Im a protestant irishman my ancestor roger casement was at the easter rising and yes all the traditions should be celebrated from both sides and may peace be with everyone.

They tried to get American support - failed.
They tried to recruit Irish POW's in Germany - failed.
They tried to hold Dublin for 30 days until Ireland rose- failed twice over.

Desmond 1934 true. But that wasn't the argument Jim made. He said the reason he wouldn't want the rebellion celebrated was because it was in "some grubby foreign place". When it was pointed out that the Battle of the Boyne was in the south, then he panicked. He's a bigot, he's trying to use any excuse he can. If you want to celebrate the 12th that's fine, but if you are allowed to celebrate then Nationalists should be allowed to celebrate the rebellion.
not in 1690.but the native Irish in Ireland had the identity of being Irish and not British.A republic of Ireland was declared in 1916 but was officially declared the Irish free state with 26 counties, essentially an independent entity and completely independent as the Republic of Ireland in 1949

Some of the arguments put forward by the Unionists in this clip defy belief. If it weren't for the Easter Rising, NI may never have been established, as prior to that event, most people in the 26 counties favoured home rule. The alternative model at that time was a 32 county state, under British rule, with a devolved parliament in Dublin. But after the executions of the rebel leaders, Irish independence became the preference of the majority of Irish people, and a very real proposition, leading to the Irish War of Independence and subsequent partition of Ireland. So to claim that the Easter Rising had nothing to do with the formation of NI is patent nonsense.

In 1916, Belfast was under the same jurisdiction as the rest of Ireland so it didn't just happen in the Republic Of Ireland as Jim Allister suggests, it happened in the Island of Ireland which was all under the same sovereignty at the time.

The people of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are the same people bar the Scottish foreign planters.
Today they are very different people. The people of all sides of the community in NI have more in common with each other than they do with those in GB or ROI. They can also collectively identify with their shared past moreso than any outsider.
***** I have to disagree with you there. There is no NI culture, it is a country barely 90 years old! The Catholic nationalist people in NI have much more in common with the rest of the Irish as they are one and the same people historically and share Irish culture, language sport GAA etc. A Donegal man and a Catholic from Co.Down have much more in common than a Catholic from Co.Down and a Loyalist from the Shankill. Apart from accent, what do they have in common?, and the other Ulster counties in Ulster which are often forgot about by unionists, Donegal, Monaghan and Cavan. The Unionist people have alienated themselves with their dismissal and repulsion of all things Irish. I would agree however that a Unionist from NI has more in common with someone from ROI than with someone from England even if they wouldn't want to admit it or not.
Walter White Fair point. Perhaps what would be more accurate is for me to say that I feel a Unionist and a Nationalist from the 6counties would have more in common with each other than they would with me. I can only imagine that a person from "the Mainland" would feel even more detached.
Walter White I think that this is a gross oversimplification of the facts. Maybe (and I know many exceptions), what you said is true for loyalist or nationalist "strongholds", but not for all of the country. Many people here have grown up in mixed communities, or certainly communities that don't dismiss all things of their supposedly opposite number. The youth of the country mix with near impunity through university and college.
Admittedly, geographical and educational divides exist and there are places where communities have isolated themselves, but (and I hate this strange youtube thing of trying to assert your own validity by stating what you "are") as someone who was raised protestant in a predominantly protestant community, I have a lot in common my many Catholic friends, and I find that most of my friendship groups are totally mixed.
I think that Northern Ireland needs to stop compartmentalizing itself into two factions and realize that there is far more diversity of thought and perception within its disputed borders than the majority of the eejits in Stormont want to accept.

Mr Trump (along with a lot of Americans) is that he doesn't seem to realise that Islamic terrorism is a very small issue. Terrorist attacks have been on the decline since 2008 in the US, and in 2011, 4 deaths were the result of Islamic extremists, while 9 were the result of Right wing extremists. (Source at bottom) Is Trump stamping down on Christian terrorists? A man in Colorado went in to an abortion clinic and killed 3 pregnant women and injuring 9 more. Why didn't this get the same kind of coverage as the Boston Marathon? Probably because "Christian fundamentalist" didn't have the same ring to it as "Islamic terrorist" to Fox News viewers. Also, there were 15 deaths out of a population of 322 million is extremely small (0.00000005%). Yet why is this such a big issue for some Americans? I've lived in the North of Ireland all my life, where the chances of getting caught up in something are substantially higher, yet I don't live in constant paranoia of being blown up.
And finally, Trump was a very effective Presidential candidate. He got people who felt let down by the system, who hated people like Hillary Clinton and everything they stood for and got them motivated and angry and he made promises he couldn't uphold. Like the wall, or travel ban or affordable care act. Because he didn't realise that being president doesn't give you unlimited powers. He's flip flopped on issues so much it's impossible to know where he stands. He went into a meeting with China's leader totally convinced that North Korea could be easily dealt with. Xi Jiping then explained the history of China and Korea briefly in only 10 minutes and that was enough for him to change his mind. That's scary because either his hardline stances on subjects are uninformed and based solely on emotion or he is extremely easily manipulated and seeing as his main source of information seems to be Breitbart instead of White House briefings, that should be concerning.

