If anyone's really worried about stolen gear, consider putting 2 air tags in the case. 1 in a semi obvious place and 1 really tucked away. That way the thief will likely find the first one then stop looking. I've never had the opportunity to really test if this works but in theory it could really save your ass
It's a good idea. I've also thought about the option of having something like that built into the electronics cavity in the back of the bass. Kind of super hidden, but also accessible to change the battery if you know where to look.
@@janekgwizdalapodcast8028 that's a fantastic idea! Might have to try that myself and see if one will fit in there
@@janekgwizdalapodcast8028 If your bass is well shielded, then the air tag functionality inside the electronics cavity will literally not be able to work lol. That's why nobody has done it yet
Except that if the thief has an Iphone, they'll be alerted there's a airtag that's not theirs.
Had 30k of film gear stolen in LA had the air tags location...police showed up but would not go confront the people in the house
Had the same exact experience with the Kapsule. Zippers also separated from the soft side, wheels pin broke two times. I must say I got over almost a 50+ flights with it, which was more than I expected. It was still under warranty, so they gave me store credit, which was cool. Now I got the big waterproof SKB case and I'm happy. It fits my Fender bass very nicely. I also Airtag all my cases, thats the greatest thing ever! Enki cases are great too, but I like to travel with just one bass.
Hey Janek, thanks for signing my Hanon at Birdland! It has a special spot... wide open on my practice stand ;), I really appreciate it and the bit we got to talk after the gig. Anyways, thanks for the brilliant show!
Caught the show at The Falcon, fantastic, all virtuosos, Manuel was amazing,Steve is a great drummer, and one of my favorite bass players thrown in for good measure.I was hearing Keith Jarret, Chick,Buddy Rich,Pat Metheny through the night's set. Thanks for the work, well done.
Thanks for the video Janek. Earlier in the year I toured Japan and BA managed to leave my Bass In London. Thankfully Japanese Airlines got it to me during soundcheck in Osaka. Definitely getting some of those Air Tags..
Great episode. Perfect length of time for my 10km run today. Realised I really need to upgrade my gig bag… all my gigs are local drive-to so I just take a softcase but it’s a big risk. Gonna check out skb.
Missed the show at the Rochester Jazz Fest! Ugh... Hope you had a good experience there.
I’m considering getting a double gig bag, but I’m concerned it would reduce the chances I can take it on the plane versus a single gig bag.
The second you started telling the story about being forced to buy a seat for your bass in Japan, my brain guessed ANA domestic flight. Japanese domestic flights can be configured on a 747 with up to 660 seats, because Japanese people are on average shorter, and it makes the flight more efficient. Max config for international flights is usually 524 passengers. So, those policies exist because otherwise an additional 138 people could potentially show up with carryon luggage.
Did you mention the bass bag that fits in the SKB case maybe a photo of your stuff in the case....thanks (why don't these companies listen to you)
I thought it's best to give the instrument at the plane for the storage if it's not a super cheap flight, which don't know how to handle anything anyway. You can then pick it up at the plane also, something they do for fragile things.
Hey Janek! Huge fan. I got a full ride to Berklee and I'm leaving in 2 weeks. I'm super excited, I recently found out that Fernando Huergo was your teacher at Berklee. I got my scholarship through a Global Berklee program and I got to spend about a week learning from Fernando and he was absolutely wonderful and extremely insightful. It's awesome to know that I'll be studying at a place where one of my favorite musicians let alone bass players also studied at.
This comment is long winded, my apologies, but my question to you is if you think the SKB Bass Safe will fit a dual bass gig bag. I'm bringing two basses with me and I'm trying to find the most efficient way to bring them with me. Thanks a lot in advance, I'm a massive fan and I love what you do!
So did I miss the part about the strap? I didn’t see you explain why and how to use the Velcro strap.
