      BS junk. The dash and seating arrangement are easy to get right. I have a 308 and it took me 5 minutes to get the right driving position, and all the dash ws easily seen, and the small steering wheel encourages better control. WTF why you want to sit low is beyond me, as this not the way to be able to observe what is around you.

    I have this car and love it. It's not designed for the race track. The little engine works brilliantly and you simply need to adjust the steering wheel and the seat height to solve the icockpit 'problem' . Boot is cavernous. Very comfortable and well equipped. That was a very childish review.

  • @marcuswoodgate4026

      @AndrewSowerby 3 місяці тому +2

      @@niceboy60 yes, I've pointed out in several other replies that the reviewers were being rather ignorant. The engine is perfectly capable. It hauls the 3008 , which is the same weight, very well. 130bhp, 230Nm torque and 0-60mph of 10.1s, all with realmpg of 38mpg (due to the EAT8 - if it was a manual, that would be about 42mpg).
      It's very, very impressive. If only they didn't have that wet belt, there would be no marks against it. Even then, if you do the required oil changes well within schedule and keep an eye on the condition of that belt and change it as soon as there's any sign of cracking, that's not such a huge issue. Sometimes people do get bitten despite trying to do everything right, but that's quite rare from what I understand.

      @obsidian.... Місяць тому

      Outside of Europe it comes with a 1.6L 4 Cylinder (non hybrid) with 215hp. That is the best version by far. It's unfortunate that isn't even an option for you 🫤@@AndrewSowerby

  • @stephandolby
    @stephandolby 3 місяці тому +21

    I know it's "only" a 1.2 with 130hp, but let's be fair, about 15 years ago you needed a 2.0 diesel to get similar horsepower, and you paid a weight penalty.
    Also, 3:04 - adjust the reach of the steering wheel a bit, maybe?

    • @AndrewSowerby
      @AndrewSowerby 3 місяці тому +4

      @@stephandolby yes exactly. There are lots of larger petrols (1.4, 1.5 etc.) that still don't produce 130bhp and nothing like 230Nm or torque. You can get the Ateca/Karoq/Tiguan with a 1.0 TSI 110bhp if you want to be really silly. It's a shame Peugeot dropped some of the older engine options from this 408 in the UK and Ireland. The DW10 2.0 HDI would be great in this thing if you wanted a motorway mile muncher. Or maybe the 1.6 petrol for a more gutsy performance. Instead, you only have the 1.2 MHEV 136HP and the PHEV, which comes with a serious handling penalty due to all the extra weight.
      Sorry to say, but the 3008 was better, with more engine options and, oddly, better handling results in the moose test. This 408 only matches a Golf, which is rather poor, whereas the 3008 defies physics and beats most *cars*, nevermind SUVs.

    Their driving Skills are impressive however they have no Clue how engines Work 🤷🤦
    1 - Engine Size is irrelevant
    2- What is irrelevant is Engine Torque
    3- And Horse Power
    .
    this 1.2 Engine is a bit low on HP however it's 130 hp it's still more than Toyota 1.8L 120HP
    Where this Engine Shines is Torque , Pulling Power Toyota 1.8 Has 104ft this 1.2 Engine has 170ft Pulling Power is what pulls Trucks uphill with heavy loads even Toyota 2.0L Has Lower top speed & only has around 140ft pulling power

    Hey FIFTH GEAR, your review exposes that you are not competent in your business.
    This Peugeot 408 is a formidable car.
    You don't get how a car engine works. It's not size that matters, it's torque and horse power. This 1.2L Peugeot engine develops very good power for its size (170 feet pulling power, max speed 130 mph).
    Don't judge a car engine on its size.
    Judge it on its performance ! ALWAYS !
    Tech has improved so much that now, even a "small engine" of 1.2 L develops more than power than a mid size engine (2.0 L) of 10 years ago.
    It's really important to understand that. That car is NOT under powered. It's just that its "small engine" really is performant.
    I worked 27 years as a Performance Engineer for VW Group (14 years for Audi), it baffles me that you don't understand that.

    I cannot think of a bigger act of self sabotage than the engines in this car and indeed the 508. Its such a lovely car outside and in. I've seen one in the metal but it's hobbled by that daft motor and actually, while the design of the interior is amazing the material and build quality is rather shoddy. For me the best car they make is the 208 with this same engine and even there it has the chassis to take much more. I don't have too much a problem with the steering though. I actually can see over the top and its rather nice and open not to be blinkered by the rim of the steering wheel.
    I honestly would have bought this car, build quality and all if had a better motor. But as is, its a miss.

      Late 2022 / early 2023 going by the car’s registration number. Personally I couldn't live with any current Peugeot with that stupid small steering wheel, that is flat at the top & bottom, rather than completely round!

    It was on my list, because i love the design, but the engine selection is bad. 3-cyl 1.2....then a huuuge price jump and a plug in hybrid. Such a shame.

      I own 408 as company car with 1.2, my wife has 5008 Gt with 2.0hdi, in my garage i have another 3 weekend toys, Civic type r 2.0, Alfa GT 3.2 V6 busso, and Maserati Granturismo S 4.7 V8 F1. If you look for an allrounder that will not disappoint you and gives you feel special on the road 408 1.2 does the job(nobody sees the 3cyl from the outside and the overall dynamics does not tell it either). Commuting to the job, making vacations with family of 4 not an issue at all, I love it. The engine is enough even for higher highway speeds, spins 2400rpm at 140kph. And the car is super silent inside(even has double glazing) actually its the first car in my life i listen to the music. I would only recommend to go for the mild hybrid cause it has timing chain instead of belt and mild electric thats +- same price makes it even more silent in the city

    Get rid of the third wheel, keep those two decent drivers and experienced hosts.
    Dude's worried about not being able to read instrument cluster while having steering lock on?
    You've got two great drivers and you put them both in passenger gear seats?
    Wondering why your production isn't getting top gear, um, traction?
