Stunned that I have this to look forward to! Another revelatory (!) song from my mid-teens. I hope to join you if the kids are down. The song is of course phenomenal ❤❤❤❤
@@L33Reacts Among my top prog songs, this, CTTE, and Gates are tied. This was the first among those to touch my heart from the 3 12-strings (Tony plays one!) at the start to the apocalyptic keys and the final guitar fade at the very end. Pure magic ❤️
Thanks Lee! I'm so glad you're seeing Supper's Ready live, and that you heard the album version first. This performance is sublime; it is just perfect and Genesis is in their early 20s! Unreal. There are so many contrasts in the performance: Peter is in black while all the others are in white. Peter gets into these amazing artistic theatrical performances while everyone else just sits and plays their instruments, perfectly of course. And the music goes through contrasting parts. That was Mike Rutherford playing the double necked guitar, a 6 string and a 4 string bass, by Rickenbacker- and the tone is tasty good. There are no extras, it's all Genesis. They are amazing no? I didn't realize how steeped in biblical knowledge you are Lee. Cool. Interesting that Peter's last name is Gabriel, like the archangel, and the band name is Genesis. There's a strong Christian spirituality here, or it's all just a coincidence.
I saw them around this time at Toronto's fabled sonic shrine Massey Hall. 'Selling England by the Pound'. Incredible musical performance only enhanced by Peter's theatricality. Was briefly puzzled by your reference to a "touring member", an extra support player after Mike picked up the Rickenbacher double neck after having previously identifying Steve and Mike on acoustics. Nevermind, no worries. 😅😊❤
Last month I saw The Musical Box (a tribute band from Canada) do a full early Genesis concert. It was amazing. The details were crazy exact. They did the entire Gabriel's stick with all his stories. They even had the drummer wear Phil's white overalls. When they covered 'Watcher of the Skies' the blacklights, the huge projected 'eyes' above the band, the whole stage was magical, surreal, very avant-garde. That Genesis could do an entire concert by memory, including 'Supper's Ready' just blows my mind. They were truly unique.
Those of us who weren't aware of Genesis until later are so fortunate to have this. Most of the show was released on the DVD with the surround sound version of Selling England by the Pound. Peter BSd stories to cover for Tony, Mike and Steve who were tuning their 12 string guitars (a pain in the ass).
There is no band or song like Supper's ready live. I mean Yes back then did some great stuff but still nothing like Supper's ready. All these years later & it still stands by itself.
Thanks for the reminder man.... WTF was the right response to his costumes. As a Genesis fan I must be the only one who doesn't rank this as his favourite? except for the magnificent ending that is. Firth of Fifth of course and Burning rope are the ones for me! Just checked out your reaction to The Musical Box. You must try the live version on The Midnight Special, the same quality, but with Gabriel's theatrics and makeup. Much less outlandish than in Supper's Ready and definitely adding to the performance. You'll be surprised!
Another great reaction and great choice of recording. In some shows Gabriel was actually lifted up on a wire at the end. I saw them perform this in London in 76 with Phil on vocals and Bill Bruford on drums. The inflatable flowers exploding from the side of the stage during Willow Farm sent the audience crazy.
Okay, I haven't seen this comment yet, so I apologize if it's already here. 6:06 Tony Banks on guitar. A rare sight, at least for me. It's fair that you thought an extra man was up there. I just watched your New Year video and it's so good! I hope your 2024 is amazing!

@@L33Reacts it was crazy to hear Firth of Fifth and Suppers Ready. So maybe we can chat on your channel. Are you an Old School Gamer? I've only played 1st and 2nd edition D&D. The first time I played was 1980, Freshmen year in college. I knew nothing about the game. We played until 3am, and all I wanted to do was keep playing. How about you?
“There’s no Genesis song that would’ve sounded anything like it did if I hadn’t been around,” Banks says later. “If you don’t like Genesis, I’m what you don’t like.
