How to wing foil, How much can you learn in a year?

  • What a difference a year makes! Follow us from the very start to where we are now, a year later! Get better riding the foil with inspiration, tips, tricks and seeing the progress you can make in a year wing foiling.
    I can say, from learning a new sport with no background of similar sports, it has been a roller coaster of learning. Some days things just go great, and some days you don't get it. But practice and practice are the keys to getting better. We all would like to do backflips and ride 3 m waves on a downwind. But in reality, most of us are learning in the time we have and progression is slow most of the time and fast at other times. Some of us are living in areas with warmer weather and can ride all year. Others live with colder winters and that makes it difficult to ride. The practice part is important, watching video to see and memorize how to do things is also important.
    I like to say. The good thing about learning to wing foil is that two days are not the same. The bad thing about learning wing foil is that two days are not the same! It is not always easy, but it is always fun! Stay out there and ride as often as you can and push your limits and you will be one of those who can master the jibe and foot switch, the tack turn, riding the waves or what you want to be great at!
    I hope my videos will assist you in your journey forward and I am always open to suggestions about what you would like to see in future videos!

    I started in April of this year. I have lost over 50 lbs in the process and replaced the fat with stacked on muscle. At age 48, this is the 1st time in my life of having a 6 pack. I learn something new every time I go out on the water and I go out as frequently as the wind allows. Super challenging sport to start with no watersports background, but if you can endure the process long enough to figure out how to get on foil, the rewards are endless. Thanks for sharing!

      Hey, wow! That’s great success! You’ve not only had a great time in the water, getting lean and having fun as well. What could be better? Go, brother, go! How far are you in managing your stuff, jibing and so on?

      I told my husband your achievement. He is trying to lose 10 lbs (maybe) to be able to fly in more light wind conditions, but not easy for his age. (just watch me play) Weight is a cruel reality in foiling.

    • @foilfanatic
      @foilfanatic 2 роки тому +1

      now the battle is muscle mass. I started off at 226lbs and went down as low as 169. Now I am 182 because the muscle is replacing fat. Cruel reality and blessing at the same time. I am now just working with the cards that have been dealt. I am happy to have that problem.

    I came from windsurfing background, almost 30 years. It turned out that for me, the critical component to learn foil was FLAT WATER with fairly strong wind. The flat water slowed down the process so you could make all the necessary balance adjustments as the board gradually loses surface resistance. It’s hard to get the board to accelerate in bumpy water, and things happen suddenly, hard to respond quickly.

    • @wingfoil_mallorca
      @wingfoil_mallorca  Рік тому

      Hey David, cool that you tried a new sport. I agree it’s unusual to have flat water as the harder part in learning. Usually it’s the waves that messes with you. Anyway, it’s just to keep at it and you’ll push through that level and be up and flying like you want. Let me know how you progress! Stay safe.

      Hi! Thank you. Good for you. What exiting times you have ahead! It’s different to learn a new sport at 50 compared to 25. But as you have seen in the video, practice, practice and some more compensates for slower learning. It helps to have prior knowledge of wind sports for sure. We have seen friends coming from windsurf and they picked it up really fast. Anyway, I don’t know if you are up foiling yet. That’s one tricky thing to learn, but man do much fun. How’s the conditions in NZ? Where snouts do you ride? I was I NZ many years ago and I have great memories from that trip. Stay safe!

The good thing about wing foil is two days are not the same. The bad thing about wing foil is that two days are not the same! It hasn't always been easy, but always fun! Nice video. I have same experience as yours. I started wing foiling in Oct 2020 and I have no water sports experience except SUP. I watched lots of UA-cam video and practiced a lot. Thank you! Yes, it’s all about going again, and again and again..The jibe, we worked on that one long enough before it was working. The hardest part was getting the foot switch working every time. Took us many, many attempts do get it right. I don’t like riding fakie. If you stay fakie you will get it working a lot faster. Good luck and stay on the game! 🤙

    Amazing Frederic. Just like me. We are about the same age. This is is the kind of video that inspires others to persevere. It takes a lot of practice - and I mean "a lot". But its so much fun. Today I managed the first gybe after 200 attempts (at least!). What a feeling. So pleased. I ride Ensis, too. Still stick to my larger 118ltr board and larger 2000 foil, no need to push limits to much at my age (even though I do have the gear to try). Practice, practice, practice. Keep with it folks. Don't give up. It is hard but the rewards are so sweet.

