LYRICS
If it weren't for your maturity none of this would have happened
If you weren't so wise beyond your years I would've been able to control myself
If it weren't for my attention you wouldn't have been successful and
If it weren't for me you would never have amounted to very much
Ooh this could be messy
But you don't seem to mind
Ooh don't go telling everybody
And overlook this supposed crime
We'll fast forward to a few years later
And no one knows except the both of us
And I have honored your request for silence
And you've washed your hands clean of this
You're essentially an employee and I like you having to depend on me
You're a kind of my protégé and one day you'll say you learned all you know from me
I know you depend on me like a young thing would to a guardian
I know you sexualize me like a young thing would and I think I like it
Ooh this could get messy
But you don't seem to mind
Ooh don't go telling everybody
And overlook this supposed crime
We'll fast forward to a few years later
And no one knows except the both of us
I've more than honored your request for silence
And you've washed your hands clean of this
What part of our history's reinvented and under rug swept?
What part of your memory is selective and tends to forget?
What with this distance it seems so obvious?
Just make sure you don't tell on me especially to members of your family
We best keep this to ourselves and not tell any members of our inner posse
I wish I could tell the world cause you're such a pretty thing when you're done up properly
I might want to marry you one day if you watch that weight and keep your firm body
Ooh this could be messy and
Ooh I don't seem to mind
Ooh don't go telling everybody
And overlook this supposed crime
This song so perfectly captures the pain of being a teenage girl that is exploited. Nearly a decade before the me-too moment, Alanis was so ahead of her time
Yes but Alanis had an edge over her older lover. She was not a victim.

U probably saved yourself, listening to Alanis. ❤
I was one of those teenagers singing along to this radio hit back then, not understanding. Alanis, I understand now and I’m sorry. Thank you for sharing your story and art.
Same here... I was a VERY sheltered 14-year old when this album came out (2002), and while I LOVED that album overall (and it holds up incredibly well, to tis day) - the lyrics to this particular just flew over my head, and while it's obviously a blessing that it wasn't something I could instantly relate to and understand back then... I'm also sad that I didn't understand what she was really trying to say. I also didn't have cable TV (and UA-cam didn't exist until 2006, for any younger gens reading this lol), so I also didn't see the music video until Covid happened - which I'm sure would've opened my eyes a bit more to how dark the song actually was... but because I didn't see that, I just didn't "get" the song - in fact, I remember feeling weirded out about it because I took the song at face-value and thought she was singing from her own pov about a relationship with a younger man (I didn't pick up on the p*do implications in the song, so I thought she was singing about some younger man in a more... really creepy, shallow, immature, power-dynamic-sounds-like-a-lawsuit-about-to-happen kind of way that still made me wildly uncomfortable all on its own), which VERY much confused me because that _seemed_ so out-of-character for her...? But, yeah... the backstory and real meaning of the song was just totally lost on HS freshmen me, unfortunately, so I almost always skipped this song... I feel really bad about how I misinterpreted that song (and, by extension, her character) now, even though I was wise enough to kept those _very_ unverified assumptions to myself (in fact, this is the first time I've ever said any of that to literally anyone).
Literally 20 years later and finally knowing what I know about it now, this song is *_incredibly_* well done.
@@ember-brandt I agree and I HAD seen the video back then! It’s amazing how our perspective changes with time. I finally got to see Alanis last summer and it meant the world to me.

These lyrics are hard to sing at the speed that she sings them, and she does it with such clarity that all the words come out clearly and distinctly, on top of being an incredible lyricist. Her lung capacity must be unreal
Agree. I once sang this live and I was utterly terrified of mispronouncing the lyrics!
I secretly believe Alanis is the human embodiment of Terpsichore.
No one should be able to squeeze this many words into one line, but Alanis does it so seamlessly.
Lyricists: Alanis you can't do that.
Alanis: Watch me.

She is just fantastic. What energy, what feelings, what awareness and presence! She's just beautiful.
She talked about this song in a video as a conversation back and forth between her and the man who committed statutory rape. So some of the lyrics are what he said to her and some are what she said/ would say to him. Incredible song really.
The biggest, and most typical part is, that when it was released - This was a brilliant good song plus great video! Yet, no one really got the words she said. This had heavy rotation!

I sort of always liked the mixed feelings this song gives me. It's so beautiful but with an unsettling story. Its so mixed up. I was madly in love with a girl for 10 years but I did get with her when she was a year underage and I was 2 years older. She was mature and smart and I get that part of the song but I knew it was still wrong.

