Do you watch come shop with me videos? Whether you do or you don’t, why do you think they are so popular?

    • @kat_thefruitbat

For a few months this year I used to sometimes watch “thrift with me” videos, but I haven’t in a month or so. It just got old and kind of felt like a waste of time to be honest lol…like I started to feel a bit ridiculous when I’d watch it. 😅
That said, I would say that one of the main draws for shopping videos is the same for any form of shop with me video- it’s “the thrill of the find”. Getting a high quality item for a really low price, finding a really unique/special item, finally finding something that’s been on your wishlist for ages, finding “the perfect fit” in a type of garment you’ve been struggling with, (etc…). You get the satisfaction of experiencing the “thrill” through the other person. Of course, one problem with this is the fact that many people don’t stop there….They will ask for a product link, the brand name, the retailer name, and any other details that will make it possible for them to go buy the exact same item or something very similar. 🫠

The feeling of "more" and "better" gets so overwhelming.
We can feel like this about love, family, and material things purely based on what we see others doing online.
Couldn't imagine being a teen during this era.

I love a come thrift with me. They keep you up date with the trends and show how up pick them up cheaply and how to put them together into a outfit. Half the time you’ve already got similar stuff in your wardrobe and just pick up bits and pieces in the thrift shop to make the look. Kathleen Illustrated taught me about outfit formulas and that was such a smart idea

Here’s a perspective… I have a spinal cord injury and can no longer walk big malls anymore. So I love to watch and “window-shop” from the comfort of my bed. Sometimes seeing it in video helps me decide if I truly want something because I get to see someone try it on or give me a 360 look around. Also I like to see how someone styles something in a dressing room or boutique. To take it further it’s almost like going window shopping with a gal pal and for lonely times it feels just a little bit less lonely. I know personally people that have anxiety, depression, chronic pain or are socially awkward and they do not like crowded places for various reasons or are so depressed or in pain and they can’t get out of bed… but they watch these types of videos. I also have friends who have NEVER been in a luxury store because they can’t afford it BUT are genuinely curious to have a look see but feel embarrassed to “just window shop”. Sales associates don’t make it any easier either for someone who knows that can’t afford but just wants to see something in person for curious sake. So I think the shop with me videos or try on and styling ready to wear pieces in dressing room videos are popular for many many reasons. But for one thing I think UA-cam subscribers feel something akin to friendships with the people they subscribe to. And for the anxious or lonely it can be an outlet. Sometimes when people are depressed they may not be up for real conversation and catching up with a friend and UA-cam can be a replacement for that. There’s no pressure in the “friendship” there’s just something entertaining or something they would do when they were feeling better but they can do it from a safe place ie.. home, bed, the hospital etc

I watch come shop with me vids sometimes. They’re nice to see what things look like in real life. Also see things and brands you didn’t know existed. Good to put on in background whilst doing something else. Online shopping will never compare to real life shopping, getting lunch, coffee & cake, carrying the bags like a hunting trophy 🥰

I watch a thrift shopping channel where the person resells the vintage items online. It is just for entertainment. I don’t buy anything. Usually if the seller likes it, I don’t like it. I watch it because of the personality of the seller. Personality goes a long way when seeing a UA-cam channel.

I love shop with me videos! I can care less if someone is going to Target but I love it when they can show me the new luxury collections and what is new for that season. It’s my Saturday morning relaxing cartoons. I recently saw a rare bag in a shopping vlog and was able to get one locally from my SA because I asked and ordered it. But I wouldn’t have known it existed otherwise because a lot of stuff doesn’t show up on websites.
I am fortunate that I live a quick walk from high end boutiques and also enjoy going in person and chatting with sales associates. But a lot of people are too nervous to walk in a store or live far and want to have an idea of what they like or what’s available before booking a trip, waiting in line, etc only to be intimidated or disappointed.

I remember someone commented on a "Come shop with me" type video "Thank you for putting the links to the products - you're so kind" or something to that affect. I replied and said something like "You do know that these are affiliate links and they make a small fee from any sale?". I think a lot of people don't really understand how affiliate links work and the reasons behind these types of videos is to sell product and make the affiliate link money (which is fine). This particular person didn't disclose anywhere that the links were affiliate (I know they were) and I found that this person deliberately didn't disclose them so that they could take advantage of people. I've seen so many UA-camr's not properly disclose affiliate links, gifted items, obvious collaborations/sponsored videos and it is getting worse. I have no issue with sponsored videos, some people come up with really funny/entertaining ways of incorporating them into the video (Jamie French for example). And I understand that this is someones full-time job so I have nothing against it. But it is the ones that don't properly/disclose at all and make people think they are "in love" with or "must have" some crappy item from Amazon which they will make thousands of dollars from the affiliate links which they haven't properly disclosed, as people genuinely trusted and believed them that they liked the product.

