"I wish I could go to Afghanistan once again"...How many soldiers, from even before Alexander's era of conquest, have said the same exact sentence after their service, doing their part as literal kids, not knowing anything but war after it ends? How many of their mates lay dug in that dry, sandy and stony soil. Afghanistan has that unique sort of a zing to it. Unique only to it. It's not Chechnya, not Vietnam, not South America or Asia, not Iraq, not Balkans, not Europe. Completely different, from both the soldiers' perspectives and actual military goals. A shithole of Biblical proportions, good for nothing but dying and dying alone. I love Kipling's poem verses. "When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains, and the women come out to cut up what remains, jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains and go to your gawd like a soldier." A dusty, hot hovel for soldiers to die in, for countries and empires to gradually crumble away after not having anything else to invade.
To be honest, I think the closest thing to Afghanistan was Vietnam. Both wars had this feeling of nonsense, of constant fear and melancholy. The Russians were resigned and became melancholic of the Graveyard of Empires, while the Americans protested the war and became savages. Despite being mostly desertic, Afghanistan feels cold and isolated, while Vietnam is lush and smothering with its humidity and napalm. I don't know if there's such a video, but a discussion between veterans from Vietnam and Afghanistan would be incredible: Similar experiences of pointless imperialist wars against a people armed by their enemies, yet two very different settings and feelings.
Btw. Afghanistan isn't all stones and desert. Only the south and that too some areas. It's mostly mountainous and very rugged but there is much greenery and pine forests to be found especially with the pakistani border.

It reminds me of a scene from a movie. After a battle between white army and red army, soldier asks the priest if they should bury reds with whites and priest replies that God didn't paint them different colors.
