We were 17-18 years old. We knew Genesis were good. We all had their albums and went to their shows. One night, I invited my friends over to my parents' house to listen to that VHS - the Mama tour VHS. We were in the living room (my parents were forbidden from stepping in) listening to that show, speechless, I mean, totally speechless. I think we may have listened to it three times in a row. We couldn't believe it. We weren't doing drugs, we weren't drinking or anything. We were just deeply impressed by the musicianship and moved by the performance. It's an evening that stayed with us all our lives. Genesis were otherworldly. These days, we are 57-58 years old. One only needs to mention that show to bring tears of joy to our eyes... Man were they good....

It doesn't get any better than this! They were all in top form. The way Phil comes from a really taxing drum performance (which he makes look effortless) and walks down and a few seconds later gives a stellar vocal on Afterglow is simply mind-blowing.❤

Thats why ‘In the Cage’ was so loved by fans in the live shows as it was almost always merged with an amazing medley of instrumentals and some of the most powerful moments of their stage shows were built around it. Its amazing all the efforts and changes, dances routine, special effects, musicianship that goes in that show. But I look at Genesis at that time... Playing that kind of music, with so many key changes and instrumentals, Phil singing high notes and playing the drums... You cant compare😮 These people are and where hard working. True greatness🎉

I saw Genesis Mama tour at NEC, Birmingham, 1984. This is one of the best live prog medleys I've experienced, up there with Yes for musicianship and emotion, amazing light show too. You could feel the power of the music building to final release with Afterglow, taking the audience through the whole gamut of sight and sound. Bought the concert video a year later, after much use not the best anymore, please re-issue on DVD! Keep it going Doug.

My introduction to Genesis was when I was about 15 years old and I was at a friend's house. He put on an album called Nursery Cryme, and that was blown away. I had never heard anything like that before.
My first tour was the Duke tour here in Illinois at the Rosemont horizon in Rosemont, IL on June 6th of 1980. Among their setlist was Duke's Travels / Dukes End, Los Endos, the closing section of the musical box, the knife (holy moly, what a hard, grinding song!), and this medley. I agree that the medley wasn't quite up to the standard that the 84 tour (which I also saw) had, but it still electrified the arena. Besides the very lights and the fog machines, one of the things that left me with a feeling I can still remember to this day is the deep tones from Mike on his bass pedals. Those tones shook the whole place and sent chills up and down your spine. There's where the best concerts I've ever been to, with Rush being second.

One of Tony's underrated strengths is the way he transitions from keys. The first section of "Afterglow" goes from G to Eb with Cm6->E/B->A/E->B/E->Em-F#dim7->Eb (an elaborate and fairly tense move) and then goes back to G via Eb->Bb/D->C->D->G which is much smoother and resolves the tension.
This medley (the 3SL version) is what got me into keyboards. The interplay between the keys and the drums is so exciting and I knew I'd never be able to play drums. Thanks for doing this.

Doug thank you for reacting to this wonderful performance by my favourite band. Genesis were just so good live, I was lucky enough to see the legendary six of the best show in 1982 when I was 17 ( a one off show with Genesis and Peter Gabriel ) doing all their 70’s classics and Steve Hackett joining at the end for an encore of the knife. In total I have seen Genesis live over 5 tours over the years. Phil was an exceptional singer drummer and entertainer, he would tell little stories and jokes between the songs. Yes we have the films and videos of the live performances, but they never can fully capture the impact and magic of Genesis playing live. So sorry you never got the opportunity to see them live, although Steve Hackett’s band live is the next best thing, and highly recommended.

Genesis in concert was the fullest way to appreciate their music, as it was performed with more energy and passion, as well as they incredible light show/special effects that also helped interpret the varying moods. By 1984, the band had invested so heavily in the development of the computerized VariLites (they were co-owners of the company) that they were the first band to utilize them exclusively on this tour. I believe there were 180 in all, incorporated in 6 pie-piece trusses that could move independently from each other utilizing dozens of electronic motors hung from cables attached to the ceilings of each arena they played. Like their music, the hundreds of hues blended were incredibly complex, beautiful, and awe-inspiring.

I saw Genesis live three times (this lineup), including their first reunion tour (Turn It on Again). I have watched a lot of videos of The Cage, but have yet to see one with a light effect that I loved - in fact, those few seconds were one of the highlights of the concert for me, and I'm sorry they stopped doing it. It's a long time, but as I recall, Phil was standing on a box-like platform. At the second he sang "Stalactites", beams of light shot down from above, and when he sang "Stalagmites", beams of light shot up from below, effectively creating a cage of bars of light around him. It made me catch my breath every time (I think they only did it the first two times I saw them). So dramatic.

