I think that this video got more wrong then it did right. It left a lot out or just entirely missed the point of an arc. Alex didn’t wash out of the MCRN, he flew for them for 20 years and retired with full honors. He also at no point was a coward. Peaches wasn’t a remorseless killer. The first time we see her kill someone she was crying about it. There are a lot of other flaws in this video but those are the most glaring.

I hate to be the guy to overstate the obvious, but their character archs evolved over 6 seasons, not 6 episodes.
Season 1 Holden would’ve warned everyone in the system about the danger posed by the Ring entities, even Marco. And he would’ve done that without giving it much thought. By season 6, Holden runs the big decisions by the appropriate people to see what they say. He also went from a brash, politically naive individual who was worried only for the immediate future, to out playing Avasarala at her own game, and with the long game in mind.
Season 1 Avasarala was just an ambitious cut-throat politician that took her own council, who was only concerned about Earth and her position. By season 6, she became a leader that takes her council from advisors and delegates responsibility, and not only has everyone’s interest at heart, but is willing to put herself on the line for it.
Amos in season 6 learns that he isn’t just a violent muscle headed mechanic who needs to follow the person with the strongest sense of right and right to keep himself straight, nor does that person need to be right always. He’s learned that he has his own moral compass. And that he is a member of a family and that you shouldn’t cut and run just because one them did something idiotic. He’s learned that he’s not just a tool that someone pulls out of box to beat something with, but someone who is capable of heroic acts on their own and restraint. And he’s become someone that others look up to to keep themselves straight. And all of this was already there, he just needed someone to point that out for him.
Season 5 was hard for Naomi. With this season, Holden distracted her with a puzzle so that she could set her emotions aside. And she learns that while she had lost her real family and there’s no way that she’s going to able to get that back, she has a new family in the crew of the Roci.
With their old ties cut, Bobby and Carissa find there sense of belonging with the Roci.
Fillip? He was yow-yow-ing because he was on the verge of breaking made all the harder because of the cult like persona of his father and all of the death that he personally was responsible for, contrasted against the examples set by his mother and the crew of the Roci. He was only holding it together because he believed that what they are doing was for the betterment of, and for the freedom and safety of the people of the Belt, that his father had their interests at heart. Coming to understand that you are part of a cult, that its cause was a big lie to the profit of the big guy, who was his father, and trying to break away from a that group is difficult especially when Filip was already carrying the guilt for having helped his father kill easily many tens of millions on Earth.

I think many of you, including American Ben, are missing a specific element to the character arcs. Throughout the entire series, for many but not all characters, some of the driving themes were about where one belongs, what is family, and where does one fit in the larger scheme of things. Some characters had already answered those questions for themselves and never wavered from those answers (not during the show's events anyway, they changed before the show). One example of this, atleast on the surface, was fred Johnson (circumstances caused subtle changes in how he answered these questions, but not as much as other characters). Others had answered those questions at the beginning, but then found they no longer felt those answers correct, Bobby Draper being a good example of this. Anyway, with those questions used to frame each character, most of them become more dynamic. Even Avaesarala changed in the context of those themes. Holden also evolved from this perspective (he evolved in other ways as well, as old Holden would definitely not have orchestrated Drummer becoming president of the transport union).

Before season, Avasarala had not been a people-facing politician. She was an appointee. She is politically savy, but she had preferred the amount of leeway being at the background gave her. Season 4 showed her struggling to adjust to change.

I would also add that in season 5, she lost her husband in the asteroid attacks. Attacks that were in part a reaction to the policies she supported and actions she condoned or took. She got hit with the consequences. Along with the devastation to earth, she was an emotional shambles, along with everyone else on earth. With that, her more emotional responses and reaching for a moral position makes sense.

    • @KnowledgeDriven
      @KnowledgeDriven 8 місяців тому

Old thread but I thought Avasarala's arc was the most profound. She went from soulless Deep State apparatchik who's career involved moving from one appointed position to the next up the ladder... and in the end was a full-fledged human with empathy although she always retained the quiver of knives if needed from her past sordid career.

I dont think this video highlighted everything at all. In regards to the character arcs, you missed alot. I will stand and say that season 6s conclusion was fantasticly done. Esspecaly from the character side. Amos did arc this season or atleast came to realisation about where he belonged and who he considered family and even opened up even more as he has done so brillintly and gradualy over the whole show.
You completly forgot to mention the whole idea of being emotionaly broken as every character is at the begining of this season, but they all find some hope at the end and so does the system as a whole. Hope.

While I definitely agree that we needed a full 10 episode "final season", the changes weren't as abrupt as GOT. The personality shifts aren't that extreme for Filip when you consider the fact he's been traveling for months on a spaceship. I think they said it was like 3 months from Earth to the ring gate. The belt is like 20% the way to the ring gate.

That wasn't just Drummer's crew. They were literally her family. They were in a queer polyamorous relationship. They loved each other and it was beautiful. That is why Drummer showed so much vulnerability and empathy as each family member left her crew. Their story was probably the most interesting out of all of season 6.

It felt like the writers were heavy handed with Filip’s arc. Killing his best friend seemed over the top as compared to the book where he shot a station security officer. I think that reckless disdain for authority would have sufficiently drove the point of his spiraling out of control under Marco’s watch.

I saw a rich unfolding of evolution in each and all the main characters in this mix of tragedies, heroes and anti-heroes. But the underlining them to the whole thing was the sense of belonging and finding a place to call home.

