  • Led Zeppelin's MISTY MOUNTAIN HOP INTRO!
TAKE A MIND BEND INTO DELICIOUS JOHN BONHAM FILLDOM!!!!!!!!!
*IMPORTANT please see: • RE: THE MISTY MOUNTAI...
Although it has no bearing on the MMH PARALLAX significance, I did play the actual drum pattern UNTRUE (in beat content, not location) to the studio recording.
To see it properly please click on link above or here: • RE: THE MISTY MOUNTAI...

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about with Misty Mountain Hop. Sometimes when I've tried to play it, my brain will do the exact thing you said and I'll majorly screw up the intro. Great video by the way. Keep 'em coming!

the way the light only shows you and the background a bit darker, this whole video looked like a old Rembrandt painting

You really are the most enlightening drum instructor. I have been playing drums for over 30 years and I always learn something from you regarding these Zep songs and Bonham's technique. You are a drum shaman...no, perhaps sherpa of figuring these drum patterns out. Keep it up and thanks.

I remember the same rhythmic displacement being used in 'Spirits in the Material World' by the Police also 'Let the Good Times Roll' by The Cars. Our brains are always looking for patterns to make sense of the world. As I understand, our ears are even better at noticing subtle changes than our eyes.

I watched this video last night, and tried to listen to it like this, but I couldn't. I've had it in my head all morning, so I started playing it, and what you were saying totally clicked. It's freaking awesome.

Terry, I was fascinated with your idea of auditory parallax, that LZ do so well. A few mins googling came up with the terms Shifted Accent or Shifted Pulse. You can argue for either one on their intros that bring the "Big, fat, Zeppelin-y beefcake" and also I love the metaphor of His Majesty arriving just a little bit late. It fills one with that feeling of power. That is why I love to $@!&# to LZ!

new camera looks great, Terry!! I totally get what you're saying, though. I remember the first time I heard the song I remember hearing the song start on the 1, like you're mentioning. The drum fill totally blew my mind. I haven't listened to it recently in that way, I'll have to do that now!

I've always heard the intro riff of Deep Purple's "Maybe I'm a Leo" as starting on the "One" and then at around the 13 second mark, when the Riff repeats, I hear it as starting on the "and" of One!
It's great because I now have two great Guitar riffs to play instead of one Ha ha!

What makes it more confusing is the guitar: page plays a note on the and of 4 and then that note is tied to the one of the next bar.

Hello...I know you were talking about a specific guitarist.....from the tribute band Prezence. (name withheld for privacy reasons) I am also from Chicago and played with their bassist for a very long time. I have since moved to Fargo, ND..but I am sure we share many of the same friends, bands and clubs. I have been playing drums for 43 years now myself.

And on the subject of "Parallax intros", I've always had a similar experience with "Hold On Loosely" by .38 Special. Even after hearing it so many times, the pickup note always feels like a 1 beat at first.

  • @lukessummerguitar
    @lukessummerguitar 8 років тому

and of course the classic "half beat removed" song is Jimi Hendrix's All along the watchtower - that intro is hard to nail down

I KNOW exactly what your talking about but to compare your livingroom ceiling to the moon surface.................. don't you really mean the studio where the moon landings were filmed surface? it was you who brought up the subject more then once about the apollo missions. they did'nt go.

18 minutes on this topic? You must get paid by the hour! (just messin' with ya!) YES does this alot. One that really screws with your head is the song BIG GENERATOR - with all those vocals in the intro. One of many in the Yes catalog.

I get it. I've made the same mistake on several other songs, too (not only LZ). What about flipping through the radio and stop on a familiar song that sounds different to you, because of how you first heard it. Idk. It's happened to me. Thanks

Dave Grohl talks about Bonzo being behind the beat; is it similar to that? I can definitely hear what you're talking about.
EDIT: you addressed it around 11:30! haha.

Hi Terry, from one drum hoarder to another, my hoarding is in it's infancy and I don't wish for a cure, what other bs could i waste my money rather than get happy with things i care for and get engrossed in? your videos are the best, fun and informative and i spread the word for this page as when possible. thanks for the great work and I'll order one of those cd's dvd? this week. what was the name of that book you showed I think by the guy from the wrecking crew, Hal Blain was it? anywho, great show man keep 'em coming.

+Mark Doney-Mccloud Thank you, Mark! I really appreciate your support.
The book was either the 'Hal Blaine & The Wrecking Crew', or Hartman's 'The Wrecking Crew'.

I'll send you a picture of one of my kits, the one in the living room right now, and the reason I'm moving to a house with more rooms to turn one into a drum-room/studio and soundproof the hell out it - how's moxy? didn't hear her in the last vt...lol, take care man you're cool!!
