I used to have a family of skunks, 2 possums, and a small raccoon that would come out around my shop that I put cat food out for specifically for feral cats that I had already had spade or neutered. But funny enough the skunks and the possums would let me pet their head or stroke their tail when they were eating if you didn't make any sudden moves and even if you did startle them a little bit the skunks would just scratch their nails against the concrete and kind of jump at me,..but they never sprayed me.

@@anonymousperson8259 Thanks again for commenting - The skunk's spray is its main defense. Its not exhausting for them to spray it's just that if they empty the tank it can take them up to 10 days to refill - that's a long time to go without your main defense. Consequently, the skunks are actually pretty careful how much and how often they spray. We see raccoons actually sitting on skunks and they both just continue to eat. Nature is amazing.

Thanks for watching and commenting - It is indeed very interesting to observe the behavior of the various animals and birds that visit the cameras. We have learned a lot since the fall of 2018 when the cams started live-streaming.
Skunks only spray when they feel their life is in danger, an ordinary fight with fellow critter of the same size isn't worth a spraying for a Skunk! Skunks do have big sharp teeth and long claws as well as their famous chemical weapon!
They are also reticent to spray because it can take up to 10 days for them to "recharge the tank" after discharge. They could be defenseless for that time - other than their teeth and claws - lol
@Kalimata101 You're very welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting... I never knew that ferrets could spray a scent - probably not a pleasant one either - lol
getting bitten by an opossum would definitely be reason enough to spray I would guess the tank is empty. Or these two could be familiar with each other and do this song and dance every night.
@@codysmith605 Thanks for watching and commenting - We have learned from observing these critters that a skunk will hardly ever spray around a food source. I heard somewhere that skunks have a pretty keen sense of smell and they find their own spray very offensive too. So it makes sense that he didn't spray around his food, plus the possum wasn't acting very aggressive, just wanted some munchies!
@@sheamustuohy5084 You are correct - Skunks have a very keen sense of smell and hearing, but poor eyesight. Another reason they don't spray is that it takes them up to 10 days to "re-charge" their ultimate weapon - so they only use it as a last resort.
@@WRCatBWHQ people don’t realize that a lot of animals are that way. Their big bad weapons always come at a cost. Venomous snakes are heavily taxed to make their venom. That’s why many times they deliver a dry bite. They have to really feel that their life is in serious danger to spend all that venom that took a lot of time and a lot of resources to make. Black widow spiders are the same way. I have had widows run across my hands and have even brushed up against them with no bite. You have to literally press them between your hands or otherwise crush them to get one to bite. Not always, but most of the time, so still be cautious around snakes and spiders with venom. It makes sense that a skunk would also take time and calories to manufacture a cocktail of chemicals that make up it’s WMS, or Weapon Of Mass Stink. Great video by the way. I really enjoyed that. Opossums are more formidable than people think. They have sharp teeth and claws, and they also have a somewhat opposable thumb, like a raccoon.

Thanks for watching and commenting - Opossums have excellent hearing and outstanding senses of smell and touch which they use extensively to find and evaluate food. While it looks like it is "immune" to skunk smell, what is really going on is that skunks will rarely unleash their ultimate weapon around a food source. You are absolutely correct - the skunks very rarely spray around a food source. The other critters seem to know that and aren't intimidated by their hissy fits - lol