4:24 There could be a balance between cheap and expensive ones (like 8-10 episodes).
7:15 Avasarala was ruined a lot more than that - as in addition to what you mentioned, she also lost pretty much all of the backbone she demonstrated in Seasons 1-3. Why? Because she made military blunder after military blunder, doesn't know what the concept of retaliating to an attack is, the strategic value of the ring gates, that an Inner ship is worth several times its number in Belter ships at minimum... Avasarala refuses to understand that in a war, you actually have to fight, or that Marco brought the war on the Belt.
8:05 Barely. Yes, there was Avasarala asking if she went soft, but the odd conversation doesn't make up for two seasons of incompetence.
8:43 The Transport Union - like Mars will ever stay in something headed by the belt, negotiated by Holden in bad faith (Holden isn't the brightest person if he thinks Mars will stay in it after he did what he did). He also isn't a purely one dimensional good guy. He placed his relationship with Naomi over killing Marco, other Free Navy officers, destroying the Pella... How does that make someone a completely good person?

In no way are the last two seasons incompitante they are both great seasons, they do well by all chacters, they do amazingly with world building setting, visiuals and plot, avasrala does not that many military blunders from what i can remember, also remember earth is dealing with alot of damage and shortages and earths fleets are over worked, and spread thin.

I liked season six. Yeah it has it’s flaws but it was good. However, i don’t agree with the whole “six expensive episodes or twelve cheap episodes” idea. It seemed completely opposite to me, as though we got six cheap episodes. To me it seemed like they went the cheapest route possible. Look at any season prior and the world building was way bigger. Aside from a few scenes on Ceres, every scene took place in a room or in space where everything was CG. In season one and two, Ceres and Tycho looked and felt like a real place. Hell, even season four and five looked and felt real, but season six just looked and felt fake. Once again, I liked it, but it felt too rushed like they just didnt have the budget.

  • @raw6668
    @raw6668 2 роки тому

I think the reason is more due to the books they are based on. For if I am honest, the books do degrade in quality over time, especially when we reach the Human Empire arc (I can't spell their actual name). Which is part of the reason I am glad the people of the Expanse ended it this season. Don't get me wrong, on a world-building scale, it's great but the author has a habit of introducing characters that never appear again, leave arcs unresolved or shift with little explanation, or just making baffling decisions that do not match the character.
Though, I say this with love for while I like shows or media like the Expanse, Babylon 5, Stargate Star Trek, and Star Wars I am not ignorant of their flaws. You can enjoy work even if it is not perfect. And I love the Expanse for its world-building, battle sequences, and showing that while the world can be grey if not bleak, it does not mean you cannot be good.

The writers for the series had a lot to deal with from Alex Kamal departure to condensing a massive storyline into 6 episodes. What I don't understand why they introduced the black eyed boy on Laconia knowing nothing will ever come of it, that was wasted screen time. My advice read the books or get them on audiobook, so much more depth and story though the final book Leviathan Falls was more a let down than the other 8. Although I did continue watching the show until it's end, I knew that I had to temper my expectations for stories being filled out properly when Amos returned to Baltimore. I had already noticed small ways in which the show writers were willing to deviate from the books or alter a character for the sake of convenience, but I already know the biz isn't perfect. All I know is that Baltimore is already a city that has seen better days and it is about 62% black. I am not sure what happened between the current timeline and the future that exists in the Expanse, but the Baltimore they depicted looked a lot more like Minneapolis than 'Charm City'.

A couple notable takes I disagree with.
Amos: IMO the best, most complex character in the show. He wants to be "good" he just doesn't know how, so he adopts the morality of those he deems "good." First Naomi then Holden. His interactions with Prax changed his perspective of his own "goodness" and finally began to accept and follow his own moral compass.
Filip: Yeah, he bounces around, he's been mentally and emotionally abused beyond breaking. He's mentally unstable and given to quick shifts in his psyche. It's not bad writing or too fast character growth, he's just that fucked up.

Yea filip is also extremely young especially compared w the main cast when we first meet them. They’re all way into their 30s by the time season 1 starts and I wanna say filip is like 18 when we meet him. I mean shit Naomi’s whole arc depends on her being extremely unstable and naive at that same age and he is supposed to be a thematic mirror to her arc

I think that the 6th season would have been better if Alex was still in the cast. I believe that the show writers have shift characters and situations to fill in the gap. If Alex was still around, the other characters could have developed more and freer.

I disagree tbh, i think in a way it added to the message of the season about finding your way out of disperation and the broken state everyone is in. Avasarala lost her husband, her planet in a way and part of herself which she questions. Bobbies lost mars and her prevous identerty. Drummers lost her family, ashford and more. And nyomi has lost her son in a way, the roci crews loss was Alex, with out that happening i think it would have been harder to convey on screen.

As much as this was a shallow ending to the Expanse, your commentary showed a contempt towards seasons 5-6 and was not up to your usual standard.

Season 6 was just the ending of Season 5. When you trunkact a Season to mere 6 episode instead of the barely 10 to minimal 13' people forget that originally a Television was 26 episodes

The stance from which this essay originates is all based on character "change". I loved the last two seasons because it deepened these characters. But I disagree with the basis of your essay: alot was telegraphed much in advance. Holden becomes more political, Amos started mentoring and standing on his own when before he needed others to orient from, Aviserala's earlier ruthlessness reflected the exact ruthless calculus that led to Marcos and she understands that now. Even disagree about Marcos; he starts this from a desire to make things better for his son...but you utterly skip over that as a motivation.
I disagree so completely with your conclusions that it makes me want to do a counter video. Just to get this out. This utter wtf feeling. I guess then you did a good job with the video then...since normally I don't care enough. Great video then....misguided but enough to provoke

his demise feeds Drummer’s development well, not exploitatively IMO; he served as a strong foil against both Marco and Drummer as neither of them were comfortable with the kind of peace brokered with Inners after escaping the Ringspace and neither was Ashford himself UNTIL Marco’s radicalization revealed itself
