You have quickly become one of my favorite gaming creators on here, rivaling civvie, mandalore, grimbeard, and sean seanson. The distinctly laid back vibe you always bring to your videos and oftentimes niche Japanese games you cover gives you a pretty distinct voice that stands out among your contemporaries. Keep up the great work man!
That’s huge. I mean, I love all of those creators and have taken inspiration from them, so it’s not a competition for me. But thanks for the kind words.
Check out Marsh for more obscure stuff. He mostly does SMT but also some rpg maker games. His newest is a super unknown ps1 horror game called Hellnight

@@dungeonchill Dude it's awesome how fast your channel, and for that matter all the top notch video essay guys channels have been growing lately, some awesome synergy there, keep it up man!
You have no idea how grateful I am that you put subtitles in, I have a huge tendency to get distracted if subtitles aren't on the screen but yours have them and I can watch the entire video without getting distracted! Thank you for that, I really appreciate it.
Especially because we're getting exact text as opposed to auto generated. So I too appreciate it. My kids have made it so I can't hear unless there are words to read along to.

Thanks a lot for investing your time and for creating this mesmerising video!
One of my favorite genres. I kind of wish they'd set one of these on another planet in the oceans of neptune or something, but real life fish are alien enough
This and the guy who makes those history of Ultima documentary/development/retrospective combo videos are some of the most interesting videos I've ever seen. I never swipe these videos away, either saving them to a playlist or watching them at once!
I hope and pray Ultima and Ripper don't take more reviewers from us. I offer a sacrifice to the dark gods every time a new video drops. We can't go back to the dark ages of the 2000s.
I also recommend Warlockracy for similar vibes. He covers more obscure Eastern European CRPGs and how that genre evolved separately from weatern CRPGs like Baldur's Gate and Ultima.
Just wanna say you have the perfect blend of pacing and humor, two qualities that I find are key for long-form video essays that mainly focus on horror/thriller/mystery games, especially for the more convoluted stories. You, Noah Caldwell Gervais, and eurothug4000 are my main rotation that makes day-to-day work bearable. So thank you! The quality and speed of which you churn these videos out are amazing (be careful of burnout!)
Battle Construction Vehicle's art style is a great taste of classic 70's manga, from what I can find the character designer, Hiroshi Motomiya, is a prolific manga author in japan but has basically no presence in english-speaking circles. The biggest thing would probably be his involvement with the Strider game series
This was a fun change of pace! Always nice to find out I’ll have something to watch during my workday. I was surprised to see “A Long Vacation” in this video - I just got a copy on vinyl for my birthday this year! Perhaps I should check out those other records you listed. Great work as always!

I'm a huge fan of transport sims and city builders generally, and I genuinely think A-Train is the best transport sim series out there. Yes, the UI is a huge pain and the mechanics are unintuitive and poorly explained, but once you get over the initial difficulty spike there's a sense of place and purpose in those games that other transport sims can't even approach. Watching the last train depart along a long rural line and knowing exactly how long the commute is for everyone living in the little villages out there, seeing them grow little shops and cafés, even seeing it head back to the depot during daylight in summer but at night in winter, while all the big city trains keep running late into the night... It's a super unique experience. It's fascinating to see Artdink explore a lot of the same ideas in other genres. They make a lot of games where the world is something you can inhabit and interact with and explore, but it's not there entirely for you. Real cozy uplifting exploratory chillout-athons.
It's amazing seeing some love for Artdink. Lunatic Dawn, particularly Passage of the Book (which can be patched into English) really deserves its own video.
whenever I see PS1 and underwater I think of Divers Dream (dolphin dream in Japan) it's a Diving RPG on the PS1 which revolved around exploring a fake titanic for some crown jewels. It was somehow the calmest and most scariest game of my childhood and pushed me to try and become a underwater archaeologist
I saw Carnage Heart advertised in a magazine in the 90s and always wanted to try it, but years later when I DID have a PSX I couldn't remember the name of it and thus could never hunt it down. Until now, in this random video about a developer and games I had otherwise never even heard about. Good thing I didn't sleep through it.
Really cool to not only see these dream-like underwater exploration games, but just to get a feel for what the developer was making around the time of each game's release, very cool!
Damn this video combining a look at a game series and a quick retrospective about the game studio that created it is pretty unique. Love how both elements are interwoven along the runtime. It's sad it's quite difficult to put a catchy title that can fully describe a video like this. This deserves far more views and I bet a lot of people would be interested in a quirky Japanese game studio but will never click this thinking It's just a video game review based on the thumbnail alone 😢