Went pretty well, I remembered how to do everything and got back up to speed pretty quickly. I was speaking with another guy who had a wing and was teaching his wife how to use it while on an old windsurfing board, so based on your video I’m going to take the plunge and get a wing and try it on the windsurfer first as well. Great video Fredric! Nice to see other's journeys, I like how yours is presented. Mine has been a year and a half now. My journey has been two-fold. From learning on foils I designed and over that year and a half, slowly perfecting my design algorithms to build foils that behave the way I envisage when I am designing them. I couldn't be happier now, 2 of my new series in use for medium and lighter winds and another 3D printed model almost ready for moulding for more speed while retaining wave advantages and another, a mould almost ready for a fast wing for my weight or a tester for regular weight people. I'm not foil gybing yet, it's not been on my priority list but it's a package for me. Riding the stuff I design and pushing the designing to it's limits for my environment.

    Hello there! Great video and it gives me hope that I too will be able to foil because like you I'm an absolute beginner. I weigh approx 65kgs and have bought an 94 litre board with a 5.2m Ensis wing. Do you think the 94 litre board is enough or should I start with a 104 litres? You're videos are a great inspiration for folks like me who are just getting into it - thank you so much!

      Hello Amar, thank for your kind words! And for watching. 😃 65 to 94 is 29 litres difference. Which is good but it also depends where you ride, if you wear a thick wetsuit, boots and gloves, or if you ride in a thin shorty? The bigger board will help you learn faster but you will outgrow it faster. The smaller, harder in the beginning and I could be an extended period before you are up in foil. But you would be on the 94L board longer. Think about if you want to be up on foil fast or not!😉 I’m happy my videos help, and there are plenty more to watch to support you along rhe fun journey you have ahead. Where do you ride? Stay safe!

    Great stuff, it's a big deal hearing from learners, really interesting to see that being towed behind a boat didn't work well! Perhaps if the hull of the boat was flatter, and no wake was generated, the experience would've been better eh? I was wondering if boat towing would be a necessity when learning? I've had one practice wing foil session on the sea with an instructor, I was on a windsurf board in low wind. It was hard work, but it felt amazing when the gusts filled the wing. Later I had a go on an eFoil, the huge size and very big weight surprised me, it was way harder than it looked, you had to make so many micro movements. eFoiling is worth it if on a flat lake, you can really get used to how the foil balance basics work. Having a wing to lean against must be better in some ways, what do you think? After much thought, I saw the potential, and now have a full beginner Gong setup, of 6.5ft inflatable board, 90 cm mast and 2kish cm foil and 5m wing, can't wait to head out in 15-20ish mph winds in 0-2ft waves on the south coast of England. Totally agree that you'll need reasonable wind speeds for your wing, to effectively learn in, or it'll be difficult. I can only make it to my parent's place on the coast 1-2 per month, so it'll be a longer than usual learning curve, think spring and summer will maybe have the most favourable learning conditions, e.g. onshore/sideshore winds and low/no waves. Keep up the great work!

      Hey SG, thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Appreciate that! You are on the right path. You’ve had a taste of it and now when you have your own equipment it’s gonna be so much fun. Without a doubt you will find a way to get to the sea more than a couple of times per month 😉 Remember that it takes time to get it right, just keep trying and as you mentioned. Be aware that you have 11-12 knots or a little more to get the best possibilities to learn. Great stuff, let me know how it goes! Stay safe!

    got lakes and the sea to my disposal it's only the northsea but lots of wind pretty much always, would a 90 litre board be too small to get started (76kg)?

    • @wingfoil_mallorca
      @wingfoil_mallorca  Рік тому +1

      Hey, that's great. Colder water, but there are a lot of great wet suits to fix that! LOL. Regarding to the question of the board size. In general, 15 L more than your body weight is small to start out on. But that depends on your previous experience. Maybe you are a long time wind surfer or kite surfer? Then it's probably valid to start out on +15L. Also, if you are very, very stubborn and REALLY want to learn. You could struggle a month or two to get the balance on that small size board. But if you don't have that background, i'd say that probably 30-40L over your weight is a good starting point. The reason is that a big board gives you the stability of focusing on learning to navigate with the wing. Best start is to get on a SUP board of 100-200L more than your body weight to learn how to navigate the wing. Learn how to go straight, do turns, go upwind (super important skill). When you are in control, then you can move over to a foil board of +30-40L. And when you are comfortable with that one and are up on foil more than on the water, you can move down to a 90L board. That is the route I suggest. Think about it, maybe it feels reasonable to you or too long and complicated. You decide your way. But the way I have put out here will work and it will work 100%. Also you might think, it is a lot of boards, and expensive. Yes, it could be, but second hand boards are getting cheaper every month, so, it is reasonable. If you take shortcuts, be prepared for a more difficult learning, not impossible. But you know you! What type of energy and commitment do you have? Are you a stubborn fighter or do you feel like it is hopeless if it get's too complicated? Anyway, good luck and come back and let me know your thoughts and experiences as you progress. Stay Safe!