Derek Rasmussen That is a fucking awesome compliment :D :D:D:D well done man! Well Done!
Fuck yeah dude your the man
Sorry guys I was like number 70 :/
In my opinion, the best song Alanis has ever written. More melodic, more mature, and certainly more poignant than "Right Through You" from Jagged Little Pill.
i mean, is that really true for you? Right Through You was a scathing no-holds-barred indictment, Hands Clean is a fairly passive-aggressive confession. it packs one of of my favorite punches, but i wouldn't view the latter to be more 'mature' than the former, psychologically speaking. screaming the monkey off your back certainly feels better than a decade of therapy about what you subtly slipped in under a pristine pop radar. the melody tho? oh god yes. i think Hands Clean is one of pop music's most underrated true gems.
I won't deny that the melody matched with the rhythm is incredibly catchy, but why is no one mentioning that this song is clearly about an older woman's relationship with a younger/underage boy? Lol
@@cloudambient cause it isn't? Its about a young girl and an older man.
@@jessicam8112 that's kinda interesting that we both listened to the same thing and had different reactions. I wonder why this is called art and not math?
Her first 3 albums are masterpieces. I live for all those 90s female singer/songwriters.
There are SO many great 90's women singer/songwriters. Now, it's mostly barren.
Just heard this on the radio again after so long. How is it sooo good? ❤❤❤❤

For those interested, Alanis wrote this about a clandestine sexual relationship she had with her producer Leslie Howe from ages of 14-19. This was her way of healing, writing this song.
Yes you daid it better than i. She was in the #metoo long ago. Thank you for naming him.
I love the video because she's talking about the secret and showing the song being sent all over the world. Love the line "ohh this could get messy" (but she is exposing it regardless) I love it! I love her.
A more detailed story:
It is about Alanis' relationship with her former manager, Leslie Howe. Alanis was 14 and he was 29. He manipulating her into thinking that if she slept with him, she would become famous. It lasted until she was 19.
The verses are told from Leslie's perspective while the chorus is from Alanis' perspective.
I've looked into this. I haven't seen any confirmation, from her or anyone else, that Leslie Howe is the subject of the song. In fact, I haven't even been able to find anything tangential. At best, some people have speculated about it, but I have yet to see anything remotely resembling a concrete link.
If I'm being frank, I could very well see it being him. It sounds perfectly plausible, and I wouldn't be surprised. That said, if you don't have anything more than conjecture, that's a pretty serious allegation to be making.
Are you sure she’s not talking about a friend of her father ?
For me this is still one of the greatest Songs about abuse. With this Song she gives many many people a voice.
She actually gives her abuser credit for what he had done for her & her career but at what cost??? Power can take away human decency I swear...
@@danagraslie5718 And, often, the true impact of the abuse may not manifest for many, many years!
@@scottlosey4978 This is very true...

A song warning us how to look out for the predators of sexual abuse and harassment. And the psychological power games by the perpetrator on the victim.
I loved this song back when it came out. I never paid too much attention to the lyrics when I heard it as a 16 year old, but now I'm definitely LISTENING. Her ability to write about really DARK subject matter and frame it with really light pop melodies is pretty unique. She's always so raw and honest.

Unfortunately some of us did understand what this was about when we were young.
Great song, but the lyrics are extremely powerful. An older man tells her that without him, she wouldn't have amounted to anything, yet he washes his hands clean (absolves himself of responsibility) for having a relationship with a minor. He puts it all on her for "tempting him" and expects her silence so he won't get in trouble. When Alanis came forward recently about being a victim of statutory rape as a teenager it really put this song in perspective.

Same here. I realized only a few years ago that this was about a pedo. Coupled with her songs "Perfect," and "That I would be good," it's plain to see.
My favorite song of one of the most underrated artists who has ever lived. Legendary
So true
She's amazing but I don't really think she's "underrated". She sold millions of albums worldwide. And she's still pretty popular until today.
UNDERrated? haha, she's quite legendary actually.
According to Warner Music Japan, she sold over 60,000,000 albums worldwide, including 20,500,000 in the United States and 3,820,000 in the United Kingdom. The best-selling album by her is 'Jagged little Pill', which sold over 33,000,000 copies . That is not even CLOSE to anything underrated
She's not underrated, she was one of the biggest female artists of the late 90s. She's not much into the spotlight nowadays because music preferences have changed.
Um she wasn't underrated when this album came out, I remember from my High School days people couldn't wait to see her in concert .
Alanis, I always heard this song, but now I feel it.
I feel really sad that you had to go through such suffering.
If you ever read this: We wish you the best.
Something that I never noticed is that the voices from the verses sections (old guy- young woman) can be exchangable. Althought it seemed very obvious that is the voice of an older guy, I always listened as how the young girl saw herself as "powerful" at the moment. To me, it sounds like she is singing from her own "inmaturity", as how she felt that it was her giving him power. That, to me, give the chorus much more power and even a sarcastic tone of superiority.
Damn, this is a killer song.
The title popped up on my UA-cam, I recognize the title, but couldn’t remember the song. I forgot how great it was.

