This has been tallica's problem for the last twenty years. Some interesting riffs and ideas but everything outstays it's welcome. Particularly as their whole style has drifted towards a punkier style. If you're not going to write in an epic style, don't make the sense an epic length. Was the same with Pantera's final album.

I love St Anger and for me I think it boils down to timing I was too young to really connect with anything before St Anger and just the tone and style of that album really hit me because of where I was in my life ... Metallica for the most part has always had a sound that was essentially controlled chaos like it may have been loud and fast but it was always precise and felt like every note was exactly where it needed to be ... Everybody talks about the snare or the lack of guitar solos of that album, but the real problem with the St. Anger is, the songs are too long, if they where between 3 to 4 minutes no one would have complained, it's just that they are too monotonous to last more than 6 minutes.
From watching Some Kind of Monster I think this album was doomed from the start. They just weren’t in the right mindset, there was too much meddling (at some point their psychiatrist was even giving input ffs), Jason was gone and Bob Rock did a terrible job as a producer.
