      They kill “nonpeople.”
      It’s a dangerous trope - dehumanizing “them” is the first step towards genocide.
      We can proudly celebrate the mass murderers because they didn’t kill “real people.”

      @@Justanotherconsumer i think he was too trapped in grief to really think about anything other than his own anger and need for revenge.
      Even if bucky is a monster in this situation bucky would need to be tried and arrested like the rebelling avengers were. His job was to capture bucky not kill him. He was on the side of the law, opposite steve rodgers.
      It was a good way to point out the duality of human nature tbh

    For me, the real importance of "Did you know?" is that it levels the field. Cap vs. Iron Man was never good vs. bad. It's not even right vs. wrong. It's pure vs. pragmatic...until, "Did you know?" Steve knowing the truth about what happened to Tony's parents and covering it up is far from pure. It is a betrayal of both Tony and Howard, as well as a betrayal of the bedrock principles that Steve himself espouses. It's also proof that Steve is willing to go along with what seems to be the more pragmatic route when it comes to something he values greatly.

      It has to be noted, that Caps "sometimes my team keeps secrets from me" line(or however it went) happened at the time of him already keeping THAT secret. 10/10, Steve.
      Also the film itself, and "Our hands are the safest"... Do I misinterpret it, or he deems himself above everyone else? Does he now keep the same view as Schmidt?

    1:10 Cpt Marvel's Stan Lee Cameo "Trust me true beliver."
    Not only is this a tribute to his appearance in Mallrats but now this is asking the audience to trust that Stan's memory, his Legacy, will live on and continue to grow in the heroes he created and the lessons and impact they have on our lives now more than ever. Stan has made me a true believer.
    To quote the man himself (and his cameo in Age of Ultron). "Excelsior"

      I prefer Spiderverse's tribute. When we see Stan Lee comforting Miles while the whole world is mourning Peter Parker's death.
      Meanwhile, in real life, he's comforting us about his own death.

    Gooooood this scene. The whole movie is just building on the trauma of both Tony and Steve building to this massive sense of betrayal causing a damn near psychological break, and as you mention the way Tony progresses from focused solely on Bucky to taking out his anger and grief on Steve specifically for keeping this from him is...oof.
    I WILL say I’m not sure about the point you make regarding superhero’s not killing. Heroes in the MCU actually kill QUITE often, to the point that I think the only characters in these movies with any conscious objections to murdering bad guys are Doctor Strange and Spidey.

    If I were to do a video essay, it would've been about this scene. I loved everything about it. One particular moment would be when Tony and Steve are watching the security footage. When Tony turns to Steve and you see the emotion on his face. His heart is absolutely broken, he's pissed off and all he sees is red. Then you see Steve's face, and he's almost in a panic. He's nervous because he knows he'll go after Bucky. I just appreciate the acting so much, props to Evans and RDJ. Also, the fact that the scene was mostly quiet, it just builds the tension.

    It's super interesting that you bring up that Cap thinks of himself as just Steve in this moment. I've always tried to articulate why exactly I love this too, but I think you really put the words in my mouth. Because in this moment, Iron Man and Cap aren't fighting as super heroes, they're fighting as people. People trying to protect and avenge those personal to them, which only adds to Cap dropping his shield at the end. Some spot on analysis here, good job!

    You got it just right. It's great how the fight went from Tony being mad at Bucky to Tony being mad at Steve for lying to him. Makes the fight much more realistic, relatable, and emotional. Civil War is a masterpiece. It handles the characters SO well. I did my One Marvelous Scene from there as well. Such a great film. I was honestly team Cap before I saw the film because... it's team Cap. But once I saw the film, I honestly started to believe that Tony had the better argument and the better reasons to fight. That's called properly subverting the audiences expectations right there. Anyway, this was great. Subbed, and keep up the good work!

    I think honestly the main reason why Tony was attacking both Bucky and Steve was because of how he learned the truth about the death of his parents. The fact that he had to watch it on a video monitor was bad enough, but the fact that he also had to find out that Steve knew this secret and kept it from him was even worse. And because of these two things, he was seeing red. If Steve told the truth, then things would’ve ended up much differently. Tony would’ve probably gone after Hydra instead of Bucky for revenge. In regards to some people siding with Tony, it’s very understandable in terms of what built up this fight. When it comes to the Sokovia Accords, I am for Steve’s opinion. In regards to this fight though, I wouldn’t say I was rooting for someone, but I will say that someone was more in the wrong. Tony was in the wrong because of him trying to kill Bucky and possibly kill Steve, but I feel like Steve was more in the wrong because he started this conflict by keeping the secret. That’s why I understand why some people side with Tony instead of Steve. But in terms of who was in the right kind of balances things out in this fight. Steve was in the right during this fight because he was trying to protect Bucky, and both of them were trying to stop Tony, not kill him. Tony was doing the opposite. So in conclusion, the built up to this fight had Tony in the right because he’s the victim, and Steve was in the wrong because he kept the secret, but the actual fight had Tony in the wrong because he was trying to kill Bucky and possibly Steve, and Steve was in the right because he was trying to protect Bucky and stop Tony