Brilliant. Glad i caught the live show. Lee, mea culpa. I checked Wiki and indeed there is speculation that Jill Gabriel had taken something. I’m pretty sure that other than his one-off disastrous hashish experience, Pete did nothing and was is a lifetime teetotaler. So you were right ❤
Steve Hackett has re-recorded Supper's Ready for his 2011 album Genesis Revisited II. On this, he had different guest singers: Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth, Conrad Keely from ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Francis Dunnery from It Bites and Simon Collins (Phil's oldest son), who delivers a brilliant vocal performance on Apocalypse In 9/8. 😊 But Steve himself also provides lead vocals on Willow Farm. Genesis has always been a band of creative equals. I don't think it would be fair to say that only one person was 100% Genesis. The great thing about these guys, along with other members incl. Ray Wilson and Anthony Phillips, is that they never had a definitive album like Dark Side Of The Moon, Tubular Bells or something like that. The writing on each album, all the way from 1969's From Genesis To Revelation to 1997's Calling All Stations, is "too diverse", to quote Mike Rutherford. And to me, having such brilliant versatility is healthy. Peter didn’t write all the lyrics to the Foxtrot album either. Time Table was entirely by Tony, who, along with Mike, wrote the lyrics to Watcher Of The Skies. And Can-Utility And The Coastliners was Steve's lyric.
great reaction. revisiting this and seeing your reaction makes it impossible not to recommend a bit of Peter Gabriel solo, I just discovered this one recently. one of the weirder more atmospheric tracks off pg4 (security) in a live performance that really surprised me. great quality. search "peter gabriel lay your hands athens 1987" and it'll pop right to the top. another song with religious overtones that may resonate. anyway, hope you do it soon and have fun.
If you want to feel what it was like to be at a Genesis concert, you should go to see a performance by the Genesis tribute band called The Musical Box. They are a French Canadian band that tour every year throughout the US and Europe. The band attained the rights to all of the costumes that Peter wore. Peter and Phil have given them their stamp of approval. They are awesome. You would think you were seeing Genesis back in the day. They probably come to your area. Check with the theaters where you live, you won't regret it!! I have been going to their shows since 2007.
@L33Reacts No touring member, just them 5. At the beginning Steve, Mike and Tony played guitars. Steve & Tony a 12-string. Then Tony left the guitar and played keys, while a little later Steve changed his. And some part Mike grabbed the 2 neck bass & guitar. Don’t remember if he played a normal bass somewhere in the song too
Live I think Mike usually added bass pedal notes while playing the acoustic (6 string), which he swopped for the Rickenbacker electric bass (twin neck) for the latter part - if I remember rightly he used the twin neck (incl. a Shergold) a bit later on. It's difficult to see whether he actually plays the bass pedals (for the first 5 mins odd) as we don't really see his legs - but you can hear those bass notes....probably this section is dubbed on from a live tape - widely rumoured to be the Rainbow concert of 73 broadcast by the BBC ( listening again to the Rainbow concert, I doubt this). One of the 'mistakes' of this version of the film is that we see Tony playing the 12 string after he has started to play the Hohner pianet N and Hammond (I think the 100L, but can't quite see)
Supper's Ready es una pieza maestra del rock progresivo, música que no se volverá a crear, por eso hay que disfrutarla al máximo y difundirla entra las nuevas generaciones...
Genesis were given the name in 1967 by an ex- Charterhouse pupil called Jonathan King who was a singer, songwriter and producer at the time, he produced their first 3 singles and the album Genesis to Revelation, the album was put in the religious section in music stores and only sold 649 copies. unfortunately In September 2001 Jonathan King was convicted of an unforgivable crime and sent to prison for 7 years.
Peter has said he never did acid. Richard Macphail said in his (very good) book 'My Book of Genesis' that he didn't (but nowhere have I seen that Gabriel didn't do mushrooms, lol) Phil has said they might enjoy a spliff before a performance or at rehearsals.
Best live version of Suppers ready with original line up is a full length performance on French t.v.. I think from 1973? Check it out. I can see your a fan of Genesis style lyrics and progressive rock. As the germ in a seed grows we finally been freed to get back home.!!!!!
