Supposedly, this movie is the Coen Brothers take on a famous Raymond Chandler mystery novel, “The Big Sleep” which was made into a movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. It was legendary for being convoluted and almost impossible to follow, but very atmospheric. This is the Coen Brothers stoner version of the same story.
Many of Chandler's novels were. He was constantly at odds with his clients, the cops and criminals - getting arrested, beat up (by cops and criminals) kidnapped now and then, and drugged (against his will) also.
Agreed. With as many times as i've seen it there are just small parts where the acting stands out. Like pretty much every single scene with Seymour-Hoffman. Even things as little as Jeff Bridges when he's told her life is in your hands. Idk why but his acting in that scene is perfect to me.
There used to be an annual Big Lebowski party at a local theatre near me for a decade. They had standup comedians before and after the show and served white russians throughout. Such a fun event that I wish they kept going to this day as this is a fantastic movie to rewatch, especially with a crowd, and laugh all over again every time.
I have a framed poster on my wall from 2005. Says it the fourth annual Lebowski Fest in Louisville, Kentucky. I didn't go, a friend that went gave it to me. Live bands, bowling, drinks and what have you.. the poster says. It's the type of movie you know is a classic while you're watching it and yet it still gets better every time you see it. Deserves the following it's built
"Donnie" was in Fargo just before this movie, in which his character just would not shut up. That's why he was in this one, and why Walter kept telling him to shut up. It also explains why Donnie had to die. :)
The genius in this movie are all the countless little details that continue to pop up on subsequent viewings. Like the fact that Donnie's shirt and pants in the beginning are an exact color match of the seats in the bowling alley. He is such a wall flower that he literally blends in with the furniture. Another example is how the dog is running away in the background when Walter is taking the carrier back to the car when the police arrive. I don't think I spotted that until maybe my third viewing. The Coen brothers are the greatest living directors alive, IMO.
Fantastic movie. Even the smallest role is written so well, so many great and unique characters. About Donny: Never missed a strike. Except the last one. Something was off then already, he felt something in his arm after the missed shot. A sign of an upcoming heart attack.

Then again, I still can’t rule out that The Dude is such a scatterbrain that he just doesn’t consider using the (hypothetical) door lock. I mean, it might not be just such a simple… you know?
It's unreal the same directors who made this made No Country for Old Men, such talent. I realize many don't consider comedies masterpieces. However, I consider this movie a masterpiece.
The Coens mostly do two kinds of films - noirish crime films and zany comedies. Big Lebowski is unique in that it is a zany comedy that parodies the noir crime novels of Raymond Chandler (and the films based on them like The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye). The other film that stands out as not being in either category is A Serious Man - which is amusing but hardly zany.
This film was part of a 3-film trilogy by the Coen Brothers, focusing on different parts of the US. This was LA; Fargo was the upper Midwest; and Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou was the deep south. The actor who played Donnie, and the one who played the pornstar/nihilist are central figures in Fargo. The actor who played Donnie in this one had so many lines in Fargo that the Coen Brothers decided to fix that in this one with Donnie getting told to Shut The *F* Up all the time. The actor who played Walter has a central scene in Oh, Brother--also a hilarious movie.
@@arsmor1end1 You might be correct, but decades ago, I read an article in Rolling Stone that outlined the trilogy concept, and at the time it seemed pretty legit. I do agree that the Coens confirmed Oh, Brother was based on the Odyssey, which is easy to see in the film, based in the deep South.
All Cohen Brothers movies are cool. Different genres. One of my favorites is Burn After Reading. Not a very long movie but dark humor and has an incredible cast.

If I'm not mistaken, Donnie represents the child-like innocence of Walter. The child in all of us must die, so we can become adults. Then prepare for our ultimate demise. I think that's right ?🤔
This is so hilarious! It was actually written as an homage to Raymond Chandler and his convoluted cheap L.A. detective paperback crime melodramas from the '40s and '50s (Farewell My Lovely, The Long Goodbye, The Big Sleep...), featuring Private I. Phillip Marlowe, who was often caught between the cops, the criminals and even his own clients, as he suffered beatings, arrests, kidnappings and even drugged against his will now and then. And the 'Dude' abides.
11:50 Most folks don't pick up on the Dude listening to bowling. Unless they've bowled, many folks may not recognise the sound that a perfect strike makes. He's probably listening to a recording of a tourney that he'd played in as part of his preparation for the upcoming semi-finals. The Dude takes his bowling seriously 😎 26:40 It is Lupin from Harry Potter. 43:50 Donny unluckily rolls a 9, foreshadowing...