@@user-wc7mo2io9z - not all the words do. There's two voices, though she sings them both: his and hers. Though to make it into a song it's still a persona even though it it's personal because I'm reading here it did happen. And it happens to a lot of people.
"I wish I could tell the world cause you're such a pretty thing when you're done up properly" - this line is too creepy to be a hackneyed cliche and you wouldn't expect it to be actually definitive or common but all parts of that are indeed the raw truth. Even when other men now are like 'ooo make up is mis-selling' and still some others, men and women, are like 'harlotry! you deserve everything!' - there's so much where there's someone to pull you down in pretty scary ways whatever you do or whatever the justice of it. I love hearing true singer/songwriter’s. She’s amazing. I miss this time period in life.
Raw talent, raw emotion.....amazing bass and guitar rifts. This woman puts 98% of the female "artists" to shame. I salute you Alanis. This is my favorite song of Alanis
When I was young I didn't like her, now I absolutely love her. She's my favorite female artist of all time. Weird how that happened.
SuperLastMohican changes of heart are a sign of high intelligence (-:
It happened like that because Alanis was a real artist that needs a few listen throughs to truly appreciate
Isn’t it ironic?
maturity is a hellova thing
Oh my, exactly the same for me! 🙂
Alanis at her peak. The guitar lacing during the chorus and outro are exquisite too.
Indeed
I growth up with this song. Why this lyrics so relate
We'll fast forward to a few years later and
And no one knows except the both of us
I've more than honored your request for silence
This song has such a haunting feel to it. Damn, Alanis knocked it out of the park with this one!
Perhaps her most timeless song. The one that could hit anyone, at any time, in any era.
Wow, this just hit me so hard. Only just realised what a great song this is after all these years. I'd clean forgotten about it until now.
Yep ❤
Such a big fan of hers! Was lucky to have grown up during all the highlights of the biggest part of her career. I still feel she has more to give but owes us nothing. She brought it all! Beautiful on the outside but a beautiful musical mind as well of which I’m sure this is just a glimpse of what makes her shine like a star without the negative stigma the business has brought about. She truly is amazing but I guess I’m just gushing. Could go on and on but I’ll leave this here!
I'll go on for you 😃 She's also a major advocate for post partum depression
I hadn't listened to Alanis for while. With the 25th anniversary of "Jagged Little Pill" I have in a way "re-discovered" her. A reminder of how good she is, as a singer-songwritter, performer and true musician. She has matured like fine wine and is even lovelier this time around. Just got her new album "Such Pretty Forks In The Road", and it's like a return to true form. Glad to be back listening to this amazing woman! ❤️👍👍
This might sound crazy, but my favorite part of this song is during the beautiful bridge where the lyrics start out... "What part of our history, " there is a chilling squeak sound that reminds me of a swing - I love that sound and part.
What does the metaphor "Hands Clean" mean?
+Alisa Karter it means you are forgetting something and not letting it control your life anymore. Like, for example, I am washing my hands clean of my ex
As far as I know, it means getting away with something without receiving punishment, getting away with your hands clean as if you haven't done anything dirty even though you did, got it? :p
Yep. It's the best part of the song!
Michael absolutely
Sending prayers and loves to Alanis and the band of Foo Fighters and the family and crew ❤️🙏🏽😢🥁
This song and even video are just genius. How many of us see things like this happening in front of our face but still can't or won't see it.
Excellent lead single from my favorite Alanis album. The album still had her youthful '90s "alternative" sound, but this time delivered with more balance and beauty.
Alanis was such a trail blazer of the time. She sang brutally honest lyrics and sang from the soul. Been a fan of hers since 1994 and I frequently come back to her music when I’m doing my own soul searching.
15 year old me absolutely understood the synopsis.thank you alanis.
It happened to me too💐🫂
Here vocal style is so unique, great voice, great songwriting, great music! I go back to the 60s, so many favorite bands! But she kept me interested in the 90s, along with pearl jam, Alice in chains, tool, and radio head.
The 90's were the best, hands down.
jamie bartle You realize this song came out in 2002, yes?
Joe Cole yeah but the video is set in mostly flashbacks and got a 90s vibe
jamie bartle 2002
Kryssi K Just admit you thought it came out in the 90s