You NEED to hear this live from 1977 - with Phil Collins singing. (It’s actually better - let the hate come). I interviewed Genesis in 1981. Suffice to say Tony Banks is not a fan of Gabriel’s claims about the meaning of the song. “Pete’s just trying to be mysterious. This is a simple song that equates Hitler with the Antichrist. The song is rather simple, actually. It’s full of World War II references.”
They had practised this song for 4 more years and in 77 They were grown man 27 years old. They had become better musicians. Has norhing to do with Phil singing. This is Peter work. And Tony’s.
I started hearing this stuff wafting out of study windows at my boarding school in the early/mid 70s and then from little mono tape machines in the junior study room, awful sound, on cassettes donated by older brothers. After a couple of years I could finally afford to buy the records themselves. I have never looked back. I have just shy of 17,000 files on my ipod. If I was told I had to delete everything bar one band I would keep my pre `75 Genesis. Even now after 50 years I actually got to see them just before Gabriel left, at the Empire Pool on the Lamb tour. My friend and I were 14. So by far the youngest out of 10,000 on the night ! A bootleg of the whole thing is here on this site.

This is called entertainment not like today they didn't have computers 60s 70s
You'll often see this film referred to as the "Shepperton" concert. Back in the early 70's it was crazy hard to film indoors concerts, usually because the lighting was crap, but also where do you put your cameras? Just watch the Yessongs film from the Rainbow Theater as an example. To get around this problem Genesis' management rented a soundstage at Shepperton Studios. That way they could set up as many lights and cameras wherever they wanted (and the lighting is still not that good, but no doubt the budget was tiny.) As I recall, they invited members of their fan club in to give it some concert authenticity, plus to give the band someone to play to (and to get some cheering on tape, which was 'enhanced' in post-production.) IMO the live version filmed for the French 'Melody' TV program in 1974 is overall better than this, although it's marred by some unfortunate video effects end editing (ua-cam.com/video/G3IpvFXj2Yw/v-deo.html).
My favorite version is on the SECONDS OUT live album. Phil does the vocals, but does a fantastic job of it. I think Tony said it was their best version. Let the music play!

Stunned that I have this to look forward to! Another revelatory (!) song from my mid-teens. I hope to join you if the kids are down. The song is of course phenomenal ❤❤❤❤
I hope you can make it! It was a fantastic performance.... and when Peter sheds the darkness at the end... wow. Just wow.
UNBELIEVABLE....there's nothing better
It's great to see someone from a younger generation hearing the greatest song from the greatest album. You are reliving my youth.
Was AT THIS CONCERT at the age of 20 with my once and always best friend...with orange sunshine of course. Thanks for your channel!
They’ve remastered the Midnight Special video of live Musical Box and it’s totally worth the re-watch!
Yes, excellent, especially for younger people.
However, both performed songs. Genesis started with Watcher Of The Skies.
wow j'avais jamais vu Tony Bank jouer de la guitare!
I can't think of anyone, other than David Gilmour, who plays his guitar with such emotion and expression as Steve Hackett..
Andy Latimer
Those of us who weren't aware of Genesis until later are so fortunate to have this. Most of the show was released on the DVD with the surround sound version of Selling England by the Pound. Peter BSd stories to cover for Tony, Mike and Steve who were tuning their 12 string guitars (a pain in the ass).
Is that what that was in the beginning?? I was wondering what the hell was going on.
My hands down Genesis favorite! Thanks!
There is no band or song like Supper's ready live. I mean Yes back then did some great stuff but still nothing like Supper's ready. All these years later & it still stands by itself.
Peter with the Watcher of the Skies is Awesome
Great reaction. I didn't play a note on that song, but I'm pleased you enjoyed it 😊
Thanks for the reminder man....
A flower?
Steve Hacket still performs Genesis songs with his amazing band of musicians, if they come your way, go see them, you will not be disappointed .
Okay, I haven't seen this comment yet, so I apologize if it's already here. 6:06 Tony Banks on guitar. A rare sight, at least for me. It's fair that you thought an extra man was up there. I just watched your New Year video and it's so good! I hope your 2024 is amazing!
