The story Numan has about this is wonderful. Gary was going through a creative slump and nothing was working for him from the late eighties to mid nineties He ended up watching the Woodstock 94 show, then listened to The Downward Spiral and was inspired once again. At the time he said that Trent Reznor had taken what he had blueprinted out and perfected it and took it to places he never dared to dream of going. A few years later he found out that Reznor was listening to Telekon every morning during The Downward Spiral's production. They even ended up neighbours for quite a while sometime after this gig. The master inspired the student, who went on to re-inspire the master.
Gary comes out like he means business. Trademark pursed lips, salutes the adoring crowd and launches into it. A genuine ahead-of-his-time innovator and he knows it. Great performance.
In his autobiography he talks about important this moment was to him and how it changed his perspective on his music. And how extremely nervous he was!!
Numan is blessed with one of the most immediately characterful voices perfectly suited to the forms of music he chooses to create. A rare and true gift.
Yes, well said. He's got a great voice, and although technically there are plenty of 'better' singers in the world, the way his voice melds with the timbre and harmonies of the synths he uses is absolutely incredible. Even here, where there's more NIN influence in the sound, he's absolutely killing it.
Can you imagine what is going through Gary's mind when he walks on-stage? He's a deeply emotional man. It must have been one of those life affirming moments.
You watch the other video of the song Cars, and about ten seconds in when the crowd pop, there is such a Cheshire cat smile it's impossible to not think that.
Stephen Holton Trent has been my favourite musician for the past 20 years but only within the past weeks did I discover Newman. Listening to him a whole lot.

