Howdy viewer. Here's a little preamble to this video for context. This is a paired down and censored version of the original video released on the 19th of October. UA-cam flagged it as inappropriate for ads, so I had to excise a pretty big chunk from the video. Case in point: my entire review of Phantasmagoria 2 was removed! In addition to that, there are many small edits made to avoid "excessive" violence or mention of heavy topics. When talking about a game, I always like to have a balanced discussion on the cultural significance of certain aspects of that game, even when those subjects are controversial. I was careful to give ample warning, censor, and provide context, but the algorithm cares not for such things (and especially not the latter of those three). They even have the out-of-place coo-coo clock shop in Munich which sells those exclusively to Americans. Because what kind of imbecile would buy one of those? And in Munich of all places. I was always so confused when I walked past it. Somebody actually went to Munich, took fotos, soaked in the atmosphere, hired actors(exclusively from Schwabing by the looks of it), spotted the shop and was not savvy enough to spot the usual tourist trap. Also, the Bavarian cop has the German flag on his desk. Somebody went to great lengths but you can tell where they overruled the local advisers to make it look more plausible for their American audience. The game gets a lot right. But it betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of our Germanic circle-jerk. They got the German historical context of Ludwig II right. They got the Munich Schickeria vibe right. But they completely managed to forget they were telling a very Bavarian story in Bavaria even if it only was Munich and completely filter out everything Bavarian. A Bavarian cop with a black-red-gold flag on his desk without at least also displaying the bavarian flag is prime indication somebody confuses the Small World ride at Disney with the real world. Watching this revision anyway 'cause everything was so well articulated and a pleasure to listen to. Glad I caught the original before it went down all the same (although keeping it up on Patreon for free is extremely generous of you!)--that Phantasmagoria 2 review was a real treat after seeing some of it on the Game Grumps with Roberta and Paul Morgan Stetler. Granted, I'd be lying if I said it WASN'T suspicious that youtube is fine with footage about Harvester--an over the top gorefest--versus Phantasmagoria 2, a game that's primarily about a bisexual dude in love with his friend that is nowhere NEAR as bad in terms of graphic violence.
@@malakianknightTwo things, one, you're not using irony correctly, and B, comments help the algorithm, and that statement got you to comment, didn't it?
Another absolute banger, thanks Maj. Would love to see the original upload as I entirely missed it and it seems your P2 deep dive was quite interesting. Also thank you again for the Oblivion links, I'm still conking out on them from time to time!
55:21 Look I’m not saying that shoehorning “Shady Realtor Majuular” as a voice actor to these games would have saved all of them, but I *am* saying that it wouldn’t have hurt.
I was literally watching the Phantasmagoria 2 review, clicked away, then it was gone. I can't stand this website anymore. Great video regardless! Thank you for making the full video public elsewhere!
1:37:55 I got emotional simply hearing you recount the story of Gabriel Knight 2. You really brought the conflict between these two men to life for me. I legitimately had no idea that fmv games ever got so complex in themes or storytelling.
Watched the full version on Patreon and I love the Tim Curry appreciation. The man could voice the personification of an evil computer virus in a 90's adaptation of Gridman starring Joey Lawrence and he would still give it his all.
I'm surprised Goosebumps Escape From Horrorland wasn't on here. It's probably one of the best examples of a really well-done FMV horror (for kids) game in the 90s.
Glad I was able to watch the "original" version of this video in full. And I will now watch this, just to boost the algorithm. Man, you deserve so much praise for your videos, Majuular! Haven't watched anything but your videos for days now.
@@Majuular no, he is insinuating that he became sexually aroused watching that clip and went into the bathroom to masturbate. hope I was able to clear that up for you.
Your essay has not only helped me focus on being able to gruel through my animation, but I've come to appreciate FMV games, especially Gabriel Knighy 2.
Aw man, the Phantasmagoria 2 part getting cut is tragic, I recall fondly the times in my youth watching the original Spoony videos for that game. Glad I caught the og upload!
You can check out the actor for Curtis play random adventure games and talk with the other actors from P2. On Conversations with Curtis youtube channel. TheSpoonyOne is on his streams often.
Because UA-cam sucks and made you take down the full version, I'm gonna give my first ever 'Super Thanks Hyper Fighting Turbo Rainbow Edition' or whatever these are called then watch the free Patreon version. Here is to more great videos in the future!
My favourite Sierra deep cut is Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls - it doesn't just have cheesy FMV acting, it has cheesy FMV _music videos_ - the whole thing is aggressively late-90s and I love it so much.
