@@itsreallyjakub If you know of another fast, reliable, and affordable family hauler let us know. Ill snag it before the price pumps like this one did. Haha
I got stranded my E55 wagon due to the gear selector Hall effect sensor. You may want to replace that with a rebuilt one ahead of time. It just doesn't let the transmission know what selection it is in so you are limited to 3rd gear. Other than that it's been across the US there and back fine. Rear main seal leaks, and my updated seat pneumatic pump doesn't seem to want to trigger for lumbar support (minor but I want that). Keep up the E55 content, it helps us all ;).
I had the rear passenger side gas smell on my wagon recently. Took it smile auto in North York (Greg there knows these cars well) and we looked at both fuel sender units with no leak. Smell seemed to be coming from somewhere in the passenger rear wheel well where the all the tubes and hoses go to the tank. We narrowed it down to the charcoal cannister and replaced foam filter inside it which was disintegrated.
Other common issues: Rear outer spring arm heim joints (You can replace just the joint instead of the whole arm, which would otherwise cost £1100 in parts), frontmost rear subframe bushes (these are also fluid filled - requires dropping the subframe), harmonic balancer separating (Expensive part, but not much in labour, probably £1000 to do) Mine has had the supercharger fluid done. Make sure to use the correct diff oil, its NOT an LSD, so its the 75W85 fluid you need. Conductor plate has been done on mine. I'm on the original SBC @125,000 miles (no warranty here in UK). Mine has had the fuel sending unit done, worth changing fuel filter at the same time as the interval is 15years. My engine has the oil pump chain rattle at a warm idle - likely not an issue other than the annoying noise. Its on its second set of timing cover gaskets (its actually RTV) and they are leaking anyway... Make sure to change those engine mounts as leaving them will fatigue the joints on the exhaust and cause that to fail too. Its worth mentioning that although this is a mid-2000's Mercedes with 500bhp, most of these common issues would impact a diesel airmatic model too, and aren't specific to the AMG models, and frankly if I'm going to spend money maintaining a car, I would much rather it WAS an AMG; as its a much more interesting vehicle which I have less issue putting some money into to keep tip top. That being said, I do all my own work where I can; so costs aren't what someone visiting a garage would incur, which might make the car unviable for a more typical owner. All in all, these are pretty undervalued by the market, and much cheaper to own an run than their contemporaries the RS6 and M5 - Front disks from my dealer were just £60 each, there is good aftermarket support with most things still being available - thanks to the diesel models being popular taxis no doubt . The character of the engine and gearbox suits a daily driver which you mostly use to smoke around in, its a lazy effortless torquey power delivery, which lends itself to reliability being a reliatively understressed engine. You will enjoy more of it more of the time without the gearbox woes of its competition, or the highly stressed nature of the M5 specifically. I too use mine as a daily and for carrying the family about in, we've been on holiday in it and utilise the rear facing third row for my eldest child when we need to carry a few more adults. I'm going to run and maintain it for as long as I can. Hoping for at least a decade. 🙂 Thanks for the E55 content, all the best.
Another E55 owner here in UK. Mines just gone in for rust in the area where the front strut and upper wishbone area is. Highly advise to get yours checked out. Its becoming more common on the W211 chassis.
I had my entire underbody (with all plastic panels removed) dry ice blasted and then coated by Honeyseal with their proprietary coating. They said it was spotless for it’s age
Jakub, thanks for keeping this car on the road. I'm a firm believer in purchasing preowned cars. It's much nicer for the environment to use these cars until it isn't economically feasible to keep them on the road and too many people are willing to just throw away cars when there are so many wonderful cars to choose from on the market. People love to poo poo on these cars, but they are good reliable cars and shouldn't be feared! Yes, a Toyota or Lexus is probably less headache to own as far as repairs goes. That doesn't mean that these Mercedes are unreliable, because they are not.
I've had mine for a couple of years and done most of the things on your list. In its lifetime my wagon has had some of the bits (SBC & Airmatic struts and Pump) done more than once. I have every receipt since 2008 and its had £34k worth of parts. Averaging 2k a year with one year at £7k. (2 gearbox rebuilds it didn't need, mouse ate TCU loom) I've had W210 E55, S211 55 and a 221 65. All three were extremely expensive to maintain and run, as predicted before purchase. One thing I would reiterate, 211s eat suspension parts and bushings, faster if your geo is out. Great vid Jakob.