I actually enjoy watching them. For me, I like watching people who shop in other countries or a big city like NYC. It's kind of interesting to see how other countries display their products and which products they display. Food shops outside of the US are interesting to see too because I like seeing what they offer that they don't sell here - and just to get the cultural experience!

  • @mwedzi

I only watch them for handbags I'm interested in or handbag brands. Yes, it is like window shopping. Seeing videos of a thing are more informative than still pictures on the website. I get a better sense of the color and proportions. Same reason I watch videos on handbags in general on UA-cam. And you get to see several items in one video. If I could make it to the store, perhaps I would go in person. But sometimes I don't have the time, sometimes a store is not close to me, and also I feel a little pressure being in a store and looking at something I'm actually interested in. Like the sales associate might successfully pressure me into buying it when I'm not ready.

I love your videos and the way you question/analyze why/how things are 😊 And I tend to resonate with your way of thinking, so it always feels like listening to a good friend ☺️
In response to your point about how we used to shop in-person and it seemed like we had more time to do so back then (we are the same age, so that is also how it was for me growing up)…..I think people tend to really underestimate how much time they spend shopping online because they’re mostly doing it here and there throughout the day on their phone, tablet, or computer. For instance, say someone browses and/or shops online retailers for 10 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes during lunch, 5 minutes during a break, 15 minutes while cooking dinner, and another 15 minutes before bed….That’s a whole hour of time spent online shopping in one day. And I bet if we were to ask that same person if they’re able to set aside an hour to shop at a physical store one day this week, they’d likely say “no, sorry, I’m just way too busy”!

    • @kateaye3506

Spot on. And we were accepting of what stores offered pre-internet. Instead of settling for what we found in that hour of in person shopping, we now have hundreds of choices for that one hour of on line shopping.

@@kateaye3506 100% !!! 👍👍 When we feel the urge to look for more when we don’t need it, feel unsatisfied with the good things we already have, or find ourselves wasting valuable time browsing on our phones, we should remind ourselves that we used to get on just fine shopping a few times per year, choosing from what was physically available at the few options we had local access to. I think this is a very grounding reminder!

I watch people go to bookstores, but it is not so much what they buy there, more to be able to be in a bookshop for 20 minutes before making dinner. I've moved to the countryside, so I get to go to a bookstore maybe once a month. Also in my country most bookshops are rather boring, so I like seeing some of the huge ones found in London and USA. If I know I'm going to a bookstore soon, I might watch a few videos of people shopping for books, to get in the mood, to prolong the experience of going to a bookstore. I prefer to buy my books from a physical shop, but I also do buy books online, since I am so far from the shops. Watcing people buy books, does not make me shop for the same or similar books online though (I watch recommendations and reviews for that)

In terms of not shopping at the mall, a good part for myself not going anymore in the U.S is safety and the occurrence of shootings, specifically at malls and lots of public places. Also many stores don’t carry stock or sizes in their stores like they do online so it’s almost a waste. I personally do like come shop with me videos and in a weird way, it’s help me to not spend money because I’m vicariously shopping through them. Very rarely do I see something they buy and buy it as well. I just watch it to satisfy that itch to shop, especially when I’m depressed or on that impulse phase of my adhd

You make some interesting points I had never thought of. Do I watch a lot of 'intentional' go shopping with me type videos? No, with few exceptions and thats mainly to get a preview of what may be coming to stores near me soon but aren't here yet. Also, I live in a SUPER rural area, so do I think it might be WORTH my time to drive 45 minutes to an hour and a half to go to even a target or pottery barn (im obviously not a luxury shopper LOL). often, the fashion or influencers (heck, even the cleaning and decluttering and organizing vloggers I watch- which make up the majority of my youtube stream) are ... background noise or 'mindless tv' so to speak for me, while I go about my own daily life. Have I ever bought anything based off their recommendations? Yes. Have they all been 'winners'? For the most part, yes- but here's why... Whether its clothing (and im buying normal clothes not high street fashion or designer bags) or something to organize or clean with... I have have gotten pretty good at knowing if it is something I will actually wear or use or need. Sometimes I get the exact item item sometimes a similar one (usually based on price, or sometimes I find one similar but with a different feature that will work for me better). Ironically, my 'success' rate with random stuff say off amazon or other website on impulse purchase, or even items in thrift stores or local shops is much lower. I've gotten MUCH better over the past couple of years, but I'm still working on that.

