I personally often buy things I know I will need in bulk so when the crazy hit I did not have to think about it. I do like what he said about a designated shopping day. I think people have no idea how much of their issues are often due to biology and genetics because the inability to change them makes people too scared to think about it.

If I didn't have a credit card and apple pay I don't think I'd have such a bad shopping addiction. I'm a homebody and don't like going out much. But it's so easy to shop in the comfort of your home now.

what helps me are two things. First, being totally aware of all the purchases that have not worked out for me, and that if I don't take time to research and think about a purchase I will almost always regret it. Second, I have taken my credit card off all shopping sites, so if I want to buy something I have to take out the card and type in all the info, this seems simple and almost stupid but it works. I would also recommend looking at Debtors Anonymous information - there have wonderful thoughts that I think can be helpful for many people, if not everyone (i.e. only use a credit card that draws immediately from your bank account).

I'm a shopping addict and I'm going to try a low buy month that will hopefully lead to a low buy year. I'm not in debt but I do get physical symptoms when I don't shop. So I need to change and buy needs rather than impulse wants. I am an emotional shopper so it's a hard habit to break but I'm trying because I have too much stuff. I have just started living alone a couple of months ago so loneliness is also an issue. But it has made me realise that loved ones and the moments we share are more important than owning things that just sit and gather dust. I do love books but I have too many I don't need any more.

I'd definitely suggest trying to journal a lot and find out what void you're trying to fill and maybe find some hobbies to do instead of shopping (puzzles, going for a walk, working out, drawing, reading etc)

I refuse to pay with my phone and I will not start now. I am still using physical card and I think thanks to this video, I will try to pay more cash too next year and think more about my purchase too. I am already careful but like anyone, specially on amazon, you can easily add items which are not needed. Great video!

I couldn't believe the toilet paper stockpiling that happened. Hilarious and just bizarre. I didn't hoard. I had a pre-existing toilet paper subscription so I was sorted. 😂 I online shopped my asse off during covid lockdowns though. I felt sorry for all the small stores an operators and owners who are losing money. Dangerous times. I did get a Dyson stick vacuum though, best purchase ever 🤣

Absolutely. As you should. Banks lately play so many games, and as economy goes down, so do the banks, and we decided to keep very little in the banks. Paper money is also not as safe. We all need to keep some silver coins. No matter what happens in the world, silver and gold will always buy us a loaf of bread or toilet paper 😜😂🤣lol

Reminds me of the book Cool: How the Brain’s Hidden Quest for Cool Drives Our Economy and Shapes Our World. The authors argue that our consumption is drive by our desire to look "cool," which is just a way for us to stand out from the crowd. But everyone wants to look "cool," so then everyone is doing it, then new "cool" things pop up. And the cycle continues. The authors do not argue that this is a bad thing because it ultimately breeds a sense of belonging with people, plus contributes to economic growth. However, the book came out in 2015. How quickly something becomes "cool" and how quickly something becomes "uncool" happens a lot faster now, just 8 years later. It's harder to keep up with trends, which is breeding a sense of inadequacy in far too many people.

Even before covid most people where I live had moved away from using cash, so one thing that I found helped me was my decision to stop online shopping. Last year I deleted all profiles and I haven't made an online purchase since July '23 which I feel really good about. Even when I online window shop it never ends in a purchase. I have saved a lot of money and don't feel guilty anymore about overspending and -consuming. Of course if someone only shops in real life this won't help, but it really helped me :)

😂😂I was like you and had to run all over the place to find the TP. I’m the U.S. and it was crazy here. I never experienced the lockdowns because as a RN I just kept working so my life barely changed. I agree with what all he is saying. I don’t have any social media except watching You Tube. I don‘ t watch TV either so my ad exposure is probably very limited compared to the average person and so I don’t see a lot of new things to buy. I’m 51 so this is easy for me because I didn’t grow up with all of that and it literally overwhelms my brain. I agree with the physical activity part too. I walk 2-4 miles everyday and it does help me a lot, physically AND mentally. The list will probably help. That’s what I do and it does give me pause and sometimes I’m just like, Nah…I don’t really need that. My weakness this holiday, my two grandson’s. I have a 3 year old one and 5 month old one and I had to tell myself NO, the limit is x and stick to it because I just wanted to get them everything. Good video Caitlin.

Yes it’s their agenda, because it’s easy to control us, by controlling our survival. If you don’t obey, they can amity out your digital card… but rest assure! Its not going last. The new quantum system is coming, its actually being implemented, all world banks were forced to agree and they sign for that, only trying not to follow, well i spending last days still stealing , manipulating. Because once the system is in full speed, banks will have to follow the laws. By laws, they must have at least around 30% assists / money. Do you know how much they have now? 0 . Since Clinton repealed Glass-Steagall act, banks have a ball… they can do whatever they want with your money… they don’t have to tell you. They can hold your funds, using fraud or suspicious activity clause… if you do your research , you will see how many banks are stealing ppl money. Some of them had to pay huge fines, enforced by FCC , but its still a drop what are they making … so all that will end. New currency is going to be gold backed, and adhere by Bessel 1, 2, 3,4 international banking laws.. no games planet will be returned back to the people 🙏

Great video! I’m really loving your content. I definitely have a shopping addiction and although I don’t feel like I’m filling a void when I shop, I definitely always feel like I “need” something to add to my wardrobe or jewellery collection. At times, I wish I was more simplistic in my desires, but I love and enjoy beautiful things and like to adorn myself with them too. There was a time where I would go broke each month buying entry level luxury items because I liked the status associated with the brand, but now, I like fashion and jewellery as a form of self expression.

