I always wonder about the price to do these modifications/repairs in y’all’s videos. Would be super cool for the non-car-expert viewers if you included an estimation of the prices.

Okay, this is my favorite video so far. I use a variation of the magnaflux machine for a living. Except I use it for different parts. I thought it was great because I’ve actually inspected a differential gear ring once before at my shop! Insane!

Let us all just take a moment and appreciate the craftsmanship here. When someone asks “why is that so expensive?” Many times it’s because there are men who have put in the time, sweat, and blood and know for a fact what they are doing through and through. This gives me a weird sense of comfort and appreciation. And I’m the weird guy who watches every Sunday and knows little to nothing about cars. Great content guys. I’m relieved to know I’m not the only one with an ATS “super silent” that isn’t exactly what I would consider quiet, let alone silent haha. It’s held up to some pretty hard abuse in my FD, launching at the track on drag radials, so I think you’ll be pleased!
The secret to not grenade an FD diff is PRELOAD the drivetrain before launching. The inner torsens have a bit of slack which allows too much play with the drive shaft. When launching without loading, you're basically impact/jack hammering the internal torsen gears as the driveshaft will free spin a little bit before the gears engaged internally. Preloading seats all the gears.
@7:28 - just how much blood did he get all over this diff?! This video was well worth the wait - extremely informative for me as I don't have any differential experience (from a rebuild perspective)

Could you guys have Jon do a crash coarse on some automotive technology that doesn't get much coverage? I always love learning some new quirks and features.
An excellent vid, albeit one that might *perhaps* give viewers the impression that FD diffs are fragile. Having had mine for nine years and done a few trackdays, I've not encountered any diff problems nor heard of it being an issue outside of big-power drag cars. It's important to remember that the RX-7 is a quarter-tonne lighter than most 276hp-class rivals, without using any exotic materials. You don't shave that kind of weight by making anything thicker, stronger or heavier than it needs to be. As a piece of precision engineering, most parts of the FD are strong enough for normal enthusiastic use; however they don't have the extra margin for "abuse" in the way that a Mustang or Camaro might. That's part of the tradeoff for a lighter car. Don't worry, I understand this is UA-cam not real life. You made an amusing video breaking the diff, and now you've made a really informative and enthralling technical one replacing it with an upgraded part that'll stand up to burning out sticky tyres. So yeah, not a complaint at all, love the channel - just want to put the 'weak' diff aspect into context for other viewers 🙂
That diff was nuked, holy moly! That one dude that has all that knowledge like a professor would be awesome to talk to. All these people actually. This is a great video!
I would advice getting a diff brace the attaches to the subframe and not just a diff cradle. The cradle will not stop the front of the diff from moving up and down causing the pinion gear to walk down the ring gear!!
"If your magnetic drain plug has got chunks on it, then its bad." Not sure about that, I think if your diff has been split in half and is void of all oil that things are pretty bad
