- In this video I give a short tour and test drive of a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport. I take viewers on a close look through the interior and exterior of this suv while showing details, over viewing of features, and noting unique styling cues to the vehicle itself. I show the suv idling as well as take it on a thorough test drive through the city and highway on various surfaces. A thorough drive of this suv designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.
This is personally my favorite generation Explorer. Clean truck indeed!
I had a Ford explorer 1998 with 92,458 miles back in 2004 when I got it"Now in 2021 with 198,479 still going strong love my suv.100%✔️❤️👍
Kyle, just so you know, you really don't have to apologize for not turning on the radio on your test drives. Nobody cares to hear the music, just how the vehicle sounds is what we wanna hear.

With the radio on we would not hear the lens cap banging on the camera

That Gen of Explorer is my favorite. I liked the 95-7s for the Neon 3rd brake like, but the style exterior refresh of the 98-01s is nice. And that SOHC 4.0 V6 is awesome. Love the sound of the OHV 4.0 V6 though.
Im 11 years old, my dad told me it was ok that i can keep that car and he can have the 2007/ 8 chevy suv while i keep the 1998 ford explorer. He said ir waa fine so i can drive ir anytime any day!
Once again i can drive myself really easily and the steering wheel is really Smooth to drive and really fun to! Im learning how to stop slow on breaks.
Thanks for the interview / test drive!
The chevy SUV is really better than the explorer but i like both!
I have a 2001 sport(and a 2000 XLT 4dr). The sport I love because it is very fun and easy to maneuver into a parking space. It's 4.0 and 2WD I get up to 27 on the highway with it. Love it!
John H which one is faster?
I love how the engine sounds!
My dad drives a 2003 Sport Trac now with 222k miles & it's still running strong with only a few problems since he first bought it new.
How about now
@@moelester3062 He sold it five years ago & replaced it with a 2017 Honda Ridgeline. It had a tick over 300k miles when he sold it with no problems.
i have an 02 Sport. out of the 5 cars Ive driven a lot, this is the best daily driver
KyleTVProductions the best . I'm a bit
I like the explorer
love😘 the ford V6 sound
Talha Sohail I love it too. It gives me nostalgia
Especially with that first gear whine.
Wether if it’s a Ford Explorer or a Mercury Mountaineer (which is the same car), this generation of Explorer is very awesome and represents the 90’s and early 2000’s in a great way.
And ranger and the b series
Awesome I have that car a Ford Explorer 1998 & it works great ! It’s my first car 😇
Cool my uncle just gave me his. It s the manual version
I got a 2003 loving it
plz someone see this comment and replied. ok so I'm wantong to buy a 1998 ford explorer sport. first vehicle that has 4x4 ive drove. the little knob was pointing to auto on the one I test drove like in this video. but the way this guy pulled out seemed smooth. the one I test drove seemed stuck in like a low gear like it was trying to drive through mud. took second for the vehicle to really get going. and felt sluggish. so is that because its automatically in 4x4 all the time? am I missing something? I dont wanna buy it and drive it wrong and mess it up? plz help
idkuok No that seems normal, these cars aren’t really going to pick up the pace in a matter of seconds- takes a bit for them to get going.
The Late 90's Explorers are my favorite cars, well, ever.

I have one of these with a Manual 5 speed transmission. It's a whole different vehicle with a manual.
Agree
Oo rare nowadays. Nice! Would love to see a 2 door manual 4x4 with an LS+Tremec 6 speed swap.. i suggest an LS V8 because of how easy those integrate but obviously the most ideal 2 door manual 4x4 explorer swap would be with the current gen 460 hp 5.0 Coyote, fox racing shocks, ARB front and rear lockers, Dynatrac dana 60 rear and dana 44 front axles.. You know what i'm sayin. Totally stock interior though except for upgraded speakers replacing stock ones in their stock housings and a hidden aux jack, hidden amp, maybe a couple moderately sized subwoofers hidden under the rear bench.just beaming my thoughts into the abyss of an old stale comments section.. maybe you'll build something like that though
It would be cool if the 5.0 explorer had a manual
That’s gonna be my first car, 1 owner, new tires and it’s 1500$! I can’t wait
01 sport just hit 100k had it for a year no problems it's turns on a dime and is quick for the v6 gonna grow a k/n and flow master on it next summer
These are pretty nice but I personally love the first gens. I have a 93 Eddie Bauer for my first rig and I love it
Stuff stuff and More stuff I like the 2020
My dad had a 93 Sport with a stick for awhile when I was little
I've got a 1997. I LOVE this thing! I've got it in the same color, but I've got the 3 spoke wheels. She's got 150k and still kickin!
I remember this car watching this video brings back memories I had
Those 4.0L V6 engines in the late-90's Explorers were wonderful.
Like you said, they aren't the fastest things in the world, but you also have to consider that the Explorer is an SUV after all.