These Aquanaut's Holiday games give me a specific vibe from watching them here. Anyone else remember that Demo Disc that came with the PS1's launch? Along with some game verticle slices, it had two 3D graphics demonstrations you could interact with to show off the console's power. One was a T-Rex running in a dark void, the other was a Manta Ray in an endless blue ocean. I farted around with the latter for hours. Strange to be reminded of so specific a vibe from such specific a time.

Nice Sunny Day Real Estate reference. That came out of the blue, but was much appreciated. What an influential band in my life. Interesting overview of Artdink too. I swear I know that name from somewhere. They must have just helped produce some game I played or something because I never heard of any of these before. Well I did hear of no one can stop Mr. Domino but I think it just sounded too silly to rent back then.
It's been really surreal seeing BCV come up a lot in niche videogame video essays and conversations so much more the last couple years as someone who actually had it on the ps2 as a kid and played it a bunch without understanding a bloody bit of it
Ps1 games just have that "X" factor for me. It feels like it's own pocket universe. It immediately pulls me back into my youth. Living out in the country, with my bedroom window open. Playing parasite eve, bushido blade, soul blade, final fantasy tactics ect...
As a '90s kid, I grew up with a fascination with the ocean since I got Undersea Adventure on MS-DOS. The game's "3-D Undersea World" (a Doom-style underwater museum level) actually made me want a larger game where you'd explore or just wander the ocean. If only I knew about the Aquanaut series. I can imagine little me spending a whole summer on the second, heh. I know there are similar modern games, but I'd love to see a modern Aquanaut.
Thanks for covering the Aquanauts Holiday series! Ive been interested in it for some time, ever since playing subnautica. The ocean has a deep sense of fear and discovery few games tap into. It's environmental story telling at its best. And I'm always look for more games that explore such.
Fantastic video, as always! Love that you explored the history of the publisher as well. It's always fun to realize just how many varied, unique games exist out there! I first learned of Aquanaut's Holiday 1 from an issue of GAME URARA I was pawing through. They had a small feature for the game and what I intuit to be a guide explaining the rarity of certain sea life you can come across. Did you know there's a UFO that you can find in the game? Apparently its wicked rare, tho!
Whoa BCV was not something I ever expected to see. I am not surprised as a Japanese game but it is still something I never knew should exist. Thank you for elevating my life.
This is my adult version of saturday morning cartoons. Thank you.

Great video, dungeon! Wild choice for this one.
Forget the algorithms advice, those of us who love your work will show up
I m sick currently, and it was really nice to listen to this video while dozing off in the bed 👍
That first A-Train opening theme literally had me bobbing my head and grinning, which is rare.
Awesome, just got back from the dispensary and am read to watch
Strap in!
Came for the copious wonders existing beneath the briny deep, stayed for the Sunny Day Real Estate reference
Thanks to this video, I looked up the Notam of Wind ost and found it on spotify. Thanks Dungeon chill!
Whoa BCV was not something I ever expected to see. I am not surprised as a Japanese game but it is still something I never knew should exist. Thank you for elevating my life.
I hope that one day you will be more popular. It shows how much effort you put into making those videos.
Love the videos dude, wishing you well!
what an insane game. and a lovely video on an insane game. thank you!
