The PPH Butterfly - First Aid for post partum haemorrhage 2024

Post-partum haemorrhage (PPH) is the single biggest killer of new mothers worldwide. Around 70,000 women die from a PPH every year - that’s one every seven minutes. Whilst there are medications available for treatment, a simple and effective first aid measure is needed to immediately halt the blood flow. Until now, there has been nothing that can do this.
The PPH Butterfly (PPHB) has been developed by Professor Andrew Weeks and the team at Sanyu Research as a complete PPH management tool. It simultaneously diagnoses the source of the bleeding and provides instant treatment without the need for medicines. Although it uses the principles of traditional bimanual compression, the way that pressure is put on the uterus is less invasive, provides dignity to the mother, and can be sustained by the doctor or midwife for up to 30 minutes. If the bleeding continues despite compression, then it is likely that the bleeding is coming from a genital tract tear and attention rapidly turned to its repair.
In clinical trials, 85% of doctors felt that it assisted with their management of the PPH, and 100% of women wanted the device used again if they had another PPH.
Two clinical studies have been completed testing this device, both funded by the NIHR Invention for Innovation (i4i) programme and sponsored by the University of Liverpool.