They just sound amazing. Can't wait to put a K&N intake on the '98 Explorer Eddie Bauer I was promised. haha
@crystalscan2002 Yep. This generation Ford Explorer was the #1 most traded in vehicle for Cash for Clunkers.
I have a 07 Mountaineer with the 4.0L. The sound for a V6 is awesome. The power is a little on the low side, but with the stock 3.73 gears, it make the truck seem a lot faster. I love the gearing Ford put with the V6.
!😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁Wow Kyle! Your Test Drive Of The 1998 Ford Explorer Sport Was Fantastic. I Love The Fact That It Is My Son Christian’s Favorite Color Red, And Red Is Such A Beautiful Color. !The Back Of The Car Looks Super-Duper Clean To Me!
Nice ride!! The Ford Explorer is my second favorite car from Ford. 5*****
I have the 1998 SOHC 4.0 V6 with 190,000 miles it's still running and I've done nothing except oil and brakes on it. It's now at the point where I have to change the upper/lower ball joints, tie rods, shocks, wheel bearing, ect., but the parts are not that expensive and I know how to do it all myself. It's still worth about $2,500 and I can get it running great again for far less than that as opposed to spending $5,000 on something else because you really can't get anything worthwhile for less than that in my opinion. This truck has towed many vehicles, driven on the beach for fishing, dominated the snow when others were stuck, crashed into a tree and flipped on its side with barely any damage done to it....It's more than done it's fair share of work. The motor is still responsive and doesn't seem to have lost much power. I love my Dora the Explorer. I'll drive it until the wheels fall off. Actually, that's happened already and hasn't stopped me.
Oz TheWizard to
I had one and how I miss it ❤️
I love that transmission howl !!!
I drove this generation Ford Explorer Eddie Banana edition and I was throughly impressed with.
Heh. I bought a '97 2WD for $500. It had a rough idle and bad windshield but they were minor issues that I had fixed. 217k miles and she still sounds great. These old 2nd gens still look good for their age.
whoa that’s amazing deal.. ❤️
Throwback to the earl 2000's when we all saw this car everywhere
Yup
Still kind of do if you look
Best selling SUV in the us for a reason
MrStreetballer5 ui
Still do
@SrpskaCCCC apparently Ford Transmissions do this because 1 St Gear uses Spur Gears as opposed to Helical cut gears which are used on all gears in most transmissions except reverse because they are quieter but less efficent.......i LOVE that winding sound in First Gear
My favourite Ford of XX century.
It Was the first Ford what i liked
I have the same truck, but mine does not have 4x4, also brings his temper and I can not complain about his performance ... !!!
i liked those things, my mom had one, those things sounded good when it was in high rpm's still in 1st gear, loved the autotrac 4WD system.
@falaqdad15 its a whine in the 1st gear of the old Ford 4speed and 5 speed autos. I absolutely love that sound, idk why!
Beautiful late 90s suv 2 door is just awesome!
picking up a 98 eddie bauer f.e. with 260k km :D so excited! great suv
JDEDeddy beware of the transmission hope your rich because you will need to fix it constantly
@chepe707 mines not a Sport (thats the 2 door only), its a 4 door XLT. thanks for compliment.
I have a 98 Ford explorer sport like this one too. i like it as well, the only thing is that when you want to accelerate fast the RPM x1000 goes way up to high, which makes you have to let the accelerator go till the RPM lowers down again. But can easily make 65 MPH in 5-7 sec.
I have one a 97 with the 5 speed manual transmission and I love my car. Sharp like this red one.
i had an 99 4-door explorer that was 4 wheel drive. it was crap. died after 140,000 miles, but gave me numerous problems before. it didn't even run but the people at cash for clunkers took it. thank god.
@akirules1887 No, the Explorer has never gotten a stock 4 cylinder, only the 4.0 v6, or the 4.6 v8. And now the 3.5 v6 and soon to be (possibly) 2.5 Ecoboost.
Great first ride i love mine too
@kostl350 No if your engine is shaking you either have a vacuum leak most common a bad upper intake gasket very easy to replace then your engine will not be shaking.
Well... My steering wheel is a 98, my driver's door is 2001, my front bumper is a 97 Eddie Bauer, my back hatch Is either 99 or 00... The Vin is registered as 00, passenger door is also either 99 or 00, my rims are like 04 I think... Idk, got free new ones when I got new tyres... But only 4 of em, and one that was the spare, I'd guess from 98 because that seams to be the chrome year.. The spare I think is from a 95 or 97.... The roof rack is whatever year the chassis is, hopefully the Vin too, but a replaced whole dash wouldn't surprise me... Especially because it doesn't look anything like any of the other 00 models, but nearly identical to this one.....
It's alive though... Mostly...
@SrpskaCCCC Itr brings memorys back for me. Love it!
@4rdt0ugh08 I know, I grew up more around Toyotas, but, that whine takes me back to when I was a kid going for rides with my grandmother in her 92 Aerostar!!
I think your old videos are the best :)
Beautiful explore! What is the asking price? ❤
well thats sorta different but yes they are good, well built vehicles. some vehicles though are junk but look really nice and some are ugly but there's no way to kill them. its best when they are both. really well build and reliable and with nice looks and features.
