All I can say for this video, I hope that this makes up for lost time. Thanks, Nando v. Movies, Hitop Films, Marcus from Cosmonaut Variety Hour, and others for giving me the in I needed to come back, as I have some thoughts on a very special scene from Age of Ultron.

Hey old and new viewers alike, I'm here the day after the news broke regarding Joss Whedon and Charisma Carpenter. Truth be told, I was planning on talking about the whole situation with Ray Fisher and Justice League as well as Kai Cole in another video regarding the discussion of separating the art from the artist as well as just the broader subject of acknowledging the work of a bad person.
I've been stewing over this all day, trying to figure out what to do, because a large part of what I made this video on was me being a fan of Joss Whedon and all the research I did regarding his state of mind at this point in his career... but morally I don't know if what I discussed was even the truth. It was always conjecture... but I always prided myself in looking beyond the scene and into the artists behind the work. It's a large part of why this video is the way it was.
As a fan of Whedon, I'm incredibly heartbroken and disgusted (I even had videos on Firefly and Much Ado About Nothing I wanted to do, as well as another video comparing how Whedon and the Russos molded the Avengers on screen, but for now... it just feels wrong...). As a content creator and a filmmaker, I feel so conflicted, because I want my videos to have a sense of empathy for the people behind them, but in light of what's happened, it shakes me to my core.
So I decided to keep this video up, not only because it was such a huge video for me (and I'm not partnered anymore, so I'm not even making any money on this), but as an editor, I'm genuinely proud of this video and Whedon was not the only focus, but also the discussion of each writer and director taking to these characters like artists and writers on the comics they're based on. I WILL however be deleting a Joss Whedon video I had on my channel for years, because I don't want to celebrate a man who abused his power on and off set.
This is an emotional reaction, I'll admit, and some may not agree with me on this. But when you look up to someone and are influenced by someone like I was with Joss Whedon, you feel almost a sense of betrayal. And I don't want to condone that behavior at all, nor do I want him to taint my work.

Look Josh Whedon was/is one of those A-Hole boss that alot of people have and had from the stories from Ray and Charisma. It's not like he sexually harass them, assaulted them, being r_cist, or a sexist pig at/in the workplace (that we know of). A comparable example, Gordon Ramasy the dude is a total tough a-hole boss and yet people still eat his food, buy his cook books, and watch his shows. Be weary when ever someone starts off saying "My Truth" ... because there is only "The Truth" ... My Truth is just another way of saying *my:* version//lie/narrative.
@@knessing7681 If the stories about him making writers cry and bragging about it, or the stuff he said to Charisma, that goes beyond being an asshole boss to outright abuse. I've had asshole bosses, and as much as I didn't like their approach I knew there was a basic level of respect that meant I could put up with it. The shit Joss is accused of doesn't make him an asshole boss, it makes him a BAD boss. There is no way you're getting the best work from your writing team if you're making them cry every week, there is no way you are getting the best performance from your actors if they feel demeaned and belittled every time you talk to them. The fact that he couldn't be trusted to tone down his behavior with a teenage girl, to the point where he wasn't allowed to be alone with her without a buffer, is ludicrous and pathetic. A director's job is to direct people, a level of interpersonal communication skills and adaptability is integral.
Also worth noting that Charisma and Ray Fisher are being backed up by a lot of their co-stars and Joss's writing staff. At the absolute very least, this paints a clear picture of Joss overstepping appropriate boundaries and levels of respect for his workers. There is no excuse for that, if he meant it in good fun and was somehow dense enough to not realize he'd gone to far when someone broke down crying, then he needs to profusely apologize. I say this as someone with a pretty mean sense of humor. I can be brutal with my teasing, but I know how to tone it down if the person isn't comfortable and if I go too far you'd better believe I apologize and do everything I can to make sure the person is okay with how hard I push going forward. A director who can't do that is hamstringing their project for their own ego.
Gordon Ramsay plays up his persona for the camera, he is much less belligerent in the British versions of his shows. Even if he is an asshole when working in a kitchen, a high stress environment like a fine dining restaurant where seconds are the deciding factor between whether a dish turns out good, bad, or has to be restarted is very different from a television or movie set. Being a head chef warrants a level of strictness that is necessary for the restaurant to function, directing on a set where an entire day might be set aside for just one scene doesn't. In fact, it will often make the process even harder.
If your standard for how much abuse a boss or public figure is allowed to get away with is how successful their business is, you are contributing to the problem. That attitude is exactly why Weinstein was able to get away with his bullshit for as long as he did.