@@TimothyChase You were in for a *TREAT*, hope you enjoyed it. Been a fan since Telekon in 1980 (I was 15 and still in the early stages of developing my own musical tastes independent of my older siblings). I listened to that album (vinyl of course ;-)) soooooo much.
@ Definitely! I have a bunch of pictures from the concert that my home laptop rotates through as wallpapers. He has quite a few albums behind him, I keep finding that he's produced more stuff with others, and his more recent work is what I seem to enjoy the most.
Dunno if anyone else said this.. But Rob Sheridan does a great job of filming this. He's an awesome photographer! Also, this is one of the best things ever.
One thing I've always loved about Numan is that his music is SO supportable by other instrumentalists- piano, drums, bass guitar all have their place. He's thought of as an electronic/synth artist but his music transcends that. You can even love Numan on a cello or ukelele. Not so the rest. Not Kraftwerk, Human League etc etc etc. He's universal without trying to be.
I didn't realize Trent was so strongly inspired by Gary. I mean, look at the performance-the posture, the moves. Sometimes it's like watching twins. Awesome.
god DAMN what a GREAT band. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Love EVERYTHING here. -Overly distorted acoustic guitar... -A drummer who actually hits! -POLYMOOG!! -Reznor’s arrangement of adding the finale from “M.E.” ! -Reznor’s signature piano embellishments!
And a Guitar player from Guns and Roses... .. NIN and Numan are real legends ahead of his own era... This is not industrial This is not Rock This is not eletrónic This is not techno This is not clássic. But a original rework from Both styles....
When Gary Numan came to San Antonio, I showed up a friend’s house because we were taking the same car to the show. My friend said, “Only you would wear a western snap-shirt to a Gary Numan show. I always wear western snap-shirts. When Gary Numan came out, he wore a cool, western-themed shirt with a steer’s skull on the back. Very cool. Androids have been known to adapt to the environment!
My sister stole blue jean snap jacket, but I stole it originally from my other sister. Matter of fact my sister stole a different jean jacket not my pearl snap. I like jean jackets and pearl snaps are nice too. You sound like a good time. What are you going to eat a snack tonight?
First I discovered NIN. Then recently I discovered Gary Numan. Then with this video, my mind was blown knowing that my favorite artist Trent Reznor was/is inspired by Gary Numan.
And vice versa. “When I heard Nine Inch Nails in 1994, it was as if they were realizing the potential of whatever tiny ideas I originally had, except Reznor seemed to take these ideas so much further, sculpting them into a huge, professional sounding onslaught. This was the grown-up version to my naive experimentalism.” - Numan, Electronic Beats magazine, winter 2012
+UpTheShakers It's actualy a switch to the ending melody from M.E. from the same Pleasure Principle album as Metal. I can see how you thought it might be INMAH as the melody fits in there too. But it is M.E. Sorry :(
3:52 on such beautiful music by real musicians in their zone owning it just love this performance numan and nin are amazing together these guys love their music you are witness to masters at work
Followed numan since the late 70's and I'll never be bored of his music an inspiration to so many people and bands over the years, liking the new intuder album also I hope he continues to make great music for years to come
I remember having seen some of the setlists before the one in London, moaning about them covering Metal at a lot of the shows. It would the final chance I would get to see NIN, so why would I want to hear someone else's song. A lot different though when Gary Numan was there though. This was possibly the greatest gig I have ever been to.
Thank you for posting these vids with Gary Numan! I love both NIN and Numan on their own merits but together they're incomparable. Makes me happy every time I watch 🎸
Just saw Gary again at the Glasshouse in Pomona a few days ago. Last I saw him here was in 2016 when my oldest daughter bought us tickets. She knows I'm a HUGE Numan fan from my JrHS years. He was FANTASTIC like always! Can't wait til he returns to CA.
I was lucky enough to see him in 2022 in a hall that held maybe 800 people (very atypical for the rest of the places that he played this year.) Still puts on an amazing show.
Absolutely out of this world Gary Numan which i followed his music from the 70s and NIN which i followed in the early 90s collaberating in this gem of a song
I just liked the whole of Pleasure Principle which I bought on cassette at the time. Sadly I don't think I've ever owned a paid-for version of Are Friends Electric, which started it all for me (on radio).
I knew Numan was more than a one hit wonder ( Cars) when he performed on SNL (70s)and did "Praying to the Aliens" (for second song) there was a true buzz and excitement in the air.
Gary has inspired some of my favourite bands as well as being a fantastic musician himself. Obviously Trent has been massively influenced but so has the likes of Marilyn Manson, Godflesh, Ministry, Mnemic, Static-x, Skinny Puppy, Psyklon Nine and many other Industrial band which I love. That Metal tinged sound with Goth and Electro mixed in is just hypnotic, even better live.
Always been a huge Bowie and Numan fan and no one got close until I heard NIN. Great to see NIN and Numan - there's so much numb music out there. Wish I was at the concert.
Got the chance a few years ago to see Gary numan and NiN on Halloween. By far Gary stole the show....not an easy thing given NiNs amazing stage pressence.
i met Gary Numan in London 2 years ago, i asked him if he would like a coffee, he said yes, we talked for two hours, he is a very nice man.
Interesting
Lovely :)
Lucky you...I suppose?
I believe that...youre a fellow tripper ....just weed for me
OMG 😱

big guy Universe in action bud💯💯💯💯
So fckn cool 🤘🏻
Yes, I read where Gary found a 2nd wind when listening to NIN. I notice how heavily Beck is influenced by Gary too. Love them all
Who's TDS?
Kinda like Les Claypool & Geddy Lee
Numan is a legend. Way ahead of his time.
Col Master he certainly was.
Numan and Reznor are both Electronic Music visionaries!
Let's go City!
Hell Yea he is😃😃😃
He created a genre. Not many people can say that.
Gary comes out like he means business. Trademark pursed lips, salutes the adoring crowd and launches into it. A genuine ahead-of-his-time innovator and he knows it. Great performance.
Man, what a great comment. Nailed it! ⚡

so true, he voice has flux like a synth, yet a beautiful, natural tone...
AB-SO-LUTELY! Gary's voice is so iconic.