    Iron man was the antagonist? Captain America may have been right in the sense that Governments can rarely be trusted to make responsible decisions, disallowing allegedly necessary action or forcing ill-advised action, but he seemed to be under the impression that he can still just keep operating the way he always has been and the governments can just suck it, he didn't seem to have any plan for how to deal with their "this will no longer be tolerated". Continuing to act on his own actively made the situation worse. The first version of the Sokovia Accords were "this way we still have at least one hand on the wheel" and "don't worry, we can revise it later if needed". That was a good deal, which he almost accepted, but got cold feet when he learned Wanda was being kept on house arrest until the heat was off. Was that indicative of unsettling oppression? Understandable why he'd think it would, but at the same time "irresponsible to allow her to act on her own?", yes, and it was foolish of him to not factor that in.

    • @ZackWhat
      @ZackWhat  Рік тому

      It’s Cap’s film, so I said Iron Man was the antagonist. Which doesn’t necessarily mean “villain”. Also the Sokovia Accords might have been viewed as Slippery Slope to Cap. If they’re able to take our protection rights away, what happens then? (That’s a good What If episode right there) Plus Bucky was involved. I think it was more of a perfect storm than anything.

    it's been years and i still feel torn about civil war, though ultimately i count myself as iron man team because so much conflict could've been avoided if cap had just been more comunicative, and i do disagree with roping in goverment onto the superheroes but having some guidelines and protocols (that cap would agree may sometimes in extraordinary circumstances be overlooked) would improve logistics of chaos prevention and restoration to civil order, if at all for the citizens a little what to do guide for the next alien invasion, emergency exits and whatnot XD

    • @nickelcobalt98
      @nickelcobalt98 5 років тому +2

      im19ice3 Cap did try to communicate though. In the scene after Sam, Bucky and Steve are captured, Steve and Tony have a long conversation and ultimately you can see Cap start to understand where Tony is coming from when all of a sudden the whole atmosphere shifts because Tony has Wanda confined.
      I feel like in the end, Cap just wanted everyone together but after seeing how Tony would treat people not on his “team” just couldn’t sign the accords.
      But that’s just my opinion and I think both characters have completely understandable stances in the movie that it is hard to pick being “team iron man” or “team captain america”

    As for Freedom (cap) vs Security (tony) I think there are pluses and minuses to both sides. It's Cap's movie so we are meant to take his side, but imagine if it was Captain Russia and he wants to go do some superheroing inside America without the support of the US government. Would you be cool with that? What if it's Captain Iran, or Captain Iraq or Captain Saudi Arabia.
    I can only agree with Cap's position because he's Cap. If he were literally anyone else I'd be fully behind Tony in that superheros need some kind of oversight. If it were the real world I'd be terrified that Hulk can just Hulk out without consequence or a rich dude in a superpowered murder suit can just do whatever he likes because if it were some other country's murder suit we'd be totally against it.

      You mean the government that fired a nuclear missile at a populated New York City? Yeah, I'd like the Avengers to not answer to them, thanks. Cap was right, the Avengers aren't perfect and maybe they needed a solution to that, but signing the Accords was not the correct solution.

      @@StormyKopaAMVs I didn't say the accords were right, just that there is a good argument to be made in signing them. What if Captain America were Hydria like in that comic everyone hates?
      Or as I said, what if a country like China or North Korea makes their own superpower team and they decide to go into an EU country or the US to do some superheroing. The only reason why we side with Cap is because he's Cap. If he were literally anyone else he would be a villain.

