Hypnotic is exactly it. I first stumbled across this 2 years ago while struggling to come to terms w/divorcing my alcoholic husband. I was sitting alone one night, working at my spinning wheel, when this song came on. I stopped what I was doing and sat still, spellbound, crying, thinking this must be what addiction is like from the inside. Powerful, powerful song.
Absolutely. I bought this album when it was first released, while going through a divorce myself. I thought the same way about addiction; whether by substance, or lust or power. It stays on tight like a glove.
This is some heavy music. Hard psychedelic rock with just a little bit of country twang. Emmylou's straight country stuff is great, but this Wrecking Ball / Spyboy material is even better.

the more I discover about songwriters and musicians, the more I find that I've so much more to hear and experience. this song is by David Olney who just died, I feel like I should've heard him somewhere along the way but didn't. what a great songwriter. sorta feel like I been ripped off, wish I'd known, wish I'd heard. RIP brother say hey to those who've gone on ahead, you've left some great music, more to discover (hell of a word.... dis-cover). RPG. 🚯☢
Astounding. Great version of this. I love this band and the Wrecking Ball CD. A version I keep hoping to find on UA-cam is the version from Sessions at West 54th. That was a great version, too.
Just listened to four different versions: three bij ELH and one by Wailin'Jennys. I prefer the one we're now listening to. It is the combination of voice and band. Excellent!
Maybe, but the Wailin' Jenny's version is closer to gospel, cleaner arrangement. That bodrun work is exceptional. Too many of the WJs are awful cell-phone versions, video and audio.
Well, ha ha Mm-hm Sun burned hot, it burned my eyes Burned so hot I thought I'd died Thought I'd died and gone to hell Lookin' for the water from a deeper well Went to the river but the river was dry Fell to my knees and I looked to the sky Looked to the sky and the spring rain fell I saw the water from a deeper well Well, well, well, well Lookin' for the water from a deeper well I was ready for love, I was ready for the money I was ready for the blood and ready for the honey Ready for the winnin', and ready for the bell Lookin' for the water from a deeper well Found some love and I found some money And I found that blood would drip from the honey Found I had a thirst that I could not quell Lookin' for the water from a deeper well Well, well, well, well Lookin' for the water from a deeper well So, I took to the road and I took to the song But I took it too fast and I took it too long They wanted my heart and they wanted my soul Could not keep what I could not hold So I ran with the moon and I ran with the night And the three of us were a terrible sight Nipple to the bottle to the gun to the cell To the bottom of a hole of a deeper well Well, well, well, well Lookin' for the water from a deeper well Well, I did it for kicks and I did it for hate And I did it for lust and I did it for faith Did it for need and I did it for love Addiction stayed on tight like a glove Hey there, mama, did you carry that load Did you tell your baby 'bout the bend in the road 'Bout the rebel yell 'bout the one that fell Lookin' for the water from a deeper well Well, well, well, well Lookin' for the water from a deeper well Well, well, well, well I drank the water from a deeper well Songwriters: Emmylou Harris / Daniel Roland Lanois / David Charles Olney

@@analogcabinmusic5070 That would be correct. Buddy playing his Wandre Guitar. Nothing like it anywhere. Either Blade boys are great. Brady killing this! (:
I've listened to this tune a thousand times. To see and hear her perform it LIVE was THRILLING! 🥰

One of my favourite Emmylou albums produced by the brilliant Daniel Lanois. The layered, ethereal sounds are hypnotic
YES. Fantastic album.
I’ve recently discovered Daniel Lanois.. Never realized his involvement on this recording
One of my favorite songs by Emmy Lou. Love seeing it live!
Thats a killer performance... Emmy Lou looks more beautiful then ever here.
Great cover of one of David Olney's many great songs.

This band is incredible.
That bass line is so funky
Emmy Lou Harris looks really good.
Holy shit... I'm shaking! That was absolutely incredible.

Emmylou also covered Olney's "Jerusalem Tomorrow" and "1917"
great lyrics
wow this is exceptional good Emmylou what a talent almost cowboy junkie Robbie R....
Greetings from IRELAND 😉 salamat for this gem

The Neville Bro' s with Buddy Miller made this an awesome show live!
Her drummer is incredible @ Reminds me of Led Zeppelin's Bonham...Of course, Emmylou is amazing, as always.
Hypnotic!
A powerful song.
Eu aqui no BRASIL 20/01/2020 escutando esta musica linda!!!!!

Dirt Wire does a version
It is faithful to the dirty dark beauty of this performance.
Don’t miss a live Dirt Wire show .
Wow! That was damn good........
There is something about those tom-toms the way Emmylou gives this song a Native sound.
Me too, but I think giving it a Native twist turns the song in another direction and I love those tom-toms.
Damn, Buddy....!
Rip David Olney
Well, ha ha
Mm-hm
Sun burned hot, it burned my eyes
Burned so hot I thought I'd died
Thought I'd died and gone to hell
Lookin' for the water from a deeper well
Went to the river but the river was dry
Fell to my knees and I looked to the sky
Looked to the sky and the spring rain fell
I saw the water from a deeper well
Well, well, well, well
Lookin' for the water from a deeper well
I was ready for love, I was ready for the money
I was ready for the blood and ready for the honey
Ready for the winnin', and ready for the bell
Lookin' for the water from a deeper well
Found some love and I found some money
And I found that blood would drip from the honey
Found I had a thirst that I could not quell
Lookin' for the water from a deeper well
Well, well, well, well
Lookin' for the water from a deeper well
So, I took to the road and I took to the song
But I took it too fast and I took it too long
They wanted my heart and they wanted my soul
Could not keep what I could not hold
So I ran with the moon and I ran with the night
And the three of us were a terrible sight
Nipple to the bottle to the gun to the cell
To the bottom of a hole of a deeper well
Well, well, well, well
Lookin' for the water from a deeper well
Well, I did it for kicks and I did it for hate
And I did it for lust and I did it for faith
Did it for need and I did it for love
Addiction stayed on tight like a glove
Hey there, mama, did you carry that load
Did you tell your baby 'bout the bend in the road
'Bout the rebel yell 'bout the one that fell
Lookin' for the water from a deeper well
Well, well, well, well
Lookin' for the water from a deeper well
Well, well, well, well
I drank the water from a deeper well

"Country" :D :D :D :D :D
If THIS were country, I'd volunteer to be a country musician.
Damn

This is the shit...
who is in this band here?
Looks like Daniel Lanois on guitar, Daryl Johnson on bass, Brian Blade on drums. Typical producer Lanois dreamteam.
Daryl Johnson bass, Buddy Miller guitar, Brady Blade Jr. Drums

My husband said it is her band Spy Boy
A legend. Very good version. But I prefer (sorry Emmylou) the Wailin' Jenneys version.