Ah man this blows, the Phantasmagoria 2 part was my favorite of the original upload, got me legit interested in the game. This site's so annoying, good on you for trucking through the mess
For the record Myst was huge largely because a lot of people were buying PCs with much-hyped CD-ROM drives, and it was a natural sell to show off what it could do outside of Encarta or Isaac Asimov’s Library of the Universe or whatever. For normies it was even exciting with near-screensaver-level interactivity, because people were *super into screensavers* in the 90s Also cannot be overstated how big Myst was. a Family Computer Room without a copy of Myst nearby was almost like finding a SNES owner without Super Mario World
One of the creators of Myst mentioned how most people he meets who played it in the 90's absolutely LOVED the game Yet they always say they never got past the first island section lol.
UA-cam can't appreciate fine art criticisms these days. Legit, though, your videos are always a joy to watch, and your input and analysis of these games have helped me broaden my scope of different games. I will gladly rewatch this vid.
The crazy part is that there are so many SCAT commando teams! There's the titular SCAT team of a NES game, there's SCAT from Operation Winback, there's Night Trap's SCAT, and there are probably more out there.
The thing I like best about Majuular’s collective reviews like this video isn’t the curiosities and weird/funny games he finds, it’s when he finds something he’s truly impressed by and appreciates. Even though cult classics of varying genres are getting new attention these days, I think Maj gives them the fairest and most sincere respect out of most others. Glad you keep doing you, big guy. 👍
Gabriel 2 infamous pigeon puzzle was were my father and I remained stuck and hence never finished the game. Much love, man, even more for putting up with the tube nonsense 🙏
Always happy to see an upload on this channel :) Watched the whole thing on Patreon, many thanks for making that one public! Most shocking thing in that video was finding out Gabriel is voiced by Tim "SPACE" Curry.
I’m so glad I was able to catch the original upload and get your opinions on Phantasmagoria 2. I remember Spoony playing through it when I was younger and it was one of my favorite series of his. Now you’re my favorite creator because of the overall style of your videos, you hit the biggest nostalgic part of my heart and I look forward to every upload you put out. Never played Xenogears til I saw your video on it and I put 200hrs into it afterward.
Between Ultima and Phantasmagoria 2, it seems that Spoony haunts these hallowed halls. As for Xenogears, I don't know whether to celebrate or apologize, but I hope it left the same kind of impression on you that it did on me.
@@Majuular celebrate in despair is the way I like to put it. It’s an amazing game but I will say I came out of it slightly depressed lol and idk if it’s because of the themes and story or the game, or if it’s from the fact that I played through its entirety. It’s an experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything. Although I am glad I played it 30 instead of as a kid so I could fully grasp the plot, unlike FF7 where I didn’t understand anything that was going on when I first played through it at 7yrs. Thanks for the response it made my day! Looking forward to your next upload!
Thank goodness I watched Phantasmagoria 2 section last night and waited to finish to today. Great work as always, and glad to see you've managed to find your own video game related "dungeon". 😄
"At the Dead of Night" is a pretty fun look at a modern game that does it's best to be a 90's fmv game. Also seeing you without the fluffy neck injury collar feels so strange. Understandable that you don't want to keep wearing it though.
Is that Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers I hear? Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well... Great video, as always! I love watching (and re-watching, then re-watching yet again) your stuff. :)
The video subject, the sarcastic jokes and the accurate reviews of my childhood games You deliever in all 3 thank you so much you are a very good video-man
@@hanashi5727 half the people I've heard say it have the same accent I do. They aren't pronouncing Tylenol as Tylinyl. And they aren't going to pronounce paracetamol as paracetamyl. I think you might be my favorite content creator that I discovered this year. One of my earliest gaming memories was a goosebumps FMV adventure game (something to do with horrorland?), and the hammy, jarring presentation stuck with me for...like 25 years now. I'm glad you covered this strange era of gaming.
Yes! I actually considered both that and an Are You Afraid of the Dark game for the video. Ultimately decided against them for reasons of timeliness, but they are mega cheesy. Thank you for the kind words!
I love FMV games so much. It was such an interesting time in video game history. Harvest is probably my favorite. I know it’s not that great of a game…but it’s absolutely bananas premise and presentation really jives with me
Commenting for the engagement after the takedown. Video was excellent, I checked it out on Patreon. Such a genuinely cool and interesting time and place in the world of video games and you put one hell of a lens on it.
