Same here, smoked cigarettes for 20 years, decided recently that was enough, I have been off them for 3 weeks so far. I also enjoy tobacco, and I have discovered that pipe smoking is a excellent way to do so, with greatly reduced health risks (compared to cigarettes)

bruce jordan hey mate; I gave up the cigs using Allen Carr’s - easy way to quit smoking - and it was easy!! He does mention that quitting all smoking is quitting... I actually did for 3 years and am now smoking the pipe because it’s more pleasant and I don’t draw back; so can get the nice pleasure and enjoy the patience of the pipe.. 🙏🏼💦

Not sure if anyone has already touched on this in the comments, but here in Canada we also have the Brigham brand which is known to use a rock maple "distillator", essentially a hollowed wooden dowel with a press-fit metal end. These are meant to cut down the moisture and acid from the smoke. It does seem to help and I enjoy them a lot. Happy piping!

Now that I've noticed that common American error*, I can't not notice it wherever I see it and it bugs my brain. I know some people won't get this but it's the opposite of _wanting_ to notice this stuff - I'd love for it to not bug me whenever I see it, that's the point! It's like seeing a wonky painting hung on a wall-it doesn't _matter_ but your brain's compelled to straighten it up.
*specifically American because it's those accents that pronounce "then" and "than" the same way; I'm English and the words don't sound the same thus people don't mix them up (I'm saying this because I know some will take offence and think I'm picking on their nationality)

    • @sinelocum

MoonlitVibe not necessarily. The American accent varies greatly from state to state, and in some areas it varies from town to town - sort of like birmies sound much different than Londoners. I Southern California people from the San Fernando valley have a completely different accent that those people hailing from Fresno, and they’re quite close to one another.

Very good explanation, sir! I always recommend a filtered pipe (specifically a 9mm filtered pipe and charcoal filters) for new and nearly new pipe smokers. Once you've gotten the hang of smoking a pipe with a filter in place, you can always smoke a filtered pipe without a filter in place to see if you find it more or less enjoyable. I find that filters lessen tongue-bite and don't affect the taste detrimentally. In fact, I find that filters help to focus the taste of the tobacco for me. And 9mm charcoal filters virtually eliminate tongue bite. Thanks for all of your informative videos! I know many of us miss your regular content. Hope you are well!

I would need it. I tried my dad's thick black tobacco. Brutal tasting. I want to try a pipe and need to get a nice one. Normally I smoke rollups and cigars. Even with Rollup's special brand, I get out the tobacconist. Well, I guess it's more so special since the company doesn't really do a lot of business in my country. Either way lovely tobacco and has no additives. German company Pueblo comes dry naturally but is a good smoke. Natural American Spirit is another one I believe but I prefer the Pueblo. Just got a bit nicer taste.

I too use Filters. I am a wet smoker and still a bit of a novice (I started back in around 2017ish but then stepped away and have since returned). I’m also paranoid for my health. I know my risk of cancer won’t go away as long as I’m putting smoke in my mouth, but if I can maximize my chances of removing a big chunk of those carcinogenic materials, I’ll do it.

Though this video was uploaded more than a year ago, I'd like to my leave my little contribution. I've always been using filters since I bought my first pipe and totally agree with you, there're a huge amount of pipe smokers who simply makes you feel like a rookie when talking about that point. Yes, they had the 'theory' of that any kind of filter takes out all the pleasant aroma of pipe tobacco and that a real 'professional' smoker must never use it. The last thing I was told is that filters were invented by germans to smoke their awful aromatic tobaccos!...no words.
That said, I want to mention that the balsa system of almost all Savinelli range are only designed to absorb the moisture, in fact that's the only relevant thing that everyone will notice. I tried to use my pipes without them and felt again that disgusting sensation of being a 'wet smoker', feel so disgusting for can not properly enjoy a good mixture that decided to stop buying more Savinelli pipes. The other kind of filters (cartridges) can be very useful, especially the meerschaum ones, personally I can only use a filter a couple of times and always changing it before the second bowl (let dry the first one, never use it wet). The second kind, are the charcoal ones, just a bit cheaper (I'm talking about bags of 240 pieces) but with these I'd a bad experience, as flavour missing is quite noticeable and they became very wet and dirty just during the first bowl. Trust this info be of any help and thank you for all your uploadings, great channel.

I never enjoyed filters until I discovered the charcoal ones, white elephant I use, it helps a lot for my tongue to not get burnt and also reduces the moisture and cleaning a lot. Depending the mood I take the filter out sometimes but overall it’s very good to have the option.. say if I’m reading or studying and know I’ll be using my pipe for a while filter smooths the whole time.. if I’m gonna be chopping wood or something that I want the tobacco “kick” to get goin’ I don’t use filters.

