I know a lot of you are HUGE fans of the scout, and for many of you it's the best hardtail you've ridden. Many are hoping my reviews will be a validation the decision they made to purchase a certain bike. I totally get that. If you're happy with your bike and you think it's the greatest bike ever, then it shouldn't matter what i say about it.
However, the purpose of bike reviews is to be objective and explain how a bike rides compared to the 70+ other modern hardtails I've ridden. A lot of people get defensive and like to attack me and question my findings if they didnt get the validation they were seeking. You're entitled to that, but i have zero ulterior motives in these reviews. I sincerely hope every hardtail i review blows my socks off and is the best bike I've ridden to date. So don't take it personally if your favorite bike isn't my favorite bike.
In the end, if you have one of these and you love it, that's all that matters.
I should had paid for your service before pulling the plug the mark 2 version of this bike. Not totally a fan of it. I'm still trying to figure out how to make it comfortable like my old Chromag. I should had just gotten another Chromag, but they were out of stock and the Scout was available.

Your ability to talk through steep technical climbs is crazy impressive. Great review, appreciated the words about not widening trails. There are some challenges coming for this sport around our environmental impact as it continues to gain popularity and land erosion progresses over time. We should start thinking now about what it will take to be sustainable for another 50 years at least if we want our kids and grandkids to continue enjoying this sport.
100% agree about thinking about the long-term effects of how we ride these trails.

At least in New England I'm wondering if there's going to be an interesting tension between widening existing trails to make them more accessible by adaptive vehicles versus keeping them more old school, or simply building more new trails designed to be adaptive from the start.

After three months of owning a a 275 Scout comp , Steve's review is spot on. it laps up reds, blacks , trail centre's , commutes , local woods and naughty stuff. I never feel compromised in any situation . I watched a lot of Hardtail Party before buying this bike , up there with the best mtb content on UA-cam.

Totally agree with you about trail conservation. Too many people, bikers and hikers, cut corners or obstacles either to make it easier or "quicker". One of our local trails systems has had the same issues over the last 30 years, one example is a very technical trail that started as a very challenging singletrack has now morphed into an 8-12' wide dusty "highway" because instead of learning to ride tech, people take "easier" lines.
It's so sad to see.
Blake from GMBN got me back to hardtails and obviously the Nukeproof. I’m going to buy the frame and build it myself. The frame on black with some of the parts in red is going to look great. Really appreciate your video. Glad you like the bike.
Great review Steve! 70mm BB drop and it ships with 2.35's! Wild spec, but sounds like it'd be a hoot on 2.6's. I have to say, for geo nerds Nukeproof is setting a new standard with their charts. Showing sagged and unsagged numbers is an amazing way to help customers figure out how their bike will compare and help people learn how geo changes as forks compress. Also gotta love the Tonka Truck vibe with the bright yellow paint and block letters lol.
Love the trails you're hitting today. Just hypnotized watching you go through them. I need to get my butt up to Sedona....(in Phx).

Great choice, mate! I bought mine in 2021 after my eMTB frame broke and I was just angry at the ebike ecosystem and getting new parts for it. Glad I got the money back and wanted to settle on something that always worked for me, a hardtail. And I love it. Up to this day I think it's the best thing that money could have bought me in my life. You can do "everything" with it. Downhill, Singletrails, Bikepacking, even Dirt Jumps.
My tipp: Go tubeless asap (if you feel comfortable with usually maintaining it). It's a much better feeling.
@@dailykoder7788 nice! Glad to hear! I went tubeless day one, and put carbon cranks on it from my Enduro bike (better use on the bike I'll be riding more). I also put a higher rise spank vibrocore handlebar on it to reduce some chop, and I like a higher rise bar anyway. I love it so far, admittedly I've only got to ride it once thanks to all the snow. I know what you mean. That said, a lot can affect the excitement of my reviews. If I had a long week with lots of miles and I'm tired, it's harder to stay excited for the review. There's a lot that goes into my emotional state when riding. Sometimes I get really excited about a bike and it shines through. Other times, it's a great bike, but due to other factors, the excitement doesn't come through. I definitely recommend paying attention to the way I describe the ride more than the excitement in my voice. That said, this bike didn't excite me like some other bikes.

