For the sort of winter riding I do, my single speed cromolly fully rigid 26" wheel MTB works a treat. Not as fast as my summer MTBs, but a heck of a lot of fun.
Yep, same. I have a 26' specialized 90s MTB converted to single speed. Less is more in winter I don't want to worry about gears or suspension.
Probably found a good point here 26ers will clear mud faster than 29ers. Much more suitable for UK mud. I still have my winter bike Specialised Rockhopper comp 2000
26er all day for me
Yeah, that doesn’t sound fun at all, due to geometry 😂
Yep fully rigid, single speed and no dropper is the way to go for easy maintainance. Makes you work harder too so a short blast feels like you've had a good ride.
My winter MTB is a 26” XC hardtail from ca. 2004, which I bought for only like 20 pounds and soon after equipped it with Shimano XTR 3x9 drivetrain with dual-control shifters/brake levers, which cost me only like 80 pounds from my good friend (whole groupset except for crankset). In the ‘winter MTB’ setup I use some more aggressive XC tires and a Marzzochi Bomber fork that came originally on the bike (can’t believe how smooth it still runs, I doubt there was any service done to it). For the rest of the year I swap out the fork for a ridgid one, install full mudguards and switch to fast rolling tires and it completely transforms its personality to what I consider the ultimate city commuter.
I really like your setup though! Not a huge fan of the camo, but seems really like a dream bike for these months.
Rich, great build! I'd like to see a video about the fork kit you installed. I ride a hardtail and a full sus but the hardtail is the bike I turn to most often.
Awesome Rich! I've just built a hardtail for myself... Bird Zero AM frame, NP Horizon wheels, Lyrix 180mm fork, Bird bars, Burgtec stem, grips & pedals, SRAM eagle groupset and guide brakes - pretty happy with my first build! 🤘
My winter bike is a full-sus 140/130 E-MTB on 27.5/3.0 tires. It's the only thing that can plough through snow.
I ride a hardtail and only that and love it!
I have vibrocore bars which made a HUGE difference. Used to suffer from hand paint but not anymore since i have those.
Nicely done Payner! Love it, rowdy fun ahead for sure, winter and beyond no doubt!
Oh yes!
Spot on build Richard. I agree with your choice of alloy bars and rims, I've tried carbon bars and rims myself, seperatly, and have always found them harsh. My fastest time down launch pad in fod is on a hard tail. Not tried a nukeproof scout yet, but it's on the list.
Your ultimate winter bike is the bike I ride all year round
In the process of rebuilding my Orange Crush for the winter, and I agree aluminum for everything.
Never thought I’d see a better looking hard tail than my Kona big honzo, complete with lyrik, dropper, etc, but you sir have bested me with those camo stickers on that sweet nukeproof. Nice!
Very nice build Rich very nice indeed 🔥👊🤘
Great stuff #GMBN 👍
What a fantastic machine!!
That would be my year round bike for sure!!
Great design on a well thought out project!!! 🍻
Nice Build Rich thats a sweet ride, enjoy your cup of tea.
Thanks 👍
I'm so jealous that your version of a winter bike is just a bit simplified ride. Over here in the North East of the USA it's almost all fat bikes. At the very least wide studded tires, but then you can't go out until the fatties have packed the trails down.
looks awesome!! i'd love it!!
Love my hardtail. On one tiktik. I often leave the full squish in the shed and take the HT.
Hardtail for the win! Loving the colour combo , you just need a ' hunter blaze orange 'lid to complete the look !! Definitely what you want in this weather 😏
Right on!
I love how that came out. Looks friggin amazing!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome build! Love me some hardtails!
Great video 😃 Really nice bike 😃 Winter is the time for me to use the wahoo kickr 😃😃 ❤
very similar to the bike I'm running year round, ragley big al 29er fox 36 at 150mm and some nukeproof horizon v2 wheels. It's a very versatile bike. It tends to be a little bit terrifying on really rough tracks but ace everywhere else!
I think the Vibrocore Bars actually are more noticeable than the vibrocore wheels, but I really do think they both help
Love it, put a Vorsprung Smashpot in the fork and it will be perfect! Plus, you know it would feel more like a coil fork then 😀
Mr. Brayton would approve the camo graphics for sure! what a winter dream rig you built ^^
We think so too!, thanks for the great comment!
who needs a quad when you can go deer hunting on this bad boy
Koolest bike ive seen yet....wish i had one ☺
Sweet set up
A very nice looking bike Rich, good job dude.
woo! love it!
I like the black with the camo, the bars with the orange grips are fantastic
Fantastic looking ride! Well done, Rich, on the design too!
Glad you like it!
Where did you get the camo stickers?
