Like most gray-haired Genesis fans, this is the Genesis we love, challenging, theatrical, musically complex but accessible. If you want to go for the big one, check out the live version of the epic Supper's Ready. Needless to say, you didn't hear this version of Genesis on the radio. A lot of Genesis fans say it died when Gabriel left, personally I think it was when Hackett left and the band became focused on becoming a pop band that sold millions and millions of records. BUT it is the music you grew up with that sticks with you.

    From 1971 "Nursery Cryme"....
. The lyrics are based on a Victorian fairy tale written by Gabriel, about two children in a country house. The girl, Cynthia, kills the boy, Henry, by cleaving his head off with a croquet mallet. She later discovers Henry's musical box. When she opens it, "Old King Cole" plays, and Henry returns as a spirit, but starts aging very quickly. This causes him to experience a lifetime's sexual desire in a few moments, and he tries to persuade Cynthia to have sexual intercourse with him. However, the noise causes his nurse to arrive, and she throws the musical box at him, destroying them both. The album cover shows Cynthia holding a croquet mallet, with a few heads lying on the ground

They expand on the story in some live performances where Henry goes to heaven and gets rejected saying he needs to go back to earth to live more but in the body of an old man. And the end is him talking to Cynthia. Mind of a boy, body of an old man.
Weird and a bit creepy but excellent piece.

Also, in an interview with the five of them in 2014, Tony Banks (pianist) mentioned that they never knew what Peter was going to be wearing so the first time they did the Musical Box, and Peter came out with the old man outfit, Tony's thought was 'what's happening..?' because Peter had learned that if he told them about the costumes beforehand he had a very good chance of being told no, he can't do that. :D

I grew up in the '70s, and Genesis was one of the bands that really turned me into a prog-head. I always loved the theatrics from the Peter Gabriel era. Other bands from the era also had theatrics, such as Alice Cooper and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. From what I understand, a big part of why Gabriel did it was that it helped him deal with performance anxiety, but the rest of the band wasn't big fans of it. He actually looks like he's in a different band, but wow what a talent. And what talents the rest of the band were too!

Progressive? Ah, yes and avant-garde. Dramatic. Big changes and lots of dynamics. Bizarre story lines with magical soundscapes. Yes, Phil had hair back then but still had a great voice. A real bell bottom 'hippie'. They influenced a ton of bands. "tearing it up" is so true. Genesis had a strange sense of humor. This story is beyond weird. Gabriel is playing a guy who gets caught up in a musical box and ages dramatically. You should see Phil singing this tune at Knebsworth in the '90s. Fantastic. (but Phil did NOT use costumes or make-up) Check out more from this era.
Another sci-fi type tune from early on is a banger called "Watcher of the Skies" about an alien finding Earth dead and wondering what happened. Two classic Prog masterpieces with Gabriel are: "Firth of Fifth" (about a fictitious river) and "Supper's Ready" (loosely based on the book of Revelation) Great music. After Gabriel left for a solo career, Phil hit some prog tunes and later the charts! As you probably know they ruled the world in the mid-'80s. "Dance on a Volcano" is wild. Some say it is about how Collins felt coming out front and singing for the band.
    So many other great tunes.

Touring live after Gabriel, they brought in Chester Thompson to play drums when Collins was out front, and for a couple of numbers Bill Bruford played. On the Seconds Out live recording Collins and Thompson both play and their kits are set up symmetricly (Collins left handed, Thompson right). What they do in Dance on a Volcano and Apocalypse in 9/8 is stunning. I wish I'd been there!

You have to understand the story! It is so intense. Back in the day, there were albums with liner notes that explained the story. So you would know it is about a boy beheaded by a girl when he was young, his spirit trapped in a musical box. Then he's freed by the girl opening the musical box, and experiences a whole lifetime, including the lust and passion in just a few seconds before his spirit is gone. Get it now?

