- This video is a continuation of the video I did about the proper position that the saddle belongs on the horse. I received a lot of questions on that other video regarding cinches, back cinches and breast collars. So I am addressing all of that in this video. I have exposure and minimal experience as an adult, in my younger man days I used to ride a bunch. Certainly have forgotten more than I remember. I absolutely love to listen to him, it’s peaceful, informative and easy. I could and I have played the videos one after another as if I’m listening to him narrating a memoir.

I’m 23 and about to graduate college in arkansas from texas. I plan on buying some land some day and starting a family and having a little ranch of my own. I will say as a young man and Christian I really appreciate all your wisdom and hope to live by the same respect. Thanks for what you do.

I have been wrangling for dude strings for more than a decade now, and still would love to spend a week with these folks.
I've ridden nearly as many miles while using a neoprene cinch and have also never sored a horse. I do like wool saddle pads. Also, I pick the hooves before every ride.
I got a feeling I'll be returning to these videos years in the future. It doesn't mean anything to me now, but I plan on living many lives.

I was so blessed growing up to learn from one of the best horsemen to have ever lived. And even momentsI spent I was literally in heaven. I grew up bought my own horses, and saddles, learned for myself which saddles were quality, which saddles were junk. A lifetime of reading and learning I have never regretted

One thing that you did not address is cinch length and where the cinch D rings should land height wise compared to the horses elbow and barrel. Everything else I agree with. Especially the non neoprene deal. I just can't bring myself to put rubber on a horse. Also agree with the no gel pads. If you have a good saddle you don't need gel pads. Just remembered another thing you didn't address is pad thicknesses, doubling up on pads, pad liners, navajo blankets etc..
I am curious about those things too 😊

I really wish everyone went through this video before they put a saddle on their horse. This is very sound advice from someone who knows what they're talking about. It's good for the rider and the horse. It covers comfort, safety and functionality. Amazing.

I enjoy your channel! I have always loved horses. Never owned one but went to a
few week long day camps as a young teen where were learned how to groom a horse, put on the bridle, put on the saddle, and enjoy the ride. This brings back treasured memories.
Dewayne, we agree on just about all the saddling tips. My main difference is that I like to saddle mine from the "Indian" side. I always have. My horse is used to it by now, and I occasionally saddle from the near side, just to keep him honest, but my main reason for the Indian side is that there's just so much less stuff to swing over the horse. Just lazy on my part, I guess, but it works for me. Great video, though. You going to do one on bridling your horse next? You could include how to put on a cowboy rope halter and how to tie it, because I sure see a lot of folks that have trouble with that.

Mamma is absolutely right, concerning the center tug strap. Seeing folks riding that one loose, is as big a pet peeve as a loose trail cinch. Also, especially with Green horses, i suggest reaching for that trail cinch, standing rear facing, at the shoulder and reaching with the left hand.

Hi Dewayne and Momma...glad I recently found your channel. I've had horse in me since I can remember. I'm 60 years old now and finally started living my horse dream 10 years ago. So happy and blessed. Started out in the English world and quicjly went Western. On my 2nd horse as the first wasn't a good fit. Oso and I do well, he's a good level headed gelding and have had him since he was 3. Thanks for the saddling tips...I learned a couple of things that will help. God Bless you and your family and I hope to get out to your school with my husband in 2025.
I really like the look of the brass flashing on those stirrups. Functional too i'd imagine in rugged country.

I might add not all horses like wool pads. My neighbor has a mare that if you put a wool pad on her she tries to move her skin, hump her back, wiggle around until she is untacked and the wool pad is replaced with something different. He said she has always been that way.
Amazing to learn there is a purpose for every little strap and hook etc....all to benefit the horse. Your love for the horse is very evident and so good of you to educate others on the proper use of tack!

You always start with the main cinch, then the back cinch(if used), then the breast collar. Then when you are done you start with the breast collar, the back cinch and lastly the main cinch
Excellent information. I’ve been riding for years and I agree 100%! Absolutely a thinking person’s craft or you could find yourself pushing up daises.

Thank you, you have answered all my questions from the first one, like how to tie up the latigo when not in use and how to tie the cynch to keep from dragging or laying over seat! Yes sadly i used the neopreme ones, but will be changing them asap especially after how you explained it 😳😳. But live and learn, i will take what i learned and make adjustments, I do truely thank you so much for you wisdom and knowledge its a breath of fresh air! Its what i have been searching for, just simple logic and truth! May God bless you and Mrs!

