Yes,I believe suffering is a Human
Condition. We all suffer in our lives.
I suffer because I am a Diabetic
Type 1 on Insulin.
Our Lord suffered on the Cross
because of our Sins. This he had
to do because of the Love he has
for us and to save Our Souls.
When Our Lord Jesus was on Earth,
he healed many people,through
Miracles. This the love Our Lord Jesus
showed us.Adam and Eve committed
the Original Sin.They were told not
to have the apple of the tree. The Devil
tempted them and they ate the apple.
Maybe, just maybe if Adam and Eve
did not eat the apple then Our Lord
Jesus would not off suffered on the
Cross.God created the Devil and all
the Angels. The Devil was an Angel.
Why didn’t”God get rid of the Devil
in the first place, because we would
never have Evil on the Earth.God is
all Powerful and Glory and Love.
God always was,is,and always will
be.Maybe this was God’s Plan for
us all.I am a Roman Catholic and
we must have Faith,Hope and Charity
through Jesus Christ Our Lord.I would
loved to see Our Lord Jesus and Mary
the Mother of Jesus,the Immaculate
Conception before I die.Maybe Our
Lord Jesus will grant me my wish.
Author of story is also jude
I agree about being a cinematic masterpiece! That one scene when St. Bernadette surveys her room in the convent, her eyes move from left to right, welled up with tears, is when I sob uncontrollably. Jennifer Jones portrayal of Bernadette was superb.
I also love “Good Morning Miss Dove,” starring Jennifer Jones. She was such a wonderful actress.
@@bobbettedavis9168 When Jennifer Jones won the Oscar for this film, she apologized to fellow nominee Ingrid Bergman, who played Maria in "For Whom the Bell Tolls/" But Ingrid said, "Oh, no, Jennifer, your Bernadette was far better than my Maria." Both actresses were magnificent.
@@bobbettedavis9168 Anther film helped Jones in her performance. The first time Berbadette meets The Lady, Bernadette looks up and then drops her eyelids in a beautiful nod toward humility.
Im new to this film. I watched it! And now Ive already pegged it as one my all time favorite movies. I want to go to Lourdes now and experience that very holy place. I named my daughter Lourdes when she was born in 2003. I had very little knowledge of this sacred event! It was a sign! :)
My mum took me to lourdes, it was the best experience of my life, I visited the places St Bernadette would have walked, its so beautiful and sad, thankyou for sharing this video X
Brilliant movie.I've seen this movie over 700 times and I could still watch it again.Jennifer Jones acting was great as Saint Bernadette.Gladys Cooper is a superb actress and she played her role to perfection in my opinion. The Auntie was wonderful the way she stood up to Bernadettes parents and Bernadettes boyrfiend was good....I'm a non catholic ,2 b silent in that much pain is coz she knew how to focus well.Saint Bernadette was the best spiritual princess that has walked the earth,Mother Mary was the queen of spirituality .
I'm a non-catholic LMFAO.
this is a movie of a young girl's faith, I love it
This is my third or fourth time watching this movie. I just finished watching the bells of St Mary. I love these older more genuine movies. I also love movies about Nuns. Something I always wanted to be from the age of 7 years old but never knew how to go about it.
Very inspiring movie ever. I LOVE IT. If this story could be upgraded to HD and standard quality by some film producers now it will give the strongest message to the World!!

Does not matter how many times i have seen this movie, i still cry each and every time i see it. It is so powerful and moving. Words cannot describe what i feel. My favorite movie of Saints.
Thank you Andre, and God Bless you too.

And how right you are!. Because I feel the exact same way as you do regardless how many times I watch this film. It's beyond watching a historical religious film, it is truly an experience. Hollywood is incapable of making films like this today..All the best to you Bruna!!
I agree pikenova48. They don't make movies like this anymore! What a shame.--- Giving faith to people is a gift. This movie was a beautiful gift for me.

Thank you for your reply!
is anyone who co starred in this film still alive?
In the early 1990's, I saw this b/w as a silent movie ( I think). That is irrelevant considering the impact it had on my life. It reached deep into my heart. Never forgot it. Then as it so happened this movie recently popped up on the screen. It never occurred to me that it would be available on youTube or any other easily accessible avenue. This 1943 version was even better than what I remembered of the older one. It mesmerizes and touches one's heart's desire to know God, HIS holiness, goodness, and love. It asks me to consider my soul and its salvation. Thank you very much, Darren Curran, for this gift.
This film won 4 Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role
- Jennifer Jones for playing Bernadette Soubirous, Best Art Direction - Black-and-White, Best Cinematography - Black-and-White and Best Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture.
Atonishing that this was Jennifer Jones FIRST movie.
When Jennifer Jones got a divorce, we were not supposed to watch her movies anymore.