This was VERY interesting! The part about stress--I can relate 100% to, yesterday I was dealing with a sick dog and next thing I knew, I was online ordering something I needed and had a hard time resisting that urge to buy a bunch of other items I didn't need. No, I wasnt a toilet paper hoarder, but I always have some spare around, ingrained in me from years of living a distance from a store. I was most shocked at how in the US, cleaning supplies became super scarce because of this same urge--and then I was thinking "don't other people clean their homes???" It was all such a bizarre period and this video explained a lot of what happened and what is still happening. The pandemic as well as current and recent world events have us all feeling stressed in so many ways.

After nearly falling over backwards when I calculated the grand total of how much money I spent shopping in 2023 I decided to do a no-buy for 6 months. My spare time and energy were routed into getting back to a fit lifestyle as I had gained weight since covid to the point all of my jeans no longer fit me. I signed up for a couple dance classes and started doing Peloton almost every day.
The satisfaction and sense of accomplishment I feel when I finish a Peloton session (esp if I am not in the mood and consider skipping but do it anyway) and the sense of community and stimulation I feel in dance class is exponentially higher and more fulfilling than the high I got from shopping. I love my new life.
PS clothes are one the worst depreciating assets on the planet along with cars! And the second hand marketplace is so oversaturated that selling is nearly always a waste of time - it's a buyers market and some people don't mind selling for peanuts so buyers can lowball all day long because someone will say yes.
PPS Get a bidet, toilet paper is not hygienic

I have a designated shopping/errand day for my weekly/routine items (groceries, feed for livestock-we live on a farm-, normal things like that), but, like most people I imagine, I am NOT so good about the impulse shopping online on places such as amazon. even my groceries I order online for the bulk of items and simply do the pick up on my errand day. I do find though doing it that way I spend less on groceries overall though, as when I do the shopping in store (even with a list) I have more impulse buys and spend more overall.
My goals for this year include being more mindful and intentional with my purchases-both in store (sticking to a list in places where impulse buys are easy for me and seem cheap like thrift stores, dollar stores, bog box stores, etc) and online and not clicking the 'buy now' button and waiting a couple of days or even longer to see if I truly want something, perhaps buying less, but purchasing higher quality, longer lasting items that are more timeless in nature, etc.

Yep neuroscientist working in Marketing, companies spend probably billions per years studying our brain and psychology and harvesting our data (for free or we litteraly pay them to steal our informations!) With that data, it give insight on what works and not. They can definitely manipulate people into buying more and more, and spend even though they have nothing left to spend. Thats pretty much the whole concept of Marketing. It's not just graphic design and knowing your company's mission, style and such. Think obesity crisis in USA it's mass manipulation of pretty much what could be called poisonous food to people and children. It's not a coincidence. Even when the government try to pass laws to put little health warnings that could maybe slightly help people think before buying that junk. Big companies Lobbies to keep their profit at everyone's life expense. There is even laws where you can't say anything negative publicly about a food company (even if it's a proven true claim)!!!

  • @jins_thicc_lips

*Am I the only one who experiences the exact opposite?*
When I go into a physical store I feel the urge/ pressure to buy something just because I "committed" and made that choice to step in there, the real life items on the shelves are more tempting than images of the same items on a store page and that's why my most impulsive purchases were made in person
But when I go into an online store I don't feel that kind of pressure, I can walk away from the app/ site whenever I want to, I can add things to my wish list to think if I really need them instead of having the "take it or leave it" options like the physical stores. The "only this amount of items left" thing can't affect me because I know that if it'll be sold out it means that it wasn't meant for me.
Also, when I order online I get extremely strategic, I don't buy something when I don't have a clear vision and I can always see the total amount of money I am about to spend, rather than having a bunch of items in my physical cart, with limited resources and a calculator without knowing that another store has the same items for cheaper
Also the pain of paying for me is most felt online, because I can clearly see (without sugar coating) where exactly did I spend my money and the exact number of money left first thing when I open the PayPal app, so I get reminded of my latest purchases and saving goals and I get motivated to save more to reach my goals, rather than having a bunch of coins, banknotes and some receipts that I usually throw away (even though I try to fix my approach to cash)

A lot of places in the US are now cash-free so we don’t have a choice. Most of our sports and music venues don’t take cash, at least in my area. I pay cash sometimes when I can and the younger generation struggles to count the change. They likely get nearly zero practice. It’s rather fascinating, if sad.
There is a definite disconnect with people and their sense of money and value now. Not just youth either. A lot of us who online shop feel it, I think.