And we have a lot of sun here so it charges at the same time... Camelbak, no. We normally ride 1 1/2-2h and that is too short to need one. But if you do longer rides you should. It is a great idea. And as you ride you drink and get lighter, perfect! 😃

    Hallo,
    I'm almost 61, nevertheless each time I see some video of wingfoiling I get that feeling of wanting to go out and try it.
    I live close to a lake where I can do it.
    I have only experience with watersports as SUP, kayak and Catamaran sailing. No skateboard, snowboarding or any foil experience at all.
    As I live in Belgium winter is almost here. With that this is a time that people sell boards, foils and wings as they want to progress in smaller and better gear next year.
    There is no store anywhere close to my location, no place to rent or try out some gear. Best, and probably only way, to start is buying my own gear and go out learning with try and error till I get it.
    I now have the opportunity to buy some good 2e hand gear. Not much to find here either.
    But what to buy ? I want to buy something I can start with as a newbie but can keep for longer without having to sell, with loss, and buy new.
    I already bought a wing, Cabrinha X2 6m and a foil, Shinn 82cm mast, 1950cm² front wing.
    Now I have to decide on a board. I've the choice between a Starboard X wing 145 or a Fanatic Sky 110
    So one has more volume, the other a 20cm shorter and relative significantly lighter.
    What to take ? I'm 175cm tall a d about 82Kg (in shorts !)
    Oh yes, so for lake conditions.
    More volume, more buoyancy, more stability, more drag, more sticky on the water, ... needs more speed to lift on foil ?
    Less volume, takes longer to learn, less water contact surface, faster lift ... ?
    So ... 145 or 11o Liter board ?
    (I tried 2x on my SUP but that I won't do anymore as I got downwind way to fast and to far, plus only a short part of walk of shame is possible walking in the water (not on shore) as other part is deeper than standing depth)

    • @wingfoil_mallorca
      @wingfoil_mallorca  Рік тому

      Hey, I share your dilemma. Was like that for me as well. What to get? I’d say the 110L board is a good start for a 75 kg rider with a 6M wing. The 145L would be easier but you would grow out of it very quickly. Therefore the 110L is +35L above your weight and would be enough. The foil you have also sounds pretty decent for learning on. Remember to be patient if you have no one to teach you. I would still recommend you practicing on the SUP until you can go in a straight line, jibe and go upwind. To learn all of that directly on the small foil board could be a very big task. Just beware that the step to a small foil board is a big step. Let me know how it goes! Cheers and good luck!

      Well ... as I'm alone and my B-day is coming up ... giving myself a present ... and knowing that there are only 5 boards (a 35, 75, 95, 110 and 145) in Belgium on 2e hand sites ! ... I bought the 110 and the 145 ... just to be sure not to miss out on it as both of these are really as out of the box condition for a good deal. Selling the 145 hopefully soon when at the level to go onto the 110 😉
      I hope the weather will permit me to go out on the water with my gear (as i don't like the cold) to discover this new sport. Find out how the progress will be for me as a total newbie, no other watersport experience to fall back on.

      Great stuff there. You covered every angle! 😉 Now go out on the big board with the objective to learn how to navigate using the wing. You want to go in a straight line, jibe and last but not least go upwind. Good luck!

      5 runs up and down of 3 with walk of shame back to reset.
      A lot of balancing acts and acrobatic falls ;-)
      And who was there along with me, even on the same board (Starboard X wing 145) ... the king of Belgium ! Also getting his debute in winging.

    • @wingfoil_mallorca
      @wingfoil_mallorca  Рік тому +1

      Hi Pavel, 97kg and light winds are more challenging to learn with. For actual foil gear, what you need is a board of 6-7 feet. A big foil. >2000cm or if you can get an Axis foil, you will be fine with the PNG 1150 (1787cm2). For a wing you will need a 6M or possibly a 7M. Just keep an eye on the width as the tips will be getting in the water if it is very wide. I would recommend that you start out with your wing and a SUP board of minimum 100L more than your weight. The idea is to have a steady platform so you can focus on learning to navigate with the wing as step one! And not to have to worry about trying to balance on a small foil board. When you can navigate in a controlled manner and go upwind easily. Then you can move over to the foil board. Good luck and let me know how you proceed. Stay safe!

      For kiting, I always preferred the ocean since the kite gets you past the break really easily and the wide open beaches make it very easy to self launch and self land. Wing foiling is probably more of a Columbia River Gorge thing.

      Wow, amazing spot. You’re lucky! Yes, we fight through shore breaks like that a lot. Three steps forward and two back with each wave.
      We’re also fortunate to have wave breakers close as our port is near. So when the waver are more than a meter, meter and half. We sneak in close to the wave breakers as they shield some. Looking at that video, we’re not talking about any type of shelter I see. So you go in if the waves are not too strong. The foil is what keeps us having to fight through to a mother and some depth. But it’s worth it. Even if it takes 5 min. Going out is another matter, easier but nonetheless dangerous. But you get good at what you practice and we make it work. And if we can, you will go on days with not very big waves. Cool place you have there!
