I started with pipes only about 10 years ago, one of (in my opinion) first mistakes was joining a bunch of online forums looking for FAQ's etc, the snobbery among some, not all, but some in the communities such as the type you're mocking made me ignore pretty much all online communities till now. I like how you cover some many factors about pipe smoking. Some people have that "ALL OR NOTHING" mentality, but you provide a great deal of comfort to us beginners. You don't look around the room waiting to criticize someone. Instead you show the upmost respect and support for your fellow piper. New pipe smoker. My favorite so far is the moonshine pipes XXX blend. Its very affordable bulk on pipes and cigars. I got 2 ounces and it was about 7 bucks
New pipe smoker. i ordered a relatively cheap starter kit with a pipe (it didnt say what kind, but i know its briarwood by the grain at least), a pipetool, some filters and cleaning tools. My first tobacco is Mac Baren Classic Amber. If anyone has any tobacco recommendations for new pipe smokers, please share.

I smoke my pipe the way I want to. I dip my pipe into the pouch or tin to fill it and I clench my pipe alternating it on both sides of my mouth during the smoke. I also don't worry if I have to light my pipe more than once. As you said, it's not relaxing if it's too much like work when you smoke you're pipe.

Thank you for saying that, and no, I don't even know what bots are. I think I have found a nitch in the UA-cam pipe community, (YTPC). I try to get to the point of my videos right away, I try to keep it short, and I try my hardest to be myself (who you see in my videos, is who you get in person). And most of all I try and treat all the people who subscribe to my channel like they are my friend, because in my mind they are, I also try and answer every comment, and help out where I can. 😃😃😃👍

As a lefty I naturally started smoking on my left side. Now it feels funny on the right. However, if I hold the pipe in my hand I tend to smoke a little more in the front.

It dosen't matter how you clinch your pipe...if somebody's seriously saying which way is the only way to clinch a pipe....that person can't be right minded. Pleasant clip and as always cool & dry smokes mate.

Great video! You're like the sage advice giving, pipe smoking uncle I never had! I myself can't clench for more than a minute or two because I start to salivate like crazy. Drooling into your pipe doesn't make for a pleasant smoking experience. Keep up the good work, bud!

The 320 is my favorite Savinelli shape, and I have several of them, including a Punto Oro 320K that although lovely weighs in at nearly 90 grams. Because I'm a clencher, I no longer purchase any pipe that weighs over 50 grams. The Savinelli 321 is perfect. It has that beautiful 320 shape, but it is smaller, and the two I have eacg weigh about 40 grams.
I wanna be full honest in this one comment. I'm a pretty young chap , I'm 23 years of age... But regardless of my young age i feel like i should share this just as an example ,out of respect for the words of this man. I'm paranoid. I started having a really hard time sleeping ever since i was 8 years old. I don't like surprises , good or bad, i like to map out my life and follow everything according to plan. That has led me to a path of spending a lot of hours (or days) without sleep, but still having the need to rest my mind and bones without compromising the normal course of my life. I am sharing this because this man said something which i believe to be extremely important and should not go unnoticed , which is the reason for smoking pipe , that being relaxation and contemplation of thought. If i were to spend my nights of smoke and thoughts worrying about the way i smoke being the correct one or not, that would have seriously affected my whole sense of being as a person, both physically and psychologically, in a negative way. You should really only focus on your own satisfaction with yourselves and your actions, gentlemen. That is all i wish to say. Cheers, and thank you for the video.

I'm right handed, but I smoke left handed because I got my start smoking cigarettes while driving around with my left arm resting on my rolled down window sill in traffic so I can flick the ash and the butt out the window naturally while my dominant hand works the steering wheel or the gear shifter, rather than smoking right handed/steering left handed and having to reach over across my body and over or under my steering arm to ash the cigarette. And if I'm drawing a picture or doing any kind of work, it's gonna be with my right hand so my left hand takes the cigarette/cigar/pipe when necessary. Also, I prefer to work lighters and matches with my dominant right hand which puts the cigarette/cigar/pipe handling in my non dominant left hand.
Derek Moore - that's good my friend, I am also right handed, but in my case I clench on my right side, and hold the pipe with my right hand, the left hand only comes into play when I hold the pipe to light it. Thanks for your comment my friend. 👍👍👍

