- I'm trying the hammer and chisel on my marble bonsai pot! I hope to shape the pot into a more elegant style.

Hello Nigel, I really enjoy your videos! Can't believe I was missing this series! I just wanted to say that, if you're going to continue working with marble, it would be best for your health to get proper safety equipment as the crystalline silica dust is persistent and can cause irreversible lung damage. Especially if you work work with powertools, do any sanding, or chisel with your face so close to the marble. If silica dust gets inside your lungs, it's very hard to remove. It's not a terribly common disease on hobbyists, but damage can occur. It's better safe than sorry and you don't want to be part of that statistic. Love your videos, can't wait for the final result! :) - San

When I lived in Ohio my bonsai went through these dormant periods. I'm restarting bonsai now since I'm retired and living in Colombia. Fortunately every day here is springtime. So even when the trees rest they are still beautiful and requires active tree care.

I'd make a template so all the feet end up the same, and I'd use a dremel and an angle grinder. The impacts of your wood chisel and mallet approach could upset the marble! Plan B would be to mark the thing out as you want it and take it to a stonemason. Not as hands-on but much safer. Just saying.

Awesome!! Makes me wanna carve one of the slabs of marble I have. I intend to make a mortar and pestle out of (part of) one, but a pot would be a great idea for the (entire) other slab.
Rather than work on the floor, I would recommend setting the piece on a bag of sand, or a bag of dirt if you don't have a bag of sand. (Which I strongly suspect you do). It absorbs the vibrations (less chance of breaking), dampens the noise a bit, and keeps the piece firmly in place. You can even keep it on the rotating platform, as long as that platform itself doesn't wobble. Wobble can lead to unrecoverable mistakes. You only get one chance when carving stone -- Altho this type of marble is pretty forgiving.
Working on the floor will only end in back and neck aching, most likely. :D
IIRC marble chisels are hardened differently from wood chisels. This will likely ruin that wood chisel. Also, not ALL marble chisels have teeth. Those are more for rough hewing. (Which is what you're currently doing)
Just my 2 cents, maybe try using like a 40 grit sandpaper on an electric sander. I’ve never tried it on that material but to me it seems that a heavy duty sandpaper might help. Definitely to take down the thickness fast and also it would give a more smooth result.

Also.. As a side note and not really related.. If you like the idea of carving mortar you can make up a simple gobbo mix of 2 parts sharp sand, 1 part silver sand, 1 part cement.. Plasticizer if you want to guild the lilly.. As the mortar “Greens off” there’s a space of around an hour where you can do some carving.. It’s how we used to fill in around ornate works or make “Temporary repairs” Also known as a bodge job 😂 But it’s a great trick for making pots 👍🏻

You're supposed to use a masonry chisel. So probably made your work 10x harder. Plus That chisel is toast more than likely

Beautiful carving, but be careful with the square edges/corners, they act as stress risers and may cause the pot to crack more easily, and stones are pretty brittle, that's why these pots are so "chunky"

Nice video mr Saunders, but I think this marble pot is way too heavy when it is filled with soil and may be some stones for landscaping. You aren't 25 anymore.
