민주주의의 의의 naturally pronounced would be 민주주이에 의이! I think. And it means democracy's significance, right? I was somewhat already aware of this concept but this video helped me to consolidate it. Thanks, as always, Billy!
Great timing for your video. I am working with a Korean tutor and she told me to pronounce the apostrophe as 에 sound and I was confused why. Thank you for your videos!
Very useful video thanks. I read a lot of books and I hate this combination. I was getting it mostly right. Keyword on mostly. I’ve been mispronouncing 편의점. And the thing is, I knew I was screwing it up 😂.
발음이 크게 문제 되지는 않아요. 편의점, 편이점 어떻게 발음해도 다 알아들어요. 의가 이로 발음될 때도 확실한 '이' 보다는 '의'와 '이' 사이 발음인 경우가 많아요. 이제 막 영어 공부를 시작해서 위 내용의 의미를 제대로 이해한 것인지 모르겠네요. 우연히 이 채널을 보게 되었는데 잘 알려주시네요.
Halfway through this video I realized you were writing on thin air and got distracted thinking about how that's done... No this is seriously very helpful, I've been taunted by this syllable for years. But the sight of that cleaning cloth very definitely squishing against something solid haunts me. There's something there...
He’s writing on a clear board, which would appear backwards to us. But the video is flipped in editing so that we can see it the correct way. You can see the words on his hat are backwards
Yes, 저/나 are separate words, and 은/는 and 이/가 are used in different ways. Your question is actually 4 questions :) But I have a full course that covers all of those that's here: ua-cam.com/video/sx0yyQqkpqo/v-deo.html You can skip ahead past the writing lessons and beyond that I teach the Topic Marker and Subject Marker, and then Politeness Levels.
I am new to this really wonderful and very useful channel..... I feel really happy when I watch your videos, as you are smart and have a great sense of humor. 선생님 감사합니다💜
i live in daegu at the moment and was walking around the market with my coworker and pointed out the clothes section to go in there, which started with 의. i said it as 이 because 1. i find it easier to say and 2. if its gyeongsang dialect like you said, perhaps i have just heard it pronounced 이. anyway, she corrected me on the pronunciation and got me to say it properly... i knew what it was supposed to be in 표준어, so was expecting her to say 의... but she said closer to 어이 because of her accent... i worked out about older people in daegu pronouncing 어 as 으 (e.g. 읎어 not 없어) but didnt realise it existed the other way round!!! so i guess in very specific senses you can add 어이 haha
What dictionary do you use that provides the pronunciatons you mention in the video? The main dictionary I use, Papago, provides a pronunciation in Latin letters (ui for 의), but I do not find that useful (also, the voice recordings are dreadful). What I'd like to see, ideally, is how the Korean word is pronounced using the Korean alphabet AND the Latin alphabet. A good recording would be a godsend, but perhaps that's simply impossible for computers to do.
Excuse me, but I believe this channel already did this storyline. "Learn Korean Ep. 43: Possessive Marker 의". Also "Billy Go's Beginner Korean Course | #34: The Particle 의."
My mother is from Seoul and she always pronounces 의사 as 으사.
I always heard it this way too. My parents are from Jeolla region.
I was raised to say it as 으사. My parents are both from jeollabukdo

After 5 years of studying Korean I still struggle with the pronunciation of 의🥲
So do I it’s so challenging
I was just learning this and my book was not clear, but thanks to your explanation I understand now! 정말 고마워요!

거는 학생이에요. 의 pronounciation has confused me for the longest time when it came to it being the possessive marker. This clears it up so much. 감사합니다!
I hadn't come across the 이 variation yet 👍🏻

But no more, thanks to you!!
Thank you so much for this video! I always struggle with pronouncing 의
Billy, this helped me a lot since I'm currently at the part where u explain some of this at the mere beginning of our lessons, lucky me I guess 🍓
This 의 still confuses me especially the part when pronouncing it as 에/이 in some of the words
Great and useful video!!❤. And I love your writing board method. You literally know this language backwards!! 😮😂
민주 주이에 의이? 🥲🥲 btw Billy, do you have a video or live stream about the differences between using 저는/나는 and 내가?

A truly very useful lesson! 감사합니다 빌리 ... and Google translate is pretty accurate with all of those. I think 의외의 is my new favourite word 😆

Lol thanks, I've been wondering how to pronounce this for a long time

I think I hear more Koreans pronounce 의사 as 우사 and 의정부 as 우정부, but you didn't discuss the 우 pronunciation.
That would be just a regional pronunciation.

i never had a problem with pronouncing 의 bc that's how we say eww in my mother tongue lol
