Love the film too and I agree with you 100%. JoBlo is so way off with the chemistry between characters section at 9:00 onwards, saying how Fat and Mira having no sex scenes is about how interracial relationships on screen back then weren't accepted and how them not having sex dates the movie. He is way off here. Chow Yun Fat's character has a family and all he is thinking about is saving them. He also shares his story with Mira Sorvino's character and the last thing they would be thinking about is f%*%ing each other, add the fact that they're constantly on the run from getting killed. Just because two actors are good looking, should they f*$K? Also Wesley Snipes sleeps with a white woman in the movie One Night Stand from the same year as Murder at 1600 (1997) a year before The Replacement Killers was released and he also sleeps with Jennifer Lopez is 1995's Money Train so that destroy's JoBlo's whole prohibited interracial sex on screen insight. However, I am still glad he covered this great underrated action film and more people need to see it! Great score by Harry Gregson-Williams too!

I worked on Replacement Killers. First I want to say, Chow Yun Fat is one of the only two actors who after their last shot went around to everyone present, thanking them and shaking their hand, in my 30 year career. The other actor was Ed Asner. One thing that struck me about Replacement Killers was it seemed that they were going out of their way to use the same locations as the original Blade Runner, which I also worked on. That was principally in Downtown Los Angeles, around the intersection of 3rd and Broadway, with some scenes in alleys between Broadway and Spring. As nice of a guy as Chow Yun Fat is, he wasn’t a good stunt driver, as demostrated at the getaway from the car wash - on 7th Street Skidrow - where he took out the light signal box before speeding away...

I LOVED The Replacement Killers, I took the no love interest between Mira's and Chow's characters as John being a professional Hitman and knowing that He must now look over his shoulder because he went against an Asian Mob boss because of his conscience made him realize that it basically meant that a LOT of people would be coming after him and he couldn't afford to be romantically involved (even IF his partner was able to handle herself, but that too is ALSO a cliche in movies like this where a male and female protagonist "have to" develop feelings for, and fall in love with one another) Especially with the knowledge that his mother and sister were targeted. So he made a VERY disciplined decision to focus on protecting them rather than having a romance. But you COULD tell that there was some chemistry between them.

But a quick correction: Sorvino doesn't speak Cantonese (9:41), she speaks Mandarin and Chow Yun Fat spoke only Cantonese (back then anyway; he struggled but may have learned Mandarin with "Crouching Tiger..."). All the Hong Kong "Heroic Bloodshed" movies by John Woo and Ringo Lam,of course.
Even Tarantino has ripped them off eh... I mean "got inspiration from them".
No seriously,Tarantino ripped off entire scenes (including camera angles and even dialogue) from "City on Fire" by Ringo Lam,starring Chow Yun-fat for "Reservoir Dogs" and acted like he never heard of the movie.
At least, the John Wick creators are acknowledging all the asian movies, they take ideas from, like for example the motorbike scene in part 3,that´s straight out of the korean movie "The Villainess".

  • @TRUTHISABSOLUTE777
    @TRUTHISABSOLUTE777 Рік тому +2

Your review of this movie was great except for one thing I have to take issue with. There's no way that I can agree that the lack of a romance between Chows character and Mira Sorvino's character is a detriment. Just because Mira Sorvino is attractive it is pretty short-sighted and superficial to expect his character to have sex with Sorvino's character. The restraint between the two actually makes the characters bond much better. Their restraint makes the relationship even more special and you can sense that at the end of the film. That restraint is what leaves you hoping at the end that Chow can make it back to his family and keep them safe and that sorvino's character can find love. Remember, this movie is not about chasing ones selfish desires but rather giving up oneself for a greater good. It's about sacrifice. To expect the characters of chow and sorvina to hook up just to fill some kind of interracial relationship quota or happen out of pure physical attraction limits what this movie is all about.

      David:
Chow also did another decent Hollywood crime flick called The Corruptor (1999) in which he co-stars with Mark Walburg----he plays a burnt-out detective on the case of a missing girl. His English has improved by then, but that's another Hollywood flick he did that barely gets much mention, either. That might be worth a review too. It does seem like Hollywood, unfortunately, didn't really know what to do with him at the time----which explain why he never had the full-time Hollywood career that he should have had. He still gets mad love in HK, though. Let The Bullets Fly is like a really good and funny Chinese Western spoof in which he plays the bad guy----that's worth checking out, too.