One thing people don’t talk about which these cars which I’ve had/have seen others have is the supercharger clutch pulley. Those things suck, check for the bearing and any noise coming from it. The spacing between the pulley and the electro magnetic clutch should be 0.35mm-0.45mm. If it’s under 0.35mm it will chirp and the supercharger will engage too harsh, if it’s over 0.45mm your supercharger will be sluggish. These cars are strong but everything is finicky, tensioners and pulleys are going to be your worst nightmare if they do go. A new supercharger pulley (oem/oem style) will set you back at least 500 us. The E55 was my dream car, now I can’t wait to sell mine
Tensioners and pulleys are all at the front of the engine and easy to check/replace. You don't need to replace the whole supercharger pulley, you can just replace the bearing: ua-cam.com/video/TQsVok6BC50/v-deo.html The harmonic balancer is expensive it fails, and unlike the other parts, can't be found aftermarket, so unfiortunately that one is a big bill. See my other post.
@@adogmcdizzle I agree they are easy to check and replace but doesn't make parts cheaper. The supercharger pulley wears on the rear, that makes the pulley closer to the magetic part of the supercharger. This is a issue im having currently. Transmission and heat soak is a major too and I live in a colder climate
The only difference on suspension from sedan to wagon is the rear struts/shock absorbers, they are shorter on the wagon. I just put 320 cdi wagon struts on mine.
Hey Jakob- there is a 2004 E55 AMG wagon for sale out my way in BC- 28,000 km. Minty mint. Trying real hard not to buy it, this mainly because of your purchase and my love for the wagon. These videos help- thank you.
The one for sale in Langley? I’ve also been staring at the add for it. Guaranteed there’s some maintenance that will need to be done so you’re going to need to budget for ~$60k for that car (if it is indeed the one you’re talking about)
That's the one. I have seen it. It's unreal. It's. It going to need much. The guy selling it is legit- what an amazing shop and inventory he has. The car is a dream of mine- just trying to justify the money. It's US flippable in 5 years- you would make money
Have you considered getting into wrenching on your own car? With a lift, you'd definitely have lots of content to provide. A rear main seal job can be done in one day on these cars. It's very easy to remove the transmission. I've done it on both of my mercedes. Once with a lift and once on jack stands.
I used to wrench and still do on occasion. These days I’d rather have experts do their jobs and spend more time with my family. I also don’t have any special expensive scan tools that make working on any of my cars much easier
You can very easily check if the fuel smell is coming from the sender. Just pull out the rear seat (super easy) and remove the cover under the driver-side seat. If you get intermittent leaking you’ll see the residue. Mine seeps very slightly and I’m planning to replace it but in the meantime I just don’t fill to max. Other than that my ‘05 sedan has been awesome. These are such cool cars.
I love this gen of Benz, but the repairs 15 years later kinda outweigh the positives unless you can afford multiple vehicles then this is a good weeknd car
On my E55 the CPS sensor has gone out. It has happened to me while on the freeway, the car literally shut off while I was going 65+MPH. Also there is no check engine light when that happens. But the sensor is cheap and fairly simple to replace. I carry an extra one just incase.
the oil and air filters you buy from the dealer are made by Mann so you may as well get them from rockauto. Mercedes under designed the transmission mounts so you can upgrade to one from a clk500 black not cheap though. However, one you realize how easy they are to swap out you may as just replace them with a regular one at every other oil change. Of course mine's a sedan...
Good stuff. Supercharger oil change is usually pretty easy. Remove supercharger. Drain and measure old fluid. Replace with the same volume that came out. Re-install supercharger. The first and last steps are the most time-consuming 😁
Lots of modern cars have fluid filled drivetrain mounts. There are solid mounts available for just about everything. But be careful with those... Swapping in solid mounts can make a huge difference in NVH. I put solid mounts in my Audi and the NVH was awful. Fluid filled mounts are worth it.
I almost went with the Mercedes Black Series solid mounts but I figure if these lasted 165,000km, the new ones will last just as long as I won't have any additional NVH which is what I was trying to avoid
The common failure items and routine replacement components have not failed or needed replacement on my 150k mile E class wagon except for one. The rear subframe. Mercedes did the replacement for free. I am going to install Hardrace adjustable camber arms for the rear. I want camber control.
