If tamburello and villenueve weren't changed, imagine the cars flat out from ravazza through Tamb and Vill and braking hard into Tosa! Ps I missed today's race rip strolls mechanic
Surprisingly my favorite layout of Imola is the 2001 layout. Really enjoy that chicane at the start of the main straight because I feel it makes it more challenging to get a good run down the straight.
I actually prefer the new Imola. Those so-called chicanes a Tamburello and Villeneuve are a blast to drive through. Keeps you much more on your toes than the easy flat sweepers of the 80's (in high downforce cars at least)
If I could pick and mix I would get the early 2000s version without the last chicane. The track limits were far more clear (narrower curbs, grass right next, no need for yellow bumps). Also Variante Alta was awesome when it was faster but had higher curbs.
@@dyr_glpsn4209 Yeah the old Alta was spectacular on TV with slow-motion replays of cars hopping over the curbs! While I'd have liked to see a longer straight into Tosa before, I have to say that Villeneuve has grown on me as one of the more unique of chicanes, and now we have of course that longer start/finish straight anyway.
The new layout is great to drive around, but the racing was seriously bad, which I think could only be improved with drastic changes such as removing the Villeneuve and Alta chicanes
What annoys me about Imola (and Monza) is the obsession with adding chicanes to make the track safer, instead of employing more creativity. A prime example is Villeneuve. In my opinion there's no safety related reason for its existence and it messes up the flow of the track. My ideal version of the track would involve Villeneuve being deleted and Acque Minerale becoming a double apex banked corner.
The chicane at Villeneuve needs to be there, at least for motorcycles, because there is no way to widen the run off area, since the track passes over a bridge immediately after the corner
Ewww Acque Minerale is one of the best corners ever and you wanna make it a banked corner and ruin the challenge? Plus with Villeneuve the track becomes even more simple. This track is at its best from 2001 onwards
oh so you mean ruining one of the best corners in motorsport?... Imola hosts more races than just F1. and if you think chicanes for safety today is bad, you clearly missed the part where he drove around the 80's layout....
· The Tamburello variante is alright but maybe a bit too fast · The Villeneuve variante could probably be deleted (I know there's not much run-off in Tosa) · The Variante Alta could probably be made more symmetrical, never liked it when a chicane is slower on exit than on entry · The lack of Variante Bassa is more than welcomed
The thing is that FIA introduced more chicanes and more chicanes on the tracks while the cars got stronger and glued to the tracks improving safety. Senna didn’t die because of the lack of safety but because of a broken steering column on his Williams. Instead of improving the cars the FIA tried to reduced the speed on the tracks. It’s a shame imo that so many tracks got cut. Imola without chicanes would be much more interesting make overtakes easier. And, because of all the safety features now available on the cars and the wide run off areas we could re-introduce speed on these tracks whiteout risking lives.
What i love about the 72 layout, especially (if not entirely because of) in the 75 F1 car, the rivazzas are the fastest with a powerslide in second gear. mmmmmm
At least with Acque Minerali they finally got the idea of sorting out the run-off and putting the corner back to how it should be. If only they'd do the same with Tamburello and Villeneuve.
I've been doing this for ages. It was super cool to see how my laptimes compare with a race on the new Imola for reference I love the new layout even though I loved the '88 version of the Variante Bassa. The first leg was so cool.
Man! definitely you should be invited to drive some racing car in a legendary circuit. Your racing lines are quite great! I'm from Brazil, so my petition is for you came to Brazil, have a classic "feijoada" with "caipirinha" roll up the leaves and take the wheel!!
Imola from 1981 to 1994 was just perfect. Long sweeping corners, chicanes and fast corners too, where you really needed balls of steel. Stefano Modena said: "I wanted to take variante bassa in fifth (everyone else took it in fourth gear). I tried, but I shitted my pants". After '94 weekend, they've butchered the track. Just my 2 cents.
Thank you, Rhys. That was great. Lots of info, nice editing and a good survey of motorsport history. More in the same vein, please. Silverstone via AC and AMS? Hockenheim? Jacarepagua in AMS1 really shows the change in track design philosophy.
I would love to see the 1972 layout personally. Given the changes in safety you could easily Tamburello and Villeneuve back to how they were now. The run-offs are bigger and there are tyre walls rather than concrete now.
I think the best version of Imola would be if they got rid of Variante Alta. As you said it's more awkward, kills the flow a bit and would create a massive overtaking opportunity into Rivazza. I don't know about the run-off there tho, maybe that would have to be updated. But a flat out run with some kinks and elevation changes from Aque Minerale to Rivazza would be amazing in my opinion.
Hey, where in the heck did you find the 2001 version of Imola? I've been looking for one for ages but could never find it. Would you mind sharing the link? Cheers
If someone created a version of Imola, which had the first sector without the chicanes at Tamburello and Villeneuve, stitched together with the 2000's Aqua Minerale and the modern day pit straight, that would be a monster track. Bloody dangerous mind, but would be thrilling to drive on the simulators
Favourite layout: 2001. I prefer the faster Variante Alta to the slower, more conventional chicane it became in 2006. Least favourite: 1988. The chicane leading to Aqua Minerale is really cumbersome and in my opinion ruins the flow of that section. I think the changes made after 1994 actually improved Imola, though I'm probably in the minority there. The 1972 layout looks fun though.
This F1 season is the best in terms of tracks. Legendary tracks like Nurburgring and Imola returned. I wonder why these tracks aren't included in F1 2020 game.
Is this really Assetto Corsa like UA-cam tells us? It doesn't feel like AC. If yes, where is the new Imola version from? The AC version doesn't have this skin and rumble strips and I can't find it on RD.
@@peterdaviesracing Yeah there’s the original track with and without the chicane, but after F1 left in 87 the track was modified before it became the Red Bull Ring (or A1-Ring). It was widened, more runoff, tighter Bosch curve. Either way it would still be a cool video
I don't get the logic behind the curb changes. If you don't want people to cut, make them higher. But flat curbs with small anti cutting stuff behind it just invites people to cut. No wonder there were so many lap time deletions.
Now run a car from the historic era and do the same...You'll find the track layouts back then allowed the cars to get up to speed(not that they were much slower overall). Maybe rose tinted goggles but all the older tracks seemed to have some very subtle and not so subtle nuances to them that made them standout far more than what we have nowdays ie; Bathurst with it's very narrow run down and onto conrod,Zandvoort with it's ludicrously fast ,flowing back section etc. They're all boring in modern cars that are made to handle corners though but period correct vehicles there's a bit of magic around balancing the car. Informative vid nonetheless.
It would be really nice to drive also on proposals which didnt make it into F1. Like one of proposal was to make from Tamburello 2 really slow chicanes. www.the-fastlane.co.uk/racingcircuits/Italy/ImolaProposal1995A.html