Jim was sitting in a crouched position next to John and as the debate progressed, he relaxed a little. However, O,Doherty was waxing lyrical about some point or other and the look on Jim,s face told you that Jim really wanted to be a thousands miles away from the bearded O,Doherty. Suddenly John tapped Jim on the elbow to empathise a point he was making. Jim jumped like his sphincter had been ruptured. He gave that startled look of awe, He had been touched by a man..I recall the hysterical laughter from my wife who had been recording the program. Later she replayed the incident and you could see the fright in Jim,s eyes. Do you know what that means she laughted.
I had no idea what she was talking about. Women are more aware of these things than men are. I now believe she was correct.

Surely they are Irish but with a British identity as well? I have read that many of them (and probably the majority) have Irish ancestors along with Scottish/Welsh and some English too. They originally came from Ireland settled mostly in Scotland and then moved back to Ireland.
All the peoples of these islands are interelated if you go back far enough though some people unfortunately pretend that we are not.

He's right, the 1916 Rising was a failure - but that failure is the very reason why we have our independence today. When the British decided to execute the leaders of that Rebellion all they managed to do was turn the Irish population against them. Once that happened, and the fighting started again, the British had no way of winning it. When you lose the people you lose the war.

McAllister is incorrect when he states that the Rising took place in the Republic of Ireland. Ireland was not a Republic until 1949. Its official name is Ireland as it was in 1916 before the island was forcibly partitioned in 1921 under the threat of further state violence from Westminster.

1916 rekindled the independence movement which led to British withdrawal in 1921, which conceivably led to the push for independence in India in 1948. Quite a pivotal event I think .

i know i speak for the majority of people in the north of england when i say that we just don't care about northern ireland. if you walk around manchester and ask anyone their opinion of people from NI you will find them considered religious nutters. there is little or no understanding of what the problems are and no inclination to find out.

Yes, *English* elitists started this war many centuries ago & successive regimes *right up to this day* have consistantly conjured up & implemented policies, you know, the old divide & conquer rule through brutal tactics & oppressive legislation.
In the 1970s when the British army were getting their asses handed to them by the IRA they realised the mistake they were making by putting English,Welsh & to a far lesser degree Scottish regiments on the frontline so they took a leaf out of Americas book & aped their strategy in Vietnam with a policy which was known as Vietnamization.
A concept drawn up to localise the conflict, the best way of ensuring the border with the north survived.
Which of course failed.
The inevitable outcome that will befall this failed, sectarian little statelet which was created NOT by the Irish but the scum who rule & who laugh at us all, the great unwashed.
What the British came up with was their own version of Vietnamization, Ulsterisation.
In conjunction with this policy they implemented criminalisation which had the effect they so desired: Localising the conflict therefore Sectarianising it *yet further* ( Remember sectarianism was something the British settlers & rulers brought with them, we, the Irish did not create such poison nor do we want it )
The old divide & rule which the English are true masters of.

The UK didn't exist yet. Queen Anne Stuart united it. So yes, one could argue, that the loyalists are actually royalists, but Irish nonetheless.

Fair is fair. I am a Republican and would be very unhappy to see the establishment of Northern Ireland being celebrated in the South. I'm sure my Unionist friends in the North would have a similar discomfort with celebrating the Rising.
Yes but the reason the rising took place was to try and free Ireland from British rule and colonialism and to keep it United the other was to segregate and divide and keep the Catholic or nationalist population down as they did for best part of 60 years .

The 1916 Easter rising runs in complete contradiction to the founding of Northern Ireland. It would be completely mad for N.I. to recognise this as a public holiday considering what it celebrates. If an individual or legal organisation wishes to recognise it then they are perfectly at liberty to do so. There's no need to use antagonistic language about it.
However let's be honest about what happened and how this but of history has been "romanticized" to fit a republican agenda.

When it happened the people of Dublin were outraged by the deaths, injuries and damage to homes and businesses it caused, hundreds dead, thousands wounded. The first victim was an Irishman, an unarmed policeman in his 50's at Dublin castle. A senseless murder.
The declaration signed by the 7 shows that they had colluded with the Germans for aid and weapons so they were tried for train and shot. The Malitia was released after a few months of imprisonment. These 7 people had colluded with the power that had committed the infamous RAPE OF BELGIUM whist fighting against their own injustices (ironically). Three was moo real plan or agreement between the 7 as to what to do if they had won.
The Declaration of Independence was signed by 7 people. The Ulster Covenant by 450,000 approx.
The rising was a failure but it has been romanticized and politicized. The IRB got off lightly. Had this been committed against say the Germans they would probably have executed every last one of the Irish Republican Brigade.
As a footnote the 12th is not a public holiday in the Republic, Orange parades are virtually non existent and only happen around the border area. The Republic has with the collusion pig the RC church actively reduced its protestant population by 75% in the last 97 years.