Looking at a coupe e55 and deciding between that or a 5th gen Camaro. Going to be a daily, Mercedes is stock and 90k miles, Camaro is not stock and 150k miles. Hardest decision ever
I've had my 2003 160,000 mile E55 for 10 years now. All of the potential issues you referred to I have had evcept rear main seal. Replaced the air struts 3 times. Finally went with BC 30 way coilovers and never looked back. The SBC went on mine while driving, not fun, backup system felt like Fred Flinstone's feet trying to stop. The SC chirp is something I have grown to cherish. Enjoy that beauty!
I enjoyed your video. Looks like you've done a lot of research on this car. I'm a casual viewer, since I have a 2001 E320 wagon so I'm always curious about next generation cars. I would have enjoyed knowing if the issues/problems you mentioned including ones that you anticipate having specific to the E55 or all of the wagons of that era.
My self coming from JDM world and getting in this platform and done multiple engine and manual swaps those oil pump seals are over hyped. Back in the day I was dealer Benz tech and fuel smell is only seeping from plastic housing where it was bonded, this won’t make it catch fire. I’m sorry sir but comments like these give cars bed rep with no reason, looking forward to more E55 videos 👍
German W211 enthusiast here: You should absolutely check the wheel wells for rust, there's a specific spot behind the wheel well cover where the W211 chassis start to rust after 20 years, front and rear. Here's a German video, you may not understand what he says, but you can see where he points (starts at 7:00): ua-cam.com/video/Ii7uLG0n-KA/v-deo.html
What is amazing is a Japanese market car with that kind of mileage. I thought Japanese inspections are so tough that most cars don't pass after 30-40 k miles.
Nice ride! True sleeper😎👌🏼. I got a 05 CLK 55 and love these m113. They have their little issues but worth its German muscle car feel reliable for a German. Brakes are another costly one on theses but I guess fancy aftermarket brembos arent cheap either. Actually AMGs are brembos...Those rear tires don't last long but there's only one person to blame 😂.
Jakub, I'm considering an '07 E63 amg wagon for my family hauler to replace our Fiesta ST which we use for typical short haul around town stuff, and while a blast as you know, does feel a bit sketch with the kiddo on board. My question is, how painful is the fuel consumption on yours when just puttering around doing family stuff? (I'm assuming they'd be similar) The ST sips fuel even when hooning, which is nice. We have an '05 G500 as well (from Japan) but mostly use that for snow and camping/offroad stuff because around our hilly town it drinks gas like a drunken dragon. Oh, and the child seat doesn't fit in my Elise. Thanks!
Loving the E55 wagon videos! With the engine and transmission mounts, did you replace them with OEM parts? Would you mind sharing the work involved & costs?
I replaced with OEM because I didn’t want to increase NVH. I figure since these lasted 165,000km I can deal with replacing them again if I keep the car that long. I don’t remember the exact cost but the mounts themselves are very affordable
I've had similar dream. To daily drive 2011 Audi A8 4.2 V8. Bought one in a very nice cosmetic condition with only 106K kms on it (if true). In 6 months I spent almost 12K in repairs and maintenance cost and when I was pretty sure everything is sorted out the engine blew up on me. I decided not to replace the engine and sold the car as non driver 😞
Brutal right now. I don’t think there’s any new C63 in Canada yet lol. I’ve seen articles that they’ve sold very few in Europe. Hopefully Mercedes smartens up and brings V8’s back
Nice ride and I'm liking the content so far. Poly mounts solve fluid mount issues. Having older cars is fun but can be $$ sometimes for maintenance or upgrades. Called the fire department Monday for a Mercedes suv that was burning up. Keep up the good work on both channels.
It's awesome that so many youtubers in the past 5 or so years are starting to get on the e55/m113k cars. Makes me want to open a dedicated millennium mercedes garage in the pacific west coast. LSC is a big reason I got into the E55, and then bought 2 more Mercedes after that one was totaled. Basically when I see a GM V8 guy also like Mercedes I'm like "ok, we have something in common here, let me see what this guy has to say."
