      The later one with the pancakes? Two things can be true, I guess. It definitely seems like they were aware they were over-exaggerating hoping for that "so bad it's good" feel but instead achieving "so bad it's beyond pathetic and I feel sympathy for everyone who tried to steer them clear of this but were ignored"

    I honestly don't understand why people were legitimately angry about this. Suspicious, sure, I understand that. That campaign was fishy. And wanting answers was very reasonable. But getting mad? Yeah, the game is bad, but that's why people were even interested in it in the first place. It's a piece of video game history, and that makes it worth something. Producing more legitimate copies and selling them to the public is also a huge boon to video game preservation. Selling a bad game is not some terrible sin, especially when the people selling it aren't trying to advertise it as a good game.

    • @shibafox
      @shibafox 2 місяці тому +65

      This exactly, I understand fans being upset about their fave content creators "selling out" but capitalizing on the publicity to sell more copies- even through a KS, which turned out to be legit- doesn't seem like it should be controversial.
      People were buying it due to the novelty- not because it was a good game, they already knew the game was total ass.
      Honesty I'd consider getting a copy because it IS a funny story and moment from video game history, and I'm sure AF not paying thousands for a copy.

      Admittedly, the bar for controversies back on early UA-cam (even if I'd argue 2012 is the very tail end of that era) were rock bottom. There were some issues at the fringes - deleting criticism, skepticism at the people involved - but that's not unusual for any project of this nature
      "Well, why endorse a bad game on purpose?"

Our audience demands reinvention and is always looking for what's new. As tempting as it is to squeeze something to the end, we made what we think is the right, tough choice to end the show on top.")
      2012 was the year of the mayan apocalypse hysteria, I don't get why people make shit up when there's way funnier "believed 2012 was the end of the world because the mayan calendar ends in 2012 of the Gregorian calendar" shit that got claimed and believed. (as aside, mayan calendars are 400 years long. they just didn't get to make the 2013-2412 calendar, that's why it stops at 2012. That they made that many calendars is already impressive enough, it's like if our calendar companies made calendars for 3015 and you could buy them in stores.)
      - The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. (This (and the one below) is from NASA, btw. That they had to talk about the woowoo imaginary planet from ancient alien conspiracies seriously at all is both amusing and depressing.)
      - Other rumors - that the Earth's magnetic field will suddenly reverse or that the planet will travel almost 30,000 light-years and fall into the black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy - were also dismissed. (A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, or about 6 trillion miles, or 10 trillion km.)
      - This rumor, circulating in spam emails, claims that NASA is predicting a total Earth blackout between Dec. 23 and Dec. 25 [of 2012]. Some emails claim that this blackout will occur as the result of the sun and Earth aligning for the first time, while others spin a wild tale about Earth entering "a still ring" called the Photonic belt [and turning into "galactic humans" in the "Age of Light" through DNA mutations]. Whatever the alleged cause, this is simply not going to happen, according to NASA. "There is no such alignment," agency officials write. (from yahoo news)

    Ironically, Concord is to Sony what Cheetahmen was to that guy. Indeed, Sony seriously intended Concord to be an entire franchise (and not just any random franchise, but their flagship franchise that they would be known for), including several games, animated series (which they would, and in fact will be publishing on Netflix), paraphernalia, etc. And, just like Cheetahmen, Concord failed spectacularly.
    Difference is that Cheetahmen cost a few thousands bucks to make, and was made in a few months, while Concord cost hundreds of millions and took 8 years to make.

    I think what people forget during this whole incident is that Kickstarter/Indiegogo/online crowdfunding wasn't exactly a well-known concept to the masses, remember, this wasn't 2012/2013 when there were nothing but kickstarters left and right for everything under the sun - this was still 2009/2010, and people thought you could make enough money off ad revenue on UA-cam. The exact same situation happened when James announced the AVGN movie Indiegogo shortly after, he was very humble and honest about his pitch and how weird it felt to be e-begging, and people just TROUNCED on him, saying that he's going to keep scamming people by using only the intended 75,000 to make the movie and POCKET the remaining 300k for himself, not knowing anything about how movies are made, to the point where they compared it to Kickassia, as if it was some sort of standard.
    That was kind of a death for old-school AVGN (for those that cared, at least) because a LOT of people turned on him and just started being mean for no reason, which didn't help later on when the AVGN movie dropped and it wasn't particularly good.

Yeah, it's a shit game, and the people that will buy it are literally buying it because it's such a shit game. And the guy that did it has no obligation to use his own money to do it. People can buy into the kickstarter or not. It's there to start businesses, not as a charity. He delivered on his promise, so that's good business in my eyes.
