Give the man a gun he's Superman, give him two and he's God.
Such an awesome line.
Damn. Beat me to it. Much love for this quote though.
@@JoBloOriginals q
The Taiwanese version of this movie was called 鎗神 "Gun-God" (direct translation to English)
CHow yun fat vs. Dr. Manhattan
"Never Saw?" nah man not only I have seen it about a million times but I remember also fighting one of my best friends for the last copy of the DVD of it we randomly found at a supermarket. Good times
Wow you love movies 😂😂
I hope you won and yelled E C Fucking W as you koed him and took the film lol.
When I returned Hard Boiled to the Video Store, I joked "It was a bit slow. Do you have any movies with more action then this?"
The store employee laughed for almost 5 minutes ,
Amazing
You should tried Howards End lol
Chow Yun fat has taken himself out of the lime light and placed himself firmly in the philanthropist standpoint. He actively loves taking pictures with old fans, but he reprioritized his life in the most positive of ways. Mad respect for the man.
I would flip out if I met him.
When these films came out in America, it was like finding the Holy Grail of action films. I have never seen anything like it before - A Better Tomorrow, The Killer, and Hard Boiled. I became obsessed with John Woo films in the 90s.
I was lucky enough to see this in what was probably its first theatrical run in the US - an arthouse theater in NYC, circa 1992-93 (forgot which)
Haha John Wick 4 drone shot the dragons breath shoot out just bested HB 1st person view shooting corridors demm
@szewei85 So, i went to go look at the scene, expecting a drone following John Wick around at ground level and....
Nope. Top down slow drone tracking, no practical effects, an abundance of special fx, and only 1 minute 47 seconds before a cut. Doesn't even touch the hospital scene lol.
A masterpiece from start to finish. Even a baby gets to help Chow Yun-fat. I would recommend Tiger on the Beat, you get a fun chainsaw fight towards the end.
Adding more credence to the expression "Don't piss down my leg and tell me it's raining."
You sure saved my day there you little pisspot!
And this movie inspired Shoot Em Up.
@@JnEricsonx Indeed, they gave Bugs Bunny a gun.
@@jwnj9716 haha yesh
Love them HK Woo flicks!
It just crossed my mind that Stallone should've invited both Chow Yun Fat and John Woo into the Expendables series. One to team up with the other action stars, the other to direct.
I've seen this like 6 times. When Hard Target came out, and then Face Off became a massive hit, I made it a point to see Woo's Hong Kong Films, and when I saw Hard Boiled, I really got into Hong Kong Action Films.
Nobody makes action better the way they make it in Hong Kong. That is a fact.
Hard target is great. Apparently there's an extended cut of the film somewhere that flushes out alot've the plot.
@@CyborgSodaCollects have the extended version o LaserDisc. I have not watched for a while, but recall liking it better than the theatrical.
@@chuckminskoff6071 gotta track that version down!
@@chuckminskoff6071 all I remember is more body count, more violence and an implied sex scene. Which means it's brilliant of course.
Ah, Hard Boiled! A true hyper stylized action film by the great John Woo. It still amazes me the amount of chaos that happens to the environments during the shootouts, especially when you consider it was made for only a few million dollars. Thanks to Woo, we also got excellent games such as Max Payne, Fear, and Black.
No love for Stranglehold?
@@moviemetalhead Right, forgot about that one. Also an underrated classic
have to say the slomo shotgun blasts are some of the most freakin' insane ever put to film. it freakin' vaporise half of the furnitures in the room with each shot.
absolutly fuckin' glorious
This film really blew me away----in the best sense of the word, I mean----when I first saw it. I was like, Wtf is going on here? The amount of gunfire and shootout in it were insane, to tell you the truth, and it was truly over the top in a way you would have never seen in Hollywood movies at the time. It's definitely fun as hell to watch and really insane, too.
I still play Stranglehold
The long one-take shoot out scene at the hospital is absolutely a masterpiece in choreography, execution and directing. Hard Boiled never gets old.
Best part about Hard Boiled, no CGI. And that’s what is great about Woo, is that his films are 99% practical. There were some CGI in MI2, but that’s pretty much it.