Hi, I’m 6’2. I have a 18” Switch9er that I’ve always thought is a little to small for me. I’ve been looking a geo charts for ages and finally pulled the trigger on a new V3 XXL Scout frame. Built it up with 140mm Pikes and 35mm stem, 200mm dropper. It’s awesome, I love the longer reach (more room to move around) and the slightly longer chain stay. For my local xc loop it perfect 🤩. I’m really very happy with my decision. Keep up the great reviews 👍

wow, thanks for the honest review, i'm just a beginner in trail riding. despite the fact that I have a carbon high end xc full suspension bike (ghost lector fs) I spend most of my time on a relatively cheap octane one hooner, which I build myself because I wanted to try out how the bike is made. Riding the HT Octane One is much more fun, it is more stable in downhill and downhill, comfortable, fast (I gave me a light but durably rougher xc tires and inserts). If I had known this soon, I could have saved a lot of money for the Full suspension bike ...
Another great review. It's important for newer folks to acknowledge that you're riding enormous features well outside the daily realm of weekend warriors on a B bike. This bike is competent and will be a blast for anyone in the target demographic and budget. Nice riding as always, Steve. What views!
A side note, that cockpit is bananas. The dropper lever and bars probably retail for more than the frame.
The GoPro effect is real on this vid. Many of these features are really big in real life.

Had to come back to this video to let you know I just ordered a 26" Nukeproof CubScout for my sons 9th birthday. It comes tomorrow. Im pretty excited!! Not as excited as he will be though!!
Another fantastic review. I think a swiss army knife type of bike is the best kind of bike for new riders. They need something easy to ride and can handle everything well.
I do like everything about this bike except for the low BB... I understand the thought behind the geo and that it is not really needed to raise it with the 29" wheels (compared to old 26-er specs but I like my tall BB so much on the trails. 55-60mm is just ideal with 29x2.4, or maybe 65 with shorter cranks.
Hi there Steve, back in the days I was choosing between this frame and the Sonder transmitter. I went for the Sonder and past 2 and a half years by now I still love riding my choice.

Probably the most anticipated review I’ve seen you do. With that being said, I can appreciate the honesty you provided. There is so much hype around the scout and it has a massive following. I like how you broke down the use. Not great here and not great there, but good all around which makes it appealing. With that being said, if I was in the market for a new bike, I’d probably not consider the scout like I would’ve before. The Team Marin review had me wanting to buy one immediately but again not in the market just yet. Love the more budget bike reviews. Gotta get a Giant Fathom now. As always, great job and thank you.

That’s some impressive climbing. A couple of those spots are tough.
Ordering that very model, to replace the void of the Ragley Big AL, purchased in May 2020, from Chain Reaction Cycles. Stolen in June 2020, from the porch. Using a Baron S1 front rim with 29x2.6 Butcher Grid tire, SixC 35 bar, Wellgo platform pedals(call'em cheap, but I find'em very reliable). And a couple Victagen headlights since night trail riding is my domain.

I think for people who had the bike and is wanting to upgrade to a scout again, the frame price shock will come to a surprise. From $449 to $699 is so much money. I’m so glad you’re reviewing it since now I actually have to consider the price instead of the scout being a go to budget frame.
10 years ago you could buy a nice Al hardtail frame for 100. I am sure that bike frames have better geo and handling now, but they are almost unaffordable. I bought a high end full sus frame for 1100.
I built a 21' scout 290 earlier this year. Very happy I got the frame for $350 off of chain reaction. Hard tails are supposed to be cheap.

Actually I was looking at the geometry of the 27.5" version of the bike and thinking I could mullet that one. Choosing fork correctly that would probably ride fine and have just a bit higher BB height. Plus size tires work great on hardtails, usually :)

Review spot on. i have this bike and a ragley mmbop. The nukeproof is slightly stiffer than my ragley mmmbop. still love both bikes.i take my nukeproof on a day trip ride and the mmbop just to blast around in.