Always great to hear a real world case + travel logistics rundown! Have you seen the updates to the Gruv Kapsule case? It looks like theyve included a stronger top handle for the bass cases and potential stronger zippers?? I'm shopping cases and agree, I want it to be the best case in the world, but its a bit discouraging to hear that quality isn't 100%. Also have you heard of/tried the new Mono vertigo Ultra? It's got wheels similar to the Gruv, but looks like it doesn't have the hardshell protection that the Gruv has.
What the hole in the top arm of the bass body???
I definitely agree that you should never tour with equipment that is irreplaceable, especially if you are flying with it. A touring professional has very different concerns about gear than the average musician gigging around town. Building your career around unusual instruments is a high risk endeavor. Be the kind of pro who can rent a decent Fender anywhere around the world and get the gig done, if that's necessary. The show must go on.
I have my original bass safe with the old, clasp style latches as well as the newer strap style. I much prefer the older clasp style but the case is so beat up, the threaded inserts for the wheels are all stripped out
I only started wondering about this, but, you tour(ed) a lot and talked about gigging with one particular bass. That's fine and all, but don't you need a spare ? I understand for flying, but for regular gigs, I get so worried about everything that I need this mental safety net. Also comes from a time I was playing a Squier bass and often breaking strings
I've never carried a spare instrument for my own music, and the only gigs I've carried more than one instrument on were huge pop gigs where I had a bass tech, and a crew of people schlepping the gear every day. I actually needed several instruments in order to play the music, including an upright bass at one point for several tours. I have never broken a string in my nearly 30 year career, so a spare bass has never been necessary. If I was playing very heavy music with a pick I could see that changing perhaps, but so far the string streak is alive and well.
The main reason I don't like the idea of checking my bass is it getting delayed to the point I won't have it at the gig. I know the chances are probably slim, but as a lefty 6 string bass player I can't really afford to take the risk. If it doesn't show in time I can't just borrow someone else's or buy a cheap replacement at the local store.
I like the idea of gate checking it, that way you don't have to worry about it getting lost, stolen, delayed etc or have to fight to get it in the cabin. Seems to be the best of both. Have you ever tried that yourself?
I totally hear you on the lefty situation. I'm going to make sure I include some notes about that for my video on the main channel next week.
I'm definitely able to give less fucks about my bass showing up as it's so much easier to replace a right handed instrument at the last minute.
The biggest issue with gate checking the bass is that you are committed to a soft case/gig bag at that point. You then get into a pretty grey area of how much you really trust the baggage handlers to take care of the instrument. Checking it means it's packed the way you're comfortable packing it to guard against being in the hold of the plane. And even if you do gate check it and the baggage handlers take care of it, there's not always a guarantee you're going to get it back plane-side when you land. It will often end up being sent to the carousel with all the other bags which can be hazardous.
Basically, there's no perfect way to do it, and we all have a slightly different set of requirements and risk tolerance.
@@janekgwizdalapodcast8028 I should've been more clear, I meant gate checking it with the bass safe still, so there's less risk involved all round. I didn't realise that they often send it to the carousel anyway though, that sucks.
@@craigsi16 There's no way you'll get something like the bass safe past both checkin and security. It's way too bulky. Even some of the more modern gig bags that have a bunch of pockets on them get turned away by checkin agents and security/TSA. if you're going to the gate, it's a gig bag and only a gig bag.
@@janekgwizdalapodcast8028 ah ok. I wonder then if the capsule would be allowed since its still kind of a soft case? Maybe I just need to suck it up and just check the thing 😂 I've never taken an instrument on a plane before but I know I'll have to at some point so I guess I'm just being too anxious about it. What I was saying before about being a lefty and not having a replacement option makes it scary though!
The couple of dead pixels are driving me nuts 🙈🙈🙈🙈, but the best info as always!!!!!🙌🙌🙌
Likewise... I think it's finally time to retire this setup and bite the bullet on buying something a little more modern... 💸
This week's lighting is a bit weird. You have "dead eyes" or "racoon eyes" aka. there is no light hiting your eyesockets. 😅