"When the Earth settles, God throws a stone." Sounds like an Infinity War foreshadowing to me.
Never even noticed, but in the start Tony does look to be settling down with Pepper because of his dreams of a child instead of more space nightmares, and later Thanos throws (part of the surface of) a moon at him. So many connections with these movies, it's crazy.

Well, this is just drama writing 101. Nobody wants to read about a character who lives ahappy quiet life. If you want your readers to be invested, start throwing stones at your character.
My favorite part about this scene is how it calls back to one of the earliest observations of Ultron:
“Everyone creates the thing they dread. Men of peace create engines of war. Invaders create Avengers. People create... smaller people? Er... children! I lost the word there. Children. Designed to supplant them. To help them... end.”
He spoke that with such lucidity... almost such that you would think he could avoid that fate himself... but no, instead, the lucidity of his words only expressed inevitability after all. Ultron’s “child” was Vision. He too created what he came to dread. He too created what he came to fear... That’s what Vision’s observation was a callback to... what that conversation as a whole calls back to...
“You’re afraid.” “Of you?” “Of death. You’re the last one.” “You were supposed to be the last.”
“Stark asked for a savior (got a monster, and then) settled for a slave.” “I suppose we are both disappointments.” “I suppose we are.”
There’s a beautiful symmetric duality to it all
But now I think Ultron will emerge back as white vision in wandavision!!!

How does it comment on the film?
The main problem with age of Ultron is excessive action scenes and thor's entire infinity stone side quest. They clutter the pacing and don't give the farmhouse scene or Black Widow's character arc room to breathe.
Lots of people complain about widow's dialogue in the farmhouse. And they're wrong. The scene is a man and a woman talking about their doomed relationship.
The man says "you shouldn't be with me. I'm a monster. I can't even have kids."
The woman responds with "Hang on asshole. I can't have kids either. Does that make me a monster?"
People who claim the farmhouse scene is sexist or ableist against sterile women aren't looking at it in the context of widow's backstory presented in the earlier flashbacks and her background work in the other farmhouse scenes. She's not a monster because she can't have kids. She's a monster because an evil organization took her and dozens of other little girls and turned them into monsters by stripping away their humanity piece by piece. And the very last piece of humanity they took was the ability to create life. Making it so they could only take life.
The main problem with age of Ultron is that it lacks the one flashback scene that would have tied Black Widow's entire arc together. The scene where she gets her humanity back the fifth or sixth time she visits the Barton Farm for dinner with her new family. The very first time Hawkeye's daughter says "I love you, Aunty Nat."
Hopefully the Black Widow movie will have a flashback to that, because then her MCU character arc would be truly complete.
I agree with pretty much everything, but I wanted to make a comment because of the irony in it: Thor's sidequest. One of the things that was most actively trying to be removed, as the cave scene was part of it, was the thing the studio wanted most. And it is the farmhouse scene that the studio would take out in retaliation. It was the most important scene of the entire franchise, a scene where everyone is shown as a human being instead of just a superhero (*cough cough* DCEU) would get removed because the studio wanted their exposition dump.
If the movie did lack the sidequest, then even the action scene numbers could become bearable. Breaking into Hydra's headquarters is a fight that we needed to see. The rise of Ultron and his problems with the Avengers was a fight that was going to go down, and from there, the only fight scene that really didn't progress the story was Hulk vs Hulkbuster. Which itself is the entire point. Demoralize the Avengers and waste their time for Ultron to get his own plans. That's also why the final fight has so many small, human moments in it as well. To make it more than just another fight scene against the big bad villain.