This was very interesting. Apple pay is my big issue, but also buying stuff online that I didn’t need. In Sweden it is becoming very difficult to pay by cash, majority of restaurants, hotels and retails do not accept it. Grocery shops still do but the number is shrinking by the hour.
And you cannot withdraw as much cash from the ATM as you want to, there is a monthly limit. And you cannot put as much cash as you want to on your account, also a limit, I believe around 1.500$ per month.
That is very annoying as that is your money but you do not really have much control. So, here where I live, cash is not really an option 😤

Wow that’s slavery, because cashless society is obeying society. Because if you don’t, they can wiped out your bank account. Or imagine, there are cyber attacks or just errors, and your funds can disappear or shrink. For example. Just one day before New year eve, me and my husband went to the bank. We were doing 10k transaction, 5k cashiers check and 5 k check. In the process power outage happened. It was just a minute, but they had to restart all system . It took an hour . It looked all went well, we had busy day so we didn’t check account. Later we were realized that instead of one 10k transaction, the system charged us 2 . Its 31st , Sunday everything closed, so now we are going tomorrow to demand correction. Imagine there is no cash, so no need for banks, everything is automated, so how in the world we would be able to prove, their mistake?!… we don’t need that. And as you said there are limits on cash withdrawal but also there are limits on sending money, buying crypto, etc… banks acting crazy and at any point can stop your payment, hold your account, under fraud or protecting you pretense…. Its very dangerous to us, we the ppl. And we don’t want that 😡🙏

In Scandinavia, it is absolutely impossible to live with cash alone. In Oslo and I believe also Stockholm, taxis don’t accept cash payment, nor public transportation, and an overwhelming number of shops are also card-only. The UK is rapidly heading in the same direction. I think the problem isn’t the method of payment. It’s YOUR self-discipline and self-control. I personally spend the same amount using either cash or card, and card transactions are sometimes safer and can be blocked if you ran into issues with things. I’m a big fan of a cashless society and it helps me monitor my spending without having to write down every time when I make a purchase what the purchase is. I can check my card transactions and I’ll know. I also prefer online shopping because I can get the essentials, like long-life food and household, a lot cheaper. Online also gives you time to think and reconsider if you really need that. I always feel rushed to make a decision in stores. Again, it has nothing to do with online or offline, cash or card. It’s all about YOU, and your self-control ALONE. Don’t shift the blame onto modernisation, because it’s not about those things.

Except that's just not true. If you put a non smoker in a room with a box of open cigarettes, he's not using will power not to smoke. He just has no interest in the cigarettes. If you put someone who is quitting smoking in a room with a box of open cigarettes, it's going to be a constant struggle for him. If he's in the room, for ten minutes, there is a good chance that he'll be able to use self discipline and self control to choose not to smoke but the longer he's within reach of temptation the more likely it is that he will smoke. He has to come up with tactics to avoid smoking that will work for him long term

No, I wasn’t one of these people, either. Except we stocked up when we saw it was nearly all gone so that we didn’t have to miss out completely. 5:02

What is this guy talking about? People bought tons of toilet paper because they knew the supply would be low. That's it--and I don't even have a PhD!
I stockpiled all my household goods in late February. We don't make those things locally.

I don’t see online shopping as ‘instant gratification’. It’s convenient, sure, but shopping in aus means you’re probably waiting a week or more for it to arrive.
I’d rather be inconvenienced and go to the shops and get the thing straight away. To me that’s more ‘instant gratification’. 😂

I think that is exaclty what he is hired to do! In the usa it is like we are bred to consume and there are sublime messages that make us want and buy more ...they do it when they evoke emotions ! Its very interesting because od been a victim of this for sure

Yes and stores im usa are almost all Big stores even to get your groceries you have to walk through Isle of stuff like Television/phone/smart watch /Clothing/books/small appliances and knickknacks of all sorts, cosmetics , pharmacies, then Junk food , then you get a few veggies in a random less likely possible spots 😅😅😅 think Target, walmart, BJ's, Costco, sams club even small reg groceries are a bit like that but maybe without the appliances 😂

Watching Dollar Tree hauls here on UA-cam could definitely do destruction to people. I have seen a woman spend an average of $85 three times a week just at Dollar Tree. Lots of unnecessary junk. But she gets people to go out and buy every gift bag or greeting card or notebook etc even if they don't need it. It's shocking what someone who makes $4000 a month just on one UA-cam channel can get people who possibly can't pay bills and buy food to spend $85 on crap. Just unnecessary crap. Before I became a monkey see monkey do - because that's easy to have happen- I just didn't watch anymore. I still do buy stuff I don't need or necessarily want, but I am not as bad. I bought one new item for Halloween and let go of about 8 items. I bought one sign at Wal-Mart for Christmas in probably August and I still can't find where I put it 🤔 That says a lot 😮 But I was a far cry from the many new decor items I used to buy each season. I was satisfied with my one item purchases. I still was getting something new and that's exciting. I have vowed to only buy an Easter wreath this year because I don't have one for my door. I might even donate some more items.