I've got a 2021 self built santa cruz chameleon, burgtec cockpit, mostly XT brakes/gears and DT swiss hoops.....brilliant winter bike, and for rides with lots of road or climbing. Saves my more expensive full sus from all the mud, grit, ice, etc
You don't need a chain guide on a hardtail. The length of the top side of the chain does not change due to suspension. So it stays on very well.
I've never dropped the chain on my hardtail so far.
About a bash guard, that's up to you I guess, If the only thing you might hit are wet roots, you can do without I guess.
really? on my hardtail my chain comes off when in not even on the trails yet, just on the road, but that could be my very worn chainring and chain which have been on for a year, ordered some new ones that hopefully will fix my issue
@@leodufour2 Of course, in my statement I assume you do have a narrow wide chainring and a clutch derailleur.
With that I've never dropped a chain, not even on the roughest trails.
Gentlemen, hats off!! This bike is insane and beautiful :) It remains only to dream that Santa Claus will deliver such a bike this year :) strong Like from Poland👍
Poland... Instantly NS and their sister company Octane One come to mind. I have a O1 Sour 2021 which i built up from a frame which comes with boost unlike the complete bike atleast according to the website the complete one doesn't..
Love this thing! Handles wonderfully!
Oh, interesting tip on criss crossing the cables
I am so stoked because next week comes my Nukeproof Scout Comp Bullet Grey. I also wanted to make my own build, but I love the Bullet Grey Edition and unfortunately it isnt possible to buy only the frame.
It really annoyed me when I saw they were only offering Yellow or Black frames...I love the Bullet Grey+Yellow. I love my Concrete Grey V2 but really would have swapped out in a heartbeat
Not gonna lie that looks like a perfect bike year round absolutely love it and I’m not a fan of carbon at all. Going to build something similar next year.
That looks amazing
Thanks! It's such a sick looking bike! 👊
It surpried me how decently Rich applied the vinyl. Now of course it isn't straight but it is pretty close. And it takes practice to get that shit right.
"when it grinds down to a paste over the winter, it's not going to kill me to replace it"... uses XTR cassette
Love it. I'm gonna take credit for convincing you on 150mm forks following our chat at FOD 👌
Looks epic mate 👊
Legend!
Nothing like schlepping a decent hardtail on the Mendips to keep you sharp over the winter. Slide and glide!
You betcha!
Rich Payne, bringing the pain with the custom Payner. Sweet build there Rich. Makes me want to do a custom build too. Wonder what I could build for a budget of $1200? Actually I could buy a sweet dirt jumper or seriously upgrade the one I have. Food for thought. 🤔
Oooooo... I'm in love. I would give anything for such a beautiful machine....
I've been looking for graphics for my 2022 Reactor but can only find the old style graphics (2019). Where did you get yours from?
As long as you ride and enjoy it, just ride!!!!
SWEET! Not a fan of camo, but it works on this thing really well.
Love the bike, and the graphics. What shooting is it you do Rich.
Super nice bike 😊👍🏻👍🏻
Best winter hard tail- Spot Rocker single speed BELT drive. Minimal maintenance, learn how to maintain speed with the SS setup!
A rear mud guard/butt saver is a must since you will be hitting the rear tire on a hardtail ... think of it as a skid plate for your bum
Okay i was skeptical at first because it wasn't a fatty. But damn. . That bike is gorgeous!
Cracking looking steed, where did you get the decals from?
Is that in Bath? I love bath 😊Beautiful place!
Rich bike looks brilliant, can you tell me where you sourced the custom decals from?
I gotta laugh, my winter bike experience is snowdrifts, ice, -30c.
I ride my commuter 365 in Edmonton Alberta Canada.
I use 700 35c studded tires, rigid aluminum frame, fixie gears, No brakes.
Lots of people giving me weird looks on the cold or snowy days.
But come summer weather I'm fully trained for race day.
Ultimate winter bike = someone else's!
Nice build should of gave it a rear mudguard to keep the backside a lil dryer
Can you do a review and break down of how the trutune works? Saw the ads but i cant find any real user reviews on it. Does it really make it feel like a coil fork and what are the benefits?
Great video and a Xmas present to all hardtailers. Would love a ballpark figure on the cost.
frame 600
fork 700
wheels 600
slx group 300
saint breaks 350
stem and bars 150
budget dropper 200
tyres 100
seat and grips 100
small parts and stuff you always forget 200
that's 3300 euro i am estimating when i look up some components (2850 pounds) :( also did a scout build this week but took almost all parts from a 2019 fs trailbike, so it was only the frame, the bottom bracket and some cables for me. btw. that old trail bike cost about the same as my estimate when i bought it and it had fox factory parts on it...