@@joeevans266 I can ride both all day long. My mmmbop is a mullet. 29er up front to absorb all the bumps. Mmmbop frame is cheaper. The money you save on the frame can be used to upgrade other components. Mmmbop looks more aggressive.
It's between this and the Ragley Big al.. Tough decision!
I really like the way you explain what different geo actually does to the behavior of the bike. Learning a lot!
Having ridden both the current Big Al and the mk2 Scout 29, I would take the Ragley any day of the week. Better Geo, more compliant and comfortable, and better value for money in my opinion.
I haven't ridden the new mk3 Scout yet, but it it hasn't changed all that much from the previous generation so I would still go for the Ragley.

@@madcapper6 I couldn't say with certainty, but I'm pretty sure the marley and big al share the same geo, so I would imagine they are very very similar aside from wheel size
@@hankpog3907 Agreed, I've had a Big Al for over a year now and it's very capable and comfortable. I've been on plenty of step and chunky stuff with it and I'm always smiling. I haven't ridden the Scout yet but I'll take compliance over stiffness any day. Not to mention the fun factor.
Scout Gen 2 owner here - your review is spot on! One comment about the slack seat tube - it makes longer, mellower, marathon-style rides so much more tolerable. In Austria there are a lot of long stretches of gently elevating "schotter" tracks (you would probably call them fireroads) which you climb for an hour to gain 500-1000m of elevation. In other words, the Scout is not bad at being a gravel bike... Then once you get to the top, it gets down the much steeper DH tracks OK as well.
I put an XC-style long nose saddle on it so I have no problems climbing steep stuff either. I think given the target audience and being a jack of all trades a slacker seat tube makes a lot of sense on this bike.
What year is considered a Gen 2?
@@richarde1355 I believe it was in 2015 when v1 appeared, in 2018 v2, and this year v3. If you search for "Nukeproof Scout XXXX" where XXXX is the year, you will find some reviews on various websites....
I also have the V2 2021 model. My son is on a XC team and I “help” with coaching using my scout. It’s noticeably not as efficient peddling but could be my set up. However, I do feel that when the trail gets steep, technical and fast, the frame really smooths out. I don’t have the $ to compare vast models so other frames could be better/worse.
@@kleib7715 die tritt effezients bei tiefem trettlager hängt mit der reifenwahl zusammen. das gleiche haben andere hersteller mit ähnlicher geo. letztendlich bleibt es ein hardtail, die "über bereifung" in richtung enduro und zu gunsten der abfahrten verleiden einem jede uphill fähigkeit.
Thanks for the review! I’ve been seriously thinking about this bike too (I have a Roscoe on order) thanks for comparing the two. The Roscoe had “drag” and felt lethargic, this one was a little peppy. It’s a tough choice for me.

Think the tyres fitted added to the drag he referenced on the Roscoe. He also mentioned the 2.6" smoothed out the down. He scored the Roscoe high for enjoyment btw. I have a 9 on order and this bike doesn't come close to a change of mind. People won't champion the Roscoe as some don't consider it elite or that the name doesn't carry the same gravitas as some brands but I believe for the money the new Roscoe looks a killa ride.

I was in the same boat 6 months ago. I was going to get the roscoe 7 but they were OOS until august. I went with a Nukeproof and haven’t regretted it at all. I agree it’s got plenty of pep. I think it’s more geared for jumps and climbing than it is for outright speed but it’s plenty quick for the riding I do. I did a race with it on 27.5 wheels and it does not keep up with XC bikes. The 29 might be okay but could be heavier than a carbon bike. If you have trouble deciding just keep in mind the Nukeproof is free returns in a year or trek in 30 days.
@@hogsrmylifetbj Thanks for your input. I have an XL Roscoe on order, but mine should be in next week. The XXL Scout has very similar geometry. I do hate pedal strikes, so the low BB of the scout has me a little worried, but I like the shorter seat tube. I may just support the local trek store and stick with the Roscoe. Apparently people who ordered the 7 were upgraded to the 8 (online forums sometimes lie tho), I don’t know why they didn’t upgrade me. I feel trek let me down there. Other companies were doing a lot better of a job keeping their customers happy. I heard good things about Trek, so I thought I would give them a shot. But my first impression isn’t a good one

