Single fret power chords, so it is clearly drop-something tuning.
When I learned this song I was baffled by both - strange chords used and strange sounds they produced. I switched to standard power chords and it sounded much better. It was quite a long time later when I learned about drop-D (this is drop-C but the idea is basically the same just a tone down) and its peculiarities. Immediately first thing that came into mind was Aerials, and suddenly everything started to make sense. After that I was still playing it wrong (drop D), but at least it sounded MUCH better than before :)

If you tune down to Drop C you should get the same sound. SOAD plays like almost all their music in Drop C as far as I know.

At the start is clean and before tabs 8 is distorsion (lead)
