277.30 km Chennai - Salem Expressway project is a proposed 6-lane access-controlled road with a route alignment through Tambaram & Harur within Tamil Nadu.
This greenfield project under Bharatmala Pariyojana (BMP) program was originally envisioned to be 8-laned with an estimated cost of Rs. 10,000 crore, but has since been revised down to 6 lanes.
As of February 2022, the Chennai Salem corridor is in pre-construction stage with studies being undertaken like Social Impact Assessment (SIA) to analyse and create proper alternatives as per guidelines of the Supreme Court of India. Land acquisition is currently underway and NHAI is currently seeking environmental clearance and approvals from Forest Department.

I m in pappireddipatti dharmapuri dist. 8 lane road will pass near to my place. Politically motivated protest for this road. No good infra in these area. Means this proposed areas are all backward districts. They will be benefited this project. Unlike Western ghats there is no where dense forest in the route. Road will be laid in the slopes. Pls don't simply say this project will destroy hills and mineral wealth. Baseless info. In my district dharmapuri, many people are supporting this project. Only in the media showing there is no support. Admk won both harur and pappireddipatti even when there is peak protest for this project. I mentioned this bcaz some people voted admk only for this project. Unfortunately DMK played worst politics that time.