And a darn good display pilot too!
The most beautiful thing is that they both ultimately influenced each other!
These two need to hook up and write an album together.
I 2nd that!
why they have to fuck first? just make the album, I say

Gary Numan has just won the "ICON" award at the silver cleff awards. Well deserved. Gary Numan is a musical genius!
This never gets old! Perhaps best concert footage ever?
I love the song and I love the performance, but even from 'just a production value' it is the best I've ever seen.
Gary Numan and NIN? WOW!! I've been a fan of Numan from his beginning and NIN for the last 20 some years.
Stephen Holton Trent has been my favourite musician for the past 20 years but only within the past weeks did I discover Newman. Listening to him a whole lot.

How cool is this performance?!!?....
Very very cool..😎
too cool
Hetero Man Crush Monday.....Reznor and Numan
Cool as f**k
way too cool for todays idiot mainstream audience. I mean this is as cool as it gets and people are listening to country rap instead.
I'd literally die if this happened to me at a NIN concert. Seeing two of my favorite of all time artists and songwriters.
I hope they tour together. That would fantastic on so many levels
God's mercy to the 79 people whom felt this was worth a 'thumbs-down'. Peace be with you.
hilarious! thanks for the grin and laugh. may God spare their souls from eternal damnation...
Lost souls
I award them no points and may God have mercy on their souls.
F. that was amazing
I just assume they have bad motor skills and actually meant to click the thumbs up button, it's impossible not to like this
This was FUCKING INCREDIBLE live. One of the best NIN gigs I ever went to.
I can't believe I just found this! This is amazing.

I love Gary Numan since his first album and to see him onstage with NIN is just awesome. Musical heaven. I still own the 45 of Cars on vinyl.
Wait, Gary Numan is the Cars?! 😳 OMG this fact is life-changing and I feel like an asshole for not knowing that.

No distracting edits, effects or annoying silliness.
Just good filmmaking 🙏🏽
We are there!!
Killer audio too 🖤
Best live performance ever done... period.
It's alright. The production of the video is slicker than the performance tbh. NIN always have insane production like this.

So much to like here. Getting Numan back, the break at 2:38, the crowd hand clapping and the swirling sizzling sound of a Polymoog. Epic!
These two should have done albums together in the 90s. Numan fits right in with the band.
NIN thanks for putting Gary Neman back on stage aagain.
I think Gary Numan was great on this tune! Very charismatic.
Vasudevan Panicker he should be since it’s originally his song.
His choice sounds great too
Trent and Gary are probably the two most creative and intellectual musicians to ever exist
I saw Numan live with ministry a while ago, what a great show from both
Such a fantastic song! The drums on this track are pretty amazing too!
This is outstanding.
At 4:11 the song switches from Metal to an instrumental from the Replicas album called I Nearly Married a Human
+UpTheShakers It's actualy a switch to the ending melody from M.E. from the same Pleasure Principle album as Metal. I can see how you thought it might be INMAH as the melody fits in there too. But it is M.E. Sorry :(
I always thought Trent just added that in his version as his own thing. Never knew it came from Numan on the original album. Thanks for the info!
Whoa. Thanks!
Gary Numan is one of the most original artist, his lyrics is never trivial.
I will never get bored of telling people I was at this gig :)
NIN's steely music descends into pathos with Numans synthesizer at 4.10
Amazing... best live recording ever! Such energy!
Gary is such a rock star.
The videography is amazing
Dang. His voice still makes some of my clothing damp
Like your socks?🥺
🤣🤣🤣 moist definitely
Lol same
Relatable

Great camera work really feel like you're on stage with the band fantastic ☺
both ahead of their time on same stage...WOW.. wish i was here
Love Gary and Trent and I love that Trent acknowledges his inspiration. So many artists these days don't do that. One of my fave Numan songs.

Listening to this through my subwoofer in my 99 civic. I missed out on so many great performances as a child. We need a reunion show
Awesome, 2 Gods of Rock on 1 stage. Wish I had been there.
