    43:55 for anyone confused and can't get the subdivide working properly after joining the eyes with the head, make sure that you press CTRL + A while you have the subdivide modifier SELECTED on the eye. You did it correctly if it gets removed from the modifier list. You can then safely join the eyes with the head.
    This took me a good half an hour to figure out....

    Well I'll type this again for anyone who lost the comment for the old copyright claimed video! If you struggled like I used to with poly-modeling organic models (Humans, animals, ect), and are having trouble keeping form AND making sure your topology made sense then try sculpting and retopo! The anime models don't need the detail from the sculpt but it helps bolster skills for other works if you decide to branch off and can help you get a feel for the topology flow! Shonzo has a great poly modeling method here, that I even used when beginning, thanks so much again Shonzo ^O^!

    • @seanchoy236
      @seanchoy236 2 роки тому +7

      Thanks for the tip, though one thing I always struggled with with poly modeling and by extension, retopology, is deciding how many vertices/polys to start the main loops with to then later fill in the gaps

    • @Angel-ky3rb
      @Angel-ky3rb 2 роки тому +4

      @@seanchoy236 I think you would definitely benefit with retopology as practice instead of just poly modeling as you already would have a form down and can just focus on how the topo looks! But I add as many loops as i need to get the shape I want, and when i need more, such as the transition from arms to hands, since the fingers need a bit more topo, I use tris splitting off from the quads to effectively double the number of verts I have to work with, this way the topology is dense only where I need it to be dense and keeps the poly count down! Sort of like the guilty gear models, if you look at their topology the mouth area is made of tris

    • @seanchoy236
      @seanchoy236 2 роки тому

      @@Angel-ky3rb the thing is though, is there a bare minimum to start off with? I did try starting with as many loops needed but it got way more dense than it needed to be when I got the shape.

    • @Angel-ky3rb
      @Angel-ky3rb 2 роки тому +3

      @@seanchoy236 Well...no! I wouldn’t say so! There are a lot of dense models out there and they work alright, but maybe simplify the shape you’re going for first!then you can see where its necessary to start adding tris/ doing some fancy topology work to work around how many you need for the shape, i often do this with the knuckles and feet! If it helps my loops for hands are always 8 faces around, and then i begin to add detail where needed with the previous method

    Exellent guide. As a tip from a beginner i suggest using the least amount of verts possible. If you start with too many then it quickly becomes extremely hard to connect things together in an orderly fashion, i had to start over and it was way better on my second try with less verts. If there's too little then it's easier to add them later.

Thank you for making this video and I don't speak for everyone but I just want to say that I think why it could be difficult to make a full tutorial on this is because this modeling process can be done in many different ways and methods and different methods will work for different people and modeling anime like this is based a lot on what you have learned and how you can make it look good and there could be good tips and tricks but there doesn't seem to be a universal method to this. Thank you and good luck on your blender journey everyone

    54:59 (Sorry for the paragraph[s], I just find this kind of stuff interesting!)
    It's mainly those who are really talented and can coast off of their talent for most of school. The kids who quit quickly either never were interested and realized that, or they expected to get some form of result by just trying. That's not to say that talented people don't ever work hard, it's that talented people often use their talent to get more free time instead of using that time working at a level that challenges them.
    My guess is that it feels like you have a bunch of momentum but it all gets stopped by what you think will just be something fairly small, kind of like hitting a corner in Mario Kart and suddenly being in last place. If they're told (or expect) that something will be extremely challenging for everyone, then they will likely persevere longer in whatever task it is.
    It's usually not dumb people that think they're smart, it's smart people that think they'll always coast through anything. I don't exactly blame them either, schools barely challenge the talented kids. That's why talented or gifted kids generally end up worse than the kids who had to work harder to succeed.
    I don't know if there are more or less smart people now than in previous years, but I know that there are a lot more average people that think they're gifted now. Though I guess it's more that you can see those people whining all over the globe on the internet as opposed to your local area.

    I’ve been trying to follow so many other blender tutorials but they just don’t work for me. This method, however, does. I’ve been trained in autocad programs so that’s what I have experience in, and modeling with vertices like you do instead of starting with a cube is almost exactly what you do in autocad programs like Inventor or Onshape. So happy I found this.

      A little bit late but hopefully it will help someone! To do exactly as shonzo is doing you must add any mesh in object mode, let's say a square (not a cube but it's the same), switch to edit mode and select all vertices with A, once they're selected, M (merge) and select 'at center', now you have only one vert in the center of the world, add the mirror modifier, shonzo sets it from left to right (-x to +x) but the default is +x to - x (model on the right side, mirror in the left), now whatever you extrude will be mirrored :)

    bro, great tutorial, but I can't see your modifier values because of the avatar that is on top of the modifier panel. sometimes you adjust some values on the modifier panel and it's not clear what's you change there.

    Shonzo, I need your help, or your commenters help, I tried to make this, but I couldn't smooth it, as I couldn't make my mesh look like yours, making the vertices and faces look round, for example, and even with only 1 subdivision, I really need help with that.

    Around 14:30, Shonzo is connecting the eyes to the center line of the face. When I try to match up the bridge of the nose to the image I'm using, the subdivision modifier requires me to move the vertices much further off the face just to get the curve of nose bridge right. The only way I know to avoid this involves adding additional vertices to the connection between the eye and nose bridge, although I'm a little worried about do that so early in the head modeling process. It might just be a quirk caused by the character reference I'm using but I noticed that Shonzo didn't have this issue at all, or at the very least it's to a much smaller degree. It's hard to tell for sure if he is using the subdivision modifier and what his settings are, since his avatar is blocking it. Has anyone else had a similar issue and know how to handle it?

      he explains it at 19:00 - 19:30. It's mirror, and subsurface at 1. You can actually deduce it because one square becomes 4 and not 9

    cause that would help me out tremedously. lol this is amazing either way though

    Must say, this topology is amazing and is 100% what I'm kinda after(Or so I think).
    Although I would've liked to have seen the full orthographic views of the model after you finished it in this video(although I guess somehow that'd make your work less profitable...?).

    Isn't it easier to model from a cube with subdivision? Just the idea of modeling and creating "vertices in the air" makes it very complex for me

    I have a problem-
    When I stroke the lips vertices, they stop being like... curve and start to be square type, like the lines doesn't have the subdivision modifier, I tried to recreate the same thing in a new project with a cube without faces and just vertices, when I subdivide the lines and move it works well, but when duplicate and try to connect two vertices it loses the subdivision modifier for some reason I don't know- oh and I can't stroke from the cubes vertices because it loses the curve as well...
    how did you do that?