You are too kind brie :) thank you so much! I hope you have a wonderful 2024 as well. And I was so confused over that 😂 Thanks for pointing that out. What a show. I'm glad you enjoyed the new years video ☺️☺️
The best live performance of this song, for me, is the one on "Seconds Out."
I heard it's amazing! I'll have to check it out.
you should its amazing for some best album live of all time @@L33Reacts
When I need some Genesis I listen to Seconds Out
sorry, without Peter and his show it cannot be as good, Ps ; I have the record and i've listened to Seconds Out several times, Still like this version more
@@KurtSauers-mi5ev you'are not a real true Genesis' fan
Thank you so much for this!.....I've seen odd clips of Genesis, back in the day, but not this ....wow!
One word. Brilliant.
Classic Prog Royalty the Genesis "Peter Gabriel" Ers 1970'-75' 👍
And routinely voted Classic Progs Greatest Epic by Prog Magazines yearly poll 🏆🎶
Now and then Yes - Close to the Edge is voted #1 but it's always CTTE and Supper's Ready in the Top 2 spots !! 👍🎼
@@kbrewski1 Yes Supper Ready is Amazing !! 🎶
I never listened to 70s Genesis until several years ago. Imagine my shock after thinking Genesis was just a Pop Rock band 😱
That must have been quite a shock. I know it was for me too. Abacab was the second song I did i think... and to my surprise that was.... nothing compared to what was coming lol
Imagine the disappointment of someone into Genesis since Nursery Cryme, then they went 'Pop'. I've never forgiven them!!
@@lemming9984 Phil Collins knew what he was doing. He followed the money.
“There’s no Genesis song that would’ve sounded anything like it did if I hadn’t been around,” Banks says later. “If you don’t like Genesis, I’m what you don’t like.
Cool react!! You got to see the tribute band The Musical Box... It's a must!
Giving you a like before I even watch. My #2 prog epic behind The Gates of Delirium. Let's get started!
Thanks Dennis! I hope you enjoyed brother. I had a blast with this video 🙃
Interesting analysis. 💙🎵🎶🎶 You Rock!!
Thanks Renee! No, YOU rock :)
hee hee 🥰
Brilliant. Glad i caught the live show. Lee, mea culpa. I checked Wiki and indeed there is speculation that Jill Gabriel had taken something. I’m pretty sure that other than his one-off disastrous hashish experience, Pete did nothing and was is a lifetime teetotaler. So you were right ❤
Genesis Supper's Ready live second's out is the best
As sure as eggs is eggs ( aching man's feet) is such a great outro to an amazing quintessential Prog song.
A right, proper Prog song this one and no mistake. Credit to you for reacting to such a long piece of work.
And Can-Utility And The Coastliners was Steve's lyric.
amazing performance and some insightful comments at the end👍
Hey thanks Steven I appreciate that. And I totally agree, it's frickin awesome lol
great reaction. revisiting this and seeing your reaction makes it impossible not to recommend a bit of Peter Gabriel solo, I just discovered this one recently. one of the weirder more atmospheric tracks off pg4 (security) in a live performance that really surprised me. great quality. search "peter gabriel lay your hands athens 1987" and it'll pop right to the top. another song with religious overtones that may resonate. anyway, hope you do it soon and have fun.
You finally did it...bravo!
Wooooo! What a ride it was too lol
Quite right. I've seen them do their Lamb show. Outstanding.
I am going to see them if they come by Baltimore or DC for sure. I would love to see that..
I had Magog as a Halloween costume in 1980, once. Worst idea. I took up too much space on the couch!
😅😆😆😆😆😆
One of the 'mistakes' of this version of the film is that we see Tony playing the 12 string after he has started to play the Hohner pianet N and Hammond (I think the 100L, but can't quite see)
Saw them do this at the little bitty Roxy on the Sunset Strip. Amazing!