Bro I don't see why so many ppl are bothered by CGI. In the end the effects are still fake and CGI artist work much harder than practical ones. CGI like in movies like avatar totally destroy practical effects
@@mania4270No, because the CGI in some movies just can't have the same impact to action movies. Good CGI is used when needed. And admittedly is necessary for the story in Avatar, but in a lot of modern action movies it takes you out of the experience. That's why a lot of older action films still hold. Up better, the impact of the explosions and the way the action is shot is far more engrossing.
@@iancollazo7715 it depends. Comic book movies like avengers need to use CGI for their scenes because it would be impossible to do them in practical. Movies like fast and furious, mission impossible, and john wick all use PRACTICAL effects. So idk what action movies that are coming out that overuse CGI. Can you possibly name them?
@@mania4270 there's nothing wrong with CGI, when done well. But too many directors rely on it way too much. Including in tv. And there is certain films you expect to have it. Comic book movies are the exception. But if you watch the first Blade, most of the CGI was towards the final boss fight. Today's action movies rely on the green screen. Take a look at Extraction 2 behind the scenes. Most of it was practical or on site until they got to the train scene. That's pretty much 50/50.
My dad showed me this movie when I was a kid and I instantly loved it. I still watch it at least twice a year. The camera work and the soundtrack make the action scenes some of the best ever put to film.
Teaching Hong Kong New Wave, I loved diving deep into 'heroic bloodshed' with this film and 'The Killer' at the heart of the study. It's amazing it was so long ago. Thanks for bringing back the memories, time for a revisit! Oh and to break out 'Stranglehold'!
Yeah!
Anthony Wong who plays the villain in this might just be the best character actor in Asian cinema with the most prolific and versatile filmography you'll ever come across.
he is in every good hk movie ive watched.
@@dpyxl lol. I get that impression too. He's just so prolific and versatile.
@tchannel you mean tall and less handsome Tony Leung lol. He he's very prolific. Hell most HK actors have an average of 100 movies in their filmographies like Wu Ma, Andy Lau, Lau Ching Wan and Sam Luet but good old Anthony Wong appeared in 200+ titles! That's simply insane. The only one who comes close or even surpasses him I believe is Simon Yam.
Edit: sorry I confused the two Tony Leungs lol. You meant short handsome Tony Leung and I just thought of the other one because I know he was in A LOT of movies. Short Handsome Tony Leung was barely in 100 movies and he's like a superstar not exactly a character actor like Wong. Same applies for Chow Yun Fat, he's a mega star and a leading man, not a character actor.
And I miss the part where Fat or Leung played a cannibalistic rapist maniac twice! Or whatever the fuck he played in Heroic Trio among many.
@tchannel I edited my previous comment because I thought you were referring to Tony Leung Ka Fai.
I agree with you about Tony Leung and Chow Yun Fat having better careers quality wise at least but they are a different breed than those I mentioned with the exception of Andy Lau. They are leading men and in thr case of Chow he is a mega star. However I was talking about character actors who don't mind being supporting actors in the other guys' films.
Although both Wong and Yam had their lead roles here and there.
@tchannel I head it's a superhero movie. That's too bad but I hope they don't waste him.
Is Chow Yun Fat okay though? I saw his new movies like The Gutenberg Project and he looked very thin, you know what I mean.
Out of the hundreds, if not thousands, of action movies I’ve seen in my life ‘Hard Boiled’ doesn’t rank amongst the best, it is _the_ best. I just can’t think of another (pre-CGI) film that comes even remotely close to matching the sheer explosive spectacle this film delivers.
It’s audacious, it’s outrageous, it’s...incredible. A truly peerless technical achievement!
Definitely in the top lists for Greatest action films of all time..
John Woo is a legend! Hard Boiled and The Killer is still two of my favorite action movies of all time.
One of my favorite movies. I've introduced so many people to it.
I took my nephew and his friend to a midnight showing of Hard-Boiled here in L.A. right before Covid and they were totally blown away by it, still talking about it the next day. John Woo has some new fans
As soon as it came to vhs in the west I rushed to buy it. Still one of the best action movies of any decade. Awesome and insane.