I admit that these are all great points. Dwayne, we must have had teachers cut from the same cloth. I snicker every time you mention things “gone western”. Anyone who’s dealt with horses in a variety of conditions and situations knows that at some point, any day, any scenario that things may go “western”. 😊 Experience teaches it but experience also teaches that you as the rider, your horses compadre, you do all you can to think ahead, outside yourself and take care of your horse. At the end of the day you return to the barn safe, unscathed and both of you better for it. Not to mention all those around you.

Thanks for this part 2, My horse is going to be a working horse not so much pleasure riding. I was pretty sure how I wanted (needed) my rig set up as there is very little flat county and a lot more mountainous terrain. I also may need to do a little bit of roping but not really any cutting. I didn't want to be throwing stuff on my horse that I didn't really need. It seams like from my land I probably should be running the back cinche as well as the breast collar. At least if I'm doing any riding work over were the cow pasture is as I prepensely left the flattest pastures for the horse barn and paddock.
It's almost hard to believe just how much of this Horsemanship I can't remember or didn't even know riding as a kid and young teen but now I get to retire to my very on small ranch ( and learn it all over again)lol. Thanks for all the time you put into these video's. Even when you go over something I do remember it always nice getting that conformation.

Hard jerking big cattle or a high withers/thinner horse I do have a nice wool pad with get wither pads, other than that it’s a 1” wool pad for me. Mohair all the way!!

@drycreekwranglerschool This is great information. How about adding another video to this series about how to choose a good saddle & good places to buy them? Reputable brands? Do you need to spend $6,000+ or are there good saddles out there for less than that? What to look for in a saddle? Saddle maintenance? Do they last forever… when might a saddle need to be replaced? Etc. Thanks!
On the buckle, there's a ol' ranch in Cedarville CA that don't use the back cinch while the main cinch has a breakaway fold in the cinch to bale off! 😂

I always separate the saddle from pad, it stays wet and rots the fleece and leather, I’m in a very high humidity area though.
Nice video. We saddle a lot alike, except I put my pad on and then the saddle. They come off together. Don't ask me why. I would like to see you demonstrate how a saddle can flip around under a horses belly with a breast collar properly attached. The way I adjust my collar and at least with my horses anatomy, the strap that attaches between her legs comes taught long before the saddle even gets sideways. Your mileage may vary. I'm gonna try it though.
I think if you will go back and watch the video, what I said was the breast collar will not keep the saddle from rolling. However, depending on how the breast collar is made, and the design of the saddle, it might stop the saddle on the side of the horse, and keep it from rolling all the way under the belly.
Yes Sir, that's what you said. Upon replay, I stand corrected. Thank you! Sounded to me like you were saying it won't keep the saddle from ending up under the belly with (some) breast collars. Of which I was not aware. I enjoy the simple, direct manner of your videos; that are both entertaining and educational.

😂 I just figured out there was a treat involved
When I was somewhere around 11 I went riding horses with my friend, and I was used to saddling and cinching my horse. I was riding one of hers, and I don’t know why, but I didn’t cinch it as tight as I should have. We were running through a field and my saddle started to slip to the left and the horse I was on really took off running. My friend had to run her horse up ahead of me and cut it off and get it to stop. I had fallen off at that point, but my foot was stuck in the stirrup, and the horse kept running when I fell off, dragging me along the ground next to its feet until she got it stopped. I was completely fine, and I think the adrenaline kept me from feeling hurt, but my point of the story is, we were on part of the Ute Indian Reservation and I pictured them up on the hillside, watching over their land laughing at such a sight.

Dwayne - one tiny suggestion I picked up from another UA-cam channel was to reverse how you buckle girths for storage. If you flip it and put keeper through in other direction the tab takes a downward bend instead of up. Means that tab lays flatter when it’s not in use when you ride.
If this was intelligible enough to understand - is there a problem I’m not seeing with this approach?
PS: love how you tie up latigo when removing saddle. I’m one of those who’ve struggled with long straight strap, trying to make sure it’s not twisted as horse fusses and moves off. Just one more distraction from keeping myself safe next to 1200 lb animal with metal clad feet.
