  • With the announcement of Dr Diabolical's Cliffhanger at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, the conversation about the Six Flags investment strategy has been reignited. What if they started shifting over toward the Cedar Fair model? What would that look like for their parks? This video looks at the possibilities, as well as breaks down this new B&M dive coaster.

So SFFT is my home park, and while I was dreaming of some wild prototype... this is a pretty good fit for the park in a bunch of ways. First, it's nothing like any of the other rides in their lineup. Second, while 150 feet isn't considered THAT tall, it's about the height of the quarry wall, so riders will really feel like they're way up. Third, not only will capacity be decent and downtime minimal (it's B&M, and a model they've got down pat), it's line will be located on the way to Iron Rattler, and having another thrill coaster in that part of the park should help keep lines from getting out of control for either. Fourth, SFFT keeps their B&Ms in pretty good shape, even their B&M invert Goliath which survived New Orleans and Katrina, and I like having a strong relationship with the manufacturer maintained. And finally, putting in this coaster ensures Sea World San Antonio has to innovate for their next ride and can't scoop an Emperor clone for the park.

@@Alovon I think the closest one would be Schlitterbahn, but since it's a waterpark I'd rule it out. You're probably 45 minutes to an hour closer to SFFT than SFOT, and that's 15 minutes closer than SWSA. So... not the best spot.

I think the park you're missing is Six Flags Mexico. According to the SF Annual Report, it is in the largest metropolitan area of all Six Flags parks, plus the park itself is sort of a destination park (hence their investments over the last years). The park uses a permit to use the land (the permit will expire in 2024, but they'll probably renovate it), and since Aztlan will be opening real soon featuring great new attractions, such as the first flying theater in Latin America, they need to keep investing in that park. I could see a big B&M there rather than Great America, for example.

Jeffrey is playing the long game and what may seem like new additions every year, it's just pieces of a puzzle, to a bigger plan for the whole park. Everything he touches turns to gold. Jeffrey does amazing with the numbers at Fiesta Texas and attendance. He brought back so many wonderful shows and mardi gras parade, laser lights and projection screen immersive fireworks display, the best fright fest I've ever experienced and I could go on. Six Flags Over Georgia has a solid collection of B&M's (just went there yesterday) and a small-scale Dive Coaster like Dr. Diabolical would be pretty cool, fitting over where the falls ride was taken out. I would personally love to see a powerful launch coaster there, or maybe a Raptor, but a more expensive coaster that's a B&M could be cool. If they bring back Intamin, I'd love to get a blitz/accelerator type coaster. That would make Over Georgia's lineup even better! I believe that Six Flags will start working with B&M and other more expensive ride manufacturers again, but not as often as they did pre-bankruptcy. They might splurge for a B&M or a Intamin or a Mack for one park one year, and then wait a year or two to fill the coffers then splurge on another ride from them for another park.

IMHO, I think they could be moving it to a "Tick Tock" model yearly.
Some years they focus on giving some/one park a big ride.
Other years they give all parks smaller rides/clones.
The same amount of money spent overall per year (the money for putting a B&M Giga in one park could be used to put RMC Raptors or RMC all the woodies left in the chain pretty much).
While not overly sacrificing on the SF-Formula for support and importantly, price.
Cedar Fair more or less leaves most other parks without anything until they add a big thing to it, and even then they only add big things to their big parks.
SF's "Everyone is guaranteed something" model was one of the things that I feel put it chain-wise ahead of CF, as while the highs of the parks are lower versus CF's (It would take upending or building a brand new park-like a Six-Flags Austin or something to even have a shot of matching Cedar Point or King's Island).
So that's why I feel if they go on a alternating pattern between the "Everyone guaranteed" and "Focus Year" format per-year, it would likely be best.
One year they give SF-MM a B&M giga and the rest of the parks get nothing, then the next 2 years all parks get smaller stuff or clones (No clones of the big rides unless on the off chance during a big ride year or if the cost of making a clone is surprisingly low), then the year after that they pick a higher-ranking park to get a big ride again.
Although I will say, SFFT may be the outlier as it is their test park so they more or less may break the trend every now and then, getting a midde-class ride or a smaller prototype during a "Big Ride" year sometimes if the big-ride isn't going to their park already.

I like that idea but it’s just not a smart investment. For a company like six flags they will probably add big investment rides to their more popular parks in big areas to guarantee success. If they made a big investment in their small parks it just wouldn’t be smart since they might not make enough money to build another one. Yea the enthusiasts and the theme park junkies may like it but if they add a big ride to small park in a small area it just wouldn’t succeed (unless for some reason that park got a boost of popularity). when six flags starts making more money from these big investments then they would probably start adding big rides to their small parks.

Great Escape has benefited from this in the past and even though relocated received 5 coasters from 97-05 with a mix of family and thrill and on kiddie coaster. And when Astroland closed their SLC was sent to great Escape and then the 07 recession hit. Also before this time six flags brought in justice league and Loony Toons to the park. I think had the 07 recession not hit Great escape would be a low mid tier park.

Most of their other parks do, yet they constantly get stiffed on any new coasters.

I do not know why almost all UA-cam channels that are dedicated to theme parks, and roller coasters, complain about the "clones," and I say this because not all people can travel to visit other theme parks and can only go to their home park, so it's the only way that people can enjoy the attractions that are in other parks, and it is through the clones. It is good that all of you can visit other parks in the world, but others cannot do it.

I think at this point sfstl is going to lose more rides than gain. They lost 2, they still have log flumes and raging rivers which have to be on the short list and are all in separate areas, so they are not going to make space for anything of value. The last hopes I have is that they attempt to make it a woodie park to compete with silver dollar city and Dollywood. I think more realistically is that your watching a bottom tier park implode and prepare for a closing

    This is my prediction
let’s say they both have a budget of 65 million for the dry park expansions. Cedar fair gets a massive giga and a massive multi launch each for 30 and 25 mil. Then a 5 mil flat ride and 5 mil park improvements. Six flags instead will get 1 mini dive, a s&s custom launch, and a RMC raptor for 13 mil, 15 mil, and then 11 mil. Plus 7 flat rides by zamperla and s&s for like 3 mil each like they’ve been doing. That’s 60 mil so another 5 left for park improvements to parks that didn’t get anything. They can spend the same amount of money (six flags has more parks so even with cheaper tickets they can spend a similar amount) sf and cedar fair will still be super different, but it’s not like sf is just getting 10 3 mil flats and 5 6 mil free spins with 5 mil park improvements. That’s how sf used to spend that 65 mil