This is 1 of the best action movies I have ever seen, alongside another John Woo/Chow Yun Fat film, The Killer. All the action is some of the best I have ever seen from the opening restaurant scene, the warehouse, the boat, and the climax at the hospital
This just blows away all USA Action films
One of the Best Action movies ever. Period
HK John woo is the shit! Hardboiled is a fucking classic.
I wish Woo still made movies like this today. The dual wielding, heroic bloodshed action needs to come back. I enjoy modern action movies, like John Wick, but it's just not the same kind of ultra mayhem, that Woo delivered back in the late 80:s/early 90:s.
Seek some Johnnie To films. He's the only one who's still making those kind of films.
The guy who made SPL 2 is also good but he sold out to the mainland chinese cgi crapfests like most of his peers but he did a movie called Accident produced by Milkyway that is worth checking out.
Dante Lam also made a couple of great military action movies if you're into that kind of stuff. Also Herman Yau made a couple of decent films lately with Shock Wave and its sequel being the standout.
@@tylerdordon99 Thanks, I'll check them out :) Yeah, I can't stand those mainland movies, with their terrible greenscreen "stunts" and "Asylum" level CGI. But not surprising really, since they love that crap over there...
@@Svante they still manage to make make a few good ones here and there if you know who to follow. But the old HK stuff is dead and gone imo.
it just occurred to me that Tony Leung's undercover cop in this movie could very well be the same one we see in Infernal Affairs, all we get told of him in Infernal Affairs is that he's been undercover for many years. Ignoring the fact Anthony Wong appears in Infernal Affairs as the police chief (maybe they were twin brothers), this is my official headcanon now
The first VHS tape of this movie that I got my hands on in the late 90s read: „Probably the most violent gun-crazy action flick you will ever see!“
This quote holds true to this day.
Looking at modern action flicks it‘s highly likely that this won‘t change anytime soon.
Gareth Evans could pull it off, though! Crossing my fingers!
Hard Boiled is still one of my all time favorites. So damn good! Seen it at least 3 dozen times, it just doesn’t get old.
I have seen it about 20 times!!a action masterpiece💞
I have seen this film for first time on last month. And man, I didn't expect this film to thrill me. And to be honest, I have never enjoyed this much for an old action movie since years. One of the best action films out there.
This movie is phenomenal. And a movie I haven't seen in a while, so thank you for not stealing another idea from my Amazon Prime viewing history.
Hard Boiled not only shifted the landscape of action films, but videogames as well. Max Payne was a hugely influential 3rd person shooter in and of itself and one of its deepest influences were the films of John Woo, especially Hard Boiled.
The PlayStation 3 collectors edition of Stranglehold which is basically a sequel to this movie in video game form has the original Hard Boiled on it. I remember putting that on after beating the game as something to go to sleep watching and I loved the movie so much it was morning and I hadn't gone to bed. Those three action scenes are absolutely amazing.
I love Tony's character Alan. There is a scene where Alan has to shoot his former triad boss but he is hesitant and the expression Tony gives is excellent it shows his dilemma, anger and frustration but no way he had to shoot and kill his former boss. There are many scenes we can see this character falls in between being an undercover cop and gangster and his emotion is well captured.
I have seen all these you've never saw things but I love the series! Keep em comming.
I wonder if anyone here saws the Chow Yun Fat movie "Let the Bullets Fly". Great period piece imo with a pretty interesting story line.
A Better Tomorrow II was my first introduction to Hong Kong cinema & it will always be my fav. But The Killer is something really special.
Ditto!
10:47-12:40 I just love when you guys did this, now I have more movies to watch!
Seeing this over and over again bliss hallelujah
One of the best action films ever made… can’t get enough of them two-fisted pistols, akimbo
Chow Yun Fat reminds me of Cary Grant in the way he carries himself.
I own this and killer on bluray.
The ps3 game by midway I think was a sequel basically to the movie. It was a really really good game (stranglehold)
The damm checkpoints but lmao
@@CliveWarren69 yea near the end the check point saved as I was basically dieing. But the mechanics were awesome. Hadn't had anything like it since maxpayne. So it was nice..