Awesome test drive, the acceleration parts were awesome, god i love that winding sound!!!!
one of my good friends has this. i noticed on the V6 the transmission gears are very very close together. at first i thought it was a cvt. yea stupid me i know. but the 5 speed auto is very close geared on the v6. the v8 is what my uncle had and i knew when the transmission was shifting
I hope to get this for my first car, is it a reliable car?
According to Consumer Reports, WORSE than average. You have to remember it IS an "American" vehicle, so average would be GOOD!
It would be awesome if you could find a 08-10 Explorer Sport Trac with the Adrenalin package to do a video on.
Been looking for a vid like this
i really enjoy your videos. i can tell you take alot of pride in your work.
@chepe707 its supposed to do that. you obviously have the 4.0L SOHC V6 like mine. my 97 XLT does 0-60 in 7 seconds.
@FPGT24 yeah, take a video of your explorer lets all upload a video and see which one accelerates to a certain speed at a faster time.
getting a 2001
Same finna get on now
I have a 98 sport with 281 k heavy on gas but great in highway smooth
@williamtword it just does. You know, certain things just spark memories!
This was the vehicle which was featured in Jurassic Park tours.
Get one with a 4.0 OHV and a 5 speed. It'll last forever.
I agree 100%.
@SrpskaCCCC If you think the Ford RWD transmission makes a good whining sound, you'd love the Allison AT-540 transmission in the older gasoline school buses.
I like the sound of the v6 engine.
i mainly drive city and could use a tune up i still avg btw 13-14mpg. mine is also 95 with 180k 4x4 sport. good truck though, fun to drive esp in winter
the transmission on the 1995-2001 1995-2001 for Sport Ford Explorer
Transmission
5-speed M5OD-R1 manual
4-speed 4R55E automatic
4-speed 4R70W automatic
5-speed 5R55E automatic
Why Did You Turn On Then Washer Wiper Fluid
@Jeppe772 no the v6 sohc engine explorer get 18 city in 23 mpg on highway they are good on gas, now the v8 explorer is a different story lol.
Hye-Nyi Has A 98 Ford Explorer Sport With The Green Exterior Gray Interior
@FPGT24 ooh, its still nice. ill try to upload a video of my 98 explorer sport.
I am looking at a 96 Ford Explorer V8. It has 170k on it, but it is going only for 1800, and it has a brand new sticker, with new tires and the works. Is this a good deal?
Im potentially gonna have to swap the engine in my 98 sport. Does anyone know whether the 4.0l v6 is better OR a 5.0 tpi. I want to stay with relatively decent gas mileage, I'm probably at some point going to do a good fuel system as well for better fuel saving as well. I just need to know whether or not the v6 or v8 is more reliable
Can you please do a test drive for a 2005 Ford Explorer.
good to see osme of those stll around still :) tons of those got killed cash for clunkers last year
Why can't you do this more often?
@XxCACKOLINAxX yes they are, depends how much you use it, but i do 2 weeks with 50 dollars
Thanks for the upload man! That 'acceleration' bit was awesome! Did you floor it?
@crystalscan2002 it's about 16 city 20 highway
im lookin into gettin one of these, there are 2 at the dealer for same price. one is the sport with a 5 speed manual and the other is the 4dr auto and has 10k more miles on it. both are under 140k miles...any suggestions?
do you think it would make a good first car
Explorer owner how many of you guy like the leather seat on this explorer?
Nice truck!!!
what happened to the stereo?
im considering this as a first car
@FPGT24 i saw your video, looks pretty good, explorers sport are pretty darn great.
@saabkyle04 is it a ohv 4.0L i mean does it have pushrods?
"Sport" What's sporty about it?
Sport just meant it was a 2 door
Saabkyle04's got some pretty cool videos!
Yeah it has nothing on it until the timing chains on the SOHC jump teeth, or even if the plastic timing chain guides wear down break off and plug up your oil pan, and then you have a 4000 pound paper weight unless u want to spend 3k or so to swap engines. The exact reason why I have the OHV V8 in my explorer
@Jeppe772 why do u say that watch the gas gauge?
I have the same explorer, mine is white.
Class Video Class Car
Kyle where is the radio
I just got one for $550.00. It needs a few things but it starts and drives.
That’s a awesome deal ❤️🥰
My 98 5.0L XLT V8 has a good 260,000 miles and still runs as smoothly as when I first bought it. Great car, lots of cargo space, and decent gas mileage (I get around 18-21mpg with easy highway driving but less in the city). Tbh, I prefer the explorer to my previous 06 ford five hundred.
+Nathan R.O. thats nice to hear. there's a 2000 in my area that looks nice. i used to have a chevy cruze and didn't like it much
I've got 240,000 miles on my 1997 Explorer Eddie Bauer with the 4.0 sohc v6
Nice explorer.

I have the same car with the same color except it has leather seats.