I don't quite like to clench my pipe with my teeth, i'm more of a "hand holder" so to speak 😂 I like the feeling of holding the thing in my hand, it gives me more of the relaxing feeling I'm looking for (and if counts for anything, it gives me a cooler vibe, but that's beyond the subject I think). As for the smoking itself....well, I like to keep my middle. ring and pinky fingers bent with the pipe resting on the middle finger itself. Index usually "hugs" the body while thumb rests on the "bending" of the pipe if you know what I mean. I also like to usually keep the mouthpiece between my lips, on the left angle of my mouth, lightly clenching with my teeth and gently "sucking" smoke until I feel the flavor on my tongue, then slowly exhaling it
I use breath method but if I have a great tobacco, my puffs are longer and quicker. I love those flavors. Plum pudding anyone? This is the baseline level of comparison. Anyone have another good one for me to try?
Ones i read about the fact that during the WW1, some soldiers in the trenches use to smoke the little cigars with the brace inside the mouth, because of the snipers.Dont know if it was true, but i love those little ways to smoke differently .You make the joke of the pipe upsidedown, but my grandfather ones told me that here in Italy, many people smoked with the pipe upsidedown to be able to smoke under a light rain. You are right, veryone should be feel free to smoke as they prefer! Greetings from italy!
I've grown to love the pipe bits. The rubber things you put on pipe stems. I hated them at first but I've grown to like them, they keep teeth marks off of my stems when I do clench, and keep oxidation at bay.

You scared me there at first. I clench it on the LEFT side of my mouth. And the reason why, in my living room the airflow blows from my right side, so clenching on the right side of my face blows the smoke in my face. So i naturally just place it on my left side. So just out of habit at this point, even when im outside, i always clench on my left side. So i guess thats the way it is for me
Only time I've ever seen anyone smoke a pipe upside down was whenever they were working or fishing in heavy rain. Me included LOL but if I go out fishing on the ocean I usually use a billiard because it's a straight stem
I used to clench when I was younger. Severely damaged vulcanite stems now I have upper and lower dentures and can’t clench. Since I cannot smoke at work I just hold the pipe in my hand when I smoke at home.
Muttonchop has the right attitude about this. Whatever works for you. Personally I tend to hold my pipe with my left hand and thus hold it in the left side of my mouth when I need both hands for something, like as I type this. I dont want to leave teeth marks on my stem though and don't care for the soft bits, so I hold it my lips, or at least keep my lips in between my teeth and my stem. It looks just fine, and frankly I wouldn't care if it didn't.
Perhaps a better title would be "Factors that affect clenching", after rewatching the video several times, I have still not heard where you explain how to clench the pipe. Good advice on mouth heath and weight though.
Wonderful video! So far I have yet to get a talking to from anyone about "the right way", in person at least. Good advise on not shouting poppycock, besides, I much prefer "up your nose with a rubber hose". ;)
I clench my pipe on the left side of my mouth where my canine tooth would be, but i don't have the tooth on the left side. I can't find a comfortable way to hold it on the right side. But holding it upside down in the front of my mouth is surprisingly comfortable.
I got a filling on my right side that does not agree with clenching. So I clench left even tho I smoke right handed. I never even considered that I could be doing something wrong. Thanks for the laugh at the beginning!
Haha, i almost skipped this video listening to the first minute. Glad i stayed. I only clench on the left side if i need both hands for a moment, otherwise i set it down. I have had people tell me different but there not me so i don't care.
Excellent as always. I have poor dentition with many missing teeth (medical reasons) so as I have grown into the pipe world, I'm increasingly finding that I clench less and hold more. When I'm driving I have to be handsfree so it's a cheap cob and I chew the merry hell out of it. When at home, holding the bowl encourages me to clench with my lips if at all, keep the teeth away. Benefits: gentler draw, encourages sipping, encourages me to take the pipe away periodically rather than constantly chuffing on it, causes less damage by chewing on the bits of increasingly expensive pipes - and, holding it helps me keep a check on whether it is getting too warm. Clenching by its nature makes my jaws tense up, makes me on edge, makes me have to grip something. No, I'm doing this so I can relax, not get all edgy. So like you suggest, each piper needs to find their zone, but for me it is about pacing myself and holding by hand rather than teeth. If I have to do more relights because I forgot, then perhaps that is a sign I'm relaxing!

Someone not too long ago came up to me when I was smoking my churchwarden and told me I was smoking it wrong, said I have to relight it after every puff and I just thought whaaaa? I said to him pretty sure that’s bongs mate because my pipe doesn’t go out after one puff 😂
Muttnchop Piper it wasn’t only the church warden though, he kept telling me that’s how you’re supposed to smoke all pipes and when I asked him if he smoked a pipe he said no and that he doesn’t need to in order to know how you should smoke one, I just said to him whatever mate you’re talking shite 😂 now if he were a pipe smoker I would’ve been like okaaay that’s weird but good luck with that.