Really wish midway didn't go under they had some epic franchises
I wish I still had Stranglehold
@@dominiquejones3805 I wish midway games didn't go under. They were onto something with blitz and that game.
If you get a ps5 u can find the ps3 veriosn for cheap it may work. Or steam for pc may have it
LOVE THIS MOVIE! I flip back & forth between this and The Killer as my favorite Woo movie.
These JoBlo recommendations have been keeping me sane over lockdown. Great video as usual, presenter really knows his stuff and I'm enjoying the Canadian tidbits 🤘
Haha - long live First Choice/The Movie Network!
I remember buying a John Woo double feature tape set as a Christmas gift for my brother who loved "The Killer". Out of boredom I decided to watch "Hard Boiled" one New Year's Eve day. It's now one of my all-time favorite movies.
One of the Greatest films ever made. The amount of effort put in that one shot action scene was just brilliant
Nope saw it. It's awesome. Actually went to Borders bookstore and overpaid for the DVD. Paid like $28 for it. Totally worth it.
I have Hard Boiled and The Killer as a double DVD combo……best movies ever!
me too with A Better Tomorrow double with the sequel wouldn't bother with the third no Chow Yun Fat no Party
2:54. The exchanging of weapons by enimies also occurs in the series finale of the anime class, Cowboy Bebop.
Knowing how much that show was inspired by pop culture I can easily see the creators taking this sequence as direct inspiration
Holy Cow, Chris! This is actually THE FIRST ONE OF THESE I HAVENT SEEN!
Oh I've seen it. Many times, going back many years. It rules!!!
I still need to watch this. Thanks for the review.
One of my all time favorites. ❤️
Brilliant analysis
awesome movie. still watch it to this day.
I've heard all about those HK movies he made, but you just sold me. I always wanted to see Hard Boiled and a few others.
one of my favorite movies of all time!
I remember when I was back in college I haven't sleep for 2 days, then I watched this movie and it was like a rush of blood to the head it was Amazing, the dazzling action sequencies, the slow mo, the mexican stand offs this is a true John Woo movie classic!
Hands down one of the all time best action flicks!
Haha i used to China town to get vcd too lol 😂 such a great time. Thank you for another great video
I think I also saw it on First Choice when I was growing up and the action blew my 14-year-old mind. I just rewatched it again in April (you know, for Easter...) and it seems to me like this was John Woo's version of a Joel Silver produced 80s action movie. Especially Tequila's jump out of the exploding hospital
my favorite action movie of ALL TIME! Yes I love the John Wick movies and other modern action flicks, but this one is still my #1
It would be hilarious if Tequila made an appearance in John Wick 4 and Wick sits next to him in a bar and goes: "Inspector. I thought you were still in Hong Kong." And tequila goes "I'm on vacation." And then there's a shootout of them vs the assassins
Totally forgot about these movies - some of the best ever!
The action in hard boiled has yet to be surpassed
I love watching these Asian Action flicks from the 80's & 90's.
I realized that I'm just going to have to start collecting this films. Because I do have some Asian action flicks on my collection, but film like these can be rare to find on the shelves.
Need to nose dive online or literally go to those local video/ music store that at times I was able find some pretty good foreign film on DVD at least.
Damn such a classic, it was 1 of 4 VHS I use to keep in my car to show people back in the 90's. The other ones, Akira, evil dead 2 & Clockwork Orange.
John Woo's 80's/90's Hong Kong movies are the absolute pinnacle of asian action cinema.
You can see their influence in things like The Matrix trilogy, John Wick, many Zack Snyder movies, Robert Rodriguez' ''Desperado" & ''Once Upon a Time in Mexico'', '' Shoot 'em Up'' with Clive Owen (another underrated action gem), the Max Payne videogames and lots of modern S.Korean action thrillers.
John Woo took the whole ''hyper-stylised action'' concept to the next level with his masterful cinematography, slow-motions shots and meticulously choreographed action set-pieces.