Just came back to this one after watching Blake Samson shred his Scout at Whistler. There's something about that screaming yellow frame that just makes me want one of these as an all purpose fun bike as an alternative to my Oiz TR.
Blake is a shredder. He could ride a shopping car and make it look good
Signle trak, when its a single track, gives a sense of speed that cant be felt on Flat sections with wide turns. Its like touge driving.
Hope you get experimental with the 27.5 frame!
Did you ever think about reviewing electric hardtails? I never found one with modern geometry, but maybe there are some.
i don't have any plans to review ebikes. They're not allowed on the singletrack where I live, and they're not very appealing to me. I've ridden a few, but they're just not my jam.

Yes, I've definitely heard of the bardono 3. Their bikes look very interesting on paper. I've reached out to them several times but haven't been able to get one in for review

Blake Sampson of GMBN describes his Scout 275 in much the same way: a do-anything, go-anywhere bike. He even rode Mega Avalanche on his! Great to see this basic assessment confirmed in comparison to so many other hardtails.

Hey, looking at this as a winter hardtail for the UK. Its the colour that got me. Would you go 29 or 27.5? Shame they don't do a 297 version like the mega/giga. Also you like in an amazing place. I would love to head over and ride those trails one day (famous 'one day' saying). Have I seen you do a video on the V2 SC Bronson in pink (the rat boy signature frame)?

I had to look up the BB height, 307mm. And given the sag on the 140mm fork on this thing, I can see why you had so many pedal strikes. That's a very low BB.
Speaking of Brit bikes. The guys in On One / Planet X have a crazy sale on the hello Dave frame. Especially in white (which I bought a month ago at $470 shipped to NY ) it’s now (in white) $231 frame $358 shipped to USA. Ughh I bought it too early it seems. It’s heavy as heck with a long CS. So manuals are tougher but it tracks well and actually climbs well (63 Ht 67 ST)
For a budget build it’s not bad.
They should send you one to review as a “type of budget build “

Im looking at the 275 Scout in Small as im 5'6 as a beginner would that be the correct size?
I decided to order up one of these to compliment my Canyon Strive CFR enduro rig. Specifically to mix it up on some of the less aggressive flow and jump trails or some slower single track where the Strive just feels like it is overkill. Picked up a new 2023 Scout RS model on sale for $1999, which seems like a great deal for GX drivetrain, 150mm Lyrik Select + and DT Swiss XM 1700 wheels. Kind of meh on the guide RE brakes, but they will do okay I think. It will be nice to have a hardtail again, have not had one for a couple years.
What model of NP Scout I should to buy, 275 or 290? I am 190cm of height and I need XL frame, so… What am I need as my first true-trail bike after grandpa-bike GT avalanche 9r (29inch)…?
You had lot of pedal strikes even with 165 cranks? They sell complete bikes with 170mm crankset :o
I really like on that bike a size of head tube, it is massive!

Yes he has common sense. I would not even walk that trail.

It's different when you're by yourself, but as soon as you add any significant other, you start to think about stuff like that a lot more. I'm married and don't have kids yet, but I've already started dialing back what I'm willing to ride.
Agree 100%, gotta know when to send it when you have a fam relying on you.
Love the swiss army knife example, totally agree. I own this bike because I have lots of other hobbies and its easy and reliable when I decide to hit the trails.
Hey what would you choose between the Santa Cruz chameleon or the Nukeproof scout?
Can you revisit the Meta HT AM since they updated the new frame? Would be interested to hear your take maybe the Race level of components seems to compete on best value for stock components SLX and Fox 36.
If they want to send one in for review, I'll review it. There are so many amazing hardtaila out there these days, but a lot of people are stuck on canyon, nukeproof, and comnencal and don't look beyond them.

