I’m disabled and I just wanted to let you guys know that most disabled people won’t mind if you use the term disabled! Most of us actually prefer disabled over differently abled! Of course this won’t be true for every disabled person on the planet but I have talked to a ton of disabled people in my lifetime and disabled is the term we all have preferred I’m not trying to be rude or anything I just wanted to let y’all know that disabled isn’t a bad term and it is more than okay to use it!

About the mother with the white dress: if she's really a narcissist she wouldn't have changed if someone called her out on it. She knew what she was doing and she did it on purpose to get attention. The wine bottle move was honestly the best thing the daughter could've done because a narcissist will always try to save face and it obviously worked.

Gonna throw this out for reassurance: it’s not a hard and fast rule that “anyone who knows anything about weddings knows that if there’s an objection then the wedding can’t continue”. I was married by an Anglican priest and if he ever had an objection he would pull that person aside to a private room and ask them for a legal reason the couple can’t get married. If there’s no legal reason, he will then escort the person out if necessary and the wedding continues on. (Didn’t happen at my wedding but that was his procedure)

As someone who had a surprise period on her wedding day… the comment of planning ur wedding around your cycle is something to consider especially if you are prone to having ur monthly without any warning at times. I cried so hard when I realized I bled through my dress. Thankfully the owners of the venue acted fast and took my dress and cleaned it for me as I cried in the bathroom stunned at the fact it happened to begin with. To this day there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for that woman, I lost my mom to cancer before I could get married so I didn’t have my parents at my wedding and that act alone was such a monumental moment. She got the stain completely out, saving my wedding dress so that I could cherish it for a lifetime without the tragic reminder I ruined my own dress.

As a disabled person, I beg you not to use the phrase “differently abled”. Not unless a disabled person tells you to refer to them specifically that way. The disabled community as a whole prefers that you just call us disabled. The phrase “differently abled” was made by abled bodied people who thought that being disabled was such a bad, shameful thing that they needed to force a new more acceptable label on us. That mentality is ableist and is so harmful to us. Disabled is what we literally are, and to treat the word “disabled” like it’s something bad, shameful, and dirty is treating us like we’re bad, shameful, and dirty. I know you mean well and are just misinformed, so I hope from now on you quit using this harmful phrase. “Wheelchair bound” is another bad one but I know you were just repeating the story. The best term is wheelchair user. I use a wheelchair, I’m not bound to it. Just like I wear glasses, I’m not bound to them.

    • @sugarcookie312

I agree with this for the most part (I am also disabled) but it is important to understand that some people actually ARE wheelchair bound. @@sugarcookie312 your opinion is totally valid. I just personally feel very uncomfortable with “wheelchair bound” and I know a lot of others do, too. I deal with a lot of ablism for using a wheelchair and people act like the wheelchair is chaining us down, when it’s actually the thing giving us some freedom back. So I guess this is our way of dealing with some of that ablism towards using wheelchairs. Plus we find it weird that it’s the only device to accommodate a disability that people say you’re “bound” to and that doesn’t feel right, especially when combined with how much ablism we face specifically just for using a wheelchair. Like my own family tried to stop me from getting one even though I was sick of being bedridden and stuck inside. I could talk all day about this but I just hope you get that we have valid reasons for being uncomfortable with “wheelchair bound” and I hope that you can respect that. I shouldn’t have forced my preference on anyone else, though. I was just under the impression that all wheelchair users felt this way but I feel bad about my mistake. I’m very sorry. I ask that everyone respect the terms that the individual wants to be referred to as.

I use a wheelchair as well most of the time which is the only reason I am speaking on the use of the term wheelchair bound because I use it because if I want to go anywhere I HAVE to bring a wheelchair or I am not going to get very far.

Early 2020, I went to my childhood friend's sister's wedding. I wore a forest green dress to the wedding, when I got there, I noticed the brides maid's dresses were the same color. I had no idea and I felt so embarrassed. I was unable to go home and change because it was an hour and a half drive both ways.

I don’t think you’re in the wrong at all. If you had no idea then what were you supposed to do. Also if it’s a problem for the bridal party, then it should be put on the invitations. Additionally, forest green is an unusual color for the most part so it’s not like you could have predicted that anyways.

