Walter's character was inspired by Hollywood director & screenwriter John Milius, or at least on the public image Milius cultivated over his years in Hollywood. If you put a picture of Goodman as Walter next to a period shot of Milius, the resemblance is uncanny.
@@Harv72b The funny thing is John Milius was a Marine reject that was disqualified for having asthma, so there's a theory that Walter himself never went to 'Nam.

I heard the Walter character (John Goodman) was loosely based on the writer/director John Milius, who supposedly carried a pistol and used to freak out the movie people with his antics. He was a real character. I've seen his daughter on Twitter talk about watching this movie and recognizing her father in a lot of what Goodman. What a great role. Glad you loved it! It’s one of the few films that gets better with every viewing because the real star is the script: the wordplay, for example the fact that certain phrases repeat in different contexts (“this aggression will not stand, man!”), is genius throughout. Bridges has said that he almost never rewatches his own films but if he catches this one before it gets to Turturro’s first Jesus scene, he has to watch at least long enough to see that brilliant cameo.

There's a bar in Glasgow called Lebowski's where they serve a dozen or so different varieties of White Russian in the Dude's honour. Highly recommended if u ever get the chance.
I had a friend that would watch this movie every single birthday as tradition and as time went on, i could see why she did. It’s phenomenal and original!!
Speaking of writers, the actors followed the script to the last 'uh" and f-word. That bit where Bridges is fumfering around in the Big Lebowski's limousine? "What am I blathering about?" etc? Word for word. I was shocked that there were virtually no ad-libs in a movie that seems to consist only of ad-libs. The Coens were incredible screenwriters. They need to get back together, dang it. Anyway, GREAT review!
One of the most obvious observations people make is the repetition of language, and essentially The Dude being an empty vessel regurgitating phrases he's only just recently heard. How does that seem ad-libbed? Having a tight script is absolutely necessary to the film.
i love when writers and directors are crazy about dialogue.. i know aaron sorkin is that way.. its hard as hell to be word perfect as an actor... but when its scripts like this you must respect it! because its meant to told a certain way!
@@holddownaon the West Wing Weekly podcast they mentioned an incident where the word "the" was typed twice in the script, and most believed it was just a typo, but it being a Sorkin script, they eventually decided to call Sorkin to be absolutely sure. It turned out to be a typo.
Oh man, I am very excited for this! It's difficult to explain how much i love this movie. The sheer amount of joy and laughter this movie gave me and my friends from the endlessly quotable lines is something for which i will forever be grateful. I still remember the first time i saw it I was 17 and i think i started watching it at like 2am. I watched the whole thing, understood nothing, was probably bored, and i don't know if i laughed at all. Then maybe 5 years later i watched it stoned with friends and fell in love. I watched it countless times since and have loved it every time.
This movie warrants a rewatch. So many things you notice each viewing. It's better with a crowd, a White Russian, maybe a bit of weed. The Coen Bros. are a treasure. Check out some more of their work.
I haven't seen this movie before, so to watch you deconstruct it as you did was delightful. If you haven't seen it another movie that is a must if you haven't seen it is Planes, Trains and Automobiles. It is a film that John Hughes wrote and directed about two men traveling at Thanksgiving. This is a movie where conflicting personalities lead to humor, chaos and drama. I think you would love it!!!
A couple of fun facts; Jeff Bridges claimed The Dude was pretty much who he'd been in the 1970s. He asked the Coen brothers after reading the script "Did you guys hang out with me in high school?" An inspiration for the character of Walter is the Coen Brothers' friend, writer and director John Milius, with his obsession with all things militaristic, and an enthusiasm for guns, claims to be obsessed with the Vietnam War and also has very similar look to Walter himself. One of the nihilists was played by the bassist from Red Hot Chili Peppers. There are a number of fan theories also, one is about The Dude being The big Lebowski's Son. After the older Lebowski fathered an illegitimate son with his housemaid, she threatened to reveal their relationship to his wife. He pays her to keep quiet, and The Dude's mom uses this payment to create a trust fund for her son wich would explain why the Dude can do everything he does all day without having a real job.. Another theory is about Donny being a figment of Walter's imagination. "Walter is struggling with PTSD after his service in the Vietnam War, and Donny was perhaps a friend that he lost who Walter is now able to see and interact with. This theory is supported by the fact that, save for a few subtle occasions, Walter is the only one that interacts with Donny." One theory suggests Walter is hallucinating all of his friends' presence. "His delusions are aided by the people who work and bowl at the alley." The friends representing his fractured self; The Dude being a "laid back, easy-going old Stoner". "Donny represents Walters childhood naiveté. He is constantly out of his element, always confused, easily frightened and anxiety ridden."
The greatest tidbit I knew of was that the Dude was supposedly the heir to the Rubik's cube fortune, which explains how he has an apartment while clearly lacking a job. Coens left it out of the movie but that would've been amazing
One of my favorite little moments from this movie, that mostly goes unacknowledged, is that the sheriff of Malibu is a stereotype of a small-town rural sheriff...
The Dude Abides. You gotta love that. First time I saw this, there was no question this was going to be a classic. Loved seeing your reaction. Was pretty sure you'd love it.
Comedy recommendation: Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), starring Hugh Grant in the role that basically launched his career as the somewhat bumbling and fidgeting romantic lead in several movies throughout the 90s, and Andie MacDowell, together with many recognizeable British actors.
My favorite thing everybody misses is that the actor with a shaved head that's giggling with Maude also played Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter movies. And nobody ever recognizes him in this. Sadly, that gorgeous bowling alley was destroyed by fire shortly after filming. And John Goodman showed up at the unveiling of Jeff's Walk Of Fame star as Walter. AWESOME.
'Good night sweet prince' is a line from Shakespeare's Hamlet. The full quote is "Good night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest”. So Walter must be fairly educated.
Both movies are amazing. Kingpin is hilarious. The Big Lebowski is a classic. In 2005-2006 I met Peter Storemare when I worked security for Prison Break tv show. He had a role in this film. He is one of the kindest and funniest people I ever met. When I was at Joliet Prison in Joliet Illinois. His car rolled up, he rolls down his window and has his hand out hi I’m Peter. I shook his hand. I still have his paper he handed to me for a bar party he threw in Chicago. I went to the party. His mom was at the party as well and got to meet her. She was so kind.
The Toilet Rinse makes his hair so luxurious, LOL. The Coen Bros made this as sort of a tribute to that old Los Angeles detective novelist Raymond Chandler (The Big Sleep, The Long Goodbye, Farewell My Lovely, etc.) by basing the plot on his style, just in a modern setting, with Jeff Lebowski in the role of Phillip Marlowe.
That final scene is quite amazing. One long take from Dude ordering his drinks, talking to the barman, then talking to the Stranger, then the Stranger's 4th wall break, to then pan up to a guy bowling a strike. If that guy missed that strike theyd have had to do it again!
@@blackwolf4653 Abide means to accept a rule, or like obey a command. So in response to the Stranger telling him to take it easy, "The Dude abides," is just confirming that he will indeed take it easy.