Well....most Asian men are depicted as Villains in Western movies.
If they are not depicted as evil, then they will surely die for the Western characters to keep moving.
I don't know what happened in Hollyweed, but clearly Hollyweed has been poisoned

I saw this film when it was released. View Yun Fat and Mira Sorvino had such fantastic chemistry and their partnership in the film was simply astounding. That's what made this movie far above most every directors first film.
The music choices were superb. The opening sequence set the tone so well for the entire movie. It was so memorable that I described it to coworkers until the movie was released onto hone media. At that point, we'd play that opening sequence in the office on our computers. It was that incredible. We all just loved it. I lived it so much that I went out and bought Chow's sunglasses! LOL!
Honestly, this is a wonderful action film. Every aspect of it was so well done, it's perfection, simply perfection.
I swear, Chad Stahelski must have studied this film, at least a little when creating the John Wick film series.

I was very disappointed when Chow Yun-fat's career didn't take off in America the way it should have. The man had terrific charisma and screen presence. He could do drama, action, and comedy with equal adeptness. I'd compare him to Cary Grant as having it all. His career has been great, but I really thought he would be huge in the US as well. Come bad casting and a failure on the part of US producers to recognize his potential are no doubt to blame.

At 15:28 funny you should mention Leslie Cheung (as in "archer" rather than "chapter"): he started out as a singer and was the first runner-up in a major singing competition in Hong Kong, then started a successful recording career, along with an acting career, mostly on television. He did make some very good movies such as "Farewell my Concubine", the best known one released internationally. Even after his death by his own hand he still enjoys an enthusiastic following.

Saw it at the time-the editing was really good, his lack of martial arts credentials-speaking as a martial artist-didn't detract from the film. I liked it.

@Kurapika Giovanna The Blade films are not martial arts films. The Bourne films are not. The John Wick films are not. They are action films. All of them have martial arts. One-the first, in case you don't know-has a qualified martial artist as lead character..

Chow Yun Fat needs a big U.S. film comeback after *ahem* Dragon Ball Evolution. Been a huge fan of him since A better Tomorrow which defined Hong Kong cinema. A sad case for his recent films, which you alluded to, was that most blockbuster Mainland Chinese films are all flare but severely lacking in... soul.

I saw this movie in the theater when it came out because three to four years before it came out, when staying up late on a Saturday night
at around 1:00 am our local Fox affiliate showed Hard Boiled on TV.
Every Saturday night to Early sunday morning our fox affiliate would show martial art movies, it's how i got into Chow Yun-Fat, Jet Li, and Donnie Yen movies.
For the longest time Chow Yun-fat was known as box office poison in Hong Kong until he worked with John Woo.

Big fans of Chow, Sorvino, Kennith and had the poster too. But lets be honest, it was a very ordinary movie that tried to mold the action genres of HK and Hollywood equally together, almost forced and despite being pretty balanced its not what people wanted so for people like myself (2nd gen Chinese) although lovely to see a multi racial cast made very little impact. You either go full HK style (Hard boiled, A better tomorrow, Casino raiders, Young and Dangerous, etc) or go full Hollywood style (Rush hour, Die hard, Terminator, point break, face off, etc) Thats why directors like John Woo will be remembered, the guy was a freaking genius. He successfully transitioned from HK to Hollywood (and back) which apart from Face off he did Broken arrow, mission impossible 2 among others. Woo was already in Hollywood at the time, I honestly think that he would have made a far better movie with the plot, budget and quality of actors to work with that Antoine Fuqua had.
This was also Fuqua's directorial debut so much can be forgiven, he went on to direct many good films.
Loved your montage to Chow btw, its great to see other HK actors get the recognition they deserve.

John didn’t have a kid. AFAIK, his family back in China was his mother and sister. He never spoke of any other family other than his father (who was already dead). He only wanted passports for his mom and sister. If he had a wife and kid, then he would have wanted to get them out of China too.

From what I read on IMDB, in the trivia, they originally were supposed to have a romance but all the scenes got cut because interracial relationships was not popular back then.