I will admit that I do not typically watch discussions after movie reactions. I tend to lose interest after a minute or two if that. I can't even tell you exactly what makes me tend to stick around for your guys discussions except that maybe it just feels so genuine and it doesn't go on for too long. I checked this one and saw it was roughly six minutes but it felt like just a few. So even though I can't really articulate it I wanted to share it with you that even someone like me who often skips these parts I find yours to be entertaining. And by the way that was David Thewlis (Professor Lupin). I was glad you caught that. When I first saw The Big Lebowski I didn't know who he was and it wasn't until I rewatched Lebowski some years after the Harry Potter series that I recognized him. I originally knew David Thewlis in Dragonheart (1996). Which is a nostalgic movie for me but one that I now as an adult look back on as a somewhat mediocre script but surprisingly has a stellar cast including the ironic pairing of Thewlis with Jason Isaacs! It was super surreal seeing Lupin and Lucius together in Dragonheart since I saw Dragonheart first and didn't make the connection of the actors until many years later. Anyways, I have rambled enough. I really enjoyed this reaction and so far have enjoyed all of your channel's reactions. Thank you guys sincerely for the entertainment.
What if the Terminator was played by and written for Steve Buscemi, or The Godfather was written with Danny DeVito in mind? During the making of the film Buscemi said to the directors this was the first film he had made where he lived to the end. They then rewrote the ending.

To each their own but Walt is the best character in the movie. The dude and Donnie are great but Walt is a man of principles, skewed as they might be. He was right about everything, the toe and the self kidnapping.
I’m still convinced that The Stranger (Sam Elliott) is some sort of heavenly being, perhaps one of the angelic hierarchy, who has been in observation of The Dude. I take comfort in knowing that The Dude has a sort of guardian angel. Of course he could be nothing more than the narrator. But then why call him The Stranger in the credits. Maybe a reference to Camus and his novel of the same name. An exploration of absurdism. One could certainly argue that the characters in this movie define absurdism, the seeking of a meaning in life and finding none, leading to the question of what do we do with this life. The only problem is the creator was from a country where he wouldn't have the last name Lebowski being from there and the bigger problem is the creator was still alive so there'd be no beneficiaries to his estate as he wasn't dead 😊LOL I believe the guys actually still alive now when was last January I think it was when I looked
I have not spent one second of my life consuming Harry Potter books or movies and I can’t help but feel that my life is much fuller because of it. But the dude abides.
The tv edit for this is hilarious. "Do you see what happens Larry when you face a stranger in the Alps!" BTW my wife and I just watched Tim Burtons Batman (1989) last night and Kylie looks a heck of a lot like Kim Basinger did in that film.
Walter - the type of friend who get's another friend all charged up over something fairly small and ready to do battle. Walter: "And then they come and pee on your fkn rug! AM I WRONG?! AM I WRONG?!" 🤣
Great reaction- you kind of alluded to it at the end and made me think: in a way, the entire build up during the movie stressing The Dude's nonchalant attitude was all just so that in the end, we actually believe he is someone who doesn't care enough to move out of the way when his friend's ashes are blowing all over him.
Uhhh I'm just gonna go find a cash machine. 😂 I am a big fan of this movie. I even own The Big Lebowski pinball machine made by Dutch Pinball. I rewatch this often. Always gets me laughing.
$1,000,000 in $20 dollar bills? A $20 bill weight = 1 gram, 454 grams to 1 pound 1,000,000 / 20 / 454 = 110 pounds. Of course that will fit into a little brief case? They must be using DUDE math. 🤔🤨💸💸💸💸💸

I love that Lebowski never bowls in the whole movie.
Being too chatty is not a very good reason for someone to become the recipient of a death sentence.
The closest it gets is when he assists Maude in bowling, but that was just in his drugged mind.

apparently the lore is that the dude gets by with no job bc his grandfather was the inventor of the rubix cube. so..he gets occasional residuals!!😉
"You're a wizard Dude!"
"Well that's like just you're opinion man."
Coen Bros "Raising Arizona" blows this away!!!
✌️🌎❤️
I have not spent one second of my life consuming Harry Potter books or movies and I can’t help but feel that my life is much fuller because of it. But the dude abides.
The tv edit for this is hilarious. "Do you see what happens Larry when you face a stranger in the Alps!" BTW my wife and I just watched Tim Burtons Batman (1989) last night and Kylie looks a heck of a lot like Kim Basinger did in that film.
The Nihilists are a goof on the band "Kraftwerk", even down to the boombox music😂
He looks like Professor Lupin because that is Professor Lupin. lol
dude dude dude looking out my back door.
Walter - the type of friend who get's another friend all charged up over something fairly small and ready to do battle.
Walter: "And then they come and pee on your fkn rug! AM I WRONG?! AM I WRONG?!" 🤣
They were telling Donnie to shut up because of how much Steve Buscemi's character in Fargo talked.
Best youtubers in the world🐐
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?
That is in fact Lupin (David Thewlis)
Also Ares.
« shut up Danny ! »
You're out of your element Donny!
A $20 bill weight = 1 gram, 454 grams to 1 pound
1,000,000 / 20 / 454 = 110 pounds. Of course that will fit into a little brief case?
They must be using DUDE math. 🤔🤨💸💸💸💸💸
Need to watch the rest of the Coens Brothers films. So great.
First time I saw the ashes scene - in theatres - I laughed so hartd I lost the ability to breathe.
Steve Bashemi Jeff Bridges and John Goodman have all said that they never watch any of the movies they are in when they are on TV or whatever... except for this one. They will actually sit and watch this one because they actually do enjoy it as fans of the movie as well