Guilty as charged! I actually like “Come Shopping With Me” luxury videos. I live in a city that is sorely lacking in luxury shops (LV and Gucci pretty much sum it up). I do a fair amount of traveling, and if I see something in a video it lets me cut to the chase instead of just wandering around aimlessly when I’m in another city. Basically, I’m lazy and I’m cool with letting others do the legwork for me. I have never used a link though. I’m sure I’ll get bored with them at some point. I’m likely looking for a specific style, and I watch the video to see what’s available. I’m wanting to avoid wasting my time and gas to drive across town to Kirkland’s, and chance them not having what I’m looking for.
Also the UA-camr shows the item up close and that helps me judge the size and quality of the item. I will then go to their website and see if that item is available in the local store. If all is good, I will then make the trip the next time I’m out and about.
This is the same reason I only look at Amazon reviews that have photos.
When it comes to clothing, I find the haul videos more helpful than the Shop with Me. I’d rather see how the clothing fits on the person.

I don’t like to go to the mall because it’s filled with preteens hanging out. Recently, I bought a very nice designer blazer online. The sleeves were a bit long so I went to the store from which I purchased it to see if they had a different size. They don’t stock that particular designer in the store that they sell online. I am finding that stores in the Los Angeles area are stocking, fewer, and fewer items and letting people do their shopping online. I’m sure this saves the store money by not having so much merchandise on the floor. Definitely shopping has changed.

The mall is just one small bit of the social interaction we've lost. Outside of work and school so many of us are barely leaving our homes at all. Makes one wonder where exactly to sport these designer items. I wonder how many sit in a closet.

Where I live, the malls are losing stores and some used to have food courts, and some stores are just getting filled with younger clothing brands . Also, so of course I am getting older but I have gotten disabled and need a walker, yes getting around the mall is okay, but there aren't a lot of seating and once you are inside some of these stores - they have tiny spaces, it's hard for disabled people to get around inside of the stores. It's just sad for me to shop.
This 1 mall near me got rid of my FAVORITE restaurant. Now, the only thing I do in there is go to the theatre in the 1 section at the end. I go like once a year if that. I usually wait for movies to come out on tv. Because of my disability mobility.
Shopping in person is just not made for disable people. It's depressing.
I know someone since the pandemic has gotten agnorphorbia - fear of leaving the home. It's a mixture of covid, germs, people yelling at each other for no reason, people recording each other and taking photos of each other when they are dressed in pjs or sweats, and I do not know what is going on in Australia - but here in the USA, there's like a shooting once a week now in different states and it's all over the place at schools, parks, events, malls, stores, grocery stores. It's nuts out there. I'm even afraid sometimes to go out. But this person I know is a single mom to 2 young children and so she's afraid of something happening to her - what would happen to her kids? So she has something to fight for and stay home for is what she thinks. She just buys everything off Amazon. It's really sad.

Online window shopping is more enjoyable than in person window shopping because there is no pressure. If you go into a store in the real world you're always being hassled by sales associates. You feel rushed and you feel guilty if you don't buy something because you know that the sales associate who has dedicated time to "helping you" is paid on commission.

New subscriber here! ❤ Love your content and your approach! Personally, I enjoyed “Shop with me” type of videos up until recently when I realized they are making me spend a lot of money so I stopped. I only watch Thrift with me type of videos now. I love seeing people finding some gems in thrift stores and also love not having an option to waste my money on pieces I don’t really need. 😊

oh some people like me watch the videos to see what people are seeing in main stores because we are disabled and can't get out much and when we do "will it be a waste of our trip? or will we want what's in the stores?" That's why I like seeing the videos for the holidays and new lineups for spring, summer collections. I just hate it when I see something I like, go to the same store and it's not there. I'm talking Home Goods.