Well for the ultimate winterbike I would probably go with mine, a freshly built nukeproof scout. ;)
Hardtail was my ultimate winter bike, however, lately it's been my pain cave/road bike on Zwift. I guess both lol.... Summer or better weather is my full sus.
Man ! the bike looks incredible, but why are the cables out there and criss-crossed :)) ? I would have expected those to be inside and even it looks strange a rear mud guard is a must for the bad weather, don't you think so? and btw how much was the total cost? Greetings from Transylvania.
im 13 weighing in at 110 with a fox 38 at 70 psi people have told me its way to much psi but im still bottoming it out on big features. should i use same psi or take some out?
Winter riding in Iowa generally means snow and/or ice, so a fatbike is generally a requirement (often with studded tires).🥶
Hello! Here in Finland. I ride little in my hardtail. Because is snow. But all around year my choice is Fatbike Kona Wo and my e-bike Fitnord Rumble 1000wh Fatbike. Winter Fatbike is way better than Hardtail. And now i ride my Kona Wo fatbike.
Lol I also crossed my cables on my scout
Thought you might have started off with a Double (the non-electric Japanese 2wd bicycle).
Cool bike but some interesting choices considering its to be used for messy conditions in winter. Why an xtr cassette? Carbon bar (one up) is nicer since it doesn’t hold the cold like an alum bar does. Also, SLX? Might as well save a few bucks and just do deore throughout but with XT shifter. Again, nice bike but I’d be saving some money on some of these items that will see some nasty conditions.
Rich, you say you want as much bump absorption as possible but go for alu bars? I find the right carbon bar dampens the jolts, especially in the cold?
Where did you get the graphics done?
Nukeproof scout??? Very original, i knew it before to watch
That is exactly what I'm after.... by Jebus that is a nice bit of kit
Where can I get custom Marin decals on the frame like that?
How much did it cost? I know prices vary but rough cost for all the parts?
Good content
Thanks!
Orange crush pro 😍
Nukeproof scout 🤘🤙
Another Scout in the GMBN fleet! Boom . Make sure you join the Nukeproof Scout Riders Group Rich 😉
Think that is all of them on a Scout now :)
@@NukeProofBikes1 superb work ☢️
"I've gone for an SLX groupset because it works great and doesn't break the bank" (casually proceeds mounting an XTR cassette that costs as much as the entire SLX groupset)
Watching this and sitting here recalling the guy who was saying hard tails are garbage in the comments of the “buying and upgrading a budget bike vs just getting an expensive bike”….the guy was saying that “everyone at GMBN said they were garbage too”
Might have missed it but where are the graphics from? Thanks.
where did you get all those custom decals?
Welcome to the crew Rich. Get your audition tape in for the next Scoutin' About
That would be ace all the regular Scoutin about guys and Rich 🤘
Happy to hop aboard captain
@@richardpayne5176 where did you get the camo decals rich? Ive been looking everywhere for them
knowing your bike history, would you run a gearbox zerode belt drive in British winter? hardtail is mint
I definitely would the only off putting thing would be the grip shift sadly
I have experienced that carbon handle bars reduce more of the bumps than alloy
Where the cable end for the gear cable b roll at 2:46?
Ass a hard assed hard tail lover Rithie I am digging the build! Really like the camo decals ...did you have to remove the original decals from the frame or did it fit directly over?? Savage looking hartail beast...enjoy taming her over the winter!!
Rigid single speed is the true winter option.
Definitely 👍
I use a fixed rear sprocket without any brakes on my winter commuter.
Don’t be an idiot, I’d like to see you tackle my winter trails on a fixie 😂😂😂😂
How do you end up with a barrow full of bike parts to construct? Surely bike shops want to stop you missing them out?
Rich, don't let Blake anywhere near that bike...ya might not get it back. I heard he is a certified scout hoarder!!
Winter bike. Hardtail, dropper is my bike.
Winter weapon? Sure, but I ride mine all year round HT are so much more "right lets go" than the fancy full suss that make them in my opinion the first choice most of the time.
Thanks for the Vid, I'm in the USA, at 3,000 meters, our winters are a bit different (snow/ice). I'm wondering what your weight is and what tire pressure you are running in the front and the especially the rear?
170lb 21.5psi front 23psi rear
@@phenofinder9145 Thank you mate
@@JBean_COCR that's on 2.4's
Perfect the local Mendip trails there Rich. Gets really sloppy and dirty in the winter. Perfect weapon for the Somerset Alps!! Also love that it its an accessible bike, price-wise.
"We are going to run an SLX drivetrain"...proceeds to put on a $400+ XTR cassette
Who did the graphics? Love them
Winter bike = fat bike my favorite is riding while it's snowing
My ultimate winter bike would be my own bike but with someone else to clean it 🤣
