  • 30C one day and torrential rain the next. Spring is here in QLD and the shadehouse is READY!!!
    I never imagined I could keep the majority of my orchids in one location, but this shadehouse is a dream. I've moved even the typical lower light orchids out here and I'm optimistic. The main thing is I'll need to keep everything well hydrated in Summer. The key will be to get all the orchids in a very well draining set up. EVERY SINGLE orchid is in need of a repot! When will this happen? Not sure - but in the mean time, the rain is definitely a good thing :)

    You almost can't give a Renanthera enough light. In florida we condition them to full sun outside to get blooms

    I’ve just found your videos so I’m catching up. I have 1 blooming size stanhopea nigroviolacea. I have it in a wire basket in high light & it flowers well. Spectacular large blooms with very strong scent. I’m also in Brisbane.

    Will you get a rain cover for the shadehouse?

      No as long as everything is well draining rain is very welcome! Winter rain might be my only concern - especially for the phals.. but that’s a problem for next year 😂

    stinking Frances Fox, I'm giving mine away. I have had that plant 4 years and it doesn't want to make any effort to bloom. Multiple directions of growth, definitely blooming size (and has been), nothing to show for it.
    The Hoyas will definitely eat the shade house if you let them. They might be better suited as hanging baskets in the house where they can just hang down, unless you've got a shady front porch or something.

    You have done a fantastic job while being so busy. I’m sure your man is a treasure and so supportive of your passion. What do you have on the floor of your green house and how does the watering system work? Is it automatic? Cheers, Pip from over the ditch. 🤗

      It's astroturf! Haha I usually hate the stuff but it serves this purpose really well. I didn't want gravel, and the astroturf stops weeds, drains excellently and is super easy to clean (pick up dried leaves / blooms etc). We just attach the watering system to our hose. Eventually might automate it, but for now, its manual.

    Lovely to see you back. Can you suggest perhaps a website I could look up to try to identify an orchid I was given about 3 years ago? I remember it may have had a label but I was told it was not correct. It has never bloomed but has had a large amount of new growth in the past 12 months. I’d really like to know what it is and what position it should be in. Thanks.

      Your best bet is probably a local orchid society or a Facebook page for orchid enthusiasts. Roger (from Rogers orchids) has a very active fb community you may be able to ask.
      Blooms will be easier unless your plant has a very distinctive growth habit.

    Its so good to see your back. Love your set up where did you get your shade house? I would have a plant hanger and wind it through the hangers and have them in your home where baby can't get it.

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  2 роки тому

      I got it made by a dedicated shadehouse installer in Brisbane. We don't really have curtain hangers if that's what you mean - they are kind of unconventional and attached to roof which is too high to hang stuff off :(

    Welcome back!! An idea for the Hoya, you can hang them on the roof, even in the middle, since it’s shaded. But they can handle morning direct sunlight too.
    And improving on what you’ve done, try to get the plants, in the same trey, on a descending level from the wall so it’s easy reached for inspection / film. Thats help in their growth habit too. (might be saying this since I have OCD 😉😉)
    I actually thought you’d put your rack in there, but it’s nice to see personalized shelves. Waiting to see your entire collection again.

    • @OrchieDee
      @OrchieDee  3 роки тому

      Do you mean place the trays on an angle?

    • @anniesaddictions
      @anniesaddictions 3 роки тому

      @@OrchieDee not an angle… but the taller ones to the wall, since you don’t have a lot of taller ones… and to place them not all along the wall but keeping space between the walled plants so the sunshine will get through to the smaller ones. For instance the taller Dens, they need so much light you can use them as a shield along the walls of the shade house to filter sunlight further to the less needed ones. 😊
      Since your Hoyas are in smaller pots dripping will not be an issue as long as all receiver good sunshine and air movement. Anyways, there will always be orchids over heading each other. And every plant will definitely get use to the natural elements overtime. Make sure you’ll use a more airy potting mix for the ones you will be repotting so the drying off will be quick. That’s what I did when I put everything outside. Orchids and Hoyas. In fact my Hoyas receive full direct sun. And when I put them, most were in medium size. One or two burned, then acclimated. So don’t you worry!!
      With a baby, I think you took the best decision to put them outside. Good luck!!!🍀

      @@OrchieDee oh, we don't really get a white christmas here in west-central europe. Temps usually are between 2 and 5 degrees C in late december, so we get a grey and soggy christmas😆, december 2017 had a total of 6h of sunshine for example😬. But it makes you want to sit in front of a fireplace with your family and drink hot chocolate which is neat😀

    Your orchids are wonderful and loving being organized. Great blooms to start the season. Your last one in this vídeo caught my attention in particular because she looks so much like one I have, both leaves and blooms. Great orchid but it does not have a tag. Mine blooms without a sheath... So, no, not the same thing as I can see yours has a sheath !!! I do not mind no ID orchids but this one is so good that I would like to identify it...