Bro oil pan “easy to replace”??? Funny dude. It has an upper and lower oil pan and 2 drain plugs. The front subframe has to be dropped for proper replacement of oil pan and oil pickup tube seal replacement. In the US it costs around $2k. Clearly for you it’s as easy as an oil change, since in both cases all you need to do is just pay for it, the mechanic does the work.
I don't think your garage could fit a BendPak lift. Just clean your AMG in April when a true Spring finally comes North. And, from watching channels on Mercedes and BMW's and Audi's something always needs to be replaced or fixed. It's the special way your takes advantage of you from it giving you pleasure in driving a nice ride...
I did some rough calculations for a Bendpak and I think it’ll fit 2 cars like a corvette and foxbody or SL. Probably not the e55. Just need to move the door rails and opener
Have the same car and my rear right shock was not working anymore. I replaced it myself and researched it all on the forums etc. and found out you need to use the part number of the shocks from the later W211 E63 AMG Wagon. Only right part is at the MB dealer, and over here in Europe there were lots available.
if that was true then we'd see them all over the road... dealerships would carry more of them than sedans. They're ugly grampa cars. Might as well put a slab of wood on the door and do a national lampoon vacation.@@itsreallyjakub

Back in the day I was dealer Benz tech and fuel smell is only seeping from plastic housing where it was bonded, this won’t make it catch fire. I’m sorry sir but comments like these give cars bed rep with no reason, looking forward to more E55 videos 👍
It was a joke
Hey what’s the make of the after market air suspension controller you mentioned? Thanks
Brakes are still good here but I’m sure I’ll have to replace within the next 2 years. Having a tire sponsor helps 🥰
I love this car wholeheartedly.
Thanks!
I’ve only looked at it once. I believe it’s in the 13L/100km range
@@itsreallyjakub that is understandable. Thanks for the reply and all the best!
I am looking to import one. What was the actual price from door to door with the replacement
Is the brakes a set cycle thing then an actual mechanical failure issue.
For the most part station wagons have been laughed at since the 1990's but somehow Mercedes kept it looking cool....
Sorry to hear that
What’s your take on AMG now? Any review of the 4 cylinder C63 upcoming?
Brutal right now. I don’t think there’s any new C63 in Canada yet lol. I’ve seen articles that they’ve sold very few in Europe. Hopefully Mercedes smartens up and brings V8’s back
This was good for me to see because I want to get an SL55AMG with that same motor.
I believe those also have the hydraulic ABC suspension which is a whole other ballgame of potential problems! Awesome looking cars
What's with the blue green front tints? They gotta go.
Stock on this era of Mercedes. They’re staying forever
Is it possible to do a pro-active preventive replacement of the Mercedes out of warranty SBC unit, instead of waiting for an accident to happen?
Yes, it will just be out of your pocket
This is a good time for you to make some diy videos!
Nice ride and I'm liking the content so far. Poly mounts solve fluid mount issues. Having older cars is fun but can be $$ sometimes for maintenance or upgrades. Called the fire department Monday for a Mercedes suv that was burning up. Keep up the good work on both channels.
Thanks, I avoided poly mounts for additional NVH
My 2018 e63 wagon is giving me a fuel smell on cold start. Wonder if its the same issue you're seeing?
I’m actually getting it fixed this week. Will make another update video after
Cool. Can you ask if the same issue might exist with a 2018 model? 😅
@ItsReallyJakub Hey, are those windows on the car tinted in some type of ceramic blue? Or is that standard factory glass? It looks so cool.
These are factory tints. Mercedes did this in the 2000's on some cars, that's why I'm leaving the fronts as is rather than tinting them dark to match
Hey Jakub could you please link the controller for the airmatic to lower it? I need it just to lower the rear so my dogs can get in easier
It’s in my other air suspension video you can see how it works
You start getting one thing…. Bada bing bada bong… garage became a workshop
It's awesome that so many youtubers in the past 5 or so years are starting to get on the e55/m113k cars. Makes me want to open a dedicated millennium mercedes garage in the pacific west coast. I've got an E500 wagon and an S55 amg in fixing too.

LSC is a big reason I got into the E55, and then bought 2 more Mercedes after that one was totaled. Basically when I see a GM V8 guy also like Mercedes I'm like "ok, we have something in common here, let me see what this guy has to say."
Way cool Wagon Jakub.