Ever since I found your xenogears essay you’ve become my favourite gaming channel. Your taste really speaks to my tastes and your videos are so detailed
I'm glad I got to see the uncensored version, and I'm excited to give this version my full attention too, so my viewing sticks around. Your work is some I enjoy immensely, thank you for not letting youtube keep you down!
That tickled the back of my brain when I heard it, but couldn’t place it (for some insane reason; I’ve listened to that album so many times!). Thanks ;)
Awesome video as always. I never had a PC as a kid so I missed a lot of these puzzle, FMV, “weird games.” The scariest part of the video though is that the format change now has me knowing that Majuular is a dreamboat. Wtf.
It looks like UA-cam suddenly has a phobia against Phantasmagoria 2: They recently slammed Ross Scott's retrospective of it so hard, he had to take it off the platform, even though he intentionally made it age-restricted for the uncensored content.
Yeah, and on some level I can understand why the game is dicey for UA-cam (insofar as they're now ridiculously cautious about advertising guidelines these days). I tried to cover everything without being explicit about it, but I think the person replying here is right. It's quite possible that just mentioning the name Phantasmagoria 2 flags the video at this point. I also think my written warning about the sexual/violent content might have played a part, which is ironic cuz I put it there specifically so people DIDN'T have to see anything untoward.
I remember Tim Curry also reprising his role in the Muppet Treasure Island FMV game from back in the day. Though my favorite casting in any of the old FMVs had to be Jeff Goldblum as Dracula in Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland
Well I must comment again to help the algorithms. Glad ive seen the full video already. Hopefully youtube allows this version to move forward. Keep it up Maj!
Thanks again Matt. I seriously doubt that it'll find it's footing in the same way, but I'm not too busted up about it. Just a lesson learned. Lots of people liking and rewatching is a big help
55:19 For the Phantasmagoria realtor some states (but not where the game is set) DO have laws regarding realtors disclosing if a property is haunted in the US. I thought there were more, but a Google search shows just NJ (realtor has to disclose but only if you ask) and NY (realtor only has to disclose if they've dislosed to the general public already).
Something I really appreciate about Majuular is that even though he's a straight, loveable curmudgeon, he doesn't ignore or straight up deny queerness in the games he talks about like many _other_ men in his position making similar content do. It makes me feel like I'm welcome to the party and not something to be swept under the rug.
27:41 ok but imagine being 9 years old and playing this on the computer in a dark living room at night. That maze was absolute nightmare fuel. I was bracing for a jump scare so hard back then that I’m surprised I didn’t have a heart attack
Thank you yet again for delivering such a humorous, informative, and thoughtful deep dive into niche topics 🖤 Shame that the YT censorbots struck again, but it was really cool of you to open the Patreon video for everyone! Glad to hear you vibed with Trevor and Curtis' (doomed) friendship in the uncut vid (still watched, liked, commented on this one for the algorithm). Don's "So what?" was giving me Nic Cage in Vampire's Kiss energy, great edit 😂
It's fun because I was born in 1982, in a rural french area. Moved next to a medium city (Nancy). I discovered arcade games when my little brother told me an arcade place opened...in 2000's. My first console was a Game Boy, my first game experience was Scarab of Ra on my dad's Apple LCII. I'm nostalgic about things I didn't know or played. This aesthetic is rooted in me and it's really mysterious. Why ? I don't know. Maybe the old VHS style, the outfits, the beginning of my awareness of games. So...I love this era. And seeing let's play or essays makes me very happy. Thank you for this slice of fantasmed life of mine.
Maybe a part two could include Realms of the Haunting, Killing Time, and others that don't exactly fit the usual fmv adventure game formula. Great video!
Majuular tapped into that exact Western gaming niche when everyone tried to turn movies (and books) into interactive entertainment. But didn't had the right technology or know-how yet. Another brilliant coverage.

Coca Cola fears Phantasmagoria 2. Thank you for watching again!
@@davidmortimer9764 the fact that you think UA-cam has a problem with lgtv representation is peak irony.
@@malakianknightTwo things, one, you're not using irony correctly, and B, comments help the algorithm, and that statement got you to comment, didn't it?
To be fair, being "unfriendly to advertisers" is a little like stakes being unfriendly to vampires.
god that episode was amazing, gotta love when crew/cast members revisit their old work.
Same.
I fell asleep during that part bc remember him going over it then woke up and was gone haha
And then influence the performance of the dub actor for the villain in the Gridman sequel anime, because why not, meat-thing?
