Developing Elm Bonsai (Timelapse trunk to bonsai)

  • How do you develop a big elm trunk into a bonsai? A timelapse of over 2 years in which I grow this elm trunk into a bonsai in its first container. Growing a bonsai out starts with growing a good trunk. But after the trunk comes the real work. A repeated proces of growing out, wiring and pruning over several years is what creates the bonsai.

Absolutely brilliant motivational video. I have always found elms respond well to this sort of work. I have quite a few on the go at the moment. They bud so profusely from bare wood that you are normally spoilt with options for the future. I really enjoyed watching this Jelle :)

A nice way to capture the progression of the tree!!!

Thank you, Jelle, for the time, effort, and professionalism you put into a video like this. I hope you also enjoy it! I certainly enjoyed watching this video. Quite apart from providing valuable instruction, it captures the essential bonsai concept of an ongoing conversation with a tree to intercept its very best future. In 100 years, someone will still continue that conversation.

Loved the video, Jelle, and the music! Thank you for sharing! The bark on the tree is fabulous, by the way! 👍

The music somehow makes one think that that is a tree from the "Blade Runner". Stunning result over just 3 years

Amazing Video!! I have spent more time than I care to admit watching bonsai videos the past 3 years learning as much as possible since getting into it and this has to be my favorite! Awesome work and beautiful tree! Thanks for sharing!!

What a handsome tree! And a very inspirational video! Had to pause halfway through and give a quick clean up prune to my elm that I bought just to get cuttings from.

Oh Jelle, this one is a banger..!
    - Love Your videos, I'm always impressed by the effort You put into making each of these - with time lapses where You showcase 1,5 year of training into 7 min-video.. :) Kudos!!
This patricular one hit the homerun for me. Haven't seen something nearly as inspiring, as witnessing the magnitude of improvement you & this elm pulled in just three years.
This might just be an equivalent of 'Rocky Balboa speech' for Bonsai folk :D

Nice work👍. That is a good looking tree that is only going to get better and better in your hands. Many thanks for showing the progression. Even the elevator music wasn't too bad😉.

Great video’s Jelle. I have a few elms myself and far from ready like your elm, but it’s inspiring to see what you do. I did learn so much from your channel just by seeing things, but even when you know certain things I love to see the progression of your trees and the things you teach people. Thanks for sharing this one.

I came here after finding some newly germinated beech seeds. My garden is small: thinking I could through them in a pot then trim later and have a miniature tree it took me less than 13 minutes to realise this is a long term affair. I'm hooked, what is that putty stuff, what's in the tube, where to cut or where not to cut, why did the saw terrify me, cut, snip, chop.......? So I subscribed, not just to find answers but mostly because I am so impressed. Thank you.