    I've said it elsewhere, but it bears repeating. The Winter Soldier IS the Accords. In opposing the Accords, Cap defends them. By trying to kill Bucky, Iron Man betrays them.
    Earlier, Cap describes the Accords thus: "If we sign this, we surrender our right to choose. What if this panel sends us somewhere we don't think we should go? What if there's somewhere we need to go and they don't let us? We may not be perfect but the safest hands are still our own." Cap isn't just talking about the Accords. He's describing Bucky. The Winter Soldier has no right to choose. WS doesn't get to refuse missions. WS doesn't get to recommend deployments, volunteer for missions or even suggest alternatives. Hydra has stripped him of his volition. The Winter Soldier is nothing but an obedient tool. The purpose of the Accords is to turn the Avengers into exactly such a tool. Secretary Ross, who we are apparently supposed to trust as an honest, noble and virtuous overseer, only refers to Thor and Hulk as "weapons of mass destruction". And in the scene you cover, even Tony describes Wanda as one. In championing the Accords both Ross and Stark dehumanize all of the (other) Avengers, seeing them as nothing but tools for their use. Just like Hydra saw Bucky.
    Cap further points out that "This document just shifts the blame". And for Stark, that is it's intent. Stark feels guilty for the death of Charles Spencer, and to a lesser extent for the other collateral casualties caused by his own arrogance. He seeks to escape this guilt by foisting the responsibility off onto someone else - a governmental agency - so he doesn't have to accept the guilt for his own actions. With the Accords, Tony can just blame any unpleasant consequences on his UN superiors. And yet...
    When Tony discovers that Bucky killed his parents (after violating the Accords by ditching Ross' oversight thereby putting to the lie any pretense that Tony thinks himself to be in any way bound to accept anyone else's authority over him), he blames Bucky. Despite knowing, despite seeing with his own eyes during Bucky's escape, that Bucky has no control over his actions when in Winter Soldier mode, Tony blames Bucky for his parents' deaths. Despite seeing the footage showing Bucky as being clearly in Winter Soldier mode and therefore under Hydra's complete control, Tony holds Bucky responsible. Tony's response is blatantly hypocritical given his support for the Accords. Meanwhile...
    Cap champions taking personal responsibility for the consequences of his actions. Steve knows that, even when acting under orders, even when performing his sworn duties, he cannot escape responsibility for choosing to obey those orders, for choosing to accept those duties. The commands of authority cannot supersede moral obligations. Yet Cap does NOT hold Bucky responsible for his actions as The Winter Soldier because those moral obligations can only exist when one has the power to make moral choices. What Bucky did all those years, it wasn't him. He didn't have a choice. Hydra, and later Zemo, made those choices for him. Bucky was just left to live with the guilt.
    It's part of the genius of this movie that, in opposing the Accords, Cap defends their living embodiment while the primary champion of the Accords spends the movie hunting, and ultimately trying to kill, the avatar of the Accords.

    • @rmsgrey
      @rmsgrey 5 років тому

      On the other hand, Winter Soldier's actions are the embodiment of what's wrong with the Accords - a super-powered individual acting under the orders of a separate organisation. Cap defends Bucky as a victim of the same thinking as the accords. Stark is wanting Bucky to be held accountable, regardless of the fact someone else gave the orders.

    I'd suggest you missed a few things. Tony Stark isn't above killing, but either the writers are suffering from deciding he is an idiot for the time, or as I beleive, Tony is holding back, even when it comes to killing Bucky. He had the chance and the technology, and if it were a "to the death fight" then it's safe to say that Steve is outclassed. Steve wins precisely because Tony isn't willing to kill his friend, but he honestly believes that Steve is willing to kill him in those last moments.
    People often say that they love Steve because he never breaks his principles, but he does in this film. He breaks his principles to protect his friend Bucky, and that inner conflict shows through in the build up to the fight at the end.
    I'd argue that it's the inner conflict in both characters that make this fantastic.

    in my opinion the whole Tony - Bucky situation is one HUGE fuck up made by Cap. lemme explain. Imagine you have two friends, however they themselves aren't friends with each other (Tony and Bucky). These to guys start arguing and it starts getting really bad, fight is about to break out. now I believe it is your responsibility as a friend of both of them (Cap) to step in and prevent them from doing something stupid. What Cap did was basically "you both are my friends BUT FCK YOU TONY IM GONNA BEAT U UP EVEN THOUGH YOU JUST SAW THE MURDER OF YOUR PARENTS FOR THE FIRST DAMN TIME IN YOUR LIFE AND IT MUST HAVE HIT YOU LIKE A TRUCK" ... that is not what good friends do.

    Wtf are you talkin about tony killed a lot of people in the mcu. Everyone thinks all super heroes have the same code as Batman

    • @ZackWhat
      @ZackWhat  Рік тому

      Yeah but it’s more of a flippant rule for superheroes. I feel like the fact that he was getting involved with the Sokovia Accords meant he shouldn’t do anything like that. Plus this is the first time where Tony is actively trying to murder another person. Not just take them down, murder. And someone he knows.

    tony obviously isn't actually trying to kill bucky, he has missiles, he could fly back and annihilate cap and bucky, he's just overwhelmed by his emotions and reacting in a stereotypically masculine way: punching shit

    • @mikeg155
      @mikeg155 4 роки тому

      He’s most definitely wants Bucky dead. Tony tried to shoot him in the face with a tank missile at point blank range. Issue is he was *_so_* overwhelmed by emotions that he wanted to kill him up close and personal and ended up in melee combat.

    • @ZackWhat
      @ZackWhat  Рік тому

      I think he is trying to kill Bucky in the end. Throughout the movie I’d say he’s just trying to capture him, but when he learns that his parents were killed by Bucky, his emotions take over.

    So glad I finally got a chance to get to this! I love how you narrow down into the deep conflict between Cap and Iron Man. The insight that he's really Steve Rogers, not Captain America, is heavy stuff, and I loved it.
    I've got a video a ways down the list about Civil War's Moral Endgame that digs into the roots of the conflict between Tony and Steve. Check it out - maybe it'll spark something for you, I dunno. Anyway, subbed and looking forward to what's next!

    I loved the fight between captain America and iron man. Becuase in it its pretty apparent that iron man would have won the fight, but he didnt want to kill captain America, only bucky. If he wanted them both dead im 100% sure tony would have wipped the floor with them both of em and made a red paste of them in that cylo