Savinelli has also 9mm balsawood filters. These aren't triangular in profile like their 6mm filters but have a rounded profile. I recommend them highly for every pipe with a 9mm filter system as they provide the best of both worlds: Absolutely no loss of taste, as if smoking filterless, yet moisture (and high nicotine in the case of strong tobaccos) is dealt with splendidly.

I know this is an old video - but you have a great library of information on your channel. Now, I have an auto-immune disorder and am prone to lung issues (and yeah, unfortunately, I have to moderate how many pipes I smoke). I find that 9mm (elephant or 'Big Ben' ) filters, plus keystones in the bottom is the best combo for my usually wet smokes (Montreal is very humid all year). I smoke a lot of Nightcap, Germain's rich dark flake and Bob's Chocolate Flake (my regular smokes), all of which I find slightly wet. It helps tremendously and I don't think it harms the taste at all. I am going to be experimenting with natural chalk granules (food grade, non-toxic) as it's significantly cheaper.

I've recently started wet shaving, and the longer process is so much more relaxing than modern shaving methods. It seems that pipe smoking is pretty much along the same lines. I'll continue to watch your videos and suck up all the info and tips that I can.

I like using the 6mm filters, they catch some of the tars and nicotine (maybe even some PG if present (...not sure about that one)) and still let taste and flavor come through. I have 1 pipe that takes 9mm filters and seems to restrict flavor somewhat. I'm sure it'll come in handy with stronger or goopier tobaccos.

I tend to do something weird as a filter. I had an old cotton shirt that i cut small squares out of. It mainly absorbs a lot of moisture. And because it's just a piece of cloth it fits in my corncob pipes

Thanks, Muttonchop, I like your philosophy about relaxing it and enjoying it.
May I though, as a beginner, ask two questions:
    1. I using Lorenzettipipe 9mm filters which got green edge and the white edge, which one should be placed closer to the bowl?
    2. So are all 6mm filters are actually considered to be the same as savinelli filters?
And thanks for the video again.

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  7 років тому +2

the filter goes in with the green edge toward the mouthpiece, and away from the bowl. i have never used any other 6mm filter accept the Savinelli filter, but if there are other 6mm filters out there, then they would be shipped different then the Savinelli one. :) :) :)

OK... once again from an elderly pipe smoking gentleman (who has, sadly, always tended to be a "wet-smoker"), I'm gonna "let the cat outta the bag" here on a LITTLE TRICK that I've used to solve the tongue bite problem for me... and, it just might work for you, so I'll give away this little "trick" to all my "pipe-smoking brethren" free of charge!... To be PERFECTLY HONEST, the COOLEST, DRIEST smoke that this ole dude ever experiences is in using BOTH a 9mm charcoal filter and a 6mm Savinelli balsa filter SIMULTANEOUSLY in a 9mm churchwarden stem (that is: use BOTH at the same time!)!... The balsa filter absorbs all the moisture, which not only eliminates tongue bite, but, also greatly extends the life of the charcoal filter to at least 2 bowls!... And the balsa filter can be rotated (between 3 or 4 fresh balsa filters), so each can completely air-dry... and, after a few uses, can also be rinsed in vodka, dried, and used over and over again as well!... So, here's the deal: I buy the replacement 9mm bent churchwarden stems (Chinese made) on Amazon... which, BTW, fit only SOME of my Danish, German, and Italian 9mm filtered pipes (ones that have a 0.40" O.D. tenon). Of course, after smoking a bowl, you need to push out the 6mm balsa filter with a LONG pipe cleaner (but that also serves to clean the churchwarden stem with each bowl anyway). Some folks might say, "But, doesn't 2 filters detract from the taste of the tobacco?"... Well , to that, all I can say is: "I can certainly still tell (and enjoy) the differences between all the various blends - Peterson EMP, Plum Pudding, Magnum Opus, Mississippi River, Nightcap, Artisan's Blend, Quiet Nights, etc., etc.... and this trick has GREATLY increased my enjoyment of "pipe smoking, and THAT"S what it's all about - right???? Pipe smoking is about your own "personal enjoyment", NOT copy-catting what someone else TELLS you to do!... Ya gotta do what works for you, so also take what this ole boy says with a grain of salt too - BUT... ya might wanna give the "DOUBLE-FILTER IN A CHURCHWARDEN STEM" a try - because ya just MIGHT like it a lot!... Blessings and happy puffing to you!👍

Pipe filters. Step 1-take them out, Step 2- throw them in the trash. Filters are a complete waste of money. 1 dont inhale, 2 prepare your pipe tobacco properly, 3-stop using a wet pipe. Filters serve one purpose. Smoking WET EU area wet blends.