Back then it was me, the Genesis fan, and then everyone else in my crowd, into everything else but Genesis. Lo and behold, Genesis announced they were coming to Winnipeg for this tour and I immediately jumped on the phone and bought 8 tickets, row 16 floor and invited my non-believer friends to attend. Needless to say it was way, way more than they expected. Those vari-lights were the best thing any of us had ever seen, so perfectly matched to the style of Genesis. And the medley was such an intense non-stop onslaught of incredible music we could hardly catch our breath. Easily the best concert any of us had ever seen (ok, my bias!) and we had seen quite a few great ones (Bowie, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Van Halen, Neil Young to name a few). On to today: this friday it's off to the Winnipeg Centennial Concert Hall to watch the Genesis cover band, The Musical Box, doing the Selling England by the Pound concert. Bringing my son and a friend, should be a blast. Second time seeing The Musical Box, and the first time which was a few years ago, was fantastic -definitely recommend them!

To see and hear Genesis live is the most spectacular experience. They were so damn good. Iv seen so many bands, but no one really no one beats Genesis. The older I may become, the more I admire there great skills. Love those guys.

@@danclark745 After watching this performance you are actually saying they weren't great here? Why make it a contest? Gabriel bailed on the band, never produced another piece of prog after that (though great music is his own style), while the core of Genesis continued to provide us new and old prog in concert. And noone, absolutely noone could have been better than Phil in stepping up and taking over the lead vocals. He isn't Peter, but he is fantastic in his own way. In the Cage has never been sung live better, ever.

@@Vince-lq3ve Comments talk about skill and great players, great musicians are a dime a dozen. The inspiration, the imagination, these are fleeting things, set and setting, a time and a place, after Lamb it was gone, only thing left to do was cash in...just look at Phil's ridiculous pop tunes...gated drums anyone! These guys are great but don't confuse Music with Business.

    • @Vince-lq3ve

@@danclark745 I hear what you are saying but it should be noted that Peter Gabriel wrote the lyrics for the Lamb, while the rest of the band wrote the music in a separate room. That applies to pretty much 90% of the album. So, yes, while Peter brought his excellent clever lyrics with him, and his voice and unique live presentation, the creativity of the actual music was brought forth primarily by Tony Banks and then Mike Rutherford with additional contributions by Phil Collins and Steve Hackett (though not much by Steve other than some beautiful sprinkling touches). So, after Gabriel left, what remained was actually the music writing, which to me is the defining part of what makes Genesis, Genesis.. Yes, the lyrics went down a notch but the important folks were still there to write amazing songs. So, as usual, the singer gets too much credit. Tony is the real deal here, always has been.

@@Vince-lq3ve No doubt, the early 12 string stuff is also really cool, however, Music, is so much about the context, surprising the good doctor does not go into this more, the history of rock is so rich, Prog was over by '77, so this concert is primarily a history lesson, bands like Dream Theatre, Rush, they're playing historical music, just like a band playing Rock-a-Billy today. Interestingly enough a keyboard player this summer did 'Genesis Piano Project', its great and a real testament to what you are saying, as Rutherford and Banks on solo piano is killer. Going back and listening to old music out of context as if it was created in a vacuum just looses so much. I'm sure Doug knows this, as the history of classical music is amazing and tells the real human story of all of this stuff. Now, you got me remembering seeing Lamb live, the girl I went with was the high school's paper reporter and we chased Gabriel into a hotel bar, I didn't have the guts to go in but she slipped in.. thinking about context, we went from Genesis to Sex Pistols in what 2.5 years? unbelievable looking back at it.

22:50 is a nod to More Trouble Everyday from Frank Zappa’s Roxy & Elsewhere of which Chester played on, & I believe is one of the reasons Phil wanted Chester to replace Bill for the W&W tour.

Good things of being over 60... I Did... a dozen times, I think... solo band members tours too. Starting with the Lamb Tour with Peter Gabriel in Cascais, Portugal back in 75... It was really imersive and an amazing show... and then I attended their Concerts every Tour ( from 76 on) for I was studying Architecture in Paris... I used to follow their Tours at several places in Europe... Actually my favotite band... Thank you... Should listen to the "Old Medley" in their "We can Dance" - the Longs live album... Best regards from Portugal.

A KILLER version of the "In The Cage medley", Genesis are here at the top of their game....... also an interesting contrast here is hearing their 70´s music being performed on 80´s sounding instruments, it gives a "new" perspective of their older music.
