  • FINALLY! A new Orchies in Bloom video.
Summer tends to be a quieter few months for blooms for me. Well... not this year!! December has some real showstoppers. The Vandas are coming out in full force this year. They are absolutely thriving in the shadehouse conditions. A lot of my seedling vandas have also now reached flowering size. Orchid growing is once again becoming a joy.... we won't talk about all the repotting that needs to be done though :D

Thank you for showing your orchids. I love that you have a few memorial orchids for your special souls. I do the same with roses.
Your dear little Maisie is such a cutie pie. 🦋🙂🌟

Maisie is such a cutie, the way she was reaching out for the epi, you have a budding (forgive the pun!) orchid grower.
I have Aerides houlletiana, leeana, oderata and quinquevulnera, but they are very small. Do you know how old your houlletiana was before it started blooming? Looking at the size of your plant I have many years before mine blooms. 🇦🇨

The I believe this is the 4th summer of blooming for my houlletiana. (Skipped the second year). I don't think it was very big when it first bloomed. Are you on instagram (@orchie_dee)? I have the post on there from Nov 2018. I can see about 3 leaves either side...
I walked into the shadehouse after work yesterday and I smelled the fragrance straight away... it's opened!!
My quinquevulnera also has 6 spikes!!

@@OrchieDee I dont have a instagram. I think at best I could hope for 3 years before blooming, leeana has 3 pairs of leaves, oderata 2 pair, houlletiana has three but a much smaller plant, and the quinquevulnera only have 2 pair each. You could see them on my channel, I've done 3 videos. Three of my Aerides are shown in the video that has a picture of my dog on her perch where she sits while I mess about with my plants.

I’ve found an easier way to kill Dendrobium beetles. Sneak up on them, put a container under where they are, as you go right close they’ll drop. It’s normally hard to find where they’ve dropped to but if you have something under it that’s where they’ll end up and play dead. You can then take them to where you can put them on the ground and step on them. Not so bad as having to crush them in your hands. Give it a try, you’ll find it works. I guess you already know to look out for their larvae, they take on the colour of whatever they eat which makes them hard to see. I was told to cut off whatever they are on, bag it in plastic and leave the sealed bag in the sun for about 2 weeks to make sure they are dead. This all sounds a bit brutal but it’s impossible to get rid of these things with sprays etc.
So on a happier note, your orchids are looking very happy in their new home, gorgeous blooms I must say.

Yes I put a tissue underneath to catch them when they drop! Such sneaky pests!!

Hello Dee, I’m located south of Brisbane but north of Gold Coast and would love to know where I can buy orchids from ( other than rescues from Bunnings 😉 ) that is close by? Much appreciated Jill

    • @OrchieDee

I've bought majority of my orchids online! But Fame Orchids is out Redland way. And there's a few north of Brisbane like Aranbeem (but I still buy online). The other option is to keep an eye out for local orchid shows. They area quite fun to attend, but recommend going in early to get the best selection!

Truly devastating Diane. It's been a very sad year. Another mother we all knew (we all did pilates together) also lost her bub a couple months earlier at 5mo when her mum fell in the park during a magpie attack.

Sending love and light to Mabel's family and everyone who has been touched by her while she blessed the world with her presence ❤ it is such a beautiful shade house, I absolutely love it. Agree with who makes it, stays and who doesn't, lesson learned ... it was all in good faith, after all! Gorgeous blooms! And so much to look forward to 🤩 wishing you a wonderful week, lovely lady! Family, pups, orchids ❤

My thoughts go out to Mabel's family.
Your blooms are absolutely amazing, as usual, and so is your little offspring :). I'm sorry if I missed any updates, since I have not been online much + I always forget to check the YT community posts but, how are Frankie and Tobie?
Wishing you a wonderful week, without any more of these pesky dendrobium beetles!

Frankie and Toby are well!! But... yes Maisie has slightly taken over in getting attention lol. I will be sure to include them in my next video :) :)
