    i’m mexican and i also find ways to connect my native tongue to korean. for example
    빨대 (ppaldae) -> popote (straw)
    숟가락 (sudgalag) -> cuchara (spoon)
    빵 (bbang) -> pan (bread)
    i love learning this way because it helps me memorize and think in my native tongue and that way my vocabulary expands in both languages

    These are awesome tips! I started learning Korean about 3 weeks ago and it's quite fascinating that two people can come up with similar learning strategies, while watching this video it felt like so similar to my thought process when I learn new languages. And one more tip I think is important is to actually write the language using a pen and paper vs just on phone keyboard too

    a few tips from me:
    1) Listen to as much Korean speech as possible, you can just put a podcast in the background and not think about the translation. This method helps me to get used to Korean speech and all the words are more familiar to me.
    2) I saw on one channel a method with cards - you take a piece of paper and fold it in half. on the inside you write the word and on the outside you write the translation. when you repeat the words, you read the word - translate - close the sheet and on the place of the word you see the translation. such a card can hold a lot of words.
    3) Writing down words about 3 lines every time I write out a new word and thinking vigorously about the translation. it helps a lot when writing, because the muscle memory remembers how to write a particular word.
    4) my English teacher showed this method. a sheet of paper is folded 4 times. twice you copy the word and then close them. the third time you have to write the word from your head fold and repeat 4 times.

    Thank you for making this video! It was very helpful. I have been self-studying Korean for a little over a year now, and while I'm at the level where I can understand the main concepts of grammar, I'm stuck on just building up my vocabulary. I will definitely check out notion and try the tips you gave!
    Also, one tip that was helpful for me was just to speak! Any words you knew, throughout your day. Similar to what you said, like if you go to pick up an apple, you say aloud, "사과" and just little things like that. When you think about how little children learn their first language, they learn just by listening and most importantly, just speaking, even if it might not be correct. The important part is trying, and just doing. And little children learn how to speak their first language in a relatively short time, compared with when you try to learn a second language! That's what I've been trying to do now, practicing my speaking even just to myself.

    that tip where you relate it to the object instead of the word is huge. i find myself when translating to think of the word in english which then translates to my brain to understand it first... which takes a lot of brain power i feel. or memory whichever.

    I always do the visualization thing. I always imagine images instead of English words. I also do imaginary experiences like imagining scenarios then I'm going to create possible conversations, create simple to complicated sentences as much as possible then play them in my mind. but sometimes I do self-talk in the mirror it's kind of crazy but useful.

    The language connection one really helps - my first language is Cantonese (which is one of the oldest modern Chinese languages I think) and it has so many connections with Korean. I honestly thought learning the Sino-Chinese numbers was gonna be a pain, but I swam through it so easily because the numbers were so similar. So is the world color (saek) and it sounds like Cantonese's "sik".
    I only understand Cantonese (it may be my first but it's not my native language) so it was a bit of mental gymnastics to recall the words, but it helped so much.

    Instead make connection I prefer use *Hanjas / etymology of the words* , it's make more sense end it's easiest to me.
    60-70% of the words are sino-korean words, there are originaly written in chinese sinogramme (before have their own written, korea, china, vietnam and japanse use classical chinese, in majority these come from chinese and japanese) and now there are the retranscription in hangeul, but they meaning follows the logical construction of meaning of chinese words, that make them so easely to learn :
    *인 come from to 人 that mean "person" :*
    개인 -> piece + person = individual
    인물 -> person + object = Person
    인사 -> person + work = Greeting
    노인 -> old + person = elderly
    인간 -> person + between = Human
    인구 -> person + mouth = population
    외국인 -> outside + country + person = foreigner
    주인 -> host + person = owner
    ...

    Taking TOPIK tests a few times a year ensures that I'm not able to get too lazy when it comes to studying. The 'everyday' thing kills me a bit, as I have different interests I want to commit my time to. But, having a deadline (that I have already paid for!) helps to keep my skills from diminishing too much. The test can be a little intimidating, but, set your own goals and don't stress about getting perfect scores!

    Thank you! What I'm getting the most out of your video is immersion. I hadn't thought of just looking up a youtube video of whatever category I'm learning. Sometimes I get lucky and a NewJeans video has some of the vocab I'm learning. Like 빵 is bread, and I remember it because Hanni (NewJeans) likes it. You could probably just use the bottom character as the shape of a piece of bread and stuff the ㅂㅂㅏinside it.
    I'm Chinese (Cantonese) and since there's a good portion of Sino Korean words, it's easy to just vocalize it and make the connection easier.
    I think some vocab like counting numbers is hard to make connection to something I already know, so some things will have to be pure memory, which is fine. Some SAT words or more complicated words may have latin roots or prefixes, but many will only make sense if you memorize or use it when you have the chance.

    this helped me so much, i have a Korean student living with me and my family and they don't understand English that well and end up using a translator, which isn't a bad thing, but I want to make them feel comfortable, so I'm trying to learn Korean so I can communicate with them :)

    the part that i find the most difficult when self studying is that I dont know whether something is false information.
    I use several apps and websites to learn korean, but I often come across inconsistencies. for example on one of the websites orange = 오렌지 but on the app it´s 주황색 . in that case it´s obvious to just learn the proper word and not 오렌지 , but that´s not always the case. once they translated book with 권 even tho that´s only the counting word for book.
    one thing that helped me alot is looking up the syllables when learning a new word.
    for exaple 양말 was way easier to remember after looking up what 양 and 말 mean .
    at first i thought it´s strange that words consist of other words, because in german that´s not really the case, but then it helped me with memorizing. (it´s still a bit strange, tho... having sheeps and horses on my foot xd)

    I use them irl. I tell my friends I’m gonna be practicing a couple of vocal words and they agree. I keep a little notebook with me to refer back to incase. If I wanna say yes I’ll say “eung, yes” so they know what I’m saying. If I’m passing a note I’ll do “응 eung, yes”