It's a shame, he hasn't done anything worth watching in a decade.
Arrow films need to get the rights to release a blu-ray of this.
YES!!
or 88 films.
or better yet have criterion re release it on 4k. since they just did that with citizen Kane.
One of my FAVOURITE movies of ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Agreed! Hard Boiled is a must watch!!
If you haven't seen this film...it's not your fault, but now you have no excuse.
This movie is a blast and stands tall alongside anything out presently.
I've seen almost every movie you mentioned. VCD's were my everyday high school lunch time experience.
This film is a masterpiece.
The tea house shootout was part of the inspiration for the bar shootout at the beginning of Desperado.
In the 80's got my friend to drive us 100 miles to the Bay Area to catch the Killer after reading the review of it in the San Fran Chronicle!
Hard Boiled, A Better Tomorrow, and The Killer are some of the best Hong Kong action/triad films out there. So iconic for me
Also Bullet in the Head was solid. I liked the fights and the friendship approach.
One of my favorites
As a Hong Kong local, Chow Yun-Fat is a rare actor loved by locals with different political views, also, he lives in quite a humble life, he takes public transport, he buys food in regular market and cook at home, he also go hiking alone and takes selfie with normal people. I mean regularly over a decade...
As you mention one of the movie, a better tomorrow, the Chinese names "hero style", that is what locals feels of Chow Yun-Fat.
@shadyback Here respect him as very good actor, but he rare associate with the press, let alone interaction with normal people. Chow Yun Fat's popularity is above any Hong Kong actors...
I used to binge watch this back then
This movie, Killer and Bullet In the Head, A Better Tomorrow have not been seen enough. Gun-Fu was a major thing for me growing up.
as long as there is one single actionfan who has not seen this there will never be too many videos telling people how ucking awesome this is
Thank you you did it! you made another video on Chow Yun Fat also this one was pending for a long time you should also consider making a full fledge review of John Woo's Bullet in the head 1990 its a truly underrated gem. The title The Best Movie You Never Saw very much fits that movie as not many people have sadly seen it you should also make a video on CYF in more detail because he is a really underrated actor and a great down to earth person too.
Badass movie! That help change action films in particular shoot me up/gun fu genre.
I've never seen any of these movies, but after this video I WILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best!!
i met chow yun fat and his family at a amusement park in germany more than a decade ago, he couldn't beleive i recognized him as he's pretty much unknown in europe.
super humble and nice guy, it's a crying shame he didn't get the career he deserved in hellyweird.
@tchannel holidays i guess, he was in the cue to get into Fantasia Land, it's a park in germany about 200km from belgium.
and yes i got a picture but a real one, i'd need to dig up to find it.
Actually Hard Boiled is still available in UA-cam for anyone that want to see it, you just need to search for it.
I got the ps3 sequel game for Hard Boiled and a copy of Hard Boiled came with it I fell in loooove.
I seen hard boiled many times and it’s a classic action movie 🎥 this movie deserves to be release on streaming and digital hd.
Just saw it for the first time!!! WOWOWOWOWOW
Back in the very early 90s I had this on VHS and also wanted to show it to everyone I knew. I watched it 17 times in one week at one point. For years I had designs on shooting a movie this frenetic in first person perspective, something that was eventually done by Ilya Naishuller to a very high standard in Hardcore Henry. Gotta watch Hard Boiled with the orginal audio and subs for the full effect. The various dubbed versions really take away from the movie's impact.
I saw the movie a lot of times you liar! Thanks for the video, i love you
Best movie I HAVE SEEN
JOHN WOO in a recent interview said him and Chow Yun Fat are still very good friends and have been talking about a specific project that they would like to work on together. He didn't give any names, but that's good news.
Love all the gun Foo movies. Especially Replacement killers .
One of my favs of all time. I have 5 different copies of this film. Joblo please do John Woos A Better Tomorrow!
Love your vids bro🔥👍
I really agree this is there best movie that they did together. This was my first introduction to both Chow Yun-Fat and John Woo with The Killer being my second.
straight up one of my top 10 best movies of all time
Seen this so many freaking times