    Seton Hill,
The name of this record is Nursery Crimes. The song “Musical box” is about a nursery crime or infant crime. The album cover is inspired by the song “Musical box”.
The (made up) story is that children are playing lawn croquet. The game you tap wood balls with a mallet thru wire frames.
The little girl comes from behind and beheads the little boy. The boys head goes up in the air never to come down ,until he is an old man. And he confronts the girl who beheaded him as a child.
Peter Gabriel wrote very odd lyrics for Genesis songs. I don’t think “ The musical box” was a true fairy tale ,just a song Peter made up for the nursery crimes album.
In the cover you see the girl on a lawn playing croquet and the boys head rolling on the ground.
It IS weird ya’ll. That’s why early Genesis is an AQUIRED taste. Genesis was an early leader in progressive rock like Yes ,and King Crimson.

I started to get in to Genesis when invisible touch came out, I was 15 and really enjoyed the album and wanted to find out more about the band and went backwards through their albums. I had no idea the Peter Gabriel from sledgehammer was anything to with the band. Then one day I was round a friend’s house and talking about how I liked Genesis. Their dad said I have some bootleg VHS of Genesis and put it on and it had an old show from this era and remember thinking WTF is that. 😅 scared the hell out of me. 😮 Anyway as years went on I bought the older albums and each one was different and took me some time to get in to. But I love those albums now and love this band in all its different stages. Genesis to me are the greatest band, so full of talent who just did their own thing without care if anyone else liked it. By doing that they created some of the most magical music in history. Don’t let the “No Peter, No Genesis”, “Phil ruined the band” muppets tell you any different, they are just progressive rock fans that could not progress.

May I suggest you Firth of Fifth, Dancing in the Moonlite Knight ("Selling Englang by the Pound" versions) and The Knife (live version, 1973).
Genesis was an amazing prog rock band (my favorite actually) and, as the drummer you are, you would really appreciate the incredible creativity, subtility and talent of Phil at this time...

So yes, progressive rock in the 70's used to be like that. Genesis was one of the most important progrock bands of all time. About influences, Pink Floyd was before them but bands like Rush, Marillion, Dream Theater, Queen, Van Halen and even Iron Maiden were influenced by them.

  • @patcow9999

Peter Gabriel always brought the theatre in old Genesis, not sure it was always welcomed by the band, however IMO it only worked because of his voice and the tightness/talent of the musicians. I love the reactions across the pond when their first exposure to Phil Collins is his live In the Air Tonight drumming at the end, then they see his proper percussion skills. He was quite literally one of the best in the World.

At 7:10 you get a glimpse of how this song was originally performed, when they were between guitar players and Tony took the role of soloist in the band. That's one reason their music regularly had long keyboard solos. Plus Phil was definitely a beast of a drummer from Day 1. Otherwise all you have to know is that Genesis were easily the most "English" of the early progressive rock bands. Peter Gabriel is one of the quintessential examples of the "shy kid who used music to come out of his shell". He learned the moment he put on the red dress and fox's head mask that shocking audiences had its advantages! The only thing anyone had to compare this to at the time was David Bowie or Roxy Music.

If you look back there was a band that was probably the most progressive of them all... Still I love this era of Genesis, and Peter Gabriel did go and do some really good solo stuff, just like Phil Collins and most of the rest of the band. They were true musicians, so much talent, they didn't need artificial input from a computer to enhance their work. As for that other band well, how many of you can guess the one I still admire the most? That's for the review, always great to hear older stuff getting the recognition it deserves, even if it doesn't meet formular cash cow music I hear today.

Lead vocals and flute here are Peter Gabriel. Phil Collins plays drums and provides BGVs. Later, Gabriel left the band, and Collins took over lead vocals. What less people know is that Phil Collins, during a short hiatus of Genesis, formed a band with John Goodsall (guitars), Robin Lumley (keys), and Percy Jones (bass) called "Brand X" - jazz-oriented fusion/prog - as much as I love early Genesis, I actually prefer Phil's drumming for Brand X! Check out "Nuclear Burn" or "Smacks of Euphoric Hysteria" to hear Phil in an entirely different environment!