I've been smoking a pipe off and on for 10 years. I appreciate the info that you share. I learn something every time I watch your videos. I am right handed, but because of the way my teeth are I clench my pipe on the left. I cannot stand to have it on the right as it is uncomfortable. I've never heard that there was a proper way to do this. Thanks, keep the info coming!!!
Love to clench "chin-hangers" which lack the force which the bowl exerts on the teeth through the leverage of the stem, especially with the cushion of a beard to absorb pressure. Maybe one of the engineers can do the math for us :)

My reason for smoking a pipe is my wife hates cigarettes!! And if I want to smoke she would rather smell pipe tobacco than nasty cigarettes tobacco(which does stink). And also help me relax more while smoking :) Always remember "HAPPY WIFE,HAPPY LIFE" LOL

As a lefty I naturally started smoking on my left side. Now it feels funny on the right. However, if I hold the pipe in my hand I tend to smoke a little more in the front.

TacticalTupperware - You bet my friend, might I suggest, I have a group of videos called Just the Basics, that you can watch that will teach you how to smoke a pipe from packing to cleaning. Pay close attention to how to smoke a pipe using the Breathe Method, this way of smoking a pipe prevents a lot of problems new pipe smokers tend to suffer through. 👍👍👍

The 320 is my favorite Savinelli shape, and I have several of them, including a Punto Oro 320K that although lovely weighs in at nearly 90 grams. Because I'm a clencher, I no longer purchase any pipe that weighs over 50 grams. The Savinelli 321 is perfect. It has that beautiful 320 shape, but it is smaller, and the two I have eacg weigh about 40 grams.

I wanna be full honest in this one comment. I'm a pretty young chap , I'm 23 years of age... But regardless of my young age i feel like i should share this just as an example ,out of respect for the words of this man. I'm paranoid. I started having a really hard time sleeping ever since i was 8 years old. I don't like surprises , good or bad, i like to map out my life and follow everything according to plan. That has led me to a path of spending a lot of hours (or days) without sleep, but still having the need to rest my mind and bones without compromising the normal course of my life. I am sharing this because this man said something which i believe to be extremely important and should not go unnoticed , which is the reason for smoking pipe , that being relaxation and contemplation of thought. If i were to spend my nights of smoke and thoughts worrying about the way i smoke being the correct one or not, that would have seriously affected my whole sense of being as a person, both physically and psychologically, in a negative way.
You should really only focus on your own satisfaction with yourselves and your actions, gentlemen. That is all i wish to say. Cheers, and thank you for the video.

I'm right handed, but I smoke left handed because I got my start smoking cigarettes while driving around with my left arm resting on my rolled down window sill in traffic so I can flick the ash and the butt out the window naturally while my dominant hand works the steering wheel or the gear shifter, rather than smoking right handed/steering left handed and having to reach over across my body and over or under my steering arm to ash the cigarette. And if I'm drawing a picture or doing any kind of work, it's gonna be with my right hand so my left hand takes the cigarette/cigar/pipe when necessary. Also, I prefer to work lighters and matches with my dominant right hand which puts the cigarette/cigar/pipe handling in my non dominant left hand.
Derek Moore - that's good my friend, I am also right handed, but in my case I clench on my right side, and hold the pipe with my right hand, the left hand only comes into play when I hold the pipe to light it. Thanks for your comment my friend. 👍👍👍

I don't quite like to clench my pipe with my teeth, i'm more of a "hand holder" so to speak 😂 I like the feeling of holding the thing in my hand, it gives me more of the relaxing feeling I'm looking for (and if counts for anything, it gives me a cooler vibe, but that's beyond the subject I think). As for the smoking itself....well, I like to keep my middle. ring and pinky fingers bent with the pipe resting on the middle finger itself. Index usually "hugs" the body while thumb rests on the "bending" of the pipe if you know what I mean. I also like to usually keep the mouthpiece between my lips, on the left angle of my mouth, lightly clenching with my teeth and gently "sucking" smoke until I feel the flavor on my tongue, then slowly exhaling it
Being precise and even suggesting there's a right and a wrong way to get mouth/lip cancers...I find smoking tips laughable...