People forget that he was made by Tony AND Bruce, and not Hank. He doesn't just have Tony's snark, but the loneliness to me comes from Bruce. The idea that humanity have to be destroyed to stop them from causing pain and further destruction is VERY Bruce, it's what he has tried to do to the Hulk for years.

His original goal was ruling not feeding the ants, classic case of only listening to part of what was said. He even had a philosophical discussion with his guards about what makes a king a king. That was his arc. A good king puts the weak first and lives and rules for them, because they have potential to be strong in different ways. That's what his drive to end inequality was about. That's what Komugi, you know, the girl he loved and who his entire development was around taught him. The character so important that his personality REVERTS when he forgets about her? Christ man

No your explanation didn't address his contridition. His motive to stop inequality had a flash of images showing poor children and war in his head. How does your explanation of a conversation about being King give him the knowledge of the poor children and state of war around the world? He hardly left the castle how did he know this.
Endgame made Age of Ultron so much better in retrospect, but that's more of a nod to the Russo brothers and how spectacularly they work together and how detail oriented they are.
I never truly got why I loved Ultron so much, something about him made me adore him while everyone kept saying ‘it isn’t the cold machine he is!’ and he was snarky and sarcastic (what did we expect out of stark industries haha) but now, now I get it now I get why I liked him and why I would have liked too see more; Ultron is the a villain turning human.
We have so many cold analytical robots deciding humans are too chaotic to live or whatev and sure thats cool but here- here we have that same situation but with a small twist “What if it slowly started becoming human?” he humours himself, he slowly learns what frustration and loneliness is, fear, rage, confusion, is able to bond for a short second at ‘being a disappointment’ and slowly his ‘I have no strings’ gets better, a marionette trying to be a human and stop being just a marionette meanwhile we have ultron a machine that wishes to continue his program of ‘savior’ but slowly becomes human. I would have loved it if we got more of those moments to truly contrast the beginning monotonous and factual nature of his character to a more human, scared and reflective self, hell maybe a last small acknowledgement of ‘I’m truly the last me’ or heck a ‘and I am on my last string’ before ending (I AM JUST HAPPY I FINALLY GET WHY I LIKED HIM SO MUCH BUT COULDN’T PUT MY FINGER ON IT)

The analysis of the AoU scene was really good, but the speculation of Whedon’s struggles and the turmoil he endured during phase 2, how Age of Ultron reflected his emotions and how the creative teams passed the torch, was a truly excellent component of this video. Excellent video, keep up the great work.
Films are indeed reflections of the filmmakers' psyche at the time, ala diary entry set in different world. Immortalized frame of mind. Reminds me of what happened behind the scenes with Andrei Tarkovsky (The Mirror, The Stalker), David Lynch (Eraserhead) and many more.

I love the analogy between Whedon and the Russos and Ultron and The Vision
GABRIEL ORTEGA he was basically saying that Ultron in that instance was Whedon because he’d had control over a large part of the MCU for so long that he saw what happened when there was pushback from the studio to do anything and Whedon was cynical the same way Ultron was and the Russos are Vision because he’s an optimistic newcomer that hasn’t seen the worst of humanity (or pushback from the studio in this case) and is looking forward to nothing but the best.
As filmento basically said in his video on Age of Ultron and the avengers, the movie is a good movie, just not the one people were expecting with the marketing
I think I always liked the movie because I don’t remember seeing the marketing at all, I always loved that movie and was confused as to why people hated it, I feel like ultron left such a great mark on the mcu and our characters.

I remember feeling bad for Ultron here. He’s so smart but he’s inexperienced. He has no parents, he’s not learned anything about the individual, only the people as a whole. Vision saying “I was born yesterday” kinda put it into perspective. Ultron is a child doing what he thinks is right and getting it all wrong, like a 4 year old bringing breakfast in bed to his parents and spilling milk all over the bed. Ultron had never experienced humility or discipline of any kind until that moment, he had his programming and never got to experience reinforcement. Who knows, with a little modification or a push in the right direction, he could have done great things.
The old Psychiatric party lines of nature versus nurture. Another good movie that covers this topic is Trading Places (it's kind of old, but it's a good movie anyway).
Luckily in the multiverse of madness you get to see the good version of Ultron.