I bet it was fantastic... I'm jealous lol
Another great reaction bro!🎸
You rock brother thank you so much! 🙏
Supper's Ready es una pieza maestra del rock progresivo, música que no se volverá a crear, por eso hay que disfrutarla al máximo y difundirla entra las nuevas generaciones...
Supper's Ready Seconds Out
I saw them do this live in 1974 in Indianapolis. The ticket for that concert cost a whole $5.00
Fuckin a man.... I wish. Nowadays it's 9 bucks for a gallon of milk. I can't imagine how much some tickets cost for even mid level bands lol
The Live version is The best, with Phil Collins.
Keep Rocking,
Ronnie Scotland
Genesis were given the name in 1967 by an ex- Charterhouse pupil called Jonathan King who was
a singer, songwriter and producer at the time, he produced their first 3 singles and the album Genesis to Revelation, the album was put in the religious section in music stores and only sold 649 copies. unfortunately In September 2001 Jonathan King was convicted of an unforgivable crime and sent to prison for 7 years.
one of teh greatest song of all
I agree. Wholeheartedly. This is a masterpiece among masterpieces.
Great stuff my friend
Thank you John! I appreciate it! 🙏
Peter has said he never did acid. Richard Macphail said in his (very good) book 'My Book of Genesis' that he didn't (but nowhere have I seen that Gabriel didn't do mushrooms, lol) Phil has said they might enjoy a spliff before a performance or at rehearsals.
Phil wasn't bored its his drumming face 👍
Best live version of Suppers ready with original line up is a full length performance on French t.v.. I think from 1973? Check it out. I can see your a fan of Genesis style lyrics and progressive rock. As the germ in a seed grows we finally been freed to get back home.!!!!!
Seconds Out live version 💯
The best one by far
Seconds out is gonna be a special thing I do on new years I believe. SO you don't have to wait too long for it;)
I can't wait. It's simply the best live Genesis album and in my top 3 favourite albums of all time.
This was good Lee for your first time you may want to even extend it a little bit in the future.. I know Scott goes an hour and a half on Sunday😊
I recommend Dance on a Volcano and Los Endos from Seconds Out. Your won't regret it.
Nice Channel.
JT
Thanks JT! I am actually planning on doing something from seconds out on new years!
Audience tripping on LSD watching this, probably still tripping 50 years later 🤯🤯🤯😀😀😀
Even now after 50 years
I actually got to see them just before Gabriel left, at the Empire Pool on the Lamb tour. My friend and I were 14. So by far the youngest out of 10,000 on the night ! A bootleg of the whole thing is here on this site.
Check out PG doing Talk to Me live - he always kept up the theatrical angle, even later on.
I am definitely gonna be doing more solo PG stuff next month! I did in your eyes last week and it was transcendent
It's an amazing tune for sure but NOW, listen to the Seconds Out live version with Phil singing. It'll blow your mind. That's all I'll say.
As far as I am aware Peter only took drugs twice in his life the experience was so awful that he never touched them again.
9/8
I touring member !!!!! 😳😲😖 WWWWhat !!!!!!!!!! Come on man Lol
Lee at least learn the history of the Best band Ever on Wiki , Okay ☺✌
Gabriel/ Banks/ Hackett, Rutherford & Collins ..... The Greatest of the Great !!! 🎶
A Musicians Band 👍
No tour guy there!
Steve Hackett on the far left!
then Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and finally Tony Banks on the right side...
There was only the 5 of them. Mike changed up to the doubleneck.
Yeah I didn't realize they were moving around the stage LOL I was like what is going on??
'That other guy' is Steve Hackett! Not just some 'tour guy'.
Pro-tip: you DONT need drugs to have a creative mind and be able to look at things from weird angles. You just need to train your mind to do that by freeing it from shackles that tell you to "BELIEVE in this ideology".
This is called entertainment not like today they didn't have computers 60s 70s
If you want to know what he is able to do with his voice you need to listen to Rythm of the Heat from 3:44 till 4:02.
Agreed!
Agreed too!
Agree, musically they were better on the Seconds Out version
I recommend that you read the lyrics and the story behind this song. It’s actually quite creepy 😅