I'm surprised Goosebumps Escape From Horrorland wasn't on here. It's probably one of the best examples of a really well-done FMV horror (for kids) game in the 90s.
Glad I was able to watch the "original" version of this video in full. And I will now watch this, just to boost the algorithm. Man, you deserve so much praise for your videos, Majuular! Haven't watched anything but your videos for days now.
Thanks so much, that's awesome to hear!
I see why it was removed. That choking scene of the girl in a night gown sent me to the bathroom for 40mins.
t...to throw up from terror... right??
@@Majuular no, he is insinuating that he became sexually aroused watching that clip and went into the bathroom to masturbate. hope I was able to clear that up for you.
@@MajuularI had massive diarrhea after
underrated comment
You got a poopy boiler suit fetish?
A new Majuular video is basically a nostalgia overdose even when its a game you never played. Man knows how to write 'em!
I heard that, Curtis!
Because UA-cam sucks and made you take down the full version, I'm gonna give my first ever 'Super Thanks Hyper Fighting Turbo Rainbow Edition' or whatever these are called then watch the free Patreon version. Here is to more great videos in the future!
UA-cam thanks you for your $3 donation.
Thanks so much Mario, really appreciate it. Let's just call this the modern day version of a video rental.
Was holding my breath to see if Harvester was mentioned!
My favourite Sierra deep cut is Shivers 2: Harvest of Souls - it doesn't just have cheesy FMV acting, it has cheesy FMV _music videos_ - the whole thing is aggressively late-90s and I love it so much.
Watching again and commenting to try and help the algorithm.
Cheers Bass. You being a person of lordly caliber is already such a huge help too!
Juuuuuuust in case
Watching the full version with this on the background, thanks for letting us see the other one!
Thank you for doing that!
Doing the same! Glad big M provided a way to still view the original.
For normies it was even exciting with near-screensaver-level interactivity, because people were *super into screensavers* in the 90s
Also cannot be overstated how big Myst was. a Family Computer Room without a copy of Myst nearby was almost like finding a SNES owner without Super Mario World
One of the creators of Myst mentioned how most people he meets who played it in the 90's absolutely LOVED the game
Yet they always say they never got past the first island section lol.
Watching again and commenting for the algorithm! The Phantasmagoria 2 was an interesting section and I'm glad the Gabriel Knight section wasn't cut!
Thankfully nothing about ol' Mr. Knight was enough to set off the UA-cam alarm... well, at least not that I'm aware of.
UA-cam can't appreciate fine art criticisms these days.
Legit, though, your videos are always a joy to watch, and your input and analysis of these games have helped me broaden my scope of different games.
I will gladly rewatch this vid.
SCAT team commando. What a job title
It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it...
The crazy part is that there are so many SCAT commando teams! There's the titular SCAT team of a NES game, there's SCAT from Operation Winback, there's Night Trap's SCAT, and there are probably more out there.
Props for the Porcupine Tree reference. Criminally underrated band
Just here to say thanks for the full version. Wanted to bring some traffic to the listed video too.
Stoked to have found your channel. Great stuff, big one!
Commenting to thank you for the full version on patreon.
One of my fave commentators reviewing one of my fave genres. Majuular, you're a very special boy.
Supplanting Tony and prime special boy at last... I can rest.
Thanks so much for the super thanks, it is greatly appreciated 🙏
Dont let the bastards get you down!
Just found your channel. Great work, thank you!
Thank you for all your hard work! You are a UA-cam gem 💎 (and screw Joe Lieberman)
Thanks very much! Joe can't hurt us anymore... at least I don't think he can...
Adding my rewatch, like, and comment to do my part to boost the re-upload. Really enjoyed the original on Patreon, thank you for doing that.
Gabriel 2 infamous pigeon puzzle was were my father and I remained stuck and hence never finished the game. Much love, man, even more for putting up with the tube nonsense 🙏
Always happy to see an upload on this channel :)
Watched the whole thing on Patreon, many thanks for making that one public!
Most shocking thing in that video was finding out Gabriel is voiced by Tim "SPACE" Curry.
Glad I caught the original version, but I’m happy to rewatch for the algorithm. Thanks Maj!
At dead of night is most definitely a modern day fmv game done right.
Its terrifying as well.
Glad I caught the uncut version before it went down. Quality stuff as usual. UA-cam really needs humans to check videos manually.
Thanks! I enjoyed the original upload. Sorry that UA-cam is what it is now
Is that Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers I hear? Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well...