Damn I love opossums
Opossums are weirdly "cute" - lol
I used to have a family of skunks, 2 possums, and a small raccoon that would come out around my shop that I put cat food out for specifically for feral cats that I had already had spade or neutered.
But funny enough the skunks and the possums would let me pet their head or stroke their tail when they were eating if you didn't make any sudden moves and even if you did startle them a little bit the skunks would just scratch their nails against the concrete and kind of jump at me,..but they never sprayed me.
Thanks for watching and commenting - I love the feedback...
It sounds like you have discovered what we observe many times - all the critters will eat together when there is no threat. We have seen as many as 5 distinct species eating together - ua-cam.com/video/ppRXLA60VA8/v-deo.html
I heard spraying is actually exhausting for a skunk and they actually have to recover from it for maybe several hours to even a day.
@@anonymousperson8259 Thanks again for commenting -
The skunk's spray is its main defense.
I'm proud to see the opossum remain undeterred.
Thanks for watching and commenting -
We have seen as many as 5 different species sharing the feeder with no major confrontations. The various critters have learned to tolerate each other. Things are a little different in breeding season however - mothers with young to protect can be pretty nasty...
There was even more squealing and stomping than I remembered! 🤣 And he got bitten on the tail not once, but twice!
LOL - I took time to edit out everything but the squealing and the stomping...
Love seeing how wild animals interact. Cute how they both trying to be tough. Haha
Thanks for watching and commenting -
All the critters have their little power shows but it is rare for the "show" to turn into something more serious.
Possums have 50 teeth, more than ANY land mammal in America. That's quite a chomp.
Thanks for watching and commenting -
That is indeed "quite a chomp." We even named an opossum "Chomp" because of its tendency to bite everything around it.
When watching this, I couldn't help but imagine it as the beginning of a relationship. This kind of content could inspire a cartoon series.
Thanks for watching and commenting - That would be a strange relationship - lol
the possum is like chill out lil bro there's enough food for both of us

Wow!! Things that go on while we’re sleeping!! Great video! Thank you for sharing!!
Its strange to see what these great creatures are up to when they think no one is looking. Very interesting.

It is indeed very interesting to observe the behavior of the various animals and birds that visit the cameras. We have learned a lot since the fall of 2018 when the cams started live-streaming.
Thank goodness there's no smell-a-vision. Lol.
Even with all that activity, the skunk never sprayed. They save their spray to use as a last resort when they feel in danger
@Kalimata101 You're very welcome!
Thanks for watching and commenting...
I never knew that ferrets could spray a scent - probably not a pleasant one either - lol
getting bitten by an opossum would definitely be reason enough to spray I would guess the tank is empty. Or these two could be familiar with each other and do this song and dance every night.
@@codysmith605 Thanks for watching and commenting -
We have learned from observing these critters that a skunk will hardly ever spray around a food source. The snapping and posturing by the critters is just that. They all tend to ignore the skunk's little hissy fits because they know it won't spray. Scott, the cam owner, has said it is very rare to smell skunk around the feeding station.
What a great video, Nat Geo should see this. That skunk sure is feisty and nothing stops the possum. Thank you for posting.
You're welcome. The thing that amazes me with the interaction of both opossums and raccoons with the skunks is that the skunks never seem to be upset enough to spray the other animal. Check out a raccoon actually sitting on a skunk and not getting sprayed - ua-cam.com/video/feoMDR8609w/v-deo.html
@@sheamustuohy5084 plus spraying takes alot of energy. They only spray if they really feel their life is in danger. I'm glad everyone got to eat.

Considering how short the lifespan of an opossum, it makes sense it doesn't let a skunk bully it.
Thanks for watching and commenting -
That's true, opossums life span in the wild is fairly short. Since most of the critters seem to know a skunk rarely sprays around a food source, none of them let the skunks bully them. We have raccoons that routinely sit on skunks while they both just keep eating. Nature is amazing...
Are they friends? Seems like the oppossum was either not sprayed or does not care about possible stink???
Thanks for watching and commenting -
I wouldn't say they are "friends" - more like acquaintances. The various species in this area have grown accustomed to each other as they approach the feeder. The other critters seem to have learned from experience that the skunks will usually NOT use their ultimate weapon around a food source - even they don't like their own smell. Opossums have excellent hearing and outstanding senses of smell and touch which they use extensively to find and evaluate food. While it looks like it is "immune" to skunk smell, what is really going on is that skunks will rarely unleash their ultimate weapon around a food source. They don't like that smell either - lol
