Watched the whole interview (in two segments) really enjoyed it. Great you got to play with Peter. He's a great story teller. I am a little sad because I've watched many interviews of his but Peter is never asked about his time playing with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, George Cables, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson in the west coast. We never get to hear about that unfortunately. Maybe interviewers are not aware of that really interesting period in Peter's history as opposed to his Steps Ahead, Abercrombie etc etc period.

To me 6/64 or even 8/64 at the 12 fret has been a standard setup from the beginning and when I try some basses with paper thin action it always feels horrible. How can anyone play dinamically with such a setup?

Relief can't be 0.12", it's gotta be 0.012".

I would think a drummer that has so meany drum licks in his head he would be fast talker. Very quick to rattle off thoughts. HA HA

Time and sound. Someone may find this approach of interest… In my drum room I don’t use close mics for recording. I use two sets of overheads for which I use AI gating, one pair for the cymbals and one pair for toms, snare and kick. I use one kick mic 3 feet from the kick and one snare mic over my head. Both these mics also work with AI gating. I don’t worry about phase cancellation, because none of the mics are near each other. To keep the stereo image of the drums true and balanced, the kick and snare are physically placed in line with each other with the use of an offset kick pedal. I use a 24 x 24 kick drum and a 12 x 5 snare drum. This keeps the volume, pitch and tone balanced. When I mention AI gating, I mean plug-ins like the Oxford drum gate and so on, I might also use my API plug-in for gating. This whole set up took me a couple years to figure out and of course, it was expensive.

I love this interview, I listen to it when I want to feel dark and depressed about life and music. More and more, I find JoJo to be a brilliant musician, I would just point out, for all his realistic point of views concerning jazz and its demise, he is still using the six stroke roll, paradiddles, singles, doubles, flams and roughs. This physical act of playing the drums, in my view, will pretty much remain the same, with all of the same technical challenges now almost 100 years old.

Where do you get these exercises, I’d love to buy a book that I can practice from.

Jungle and Drum and Bass are English music styles invented in the beginning of the 1990ties mostly by Jamaicans if you ask me. So no wonder Nerve gets a better response in London.

I'm a function band player, and I do understand why people at my level are reluctant to spend the money for a Noble, but, gigging 3 or 4 nights a week, 4 hours a gig, I want to enjoy what I'm hearing, and the Noble is a game changer for me. My IEMs sound so good, my bass sounds how I want and expect when I play. Every gig my bass sound makes me smile, even bad gigs can be good, I just focus on my playing and tone. My job would be a lot less enjoyable without the Noble, so it's worth every penny.

Is that a warwick in the back on the wall?

Watches have been dear to me for a long time, a Seiko Willard Reissue I bought myself before getting married saw me through my wedding day, moving into our first home, timing the contractions of my wife when she went into labor for our first girl, the first home that we bought together, and I'm sure many many more memories in the future. It's not just about telling the time, but having a talisman that has seen you through the pivotal and mundane points of your life, and can do the same for the person who owns it next. I appreciate your collection as it gives me an insight into the type of person you are. I myself gravitate to mostly divers and GMT complications. Thanks for your content, it truly feels like you're giving a part of yourself away and I feel your community really appreciates and admires that.

Fully agree with what he says about Jazz those days. I'm especially tired of universities, most of them over-emphasizing copying the old greats, and even discouraging to bring in new elements. Such places are where Jazz really dies. Unless we manage to fight those conservative elements and encourage students to find a passionate and courageous approach to music, unlimited from genre barriers.

54 yo and discover circle of fourths/fitfhs not a long time ago, from guys like Rick Beato and Scott Devine and a lot more, thank you for sharing all the real stuff from all of your experience, and only now discovering the benefits of this harmony understanding, take a long time to integrate but really help to be a better musician but for me most important to be a better human, peace

Thank you so much for this video. I've been looking for a real world and In depth review of the Kapsule. I have been contemplating purchasing one but have always felt that there are "red flags" about its construction materials and design. I've seen many videos of people praising the look and design, but this video is the first that I've seen, truly documenting real world usage, with expert opinion. I have a system that I use for luggage checking my Bass, and it's been serving me well for several years. I use a modified Bass Safe by SKB, (original version with the side latches), and I use the Reunion Blues Aero, inside of that. It is, (in my opinion), one of the best and safest ways to check a guitar. It also has the added benefits of easy transport, and a sturdy gig bag once you get to your destination, so that you don't have to lug around the hard case everywhere. Interestingly enough, I once saw a Yamaha tech on a forum post John Pattitucci's specs, and saved them... They work well for me. Here's comparison for who might be interested. John Pattitucci*: Action: B @ 17th Fret: 0.09375 - 3/32", G @ 17th Fret: 0.078125 - 5/64" Relief: B @ 9th fret: 0.023 - 15/64", G @ 9th fret: 0.018 - 6/32" Method: The relief was set using a capo at the first fret and fretting the last fret. Janek: Action: 8/64" to 7/64" @ 12th Fret Relief: 0.12" (1/8") @ 7th fret Comparing the figures does make me think maybe you mean 0.012" for your relief? Depending how straight you keep your neck I suppose. *Given John's Yamaha's are 6s, I feel like the tech made a mistake when he said G, and actually meant C string.

I thought it's best to give the instrument at the plane for the storage if it's not a super cheap flight, which don't know how to handle anything anyway. You can then pick it up at the plane also, something they do for fragile things.

I could listen to Peter play forever but I could listen to talk that long too. He’s just such a gift not only to the drumming world, but the music world as a whole. I can’t remember a time in my life as a drummer, even when I was in elementary school, when I didn’t know who he was. My first drum teacher turned me onto him by giving me a copy of Modern Drummer with him on the cover. It opened a lot of doors for me and still does. Thank you Janek and Thank you Peter!!!!

Hey Janek, I recently got interested in trying out a high C 5 string. Would I have to/do you recommend getting a new nut?

So now I know that string height can't limit your speed cause you play super clean, previse and with desired speed with action which is higher than mine. So I guess the answer for me (surprise, surprise!) Is to practice more instead blame setup, strings, bass, amp or anything else lol what interesting is the string spacing. I never played bass with so narrow space. My basses are all 19mm standard string spacing and sometimes think that a little bit narrower string spacing will suit my preference more but maybe it's my weird feeling or another excuse lol

Dear Janek, I know this is your current preference, but I do prefer your sound in low string-action, AND, in your Fodera. You are a very virtuoso, highly technical, fast and finally, it´s dont affect your sound in nothing. I am only a fan, but is my opnion.