Great video, as always! I love watching (and re-watching, then re-watching yet again) your stuff. :)
The video subject, the sarcastic jokes and the accurate reviews of my childhood games
You deliever in all 3 thank you so much you are a very good video-man
0:41 I'm blaming politicians for this, but I need to start the ball rolling on getting people to stop pronouncing "Fentanyl" as "Fentinol"
Wait till you find out about accents and how they make words sound completely different...
@@hanashi5727 half the people I've heard say it have the same accent I do. They aren't pronouncing Tylenol as Tylinyl. And they aren't going to pronounce paracetamol as paracetamyl.
In fact I'm blaming common customer-facing medication names for why people are mentally promoted to pronounce the nyl as nol.
HUGE fan of this one. What a great idea for a video topic, perfect execution, I mean its amazing. I'm on like, my 4th rewatch already
Watched the patreon version, now watching the youtube version because it showed up in my feed. I'm gonna try to spot all the differences
I'm glad I got to see the uncensored version, and I'm excited to give this version my full attention too, so my viewing sticks around. Your work is some I enjoy immensely, thank you for not letting youtube keep you down!
40:24 You’re not gonna slip a Porcupine Tree reference past me, friend
I saw that too, love to see it
That tickled the back of my brain when I heard it, but couldn’t place it (for some insane reason; I’ve listened to that album so many times!). Thanks ;)
Awesome video as always. I never had a PC as a kid so I missed a lot of these puzzle, FMV, “weird games.”
The scariest part of the video though is that the format change now has me knowing that Majuular is a dreamboat. Wtf.
It looks like UA-cam suddenly has a phobia against Phantasmagoria 2: They recently slammed Ross Scott's retrospective of it so hard, he had to take it off the platform, even though he intentionally made it age-restricted for the uncensored content.
I wonder if _mentioning_ Phantasmagoria 2 is what UA-cam got mad about.
I also think my written warning about the sexual/violent content might have played a part, which is ironic cuz I put it there specifically so people DIDN'T have to see anything untoward.
what really? nooo! ross's video was on my halloween rewatch list ever since it came out. the season's just a little less magical now
@@opiumskittles For what it's worth, it's been reuploaded by another channel!
That Ross video is legendary. Just like his other ones
FMV Horror is such a niche topic that's always been a fave of mine so it's a joy to see a long video about this exact topic!
based on the 3d intro, you are in the same cinematic universe as Civvie and possibly can find Ross' game dungeon.
the Holy Trinity
I remember Tim Curry also reprising his role in the Muppet Treasure Island FMV game from back in the day. Though my favorite casting in any of the old FMVs had to be Jeff Goldblum as Dracula in Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland
Of course I fell asleep during the Phantasmagoria 2 section and that’s what was cut lmao
Just found your channel. Great stuff
Hey thanks very much for the tip Austin, appreciate it! Hope you're digging the videos.
Caught the full thing last night. Watching again for engagement algorithm.
Thank you for your hard work! Great video!
I am thrilled that I managed to watch this in its entirety last night. It's a grand work, regardless of the meddling.
my man back with another banger!
Obligatory algorithm pleasing comment engagement for boosting my man
This channel has easily become my favorite channel over this year.
You are probably my favourite content creator right now. Please make more and more and more of these and never stop.
Yeah, the gaming community is a hive of misogyny, homophobia, and racism. Fun times. I have to be very discerning in who I consume and what I read.
27:41 ok but imagine being 9 years old and playing this on the computer in a dark living room at night. That maze was absolute nightmare fuel. I was bracing for a jump scare so hard back then that I’m surprised I didn’t have a heart attack
I'm literally watching the other version on youtube right now, I'm at the P2 section too 😭
You just expended a year's worth of luck lmao
Fantastic work as always dude. Sucks that UA-cam won't lay off.
Disrespectful to you I’d say. Here’s some manual revenue while I go and watch the patron version lol
Hey hey, you're too kind. Hope you ended up enjoying the video!
There were plenty of Japanese FMV games too, D is a good example
@@stripedhyenuh which were inspired from the western movement. Kenji Eno is pretty blatant about his inspirations.
I was half way through the unlisted version when I noticed it was indeed unlisted. UA-cam really hates the gays, huh? Sorry Trevor & Curtis
I always forget Phantasmagoria exists because there’s too many games with long one word titles beginning with P: Pathologic, Phasmophia, Pseudoregalia
Pseudoregalia and Pathologic mentioned lets go