I indulge in home decor style videos where yes the links are attached but they are showing it inside their home, where its styled already. But 'come shop with me' at the mall, for clothing, shoes, etc has always been boring.

For me it really depends. There are a few creators that do midsize come shop with me videos where they try on the clothes as well, sometimes from brands that I like, but don't have anywhere near me. I really like watching those, simply to see how the clothes look on a body that's not 5ft9 and a size XS. Other than that I find them pretty boring.

I do like to watch "come shop with me vids" for holiday time for stores for home decor or mugs or throws. I like it when people go in and show the aisle, but I hate it when they zoom fast over it and if they zoom in, it's only on 1 section, and here I am in the audience going "go over one more shelf I want to see that mug, or bag or whaever" and they don't! It will literally go to another aisle, like wait a second. That's what I don't like about them.
But I like it when they also show them at home or in the car showing off what they buy and sometimes they show off the bag on the inside or the dress on because for some reason they couldn't show it on while in the store.
But yes... I am so nervous about filming in the stores because I am afraid of people telling me to not film so kudos to people that do.

I'm not into them, the only ones I watch are if by chance someone I already follow is doing one. And even those people have started to cut back on them. I do my shopping both online and in person, it just depends on what I have going on and how I'm feeling. Online shopping was a godsend for me over the past year while I waited and have been recovering from major surgery since I was unable to go in person.

it’s also a privilege and a luxury to shop the way many influencers shop. Though I don’t watch “Go Shop…” videos, I doubt we'll find a “Go Shop with me at Ross,” Marshalls, or The Goodwill! 🤣 it seems a lot of the shopping videos are inspirational rather than realistic.

If you like watching cheaper shopping videos they have “come thrift with me” vids. I really like them coz they give me ideas of how to wear what I have and maybe add a little thing here or there from the thrift shop to update it. Kathleen Illustrated’s channel is good for this :)

I really dislike shopping vlogs too. I find them so boring, especially ones at preloved luxury stores. If you don't go to that specific store, how the heck are you supposed to shop for that?! LOL. The only ones I find of value are Chanel vlogs because I hate the snooty attitudes in that store so it saves me from having to go in there to figure out if it's even worth it! Also like watching dermatologists who go into drug stores or Target to talk about which OTC skincare products are worth buying since they're MDs who know what they're talking about in terms of active ingredients, and it's free advice! Otherwise, I skip shopping vlogs :) Oh and we're Gen Xers not Boomers--we're called the "forgotten generation" for a reason I guess! Ha ha!

I like to shop with me a lot. I live in a very small town. There are not a lot of shops, choice is poor and the prices are high.
Bigger city is an hour away and I have to spend the whole Saturday to go there. Working hours allow me to go there only on weekends but in Poland shops are closed on Sundays. On the other hand we have a very good delivery system. If I order stuff online I will have it the next day. So other than clothing or shoes that I have to try on I buy everything online.
I like to shop with me videos as inspiration for outfit ideas and as substitution for actual shopping because I have problems with buying way too many unnecessary things.

I watch 'Go shop with me videos'. I usually fast forward to the hauls. It's just so pointless as an Aussie watching these videos because a large majority of them are in the US so if by chance we want to buy something the person has purchased then it's really difficult to find it and we pay a big price with the conversion buying it online
I still remember when my mum would take me shopping at the beginning of the year to buy dress code clothing for school and maybe mid year school holidays too. That was enough shopping to make us happy. Now multiple parcels arriving per day is just average as over consumers. We really don't appreciate stuff the same anyone.

I don't watch 'Come Shop With Me' videos. Nor do I watch any haul videos outside of makeup. However, it irks me when makeup YTbers beg for subs, super thanks, Patreon etc, then do a YSL or Chanel haul video. I can barely afford life as it is, yet these greedy YTbers are begging of their viewers??
I had no idea how much these videos make. And to think I go to work 6 days a week, get dirty, work at a physically demanding trade to pull that money for a fortnight. I am NEVER supporting window shoppers in doing that for a career.

I have watched those videos, but I don't like them very much. I watched one about shopping at Harrod's when I was going to London to see if it was worth going there. I think I prefer shopping online because it's easier to find specific products. I wasted a lot of time looking for 100% cotton sheets at the mall, and I found them immediately online. Before online shopping I would probably have caved and bought sheets that weren't 100% cotton.