How does this compare to the fuse you tested?
I picked the v3 290 up to try after this vid. I just find it a bit bland tbh ride feel wise. I would stick with the 27.5 on the Scout. Way more fun on any trail. Thanks for the review. Let us know how you get on with the 27.5.
I agree, something was just a little uninspiring/vanilla with this model.
Okay I own a Norco storm 9.2 bought it brand new and like most beginners. I crashed tires kept deflating at the stem. I gave up! Been hanging in the shed for years now. Fyi bought the bike before I had a son. I have one now and he is 7. So I busted out the old MTB. So my question is. Do I sell and buy new nuke proof or up grade components. Like I have a 3 x 8 and I can get a one by.
When I was choosing my first bike, it was between this (mk2) and the Ragley Big Al. I went with the Ragley largely based on your review. Looking at this review, I feel I made the right decision. Scout still looks like an amazing bike, though.
I feel your comment re: the white line. I'm still no where near good enough to ride that but I wouldn't even consider it if I were.
I just built up a Big Al a couple of months ago, and I def think it is the better bike. you made the right call! And they're less expensive than the NP.
Yeah, I also pulled the trigger on a Big Al frame based on Steve's review and love the bike. I mounted a 140 fork and liked it, then I put on a 150 and love it. I'm 5'10" though, so my saddle is way higher than Steve's.
@@iwantmyu2b I'm 6' on a large Big Al with a 150. It's amazing. I live in the PNW and the big eats anything.

Hi Steve, really dig this review. I bought the g2 290 Scout last year (it was very hard to get a bike full stop mid Covid here in Oz) and I'm pretty much a noob. The bike does everything you say and I greatly enjoy it on the many different tracks around here. Get it on the pump track, jumps (little ones) and flying down flow trails. It does hammer me a fair bit a times, that is a downside (it came with 2.6/2.5" tyres, I might look at some cushcore stuff). And pedal strokes a plenty. Perfect vehicle for learning the skills and I keep improving on a weekly basis. In short I feel this review is spot on, cheers.
How can I find the different generation years of the Scout?
Hi, I like your review. But i come here bcoz I try to find good alternative for my Dartmoor Hornet size L (Im 1.80m tall) and I start jumping, drops, racing and try progressive in mtb. For me Dartmoor Hornet 2021 is too heavy (16-17kg), too long (stack 625, reach 460 and ST 440) but I like feel like on motorcycle stiff/stable. I cant do manual bcoz of high impact to my back, bunnyhopping is possible on 1.5liter water bottle.
My skill stop and after change stem to short (45mm to 31mm) I can jump better but not comfortable. I want change only frame and fork.
Before I look at Nukeproof Scout i was ready to buy Commencal Meta HT or Orange P7 (or change frame of hornet to M)

I've tried to get a vitus for a while, but no luck. Great value for the money, but the geo is pretty dated now.
I just got a Scout on liquidation for 50% off and I’m loving it! I’m coming from a Kona hardtail and man, this thing just rips in comparison. The large frame fits me perfectly and I can jump, corner, climb and pedal more easily on then Scout and it’s just more fun. Still love my Kona, but this thing is a blast.
I've been eyeing the Kona Mahuna as it's currently 50% off ($599). But I've found the Scout 290 (29er) for $799 and free shipping. Making me rethink but my budget would be way more than maxed out for the scout.
@@tsanders23 that's a killer deal on the Mahuna. The frame rides great on the trail and it comes with an air fork. It has longer reach than the Scout and the head tube is not as slack, but it flows really well on the single trail. Not designed for the fastest downhills, but if you're just getting your feet wet on MTB it's a great bike to start out with.
@@IWASRANSOMED that's kind of what I was hoping to hear. Now to decide between the Kona Mahuna for $715 shipped and the Canyon Grand Canyon 5 for $550 shipped. Really leaning to the Canyon as I like the color better. 5he Mahuna is a less desirable plum color.
You might be able to check out the Kona at a shop in your area. They sell through shops as well as direct to consumer so you can save on shipping that way. I've heard good things about the Grand Canyon but never ridden it myself. If you go for the cheaper option just make sure brakes, hubs and wheels are decent. If you really end up getting into MTB, you'll outgrow your wheel set quick.