I was going to say this. I have been to at least 20 catholic weddings and a couple of my friends were told about that... Guess by whom? The priests themselves(and they don't even know each other)... 😂😂😂
They were both more old school types and they would see a prank in the middle of religious procedures the biggest sign of disrespect. So they gave the warning to every couple to avoid any problems.
Every "funny" friend was warned by the bride and groom, just in case. 😂😂😂
I think more progressive ones could consider giving a pass depending on how the groom and his friend reacted after learning the wedding could be suspended. They wouldn't think it's funny but they usually are a little less strict and more forgiving of "naive" nonsense.

the wine throwing story made me think of my parents' wedding. my grandmother (dad's mom) literally FABRIC MATCHED my mom's wedding dress so she could "match the bride." idk if it was due to some sort of weird emotional incest between her and my dad, or if she simply couldn't handle not being the center of attention -- both are equally likely

My sis is a narcissist and I've spent 20 years dealing with her, she is so bad that she would spread rumors and lies about our parents (no one believed her because they all knew my parents) eventually it got so bad that my dad had to move her out into her own apartment that parents paid for. The psychiatrist that diagnosed her told my mom that if she didn't get away from her, she very likely die. To this day sis spreads lies about parents. She will do anything to get attention not caring if it was negative or if she hurts anyone in the process. I can feel for that girl and I would absolutely throw wine on sis if she pulled that shit at either mine or one of her kids weddings.

The deep dive on the podcast sent me here, just wanted to share my wedding story after you said you didn't believe it would be the happiest day because of other people. My husband (26m) and I (24f) got married last October after being together for 4 years. Literally everything from getting my nails and hair done before to the last moment of the reception was ruined by other people there. I got my hair dyed black and my mom threw a fit (3 days before service), I had my nail appointment set up the next day for weeks and mom cancelled last minute so I went with my middle brother (#2 of 3 - this also caused another fit), I drove 30 mins from my home to get ready with my mom and I WAS LATE after she bought me lingerie that was 2 sizes too big and made me put EVERYTHING on before realizing it wouldn't work, MIL and FIL brought my husband's older brother (28m now) who was hard on drugs at the time, we had a service with the JOP during pandemic but all of them pushed to attend inside the office (at first JOP said we could have 2 guests, but he gave in), my mom invited her abusive mom and pedo stepdad who I refuse to acknowledge to the reception, BIL stayed for about 10-15 minutes before he left to pout in the truck because he DIDN'T LIKE HIS FOOD, then my husband spent about 70% of the remaining reception trying to get him to come back in. 🙄 Everyone but myself was on their absolute worst fucking behavior. I do have to say, now that it isn't so recent, I truly believe it was the best day of my life. I know that I expressed my deep love to my best friend and he returned that love to me in the presence of people we love. 💗

My uncle was a preacher, and officiates weddings, and from what I know- religious weddings with a priest/religious officiate will stop at objections because if a loved one, someone you trust enough to come to the wedding at all, objects to you marrying this person then they take that as someone who knows you better than you do. They take that as you trusting your loved ones to have your best interest.
I dont know, I personally am not Christian. I don’t hold these beliefs at all, but that’s what I understand of it.

Me being raised by two narcissist’s I can totally understand where the girl who spilled the wine is coming from. My mom and my dad are not together so I had to relive over and over again the same tendencies, when you tell a narcisissist they can’t do what they want they will do it anyway no matter the situation, cause if it’s making them feel good about themselves then no one else matters, so if she had just told the mother to change clothes the mom would not have listen. I know the mom is saying “you could have just told me and I would’ve changed” but knowing my parents and their tendencies this would not have worked, so the girl just skipped a few steps and did what she would have end up doing anyways

"differently abled" no no no no no. As a physically disabled person who knows a lot of other disabled people, "disabled" is often the preferred term, and in general, "disabled" is not a 'bad' word. Trying to skirt around disability by finding a phrase that feels more comforting is...not the greatest way go about it. Also "wheelchair bound" is a no-go, too. You would rephrase it with "He uses a wheelchair." His wheelchair gives him independence and freedom that he otherwise wouldn't have. There's a lot more to unpack here that I don't have the energy to type out, but I just found your channel and I've been watching episodes at random here and there (they're ALL good! omg). I think it'd be super cool if you did an episode on disability/illness to better understand how to communicate about and to people with disabilities.

The “objection” wedding, dump and maybe even sue him for the money. Or something to legally obligate him to pay you back. Your own husband planned this, and should have researched what would happen. Like, if I were to do ANY prank, I would do research to make sure it wouldn’t backfire somehow. Look up customs behind objections, and you’d know that objections of friends/families will end the wedding in a religious setting. Yet, the husband planned this and even planned a party afterwards. It seems to me like he may have known of the possibility considering his sister planned the party afterwards that was separate from the reception.
So nope, that sounds like you have to legally obligate him to pay you back. Because a man who does this deserves to be dumped, but when you dump him he will def decide to never pay you back. So, you’re gonna have to obligate him somehow to do so.

I am FAR from a wedding expert, but I would think a lot of the reason modern weddings cost tens of thousands of dollars is because of the outrageous venues people select.
Back in the day, most people just held weddings at their local church and receptions at their local Lion's Club (or something similar). I would imagine people could still have decently affordable weddings today if they didn't get so extravagant with it.

2:16 Weddings from fifty years ago weren't as extravagant/as much of a show as they are now. Granted, issues like inflation weren't as much of a problem then, so houses were more affordable. But still, people are taking weddings too far; they've become shows instead of being the solemn and beautiful occasions they deserve to be.
