I think I have a big advantage in learning Korean as a native Romanian speaker, because we actually have the sound 으, written as "î" or "â", also, the sound 시, written as "și"
it's really interesting that native english speakers seem to have a very hard time pronouncing anything comparable to umlauts. as a german i first didn't understand where the problem is until i met my american husband.
The problem that I am now experiencing is that I can sort of read Hangul, but I don't know what I am reading. I know the pronunciation, I think, but I don't know what I am reading. Quite the conundrum.
You are able to explain pronounciation as if you were once a foreigner learning korean, you know exactly what is hard for us and how to make it simple. Most korean-teaching channels assume that every country in the world have similar sounds, but that's not your case. Great job!
I will add one more pronunciation variation of the vowel /ㅢ/ in Korean. When /ㅢ/ occurs at the beginning of a word, that is, with no consonant, as in 의사, 의자, 의논, the standard pronunciation is [의] as a diphthong, as the narrator explains. But in colloquial speech, many people pronounce it as [ㅡ]; so [으사], [으자], and [으논], respectively.
Correct me if I'm wrong but ㅓis sound like O like from the word 'oral' but also ui(or wui I'm not sure about this). Please someone answer this. How should I differentiate between O and wui(or ui)
To my ears, "너의" and "나의" actually usually sound like "너예" and "나예"! I think you even did that here. Still, your explanations are by far the best I've come across. I've been learning for a while now, and my dad is trying to grasp the basics. I think these will be very helpful for him. Thank you so much! 존경합니다! (혹시 외국 갔다 온 교포이신가요??)
It's so late but actually you are hearing it like that because saying ㅣ(ee) before other vowels (very fast) give it a "Y" sound at the start. Like if you try to say '이' and '아' really quick, it would sound like '야'.
@@luciettapark8374 but the 에 sound in 의 hasn't any 이 sound it's just 에, but the 예 is combination of 이 and 에 sound, since 의 is referred as 에 when it's used as a possessive particle then where does the 이 sound comes from to make it an 에 sound?
I started learning korean a week ago and today I've been binge watching your videos about pronunciation, they had been super helpful to finally understand how korean pronunciation works!
I really appreciate this pronunciation lessons. My first language is Spanish and even though we have the “ng” sound, like in mang-o it is really difficult for me to pronounce correctly ㅇ batchim followed by a vocal sound without carrying on the “g” sound like in 영어 , any tips or tricks? Thank you so much!
But why is 의(에) as a possessive particle sounds like (예) after a vowel? Like 나의 sounds 나예 or 너의 as 너예? We just transform it from 아 to 에 or 어 to 에, it seems there's an 이 sound include like 나이에(나예) and 나이에(나예) why is it like that?
Litrally I'm gald i found this video......Litrally no one...teaches so thoroughly that you are....even sometimes i got confused....that why are they saying ....의 as 이 and sometimes got mad....when listen 의 as ㅔ..... 감사합니다 for this video.....😊
Thank you!!!! Omg i was so confused with 의 so much and this really explains it so well!! It always confused me why 사랑의 불시착 was pronounced like 사랑에. Thank you for making this video!!
After learning about how hangul is such a beautiful scientific linguistic phonetic writing system it is disappointing to see inconsistencies in orthography. English spelling is awful I get that. I just expected better of Korean orthography because its such a cool system.. Maybe a new spelling reform is needed in korean as well. Would it cause confusion to start writing 의 possessive particle as 에 for example.
I like you. I typically use a different youtuber for korean, becayse she is very easy with it and explains things in 10 seconds that take other youtuber 10 minutes. However she does not dose on prununciation very much. So thank you for making videos like this. It was very helpful.
!! Duolingo is so useless in that regard, also depending on the ai voice they're using the pronunciation is different, how are you supposed to learn in those conditions

Hi 샘! Thank you for your explanation. It's very helpful! However I want to ask about 의 pronounciation as possessive particle further, in example that I saw: 1. 저의 is pronounced as 저에 (like you said But for: 2. 나의 is pronounced as 나의 3. 여자의 is pronounced as 여자의 Why it's like this? Why it's not pronounce as 나에 or 여자에 as well? That's my question 😊
Wow...by far the best explanation on youtube, Thank you so much. I was always confused why my learning app varies with the pronunciation of this. Thank you so much! Im gonna subscribe right away! :)
Omg thank you so much for this video! It helped clear my confusion... Someone was giving away old classic fairy tale books in Korean, and I want to learn Korean, so I thought it would be perfect since I knew most of the stories already and it would help me understand better. I came across two words: 마리의 and 호랑이의. I thought we had to pronounce them 마리의 and 호랑이의, but Google translate pronounced them 마리에 and 호랑이에. I got so confused to why 의 would be pronounce 에, but now, thanks to your video, I know why and when to pronounce it 의, 이, or 에! Tysm!!
Thank you! I was so confused as to why Lingo Deer was pronouncing it like 에, but it is because it is being used as a possessive particle. I was so confused and thought I didn't understand the sound.
I think it applies to names, but the surname doesn't count as a first syllable. When I think about how I would pronounce 김의영, I would pronounce the 의 as 의 and not 이. But if it was a 희, for example, I would pronounce it 히영.
Could you, please, tell if 의 is a descending diphthong (this is at least how I hear you pronounce it). I ask it since my teacher (who is from Seoul) used to pronounced as an ascending diphthong, meaning with more emphasis on 이 rather than on 으. Thank you in advance🙂
Hi! I’m not a linguist so I can’t say I’m an authority on the subject, but a quick google search says there’s a bit of controversy on whether 의 should be classified as ascending or descending! So there are arguments for both 😂 However I also found a Q&A on the website of the National Institute of Korean Language and they say it’s generally classified as descending. 🤷🏻♀️
I took a phonetics course in university and I love how you explain how sounds are articulated. Hoping maybe you'll be able to help explain the differences between 에 and 애 in the future. I find that when I hear these vowels in a word I'm wondering which one it is. Thank you so much!
Pronunciation-wise they're pretty much the same (although supposedly 애 is said with the mouth a bit wider... Koreans can't tell the difference either hehe)... you need to rely more on context. Once you learn more vocabulary it will get easier!! Thanks for your comment!
Have you done a video explaining the difference between 오 and 우? Both have pursed lips. I know one is o like “go” and one is oo like “pool,” but it doesn’t help, as when I hear Korean speakers, it’s sometimes hard to distinguish.
So for 으 the best way to get the pronunciation correct in my opinion (keep in mind that I am not a native speaker nor am I fluent in Korean) is to think of the sound you make when you’re disgusted with something it’s not perfect but it’ll help you get closer to the pronounciation
Just curious- what is your native language? Because obviously your Korean is fantastic, but your English sounds 100% like a native!! Either way, your skills are so impressive and your videos are so helpful. 감사합니다!!
Such a helpful video! I've been struggling to figure out why certain words seem not be pronounced as written, so having the rules explained helps so much!
How's it possible that every single video you've uploaded so far has been both interesting AND incredibly helpful??!
One more note. If the word finnish in 에 + possesive 의, in this case it will be pronounced “ui” even being a particle
this is genuis! thank you so much. That sound made me struggle a lot
So,so,so,so helpful!

Do you not know about the Romanizations ui and yi?
What if it's a person who's name ends with the "ee" sound? Would you still "ee" at the end or would it sound like "ae"?
If it’s ㅢ it can sound like ee. 영희 can sound like Young Hee.

Fantastic!