Lovely car!
Next video: Here's ALL the things I love about my yellow Lamborghini Aventador :p
Hahahah wrong channel...for now
@@itsreallyjakub I meant your kid's little car in the background 😂
@@smamq oh hahahah yes that one
E55 AMG Problems - that’s actually a full title of the car
Sc oil need to do every 30k miles i believe
Where’s the Mercedes factory recommendation for that
Bro oil pan “easy to replace”???
@@itsreallyjakub You can start your own version of Hoovies Garage...
I guess I already have. Just without the cheap Kansas cost of living and smart business decisions he’s made outside of UA-cam
The break by wire systems they get blocked easy to toyota used them in alot of their vehicles like the soarer/celsior etc
Always knew a Yuri-less version of The Straight Pipes would be better!
Haha I’m having fun doing both
Do you guys think he daily drives it?
There’s no way
Dude, get fuel sending unit seal fixed, especially if you're transporting your kids!
Checked it, not leaking! It’s the charcoal vapour canister, no big deal 😍
Have the same car and my rear right shock was not working anymore. I replaced it myself and researched it all on the forums etc. and found out you need to use the part number of the shocks from the later W211 E63 AMG Wagon. Only right part is at the MB dealer, and over here in Europe there were lots available.
It’s tricky finding some of the very specific amg wagon parts
I still like it
AMG from Japan?
That’s correct
Next time have a premium cigar in your garage and tell us what kind it is.
I have to save those kind of requests for my OnlyFans
Just wondering tho, did you replace the blinker fluid?usually the blinker fluid pump goes out on these👀
All 4 blinkers and blinkers pumps
@@itsreallyjakub and, because you’re in Canada, you need the bilingual low carbon blinker fluid. About three times as expensive.
Sooo, basic service/wears items? Usual reliable Mercedes.
Yes lol
@@itsreallyjakubyour click bait title makes it sound like it’s unreliable!
It’s not click bait. I went through all the potential problems. Complete opposite of click bait
why would u buy a wagon?
Because they’re better than sedans
if that was true then we'd see them all over the road... dealerships would carry more of them than sedans. They're ugly grampa cars. Might as well put a slab of wood on the door and do a national lampoon vacation.@@itsreallyjakub
@@rjf7023what a dealership carries has absolutely nothing to do with what is good/cool. Look at how everyone is killing the sedan in favor of jelly bean-shaped CUV’s.
@@SonikDethmonkey wrong. Dealerships carry inventory accoring to customer demand. They dont carry Wagons because wagons dont sell as well. Why dont they sell as well? cuz they ugly.
You lack logic and rational thought.
@@rjf7023 exactly, it’s based solely on customer demand and that’s my point. But you seem to be making an argument based on that fact, so by your rational ugly CUV’s are the greatest thing in the world because it’s what customers apparently like to buy.
There is not such thing as lifetime fluid.. change all your fluids on timely basis.. oil every 5K, tranny every 60K, brake every 30K, differential every 30K. if you want your car to last,,,,
Correct
I'm not sold on Mercedes quality. My wife had one that had transmission issues and the alternator died after 48,000. The newest one had some valve for the engine and it was $1500, the car only has 51,000km on it! Seem kinda junky.
What year? They've gotten worse more recently
@@cloudyview I think the first one was 2012 and current is 2018. I'd never buy one. I understand things happen but such low mileage in both incidents is a red flag for me. I like my Honda Ridgeline with 300,000km lol, barely put money into it for repairs. Knock on wood
All e55's have air suspension front & back.
Shame someone slammed it, pointless
It’s air suspension. I installed a controller to raise and lower it.
@@itsreallyjakub Ah!!! Fair enough, and it's your car!!! You seem a good lad TBH. I had one 2003 just before they started galvanizing them!! 😞 Bought in 2014, I kept it 6 months. Brutal performance
Right on
9's? :p
No chance
@itsreallyjakub just messin man! Slick wagon.
The parts are Garbage. It's built that way on purpose to keep you in the dealer repair shop and for parts. It's a money grab.
Clearly making way too much money making UA-cam videos.
Time to buy a bunch of Lambo’s like Stradman to prove you right
It will look nicer with the e63 front bar
Everyone does that. I’m keeping this one. Cleaner, simpler, more sleeper