Knew you'd love this movie lmao, totally your vibe
Totallllly my vibe haha
Great movie, my favorite of all time.
the film timeless in all areas 🥰
fav film, cheers for the reaction
🍻
There's a bar in Glasgow called Lebowski's where they serve a dozen or so different varieties of White Russian in the Dude's honour. Highly recommended if u ever get the chance.
I had a friend that would watch this movie every single birthday as tradition and as time went on, i could see why she did. It’s phenomenal and original!!
Never seen John Goodman play a better part! Chemistry among the cast incredible! 🤠
Yes! One of my absolute favorites! 😊
Now Mine too!
This movie is why great writers are so important.
This movie was so brilliantly written one of my favorite movies
A couple of fun facts; Jeff Bridges claimed The Dude was pretty much who he'd been in the 1970s. He asked the Coen brothers after reading the script "Did you guys hang out with me in high school?"
An inspiration for the character of Walter is the Coen Brothers' friend, writer and director John Milius, with his obsession with all things militaristic, and an enthusiasm for guns, claims to be obsessed with the Vietnam War and also has very similar look to Walter himself.
This theory is supported by the fact that, save for a few subtle occasions, Walter is the only one that interacts with Donny."
One theory suggests Walter is hallucinating all of his friends' presence.
The Dude Abides.
That rug really tied the room together.
All The Dude wanted was his rug back. Im not greedy. It really....tied the room together.
HOLY SHIT.... you said HAM BONE!!!! I am absolutely shocked and impressed.
Hehehehehehe!!!
Every single line is quotable!!
2:26 that toilet was immaculate. 😎
On that toilet seat, the bums will always win!
My favorite movie of all time…
Comedy recommendation: Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), starring Hugh Grant in the role that basically launched his career as the somewhat bumbling and fidgeting romantic lead in several movies throughout the 90s, and Andie MacDowell, together with many recognizeable British actors.
Never seen! Been on my list forever!
@@holddowna Awesome. I wouldn't wanna jinx it, but I dare say you will absolutely love it!
The joke behind Walter always telling Donnie to shut the fuck up comes from Fargo where Steve Buscemi kept trying to get Peter Stormare to talk.
AWESOME.
I totally missed it!
He also plays the Knight Hospitaller in Kingdom of Heaven. My favorite role of his
He is also the shady businessman with the terrible teeth in Fargo Season 3.
Ahh! Cool story! Thanks for sharing!
@@holddowna you’re welcome for sharing
Bet he seldom misses.
What does the dude abides mean.? In german translation it say‘s somethig like. The dude can handle it.
@@blackwolf4653 Abide means to accept a rule, or like obey a command. So in response to the Stranger telling him to take it easy, "The Dude abides," is just confirming that he will indeed take it easy.
This is such a chaotic script it was interesting you were able to hypothesize what happened or was going to happen
The Dude, the myth himself :D
Talk about casting, that was Flea playing one of the nihilists and musician Amiee Mann playing the girlfriend who gave up her toe!
Brandt's nervous laughter to Bunny's offer is one of my favourite moments.
Seconded on needing more original movies like this.