@@GabyGeorge1996 AoU has been one of my favorite MCU films since I saw it. Honestly, Ultron is such a compelling villain, I just don't get all the criticism. He's the perfect antithesis for the Avengers' optimism, and he has a strong personal connection to the heroes he is fighting. His voice and mannerisms are perfect, his dialogue is super well written. I have no idea why the film is reviled so much. It has some of the best scenes in MCU history - the afterparty, the farm, that base raid in the beginning, the scene that this video mentions, Hawkeye's pep talk... Honestly, the only thing I dislike about it is killing off Ultron, but even that doesn't feel definitive.
realar I agree with you, AoU was the second (IM 3 was my first, which is why it’s one of my favourite movies in the MCU) film I ever saw from the MCU so it will hold a place in my heart, it is extremely underrated
@@danielsilva9502 Though as he pointed out, the death of Ultron signifies a passing of the torch plus also a return to humble beginnings. Ultron ended just like he began, in shambles.
realar sure, for the film to have a satisfying conclusion, it should end this way, but I have a feeling Ultron will still find a way to rebirth himself, otherwise it wouldn't truly be Ultron.

Was high af when I watched first time had to rewatch this amazing movie and video great vid man. Me personally I felt that the conversation between Vision and Ultron was overlooked. The way Ultron talked to Vision made it seem as if he summed up the MCU as a whole. It was different and I liked it.

In all technicality, Age of Ultron onwards especially in Infinity War and Endgame is the age of ultron.
He pretty much caused The Avengers to be divided. And thus they lost in Infinity War.

@@justarandompeep8945 I didn't like the villain, I thought his reason for hating Tony was ridiculous and so was the origin story of him being a nerd, I felt Rebecca Hall's character was wasted, I think the fake out with the mandarin was misguided and they ruined a villain for a cheap joke. Overall I just didn't feel Shane Black's direction was a good fit with Iron man

_The Avengers_ was a simple formula that became greater than the sum of its parts working in near-perfect tandem.
_Age of Ultron_ was a complex beast with more depth to offer, but studio intervention saw to it that it chugged along far less gracefully than its predecessor. Its parts were greater than the sum of its whole but still it finds footing in its small, quiet moments.

Joss Whedon knew that he put too much stupid jokes in the first movie so he dialed it back a bit. I consider the Avengers movies the only franchise where each sequel is better than the last one.

I just love Ultron in the books, so skipping out on Hankpym, Tony Stark creating him.. giving Ultron a stupid mouth and being cynical was out of character.

I consider Phase 3 the "Age of Ultron". Consider the marketing for the movie "A New Age Begins".
That and the consequences of Age of Ultron are still being felt, even till the end
personally I think phases 1 and 2 were the "Age of Ultron" and phase 3 was the "Age of Vision."

He would need to have a very strong relationship to Pym, and for that, Pym would have to be a more active part of the MCU, and I'm not sure they'd be up to that.
Vision was essentially ultron 2.0
Pym isn't narcissistic and hungry for control to ever want an Ultron 2.0. if we saw that scene it would automatically set Pym up to be a rogue bad guy.