Most German Pipesmokers use The Filter, its rather uncommon to Not use a Filter because it delovers a smoother dryer smoke what Germany prefer.

Also enjoy it however but The Filter ist meant to bei used only once.
You dont want to much moist trapled in your pipe

Hey guys, I just bought my first pipe at an antique shop, and know nothing about them. I had never heard of pipe filters until I searched my pipe. I have a medico imported briar pipe, and want to try it out. Could anyone give me some info. First, before I smoke it can I sterilize it? Do I have to get a filter? I smoke for pleasure, typically one cigar a week or every other week but have been curious about pipes for so long, I'm pretty excited. On a final note, mine has an F stamped in the stem. Is this a year stamp? Any info will be appreciated. Thanks gents.

Dr Perl Jr. Filters are getting hard to find and if found they want a lot of 💰 for a small pack. I have 2 stanwell pipes that use the 9mm. I used to purchase them off pipes and cigars but they longer carry them. They ran about 5 bucks for 100 stanwell wants 10 bucks for 10. I like using them because they offer a smooth smoke. I never reuse the filters because it dose change the taste.

I use a little piece of cotton that I place in the stem of my corncob, it's just absorbs a moisture and tar from the smoke, but it doesn't really affect the taste, don't know if it's OK to use this method, but it works, and surprisingly, despite the fact, that the smoke needs to travel through this piece of cotton, I had no issues with the draw

I roll my own filters out of paper, and it works fairly well. There's some videos on UA-cam that tell you the exact dimensions of paper you need to cut to roll a 9mm filter, but the trick is not rolling it too tight or too loose. Too loose, and you not only defeat the purpose of the filter, but you also risk partial combustion of your filter. Too tight, and of course, you aren't going to get a draw, or if you do, there's very little flavor. I tend to switch these filters out every 1-2 bowls because one sheet of 9.5 x 11in printer paper will make about 3-4 filters.

If taste isn't effective, all should learn to use, if it helps remove nicotine. If you have a medical condition that requires a filter, I say you should stop. I am not a smoker nor have I ever been one. I smoke a cigar on occasion and I have a group of friends that get together and smoke pipes and cigars while enjoying man talk and beverages. I thought I would try pipes. I have 2 corn cobs and would like to have a briar. I use your inhale technique and sipping through mouth and out of nose. I am still trying to taste more than smoke. What type of tobacco would be hard to miss the flavor? I thought a filter would make it worse. I am not a wet smoker and I have straight pipes to help. What happens if I forget to bring my filter? I guess I should leave the filterless device in it always. Slowly making progress.

Used to use some ceramic filters for pipes and those were way too expensive. They crack after a while so I use 1½ regular tobacco filters in my pipe these days and blow them out after every use. I don't like moisture and nasty crap to build up in my pipe. While mold probably wouldn't grow in those chemicals, it still scares me. I let my pipe breath and dry out after every use.

This may seem like a weird question, but should I use a filter when smoking herbal blends? Herbal leaves are somewhat finer than tobacco leaves, so do I need to worry about it getting up into the pipe? Though the one problem with doing that is I may lose a bit of the flavor because it isn’t as strong.. What do you think?

Good video! I like how you titled your playlist, "The Art of Pipesmoking." While there are obviously some things that need to be done right like cleaning and deep cleaning, pipesmoking is mainly an art, not really a science per say. When I started pipesmoking I very quickly found that there are widely divergent opinions about some things, which all deserve consideration but you really have to sort through them all and find the best thing for you personally and not shame others for doing things differently.

I’ve tried a few times to enjoy a pipe. But I think I’m starting wrong. Once I light, I feel the heat even though I don’t draw hard. I get a harsh taste and feel it stays in my mouth for hours. That discourages me. I’m not sure if I’m packing wrong, choosing the wrong tobacco or what. I just can’t seem to get to a point where I feel I’m doing it properly to where I can enjoy it.

I always use a filter. My filters are ghetto as hell, but more importantly, they work. I simply unroll a cotton ball, I tare off a piece as long as the first digit of my pointer finger, I tare that in half, roll the material to fit down my stem, insert, kinda draw it to the end of the stem by sucking it in a little, and I'm ready to go. It's cheap and easy. It doesn't tone down any flavor, but soaks up a lot of moisture. After I'm done smoking, I simply remove the stem and blow the used filter into a trash can and swab the stem out a little with a q-tip.