I use breath method but if I have a great tobacco, my puffs are longer and quicker. I love those flavors. Plum pudding anyone? This is the baseline level of comparison. Anyone have another good one for me to try?
Ones i read about the fact that during the WW1, some soldiers in the trenches use to smoke the little cigars with the brace inside the mouth, because of the snipers.Dont know if it was true, but i love those little ways to smoke differently .You make the joke of the pipe upsidedown, but my grandfather ones told me that here in Italy, many people smoked with the pipe upsidedown to be able to smoke under a light rain. You are right, veryone should be feel free to smoke as they prefer! Greetings from italy!
I've grown to love the pipe bits. The rubber things you put on pipe stems. I hated them at first but I've grown to like them, they keep teeth marks off of my stems when I do clench, and keep oxidation at bay.

You scared me there at first. I clench it on the LEFT side of my mouth. And the reason why, in my living room the airflow blows from my right side, so clenching on the right side of my face blows the smoke in my face. So i naturally just place it on my left side. So just out of habit at this point, even when im outside, i always clench on my left side. So i guess thats the way it is for me

Only time I've ever seen anyone smoke a pipe upside down was whenever they were working or fishing in heavy rain. Me included LOL but if I go out fishing on the ocean I usually use a billiard because it's a straight stem
I used to clench when I was younger. Severely damaged vulcanite stems now I have upper and lower dentures and can’t clench. Since I cannot smoke at work I just hold the pipe in my hand when I smoke at home.

Muttonchop has the right attitude about this. Whatever works for you. Personally I tend to hold my pipe with my left hand and thus hold it in the left side of my mouth when I need both hands for something, like as I type this. I dont want to leave teeth marks on my stem though and don't care for the soft bits, so I hold it my lips, or at least keep my lips in between my teeth and my stem. It looks just fine, and frankly I wouldn't care if it didn't.
Perhaps a better title would be "Factors that affect clenching", after rewatching the video several times, I have still not heard where you explain how to clench the pipe. Good advice on mouth heath and weight though.

I clench my pipe on the left side of my mouth where my canine tooth would be, but i don't have the tooth on the left side. I can't find a comfortable way to hold it on the right side. But holding it upside down in the front of my mouth is surprisingly comfortable.
I got a filling on my right side that does not agree with clenching. So I clench left even tho I smoke right handed. I never even considered that I could be doing something wrong. Thanks for the laugh at the beginning!
Haha, i almost skipped this video listening to the first minute. Glad i stayed. I only clench on the left side if i need both hands for a moment, otherwise i set it down. I have had people tell me different but there not me so i don't care.

Personally, I'm a fan of the "fuck off and mind your own business" method.
Excellent as always. I have poor dentition with many missing teeth (medical reasons) so as I have grown into the pipe world, I'm increasingly finding that I clench less and hold more. When I'm driving I have to be handsfree so it's a cheap cob and I chew the merry hell out of it. When at home, holding the bowl encourages me to clench with my lips if at all, keep the teeth away. Benefits: gentler draw, encourages sipping, encourages me to take the pipe away periodically rather than constantly chuffing on it, causes less damage by chewing on the bits of increasingly expensive pipes - and, holding it helps me keep a check on whether it is getting too warm. Clenching by its nature makes my jaws tense up, makes me on edge, makes me have to grip something. No, I'm doing this so I can relax, not get all edgy.
So like you suggest, each piper needs to find their zone, but for me it is about pacing myself and holding by hand rather than teeth. If I have to do more relights because I forgot, then perhaps that is a sign I'm relaxing!

Someone not too long ago came up to me when I was smoking my churchwarden and told me I was smoking it wrong, said I have to relight it after every puff and I just thought whaaaa? I said to him pretty sure that’s bongs mate because my pipe doesn’t go out after one puff 😂

As I've gotten older I like a lighter pipe and as you I tend to hold the heaver ones. In fact my teeth are worn down on the right side.
I've been smoking a pipe off and on for 10 years. I appreciate the info that you share. I learn something every time I watch your videos. I am right handed, but because of the way my teeth are I clench my pipe on the left. I cannot stand to have it on the right as it is uncomfortable. I look like I have rabies after 2 mins of clenching a pipe.
Love to clench "chin-hangers" which lack the force which the bowl exerts on the teeth through the leverage of the stem, especially with the cushion of a beard to absorb pressure. Maybe one of the engineers can do the math for us :)

My reason for smoking a pipe is my wife hates cigarettes!! And if I want to smoke she would rather smell pipe tobacco than nasty cigarettes tobacco(which does stink). And also help me relax more while smoking :) Always remember "HAPPY WIFE,HAPPY LIFE" LOL
mike hillard - plus you will find that pipe tobacco doesn’t cling to your clothes like cigarette smoke, and another thing about pipe smoking is I have been smoking in my little smoking lounge for years and non of my walls are discolored. 👍👍👍