I don't know what possessed me to click on a 20min video that I would usually never even glance at on average day, from a youtuber I have never heard of before. But I am sooo happy I did. This video was beyond amazing and I hope you never stop doing what you do.
I think it would’ve been more impactful if Ultron wanted to see the sun one more time before he dies, he is afraid for the first time in his life, so seeing the sun while his life ends would bring him some perspective on how he could’ve used his powers for good.
So, Whedon went through all that crap, just for WB to do him and Snyder dirty. Must have felt nice smh

your essay shines a completely new light on Ultron and Joss Whedon for me. Out of all the MCU films, AoU was the only one I wrote off as "one and done" (viewing-wise). Upon it's release, I couldn't believe the same guy that did the Buffy show made Avengers 2. I will re-visit it w/the commentary, and of course, the understanding of info fr your essay. Good stuff!
I'm happy to have inspired you with wanting to revisit it, even with the commentary! I will warn you though, I think another way this kinda adds to Joss being broken by this film, you gotta compare this commentary with the first films commentary. In that one, he's full of life, loved everything and everyone, and was even cracking jokes. This one, he was so business and depression, it really breaks the heart, you could hear it in his voice. Just something to keep in mind if you're going to listen to it with the commentary. And with this film in particular, be sure to check out the deleted scenes. There was a lot more to Natasha and Bruce that justifies her later actions in the film.
3:06 my one marvelous scene will always be where it all began, the one scene that got my entire _generation_ to cheer in theatres, from "That's my secret captain", to the iconic panorama shot. The Chitari hordes screech, and the Hulk ROARS back! Like...
That's it. That's the greatest scene in my opinion.
AoU is truly under appreciated in the grand scheme of the franchise and holds a really special place in my heart. I was so glad to see Endgame hit a few pay offs from what Whedon established.
This scene in particular has always stood out as just being so damned perfect and having so much to say in such a short time.

I loved Age of Ultron, especially with James Spaders' voice work. I just wish they'd gone a bit bigger with it, and really made it an Age, showing how it changed the world, and the effects on society. I guess Civil War did that a bit, but...
@@SinewmireThe "Age" aspect is felt a lot in the MCU tv shows set after Ultron, especially Agents of Shield. They reference the Sokovia accords on multiple occasions, and even have a whole half a season (about 15 episodes) dedicated to an "Ultron 2" type scenario.

Perhaps my favourite single scene in the MCU. The dialogue is sublime.
Films are indeed reflections of the filmmakers' psyche at the time, ala diary entry set in different world. Immortalized frame of mind. Reminds me of Andrei Tarkovsky (The Mirror, The Stalker), David Lynch (Eraserhead) and many more.
It's really something I try to keep in mind with my videos and even if I can my reviews. I think you'll appreciate the next video I'm uploading on Saturday.

EDGAR WRIGHT WAS GONNA DIRECT ANT-MAN???
Mmmhmm! He had written the script with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block, The Kid Who Would Be King) and was in development since 2007. It was supposed to be a part of phase 1, but Wright wanted to do Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. When he finished the latter, The Avengers came on, and he was given a bit more time, and he wanted to do World's End in the meantime to improve on the action and round out his Ice Cream and Blood trilogy before tackling a superhero film. That footage I used was only test footage for a comic con, and hasn't been released publicly save for a few moments in an ABC live thing when Age of Ultron was going to come out.
In my mind, it is a real shame, as not only is Edgar Wright one of the funniest filmmakers working today, but just one of the hardest working. The passion and care he infuses with his work is astounding, and I just think in my mind of all the potential easter eggs that could've been put in -- it'd be like Spider-Verse in live action, the amount of references and easter eggs.

For a rather unknown channel, this video was of an extreme quality and depth. The MCU started as a guilty pleasure for me but after over ten years of following the stories, I'd be lying if I considered it to be a guilty pleasure now. Josh...I began this video believing something beautiful was going to happen. Your admissions though had me a little confused. Whether I misunderstood your context or didn't quite grasp your initial premise, I'm unsure of now. The scene itself though is very much like nature for the most part. An isolated place in the woods where far more is happening than really meets the eye.
You kept blowing me away with tie ins and parallels, new perspectives and marvelously derived conclusions from places I hadn't even considered. Gwen's take on the scene was totally righteous and I had a number of moments listening to her open further and further to her own voice. You've done something similar, with the exception that you've brought the scene and us into the creative collaborative and shown us very well a part of your own process as you took us on tour of the past/present/future of Marvel in all of its various incarnations.
